  2. I've had stomach issues all my life, diagnosed with IBS. Eight years ago I had a wicked virus, couldn't keep anything in for a week and lost five pounds (weight I didn't have to lose). I ended up in the emerg getting 2 bags of fluids & a shot to stop my stomach spasming...ugh, I just wanted to die I felt so awful. It took me a year to learn to eat again...
  3. I agree with most of the posts here - Bartfull, you nailed it. It does require adaptation. I have zero tolerance to gluten and rarely eat out, but I have also had to greatly limit dairy and soy. Occasionally I have hard cheese and I have a little half & half in my coffee..that's pretty much it. I tried gluten-free cereal with soy milk and I just...
  4. I had a great meal in Nashville at the Old Spaghetti Factory - pasta with red sauce (can't remember which one), off the gluten free menu. But then I spent the night with nausea, stomach cramps, and didn't sleep much...next day wasn't much better or the days after that for that matter (thank goodness for advil & pepto). Definitely quiz the...
  5. I had asked about arthritis issues a few months ago. I deal with cold Canadian winters...starting around New Year's I began to have symptoms of hand/wrist/elbow pain...deep ache...one shoulder...it recurred every 2-3 weeks, got real bad in March when we went down to Vancouver island (very wet, rainy weather)...and then abated, went away. Fast forward to...
  6. I am the only gluten-free one in a family of 5. I have 2 counters literally labelled 'gluten free' - signs on the wall. My toaster is there. I have the top shelf of the freezer, the fridge, & the pantry, and another cupboard. I have my own strainer, large utensil drawer, and fry pan...all my other pots are non stick. I have a permanent marker that...
  7. What a jerk ! I agree - body aches are big and if you look online the list of celiac symptom is huge ! This doc is obviously a hack - don't go back to him, if you need another specialist like him - ever - find a different one. Sure, many celiacs are on the lean side but not all. I only know a few where I live but one is obese and one is average weight...
  8. Seems to me that the intestinal tract is wired directly to your brain, ha ha. When one gets stressed out, the gut reacts. When I get stressed I actually eat less because things bother me - things that normally wouldn't. I agree that processed stuff is gonna affect you even more so. In times of stress, try to eat 'clean' - food that still looks like it...
  9. I too was a non-believer ! I live in a household of 5 and I didn't believe pots & pans that were cleaned were gonna get me. It didn't take long to change my mind (a few years ago). Further proof is that when I visit relatives for a week or whatever, no matter how careful I am, after a few days I am sick - cutting boards, pans, whatever. Ok, yeah...
  10. Wow, I could have written the last two posts, more or less ! I think when you are glutened, you are already "down" - it doesn't take much to get you down further. I tend to avoid dairy & soy as well - but I can get away with a little now & then (of course I can never 'get away' with gluten). I too have tried milk substitutes because dairy gets...
  11. I agree with the too much information thing. Friends (generally speaking) do wanna hear your issues...to a point. After awhile, they just don't want to know anymore. It can be frustrating because you have to live with your allergies & be vigilant about looking after yourself...but others just aren't that interested, unless they have a similar issue. ...
  12. Yeah, I agree with glutenings being different - just dunno the reason why. Often I will feel light headed & just plain wrong within 20 minutes or so - and extremely tired. Usually I get wicked headaches, sinus pain, and then the stomach cramps & nausea start...and the D. However, sometimes from a lighter CC reaction I will just feel really (&...
  13. Why so upset.... Well, not really upset - annoyed ? Someone used the word 'devalued' - that about sums it up. I was the original poster - got zinged by a "gluten-free" cookie that my daughter's friend made...on regular pans. So the annoying thing is that someone claiming to be gluten-free isn't...doesn't have to be, at least not too carefully. Someone...
  14. Ok...I am stupid for this...glutened myself (mildly). My daughter's best friend...for some reason...has gone gluten free. I just took my daughter over to her place & her friend runs out & gives me a gluten free peanut butter chocolate iced cookie. The icing is on the bottom. I take a bite & thank her...then just hold it. Dang if it doesn't...
  15. I use it a lot - never had any problems (the chicken broth - get it at Costco).
  16. I have suspected this product in the past as the cause of a minor glutening. I do not know for sure - President's Choice is not very user friendly. In fact, I have pretty much given up on all their brands since they do not like to disclose gluten (they want you to call every time, I'll stick to brands I know, thanks). This is very frustrating because...
  17. I have been in your shoes ! No one brings me gluten-free stuff anymore - I made it clear that that pans can be contaminated, etc. Someone made cupcakes one day - in their usual pans of course. I had to explain that at home I have all my own stuff (baking pans, etc.) because I hate getting sick. Would you eat something, no matter how good it was, knowing it...
  18. Last time I looked at the ingredients, there didn't seem to be any gluten ingredients BUT it did say either "may contain wheat" or "processed in a facility that process wheat"...can't remember which (that was about 6 months ago).
  19. I find this topic interesting for a number of reasons. Wow - that so many of us celiacs have/suspect we have RA or Lupus. Yikes. I'm almost 42 & have been gluten-free for about 7 years but since January have had 4 big joint pain episodes - hands/wrists/elbows mostly but also some knee & ankle/foot pain. 1st episode - just after Christmas, wasn...
  20. Just got back from spending 2 weeks with relatives, only got mildly glutened a couple of times. It was a good holiday but I am so glad to be back home - & in my own kitchen, with my own food/freezer/etc. I am going to make good stuff this week so I can treat myself a bit ! Over the last two weeks I have watched folks eat Chinese food, pizza, fish &...
  21. Best (& easiest) pancake recipe ever.... 2 eggs 1 c plain yogurt -->mix together 1/2c rice flour 1/2 t baking soda 1/2 t baking powder -->add to wet mixture & gently blend It's just that easy - light & fluffy & lots protein.
  22. I'm a fitness instructor & avid exerciser - early 40's and gluten-free for 8 years. After going gluten-free I lost 5 pounds and my weight stays stable (I am at a good weight, losing weight at this point would be bad ! 5'5" and 122 and muscular...or so they tell me). I don't watch my weight BUT I eat pretty clean (unprocessed)....Ha ! I'm cheap, premade...
  23. I'm mom in a family of 5...I am careful but the only gluten-free person. I bought an island on wheels for the kitchen that is separate from the rest of the counters & that's where the breadstuffs go, the gluten stuff. The other counters actually have "gluten free zone" signs on the wall - and that's where my toaster is (they have one on the island...
  24. Sorry but I'd have to say I'm even more sensitive. I have discovered gluten in products one would never suspect. For example, I got sick from Hunt's spaghetti sauce because I thought they were all gluten-free but I had one of the few that weren't & it had no obvious gluten in it (sort of a blind test!). Now, I didn't get really sick but I knew the gluten...
  25. For me it's been 8 years. Stomach related issues definitely have improved/resolved. My weight is healthy, I teach fitness so I'm healthy there too. However, in the last 3 months or so I have developed pain in my hands/wrists/elbows. It seems a monthly thing, if you know what I mean. Doctor tested me for rheumatoid but it as negative...but then not everyone...
