ARCHIVED Home Schooling?
mommida replied to hannahsue01's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Don't get me started on the "No Child Left Behind" and what I think about it. I think it is a very good thing that you are pulling her from the program and voicing your concerns. MOPS.org may be a good place to start. Find a group in your area. homeschooler's defense fund is highly reccomended by everyone in the homeschooling community. If you find a... -
ARCHIVED Blood Test - Advice Needed
mommida replied to peasoup's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Katherine, It is not worth it! My daughter ended up being hospitalized with dehydration from trying the gluten challenge for testing. Granted she was a lot younger, but at your age - going to uni and just starting out in life; it is very risky to do the challenge. You would have to eat gluten for more than one week. (After eating gluten for two weeks... -
ARCHIVED Mother Of Newly Diagnosed Celiac
mommida replied to judycolby's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Uh-oh. You can't start the gluten free diet before all the testing is done! Unless the new doctor will diagnose from the old test results with no endoscopy with biopsy to confirm damaged villi. You could try genetic testing, but it is rare if insurance covers the test and it is not 100% accurate. (Having the gene(s) does not prove you have Celiac.) There... -
Danna Korn has mentioned "the honeymoon phase" in her book Kid's with celiac disease. There are other documented sources out there. Wait until your grade is in, set in stone, and then drop off an information packet to this "teacher". L.

Hi Shalia, I noticed you were still on. I just wanted to say hi and let you know I feel your pain on the MIL. Tell her straight the facts are... this test came back + and it is the only treatment that can help this. Make sure your husband tells her too. Happy Girl, I agree with everything you've said! L. -

Both are true. In the old days, they thought children outgrew Celiac because the symptoms lesson. Since going gluten free my symptoms of accidental glutening have been worse in my opinion. (To explain all of that would be TMI.) L.

ARCHIVED Enterolab Results Came In
mommida replied to AliceW's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You have enough information (test results)and symptoms to go on the gluten free diet. You could prolong the testing experience, try genetic testing. I don't believe every gene has been isolated. Even the most distinquished labs (Prometheus and others are respected by the medical professionals) admit they know their test misses at last 2% of the known Celiac... -
ARCHIVED Craving Real Chicken Nuggets
mommida replied to Sweetfudge's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Crush up potato chips, add potato flakes or parmesan cheese or gluten-free bread crumbs or all of these things , any type of gluten free spices, dip the chicken in egg or anything that is safe for you to make the mixture stick. Bake until chicken is cooked through at 350 degrees. Not the healthiest gluten free dining, but they taste great. L. -

ARCHIVED Thyroid Nodules And Possible Cancer.
mommida replied to frenchiemama's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I am in no way a doctor, so this is just my opinion. The doctor will look at the tests all ready done and say there is no way to tell unless the procedure is performed and the tissue can be biopsied. L. -

ARCHIVED Has Anyone Tried....?
mommida replied to clbevilacqua's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I used it in gluten free sugar cookies and they turned out perfect! I tried the same recipe without it and it didn't turn out as well. L. -
Thank you everyone for your kind words and sharing your memories. It definately helps knowing that other people care so much for the furry members of their families. The vets office gave me a copy of "The Rainbow Bridge" with the paperwork and sent a card. I was going to let the kids draw a picture and scribble a note, tie it to a helium balloon and...

ARCHIVED I Was Bitten By A Stray Kitten...
mommida replied to Lauren M's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
What exactly are you watching and waiting for before getting the rabies vaccination series? Do you have someone to stay close to you who knows what to look for too? My hair client/friend had the unfortunate experience of being bitten by an infected kitten. Take any reasonable option to locate the kitten for the observation period. There is more concern... -
ARCHIVED Corn Tortilla Roll-ups
mommida replied to Fiddle-Faddle's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
A friend of mine has been teaching me how to make authentic mexican food. For rolling up the corn tortillas for making enchiladas, you make a sauce out of the chilli powder, cumin, water, and whatever other spices you are cooking with. The sauce has to be at the correct temperature - near boiling temperature seems to be the best. Dip the tortilla in the... -

ARCHIVED So Confused....
mommida replied to shan1523's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
The kids don't seem to react to the accidental gluten exposures as I do. My daughter didn't seem to react for at least three or four last times, until she was just vomiting two days ago. (could have been a stomache bug, but she didn't have a fever only vomited once and has wanted to just sleep since and the brown circles under her eyes - Dr.'s call them... -

ARCHIVED Annatto
mommida replied to rogue's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Many Celiacs react to annatto along with other ingredients. I reacted to annatto for at least a year on the gluten free diet. I can now tolerate it. We have questions about once a month about distilled vinegar too (gluten free, but a lot of Celiacs have problems with it) Keep a food journal to figure out what other ingredients you are sensitive to. ... -
ARCHIVED Does This Contain Gluten?
mommida replied to breann6's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
In the US it has to be labeled if it has a wheat base. I have only seen two labels that had the base listed as wheat. (Health Valley soup) L.
