    ARCHIVED New Here!

Welcome to our "place." Great to have a newbie. You'll find a lot of good information and good conversation and food discussion and all those good things to help you. One of the board members has a "newbie" packet. I think it's NINI. Hope to see you on board again. D.
  2. Great article; I purchased it and promptly read it quickly, then left the magazine at my sister's house.
  3. I get the impression that you are making bagels for children who are too young to prepare their own food. This being said, I go with the advice that after touching gluten at least rinse your hands before you touch any other surface. I usually put the faucet on first, then make my sandwich for lunch, then rinse everything under the running water so...

ARCHIVED Celiac Sprue & Doctor Too!

Dear Doctors: Thank you for sharing your diagnosis and your progress with us. Welcome to our board. As you know by now, it's very important to share info with one another about products, restaurants, etc. You have the unique opportunity of sharing celiac info with your peers which we as non doctors do not have. I urge you to make headway into...
  6. I think it could mean that corn starch is a filler and generally fillers do not have any nutriitional value, so therefore, it can be considered "no good" for you. But if you need corn starch for a thickener or to help your receipe I can't imagine that little bit being a problem for your health. I mean no one drinks down quarts of corn starch thickened...
  7. on behalf of Husband 1) Ill at age 27 - constant diarrhea gas bloating; massive weight loss 2) At age 27 started seeing various gastro drs. - all diagnosed IBS/colitis/ileitius 3) At age 27 Veteran's Administration Dr. accused him of using drugs and that's why he was sickly and thin 4) At age 28 saw private doctor - see item #2 above. Told him...
  8. Thanks for reminder...I've been waiting for this.
  9. Was your blood work negative because you have been gluten-free for a long time? I have little knowledge about this topic and appeal to those who can give you better advice on this than I can. From what I know, blood work can be negative if you've been gluten-free for a while; the damage of small intestine is just the residual effect of the disease...
  10. Marco Marco: First I want to commend you for being self assured enough to come on this board and chat with us on a topic that is so personal and complex. At 16 sometimes a person still doesn't have "self awareness" to the point of being able to grasp complexities that can deter their lives. My husband has celiac and not me; but I live it with...
  11. I would suggest Lemon Meringue but I don't have gluten-free receipe and I am not sure if My-T-Fine or other boxed powder filling is gluten-free. Anyone know?
  12. I rather enjoy being labled a "hippie-freak" (yes for other reasons I've been labeled a hippie - I think it's because my motto is "love people, use things" ). Hippie-freak is a compliment! Means I am not part of the herd mentality. It's hard to deal with the ignorant; I think the aforementioned suggestions should be used in responding to them...
  13. Hi I am looking to find out what brands of instant mashed potatoes are gluten-free. Sometimes I need these in a pinch. (If the answer is Kraft, then please provide me with the product's name.)
  14. Benefiber now uses wheat starch in their formula. They claim it's gluten free as it's so many small parts per million. We reject this and no longer will buy Benefiber as we feel that the old formula served its purpose and no changes were needed. We have been calling Novartis Home Health (manufacturer) and writing to them to state our decision and...
  15. Let's make a distinction between the UK cereals and the USA made cereals. This could be where the descrepancy lies. UK and USA formulas are not the same. in USA most commercial cereals have malt (barley)
  16. silly question, but what is smell? I have constant smell of smoke (the only word I can use to describe it). Keep in mind it's my husband who has celiac and not me; and I don't have sinus problems; had smoke smell on and off for a few years now and do not have seizure problems..... I too wondered where this was coming from.
  17. This does sound like the best way to handle it. Do what's best for you in the long run.
  18. That appears to be a nice way to handle it. This way you can disagree but not let the person feel you are insulting them in some way for trying to match your diet up with Atkins.
  19. Well, yes it could be sensitivity to corn, but do you KNOW you don't have an ulcer? Hubby finally had endoscopy and an ulcer was found. Surprise! that answered a lot of questions about why when he first went gluten-free he still had some symptoms.
  20. I neither agree nor disagree about buying Clan Thompson or Gluten Guard, but I can tell you that I no longer buy the CSA's guidebook as most of the supermarkets mentioned in their book are not on the East Coast. Furthermore, some of the OK products aren't sold on East Coast and a lot of times there had been items I know are gluten-free and they are not...
  21. This is the same experience my husband had for about 7-8 months into the gluten-free diet.
  22. We use Kinnickink corn meal and corn flour Ener-g's is good, but it's a mix and already has baking powder in it.
  23. There are a good number of New Yorkers on the board. They will probably give you some resource info for NYC area. There are a number of Whole Food food stores in New York area.
