  1. Sam's does not carry gluten-free specialty products. richard
  2. All I know is that I could roll in flour (not something I would do) and it would have no affect on me whatsoever. And I had DH. I guess some people have larger skin pores or no skin barrier at all. I trust the experts and my own tests. richard
  3. I agree with Lisa. If wheat isn't listed, it's OK. richard

    ARCHIVED French Fries

Yes you were. FF are generally gluten-free, BUT they have to be cooked in a dedicated fryer and many places do not do that. There are also fries that have a wheat coating. You have to check. richard
  5. La Choy is most definitely gluten-free and always has been. Wheat is the ingredient that most soy sauces have and in the U.S. it HAS to be listed. In fact, it was always listed even before the allergen law. As for caramel color, the alleged danger there is wheat (I've never found caramel color with wheat), not barley, rye or oats. Again, in the U.S. it...
  6. This is wrong. Protein molecules are simply too large to be absorbed through the skin. In fact, moisturizers and lotions are not absorbed into your body at all. They simply moisturize the outer layers of skin but do not break through the skin barrier. There are many, many things -- in fact, most things -- that cannot be absorbed through the skin. Yes, there...
  7. My son and I share toothpaste and I've never been contaminated that I know of. Heck, neither one of us even touches the tube with the brush when we squeeze. I would rate this one way, way, way down on the list of possible CC sources. richard
  8. I don't know of a major brand that ISN'T gluten-free. richard
  9. You don't use flavored coffees but plenty others do. And I was simply pointing out that in the U.S., coffee is pretty much OK. I would certainly hope people still read ingredients. I do. richard
  10. I challenge anybody to show us a coffee maker that uses flour to keep beans from sticking. There would be no reason to do so. Where did this notion come from? In addition, any flavored coffee that uses wheat would now have to list the wheat. Can anybody name a specific coffee that has wheat? richard
  11. Don't know what you reacted to, but Miracle Whip is gluten-free. Personally, I can't stand the stuff, but it is gluten-free. richard
  12. Lots of things have iodine but a couple of the bigger ones are iodized table salt and shellfish. You cat'y completely eliminate iodine nor would you want to. You need it to live. richard
  13. I feel any kind of distilled liquor is gluten-free but if you want to be REAL careful, Bacardi rums (or any rum really) and Smirnoff vodkas -- even the flavored ones -- do not start with a wheat base and are definitely gluten-free. If you're in the U.S., however, you cannot have the Smirnoff Ice. It's malted. richard
  14. Meat is guided by USDA laws, one of which calls for anything that adds nutrition to be clearly listed. The USDA considers all grains nutritious and therefore requires that ANY grain added be listed. This in fact has been the law covering meat for a number of years now, even before the allergen law. All or virtually all of the broths or flavorings I've seen...
  15. "Just remember, this only stands true of wheat, not barley or rye...barley and rye do not need to be listed on the label, not by law.
  16. Going to Hilton Head for the first time ever in two weeks. We'll make most of our own meals but will be eating out some. I'm aware of chains that are helpful but that's not what I really want while I'm there. I am a BIG seafood fan and realize I can get plenty of that steamed or broiled. BUT, are there any special local places any of you all have gone...

    ARCHIVED Dh Rash?

Doesn't sound like my DH. Everybody I know who has had DH describes it as terribly itchy. Worse than poison ivy. And mine appeared as blisters filled with clear fluid -- sort of like a burn. Following the next gastro -- but NOT before -- you could always elect to make him gluten-free and see what happens. If various symptoms improve, you have your answer...
  18. It means that natural flavors are much lower on the concern list because wheat was the major problem there. If barley is used it will almost always be listed as malt. Never heard of rye or oats in natural flavors and actually never heard of either being hidden, but I guess it's possible. I no longer, however, call a company just because of natural flavors...
  19. "I can't help wondering if the whole swine flu thing was a brilliant marketing ploy to sell Tamiflu and flu shots in the current economy. If it was, it's certainly successful." Was it the Bilderbergers or the U.N. that organized this conspiracy? As to the original question, a person on the gluten-free diet is certainly not more likely to get the flu...
  20. The USDA has for years required that anything of nutritive value added to meat be clearly identified. This includes any type of grain. If it doesn't say wheat, rye or barley in the ingredients, it's gluten-free. And if there WERE wheat in something else, it would also have to be listed under allergen laws. richard
  21. Couldn't work for 10 weeks and after that only half time for a while. If my job had been more a physical one, it would have been even longer. richard
  22. Never found one. Perhaps they just don't hold together at a large size. Even the smaller ones fall apart sometimes. richard
  23. Virtually all advice I've seen or heard says to start gluten at the "regular" time. Avoiding gluten isn't necessary. Watching for symptoms as he grows is necessary. Neither one of my children has celiac. richard
  24. Progresso clearly lists any gluten. richard
  25. I'm fortunate -- well, fortunate in a way. My family saw me in the hospital for 11 days, apparently dying. They saw me miss 10 weeks of work and take months more to recover. And the only thing I did different before I got better was stop eating gluten. They KNOW this isn't just a choice, it's a necessity. richard
