  1. We all to take it "one day at a time". At least Joe Frasier (assuming he would get frustrated too) got to punch people. I tell you, having to watch your kids go through this Celiac and other health issues too and how unfairly they are treated, I just want to punch people. So my advice, treat yourself well! Don't rely on anyone else to bring you joy...
  2. My daughter was diagnosed at 17 months of old with "probable" Celiac. ~ Long story, she was too sick to have the endoscopy for "gold standard" diagnoses. Everything was great until she was about 6. (4 1/2 years gluten free) Then the pain and Celiac symptoms started like she was getting glutened. She then started vomitting about 5 times a day and she was...
  3. I have to add that sometimes another food allergen is discovered, and a person has to not only go gluten free, but casein or egg free too. Then the diet gets harder when the person has to avoid more than one allergen. You should be prepared for that scenario, and that is when a person really needs your help. I could have used some help back when all top...
  4. Well I have to say you are an amazing mom! Having to deal with the food allergen free diet turns into a full time job. Don't give up on having your kids do the "normal" kid's stuff they want to do. My son has a boy scout troup that has dealt with food allergies before. One of the parents works as a chef, and was diagnosed with food allergies too. My...
  5. The gluten challenge can be dangerous. (My daughter was hospitalized for dehydration at 17months from a 2 week gluten challenge. She was too ill to have the endoscopy after the positive blood work. She was genetic tested and positive for 2 Celiac genes.) I would wait until your child is better to communicate, potty training is done, and has time to reach...
  6. If you tell the school feeding them gluten makes them sick. They really should not feed them gluten. (Who wants to clean up a pile of puke or "D"?) Without a doctors note they probably won't go through the special allergy free kitchen precautions. Even though there are symptoms that strongly suggest Celiac, you should have testing done for your children...
  7. Celiac is not a new disease. It is believed to be described in the Bible as the wasting disease. During the food shortages of World War Two, children starving in Belgium who actually had Celiac Disease health improved. It was the groundbreaking proof of the gluten free diet as the cure for Celiacs.
  8. Really interesting, When I was watching the Oscars I noticed Sandra Bullock seemed to have what you described.
  9. You need to start working with a pediatric gastroenterologist. The list of illnesses with these symptoms is just too long. If he really is not holding anything down, there is an amino acid formula. If his G.I. track is not functioning he could be put on a feeding tube. Call the doctor's office and be more demanding. (If the patient hasn't been ingesting...
  10. I have eaten at P.F. Chang's since we were lucky enough to get one in this area. It has always been safe. Only mistake was a mix-up of white wine. To err is human. Even a great place like Chang's can make mistakes. Call if they are getting sloppy and starting to make mistakes. I think it is the most comfortable palce for our Celiac family to eat,...
  11. I really noticed more when I was accidentally getting slipped some gluten. It's like my brain feels a ZING! Then I feel like eating the rest of the food that has the gluten is like sAtisfyinG the munchies, THE BEST THING I EVER TASTED! WOW! I told my husband if I ever start acting like that again when I 'm eating to take it away, because it has gluten...
  12. My kids just asked yesterday when we can have another car picnic!
  13. vitamin and mineral deficiency is commonly overlooked by the medical community. If it weren't for your post I wouldn't have searched for any links to B12 defiency with premature greying. The link for pernicious anemia seems to be from damaged gut lining for Celiacs. I don't know if many doctors feel comfortable ordering the proper testing to diagnose it...
  14. There is a link between Celiac and Pernicious anemia (a lack of the intinsic factor in the gut lining to properly absorb vitamin B12).
  15. you did mean that she had an endoscopy with biopsy? My daughter was diagnosed with Eosinophilic Esophagitus. Now the Eosinophilic gastro. disorders diagnoses are really going up lately. No one can say for sure why. Better diagnostic capabilities? increased knowledge? or is the population just developing the complications more? The red flag for telling...
  16. Meijer Kroger Hiller's markets Nino Salvagio's Whole foods market Celiac Specialties is now in the Rochester area (a lot of small health food stores carry some of the products) Dare I type it, a m a z o n . I like the convenience of delivery and cheaper pricing buying buy the case. I'm feeding a family of 4 though and need to get more than gluten...
  17. I guess I am too hyperactive to sit down and study to get a degree. So you just turn into a jack of all trades. semi retired hairdresser stay at home mom cyber school learning coach for my kids ice skating instructor (very part-time now days) active with 4H (vet sciences, rabbit/cavvies, and community service group) I also have a notebook of patent...
  18. It is best to concentrate on what she can eat. Make the situation into cooking classes with your daughter. When it goes well, and you have created a "masterpiece" meal or treat, celebrate and think how lucky you are that being gluten free created such a nice experience for you to share. It takes some time and practice learning to cook and bake without...
  19. Everyone has given great advice. Get the Celiac panel done. You may consider the gene testing too. You and your doctor (pediatric gastroenterologist) will have to consider the endoscopy with biopsy. The endoscopy can help rule out or in other medical conditions. (There are a lot of medical conditions that do have a lot of the same symptoms of Celiac...
  20. If you get any one test out of the Celiac panel as a positive, you should have the endoscopy with biopsy for the "gold standard" of diagnoses. I would take the positive on the bloodwork as enough proof for me and start the diet. What did your doctor say?
  21. People are shocked that my kids 8 and 11 years old ask to read the food labels for themselves because they can not trust most adults to know what gluten is.
  22. I think vitamin B12 supplements are a very good idea. Keep a food journal! It is a usefull tool to track down other food intolerances or cross contamination. ( I believe I was being cross contaminated at first by a bottle of vanilla. The bottles ingredients were gluten free. Would have never been able to narrow it down if I hadn't kept a food journal...
  23. I think I need to ignore people too!
  24. Did the doctor ever suggest the amino acid formula? (Crazy thing, it has artificial sweetners in it! Splash comes in little drink boxes and I forgot how many different flavors. My daughter HATED it and we were getting prepared for her to be tube fed. The all top * allergen, gluten free (of coarse) and pea free elimination diet starting working and she...
  25. Your daughter will most likely have to have an endoscopy with biopsy. I would ask the doctor for a list of what he/she feels the endoscopy is being done to diagnose. I would also make sure the GI is aware of eosinophilic gastro. disorders and this testing is being done. Gluten should not be removed from her diet while testing is being done. (It can be...
