ARCHIVED How Do You Make Then Understand What It Is!
mommida replied to roddi's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I'm raising the next generation of Celiacs. A 5 year-old boy and 2 year-girl. I ask that when you don't feel like explaining Celiac one more time, to one more ignorant person, that you will. Don't be afraid to speak up for yourself or the younger Celiacs who are too little to explain for themselves. I bring my own food to in-laws and social gatherings... -
ARCHIVED Back Again And Sick
mommida replied to mela14's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
From my experience, the genetic test has 30% chance for error. (As any test has, so I 've been told.) Depending on the test you were told 90-some% accuracy. What about the small percent of inaccuracy? The last point I would like to share, not even human gene has been isolated. Entero Lab tests for more genes than Prometheus, so it seems not even the... -
ARCHIVED Celebrities With Celiac?
mommida replied to lauderdalehawk44's topic in Publications & Publicity
I think it would be a very difficult task to be a celebrity spokesperson for Celiac. We keep hearing people saying things we know are not true about Celiac. i.e. "My (insert familarity here) had that Celiacs when they were little but they grew out of it." The last year I have been on the diet the statistic of occurance keeps changing, 1 in 350, ... -
ARCHIVED Some Rather Graphic Bm Discussion Follows
mommida replied to Wandering Hermit's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Peaches, My daughter and i tend to have the "D". My son, HOLY (*^ has the constipation. It is like he is giving birth! No toilet on earth can get these suckers down. Defies the laws of physics. The cal/mag advice sounds right. I've learned to let my son eat as many oranges as he can to get him going again. Vitamin c and fiber. I will never let it... -
ARCHIVED Natural Flavorings Etc.
mommida replied to jenvan's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I looked into artificial sweeteners and they are NOT good in my opinion. The calories in Splenda can not be digested by the stomach. There are so many disturbing articles and connections to artificial sweeteners. I was also told by the Gastro. during Celiac testing to avoid them. There are other natural sweeteners to try. Laura -
If the skin was not held taught enough, you can not only get a rash but have bleeding and bruising of the area. Ask to see the ingredients of the wax. If you use skin products that have retin a and other like ingredients you should not get waxxed, ask the estitician for a complete list of products to avoid for waxxing. You should also consider your cycle...

I have been on varied doses of thyroid medication, (Levothroid, Levoxyl) since 1997. It takes time to get your body regulated on the dosage. I don't know if this makes a difference, but I ask the pharmacy NOT to open the factory sealed bottle. The endo. writes the prescription for 100 pills and it seems like a waste of time for the pills to labeled in...

ARCHIVED Other Immune Disorders
mommida replied to Rikki Tikki's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
What Thyroid tests were done? Like Kaiti told you the rapid pulse could be a symptom of Graves. It could be a symptom of Hashimoto's thyroiditis too. The blood test should have been for T3, T4, and TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone). A thyroid ultrasound and thyoid uptake/function test should be done. Thyroid Disease is on a list of top ten underdiagnosed... -
Get the pda. If you can live without the latest and greatest bells and whistles, a refurbished or used model does the trick. You must have the gluten free medication list, on hand. My kids are toddlers right now and we have been to the urgent care clinic for ear infections at midnight. DR.'s and pharmacists don't know which medications are gluten free...

ARCHIVED Yet Another Newly Diagnosed Celiac
mommida replied to Wandering Hermit's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Welcome new person, You have got a lot of great advice here. Eating is out, is like playing Russian Roulette. I do my best to make sure the gun isn't loaded, but it is a game of chance. How much is too much? One micron, (one crumb) could bring on the symptoms, but it will bring on the damage. I've definately noticed the calcium/magnesium connection... -
Dying From Celiac?
mommida replied to SharonF's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
There is a auto-immune liver disease that is associated with Celiac. My daughter is to be screened for it during her yearly check at the ped. gastro. I can't think of the clinical name for it. It was also said that Joe C. was not as carefull with his diet and lifestyle as doctors reccomended. I've heard cause of death listed as Celiac Crisis before... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Disease In The News
mommida replied to celiac3270's topic in Publications & Publicity
celiac3270, Thank you so much for your dedication for providing this forum with more education. I am looking for more information on the gluten test sticks. I read an article on these small portable instant tests to check food for gluten. Laura -
ARCHIVED News About Cures For Celiac Disease Other Than Gf
mommida replied to a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I moved in October and can't find the book I am trying to quote on breastfeeding. A mother's breastmilk is ready at about 7 months of pregnancy. There is a seemingly constant change in the breastmilk itself to care for the infant. Foremilk (the begining of a feeding) has less fat in it than hindmilk (the end of feeding time). More fat at the end... -
I have dirinking smart water, with caclium and magnesium. It has definately helped with migraines and muscle cramps. I had meningitis fall of 2000, so I went through the 3 year recovery of headaches, and had a past history of migraines before that. Laura

