My huband (celiac) is now 130 lbs. from a grand high of 180 (see photo at left) and he can no longer gain weight in arms and legs; it only deposits in waistline. He does not eat gluten-free junk food. We can't figure it out either as to why the waistline gets the extra pounds first. Maybe it's because he's over 55 years old? Does age make a difference...

I agree and selfishly I wish it was only for the topic of gluten free. But that's just me... If it's not sold out, Whole Foods stores sells it. You have to time it when the issue first comes out. You may want to inquire at a Barnes & Noble too

Yup, just like prior poster stated....Advice: sugar-free candy has sobitol or some other unnatural sweetener. These sweetners cause diarrhea is some people. This could have contributed to your intestinal upset.

ARCHIVED Thanksgiving Is Coming!
debmidge replied to Offthegrid's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I also want to add to this that when gluteny stuffing is in bird, the drippings get glutened from the bread and the procedure for basting makes sure that all the gluten in the drippings gets deposited on the bird. If bird has gluten bread as stuffing then the meat will have actual contamination. It's an "all or nothing" proposition. -
I have to interject here and say as someone who just went through gallbladder disease for several months I was not in severe pain. That was part of the problem: I wanted to go to the E.R. and the doctor kept telling me to wait until my scheduled surgery date as I was not in severe pain - just uncomfortable with gas, indigestion and nauseas. However, Gallstones...

ARCHIVED Olay Quencher Body Lotion
debmidge posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I spoke with Olay this week 10/30 and they advised that this product is generally gluten free, however the fragrance could have traces of gluten. they advise that fragrance could always have traces of gluten; they recommend "fragrance free" products ----- not unscented as unscented may have a fragrance which acts as a "masking" agent and could have... -
Donna As someone who just went thru gallbladder disease and surgery I can tell you that it sounds like you are passing undigested bile. Undigested bile can trigger diarrhea. Yes, it can be related to gallbladder disease/stones/polyps. All are serious and the first test you should get is a right upper abdominal sonogram to check it out. I was passing...

Iron skillets - an iron skillet that is seasoned is different than one that is scrubbed after each use... the seasoned skillet or any other cooking surface that has been seasoned will harbor gluten and no amount of scrubbing will clean it up properly. Can't take that chance. Eating at homes of others - Just like you 1965, my husband was diagnosed...

good topic..my husband can't digest fruits or vegetables and used to rely on wheat bran for fiber...he can't digest beans or flax either.... He uses Fiber Choice (their website says they are gluten-free) and when I bake him his gluten-free bread I add rice bran into the flour. I have corn bran which I add to his corn bread in the same way. However, this...

ARCHIVED My Doctor's Daughter Has celiac disease
debmidge replied to sparkles's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
How old is her daughter? When my husband first was diagnosed 4 years ago we stupidly thought that it was just bread and pasta too; then we thought that well, he could cheat now and then; then a few days into the diet we learned much more about the diet thru the internet and the Celiac Sprue Association (CSA). As an aside, the CSA has a special packet... -
Don't let the title get you discouraged...the articles, receipes and even advertisements are worth the subscription. This magazine also addresses living without other food allergens (peanut, etc.) so it's not entirely for the gluten free crowd.

ARCHIVED Chocolate Candy Precaution
debmidge posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The holidays are coming up and I wanted to share this experience with you all I purchased Belgium-style candy made in Vermont and after the purchase realized that it had wheat in it. I had this happen last year (someone gave me candy from Germany that had barley in it). I've noticed that some chocolates from U.S., Switzerland, Belgium and Germany... -

ARCHIVED gluten-free Body Lotion
debmidge replied to debmidge's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
No, so far Avon is so-so, but they no longer have a gluten-free list. You have to call them about each product every time you have a question and I called them about the Care Deeply with Oatmeal and was told that this product was gluten-free...... So I have some misgivings about their ability to accurately report on their products. I am not... -

debmidge replied to cgilsing's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
lol...my best friend tells me this all the time! I have heard this since I met her iin 1971 when we were kids! But I still love her. And she might be right. I agree; they are going to find that soy is a bad idea too. I dislike the Kaopectate and Pepto Bismal commercials; they should point out that any diarrhea (or other change in bowel movements... -

This is being said with as much forethought and compassion and in no way to say anything more than what it says.... I guess I am talking about a low percentage of celiacs (who have additional celiac-related health issues) . I'm not talking about celiac people who are miserable just because they can't go to fast food places any longer. I am talking about...

This forum is a "safe haven" to allow those who need to vent to do so without being unduly criticized. We are dealing with so many personalities who have differing stress thresholds - and who knows whatever else might be going on in their lives - my opinion is to "pass" from giving them the "you gotta be stronger, etc." response or comparing their...
