  1. If you are saying that because we launch an immune response against a foreign protein - then our immune system is doing what it is supposed to do. Technically you are correct. The abnormality lies in the autoimmune process that damages self. The immune system is meant to target foreign invaders (be it gluten, bacteria or whatever) - that is a normal funtion...
  2. I see where you were going with the original question - bascially - is celiac a diseased state of the body or is it just a variant among people? Since it comes down to interpretation of the word disease...I found this description of "disease"....I quite liked it as it even considered cultural differences... Sandy
  3. First - I agree that your fasting blood sugar is not high. Normal values are considered in light of other conditions. If your hypothyroidism is treated and your levels are fine then it should not impact the blood glucose. Testing blood glucose while pregnant is wise if there are any concerns. If there is doubt - they can do a glucose tolerance test. ...
  4. Wait for the results. My daughters biopsy looked quite normal during the procedure, the GI doc came out and said "her intestinal wall looks quite normal but we will wait for the biopsy to confirm that. Prior to the biopsy she was barely positive on antiendomeseal antibodies. The biopsy was unmistakably celiac - with patchy areas of subtotal villous flattening...
  5. Villi blunting can have othe causes, but the pathologist examining biopsy specimens - looks for specific things and the pathologist will send a report to the doctor outlining in detail - his findings, followed by "histologic findings consistent with celiac sprue"....if it is celiac ...or if the biopsy had findings associated with allergy - he/she would...
  6. Yes, I am speaking of celiac disease only...as it is autoimmune whereas gluten sensitivity can have systemic effects and be debilitating to some - it does not involve destruction of villi or an autoimmune attack sandy
  7. Celiac is an autoimmune condition that causes systemic signs - those symptoms vary among individuals. The systemic signs are related to the intestinal damage and absorbtion of gluten. It varies among people because - it depends on the age of onset, co-morbid conditions (other illnesses), stress levels ...you name it. Young children have growth and behavior...
  8. I am sorry to hear that you are struggling with depression, been there a few times and it is not fun. Like being in a dark hole. Big hugs and keep coming here for support - to just vent or commiserate - whatever you need. Just a heads up to all - and I have seen this in our small town. If someone suspects a person might be in danger - from themselves...
  9. My understanding is that because celiac is autoimmune - insurance companies give it a different risk category....because autoimmune conditions can occur together. They insure based on the risk factor and anyone with autoimmune disease is at risk for other conditions. My daughter is un-insurable til she reaches the age of 16 becaus of the diagnosis of Aspergers...
  10. Speaking as a mom of an autistic child - the day to day living with it and coping with the interventions and dealing with school, sensory issues...is can be exhausting and the thought of starting someting else may just be mentally overwhelming and they feel they cant handle one more thing. Perhaps get them the book and give them a list of foods readily available...
  11. There are several things you can do. First - understand this pup will be leaving his/her mom and littermates behind. To go from that to what is essentially - isolation (crated most of the day)....can be harmful to the dogs emotional development. This is how we see destructive chewers and dogs with separation anxiety develop..... if it is done incorrectly...
  12. I We never know what happens in prep for a show..perhaps Elisabeth had discussed it with Jenny and since the interview was about the impact of Gluten-free Casein-free diet on autism - To bring up celiac may have clouded the issue and have viewers thinking autism is really celiac - a leap I know - but I have had that happen with me when trying to explain...
  13. I saw it as well, and it was terrific. The Gluten-free Casein-free diet for autism has been around for a number of years but mainstream doctors tend to dismiss it as a parent's attempts to deal with autism, and the improvment they see is more likely due to interventions and/or that the child may not be autistic. I say ........they need to start listening...
  14. An elevated ANA is not indicative of Lupus, it depends on the pattern they see (rim, speckled etc). It is seen with lupus as well as other markers for the disease. ANA alone is not diagnostic of anything but is combined with other results and special immune tests. (like an ENA profile - extractable nuclear antigens) Elevated ANA is common in older (+30)...
  15. I will keep your niece in my prayers. Never any fun to have a sick child ...esp when they get seizures from fever. Kathryn had them when she was little - with a temperature spike. Actually Kathyrn had a seizure when she was 13 and needed an appendectomy - she went from 102 to 104.5 in a matter of 30 minutes...luckily we were in emerg and they got an IV into...
  16. I had it done, no complications - and I have type 1 diabetes. It does not prevent ovulation and therefore wont prevent cysts from forming in the future. It just scars the tubes shut so eggs cannot bet fertilized. I had it done laparoscopically about 10 yrs ago. Sandy
  17. I guess I should clarify as well - that the body is reacting to the gluten and the villi are damaged in the "war against gliadin" launched by the immune system. In effect - the immune sytem damages "self" and the foreign invader known as gluten. The antibodies produced against cold or flu viruses are produced by the humoral immune system and the antibodies...
  18. Its kind of complex but the antibodies are against the endomeseal cells that line the villi, the villi line the intestine.... that's why the villi get wiped out. Eliminate gluten= body stops attacking the villi. So it does not differ in that sense - the body IS attacking its own cells - the villi. The gluten particles coat the villi and the reaction takes...
  19. This is a good site on the the various vasculitis disorders. Open Original Shared Link There are many types of autoimmune disease - including the different forms of vasculitis. If a person has one autoimmune disease, they are more likely to develop another - there are known links to Hashimotos thyroid disease and Type 1 diabetes, celiac and thyroid...
  20. There are many articles out there, some anectodotal evidence - others with science. All I know is that after going gluten free (diagnosed celiac), my daughter with aspergers improved academically and socially. For her - a huge part is that she felt so much better physically that she would learn better - about social skills as well as academics. Most diets...
  21. I dont think it is a concern for celiacs - even so - the child can be encouraged to wash their hands after using the fountain. peanut allergies can be so severe that children can go in to anaphylaxis if they are next to a child eating a peanut butter sandwich. I do give my children water bottles to take to school, not because of celiac - but because so...
  22. Maybe my pediatric endo should talk to yours -cause neither of my children had diarrhea either and both had significant villi damage. Kathryn's symptoms were stomach ache and constipation if anything / migraines / neckache / backache. Matt had leg pains and stomach aches plus erractic unstable glucose readings despite weighing carbs religiously / following...
  23. elevated tTG can be seen with diabetes and other inflammatory autoimmune conditions....what I see - is that it appears the levels ARE dropping (from 184 to 60) - and please remember ( and docs too)..that antibodies produced by your body dont just go down to zero immediately. We have memory cells in the immune system and bone marrow that pass on the "antibody...
  24. Thank you Lisa B! Yes, I get mixed up sometimes - we filled out the Disability form cause Matt is both celiac and diabetic - Type 1 children are now eligible for the tax credit. It is the medical expense claim as provided by Lisa - that is what you are looking for. Sandy
  25. I will find the link - there is a form to fill out to claim the deduction - it is not fun however - you keep receipts for all gluten free food then make a list of how many you bought - the $$ total, Then you have to price out the "normal" wheat alternative and claim the difference between the two. Example: ( I am just making up prices to give you an idea...
