ARCHIVED Petty, Silly Annoyances That You Would Never Tell Anyone Else.
mommida replied to frenchiemama's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My pet peeve, every time I use the old "I'm allergic to wheat" that's when I find another Celiac is in the room. L. -
ARCHIVED Ridges In Fingernails
mommida replied to lindalee's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I have the grooves too. It is caused by vitamin and mineral defiency. If I remember right it is the B vitamins. You can also get white spots and the nails can flatten on the nailbed and curve under at the free edge (iron defiency). Watch your diet and get exercise. If you have circulatory problems that will affect your nails too. L. -

ARCHIVED Potty Training A Newly Diagnosed Celiac
mommida replied to Luvs to Scrap's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
You can't push (for lack of a better word) any child to potty train. You are there for guidance, support, and praise. The rest is up to your child. Your child will be able to control a BM once his body heals and he is not having gluten reactions. Welcome to parenthood, sometimes you are just there for the ride. L. -
ARCHIVED Newbie Seeks An Answer
mommida replied to a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You're NOT crazy and you're not alone. You are lucky that you have made the connection before you went through any debilatating gi symptoms. You chances for getting any accurate testing ends when you start the gluten free diet. You may now notice your body will react more if you accidentally ingest gluten, and you will probably never want to do a gluten... -

ARCHIVED Does My 10 Yr Old Daughter Have This?
mommida replied to tnmomof3's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
She could have Celiac or gluten intolerance. The symptoms vary so much from person to person. Get the blood tests see how they turn out. If you want to try an elimination diet after testing is done, a gluten free diet is not harmful. L. -
ARCHIVED What Am I Looking For?
mommida replied to Corkdarrr's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I think every one remembers feeling pretty lost at first. I am so grateful for the help I got, I just want to pass it on. You may find out your family are jerks and your friends aren't really very nice, but a group of strangers understand exactly what you are going through. It will get easier and people here will help you along the way. L. -
You should have a full blood panel (ultra sensitive TSH, T3, T4, thyroglubulin, among other levels- to rule out other conditions) a thyroid function/uptake - swallow a radioactive pill and have geiger counter readings, and an ultrasound of the thyroid (sometimes the shape of the enlargement can also determine Hashimoto's). That's what I can remember about...

Get a copy of the forbidden list. Get a copy of the safe list, when you locate a product that should be safe double check the label for forbidden ingredients. Kraft, McCormick's, and other companies will not hide gluten on their labels under things like modified food starch or malt. You may have to call companies to verify what modified food starch means... -

Hair growth has three phases, rest, growth, and falling out. Most of the time the individual hair follicles following this pattern are scattered over (the head) and the pattern is not that noticable. If the body has all the hair growth restarted at the same time it is very noticeable. Give it some time and maybe try a shorter style for right now. L.

Don't cheat! He is truely hurting himself. If there are foods you miss, look a little harder or try making them yourself. There are so many recipe websites on-line you can convert any recipe you want to gluten free. The gluten free foods that are available have increased by 300% in the past few years. You can even by little cake mixes and such that you... -
ARCHIVED Symptoms Changing With Diet Change?
mommida replied to jnclelland's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
There is a list of controversial items. The things that most people question whether or not it is gluten free. Distilled vinegar and annatto are on that list (they are gluten free), but it took about two years on the gluten free diet for my gut to heal well enough to tolerate those particular items. Keep a food diary, and keep in mind that it may not be... -

Bel Cibo carries some of the Celiac Specialty baked goods. Save yourself the drive, and call Bel Cibos and see if you can put an order in for some baked goods you want. I think the drive out to Chesterfield might be too far (especially during rush hour). L. -
ARCHIVED New With Questions
mommida replied to meeshyo's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Many people have had the same type of symptoms (chronic congestion) for Celiac. My daughter's blood panel showed the same elevation, of course it was the "least" reliable one for diagnosing Celiac. She bacame too ill for the endo w/ biopsy. She was genetically tested. Positive for two Celiac genes. The ped gastro. has diagnosed "probable" Celiac because... -

On 16 Mile road in Troy there is Maggiono's Italian. They will prepare anything for you gluten free, they even have gluten free pasta. You will be close to PF Chang's at the Somerset... -
ARCHIVED How To Recognize If Child Has Been Glutened?
mommida replied to Tori's Dad's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Well your child's reactions are just that - they are unique to the individual. What you noticed is most likely her reaction to that very amount of gluten. She said her tummy hurt and that is about all you can really go on when you are the parent watching. Try and be prepared for the worst case scenario, I try and carry a change of clothes and sickness... -

ARCHIVED Remission And Return Of Celiac Disease?
mommida replied to blondeambition's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
It was thought that children "outgrew" Celiac; but we know now that once a Celiac, ALWAYS a Celiac. Some people do say that gastrointestinal reactions have varied, to the point they don't notice any symptoms. A biopsy of the intestine proves that damage is being done with or without symptoms. If the medical professionals would better educate themselves...