ARCHIVED Link With Ibs?
mommida replied to julie5914's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I just wanted to add to the great advice all ready given... I would get a refferal to a gastroenterologist. ( spelling?) Look up a Celiac support group in your area, and get the name of a doc who has actually diagnosed Celiac. (At least the doc won't rule out Celiac baecause you haven't visited a third world country.) I didn't have much luck with... -
ARCHIVED Test Results Are Negative!
mommida replied to mela14's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Every test can have a false positive/false negative. If you were to question the lab that did the testing they will tell you there is no such thing as a 90 some % accurate test. (That was the explanation given to us from Prometheus Labs.) My biological daughter's test showed DQ2 and DQ8 for Celiac. I am symptamatic after ingesting gluten and my test... -
ARCHIVED Question About Nephew
mommida replied to mollyb's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I don't know the amount of expertise the mother has with the vegan diet. Well trained vegans have a variety of protein options. Once the gluten free diet has started and the villi have healed, your nephew should start gaining weight very soon. The month- weight ratio was about the same for my daughter before diagnoses (meat eating diet). Keep an open... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Disease In The News
mommida replied to celiac3270's topic in Publications & Publicity
Thanks celiac3270! I haven't been to that store in a while and that is big news to me about the new pasta products. I visited that doctor in Troy and was more than a little disappointed. He explained to me how too many people think they have Celiac when they don't. Very different from the interviews I had read. Well I left the office getting another... -
ARCHIVED Depressed
mommida replied to paulwwww's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
New studies say, exercise was better than drugs for depression. AS little as 10 minutes a day. Go back to the doctor before you stop taking any antidepressant. Have you made sure that prescription was being taken for best results? i.e. empty stomache, with food, best time of day? What is the length of time the drug is in your system? Just a few things... -
ARCHIVED Gluten In Breastmilk?
mommida replied to mamaathome's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My experience.... I was never diagnosed with celiac disease (still not officially diagnosed). I was ingesting gluten and breastfeeding. (Yep, I was sick as a dog.) My daughter was gaining weight, but having gas, and her bowel movements were not what I expected. They had a green tinge, smelled worse than a breastfed baby's b.m. should, and I was giving... -
ARCHIVED Gluten In Breastmilk?
mommida replied to mamaathome's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I have checked at the LaLeche site and could not find enough information, to answer the gluten in breastmilk question. What I believe without a doubt, if the mother has antibodies to gluten in her system, that would be in the breastmilk. Laura -
ARCHIVED Dinner At Carrabas
mommida replied to VegasCeliacBuckeye's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I have enjoyed Carrabas gluten free menu, but do not have the garlic potatos! They assured the ingredients for the potatos were gluten free, but I had the gluten reaction. There is too much cross contamination risk. Go for the steamed vegetables instead. Laura -
ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed And Clueless
mommida replied to adorrell's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Yes it is worth it! You're worth it! There are so many people here, on this forum to help you. No question is stupid. You have been very sick and everything is probably overwhelming right now. Give yourself time to heal. You can get the hang of this diet. I would suggest a Gluten-free Gourmet cookbook by Bette Hagman just for the description... -
ARCHIVED Needed...a Good Recipe For Vanilla Wafers
mommida replied to cdford's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Some one mentioned they might have tried the first recipe and they didn't hold their shape. Comparing the ingredients, the first recipe could probably use some xanthan gum or guar gum. Laura -
