ARCHIVED Mozart And The Whale
jayhawkmom replied to 2kids4me's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I'm going to have to find and watch this movie. When my older son was 5, we had a full developmental screening done - as his pediatrician was starting to consider he might be "an aspie." The panel of doctors (numerous developmental specialists) sat my husband and I down in a room and pretty much said something to the effect of, "he's much smarter than... -
I apologize. I'm not trying to be negative. I know how difficult this is. I have three gluten-free kiddos, the oldest, the one who's been "gluten lovin'" the longest, was the last to be dx. He's unhappy. He's rebelling. And, he's not eating (anything!). He'd love to be able to go to KFC for *anything* at this point, even if it was just for COTC. I just...

I can't even conceive of what could possibly have *ever* been gluten free at KFC. All the chicken is coated in flour. Just look at their website - the allergen and sensitivity page. The only thing you can get there that doesn't outright contain wheat is tomato slices, lettuce, and cole slaw - however, the cole slaw is NOT free of gluten.

ARCHIVED For Those In Kansas City Metro Area.....
jayhawkmom posted a topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I just received this from my CSA Chapter president: This Just In..... Mike Lee, Managing Partner of the Grand Street Cafe, 4740 Grand, announces that all menu items can be modified to exclude gluten; and Grand Street is serving gluten-free rolls, sandwiches, and pasta. WOOO HoooOOO!!! =) -
HUGE fan here too!! In fact, when the last book came out, dh and I had the kiddos at Borders for Harry's birthday party!! My older child dared me to play "Bertie Botts Wheel of MisFortune." I ended up eating three jelly beans - pepper, vomit, and grass. Ummmm, can you say... nasty?? He just laughed and laughed. It was a lot of fun, they made magic...

ARCHIVED Do I Have To Eat "bad" Food So It Will Show Up On Allergy Test?
jayhawkmom replied to Cougar09's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Allergy tests are not the same as Celiac tests. If you are allergic to something, you don't have to be consuming it to react. If you suspect you are allergic to milk, by all means... don't drink it. I have three children who have been allergy tested (both RAST tests and Skin tests) numerous times. I would *never* purposely feed them foods that I thought... -
ARCHIVED Chicken Strips
jayhawkmom replied to Confused in Iowa's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
That was one thing my older son was really upset about... losing his chicken nuggets. We've tried the Bell & Evans chicken strips, and I absolutely LOVE them. He likes them. We've tried the Wellshire Kids (Dino) Chicken, and while I thought they were "so-so" - he absolutely loved them. Ian's Chicken is also pretty darn tasty!! Though, they... -
ARCHIVED Pin The Allergy On The Donkey
jayhawkmom replied to Adelle's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I'm the same way!! Ivory has caused me to have hives and eczema so badly that I've scratched myself so hard I've bled, A LOT!! I was not aware of oral allergies until recently - when my daughter started "reacting" to foods we are fairly certain she's NOT allergic to. Her pediatrician confirmed a "citrus sensitivity" after drinking orange juice caused... -
ARCHIVED Is There Any Society For People With Celiac Disease
jayhawkmom replied to haze63's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
We are members of the CSA - Celiac Sprue Association. We attend monthly meetings and our children participate with the Cel-Kids Network, specifically for children who are Celiacs. I do get a LOT of help here, but sitting and talking with others who get it, on a personal and face to face level, has really helped beyond comprehension. -
ARCHIVED Pin The Allergy On The Donkey
jayhawkmom replied to Adelle's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Do you have any environmental allergies that you are aware of?? I ask because sometimes, people who have environmental allergies have cross-reactivity with certain foods, and it causes oral allergy syndrome. For example... people who are allergic to birch pollen frequently react to peaches, apples, pears, and a bunch of other foods. People allergic... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Panel Results
jayhawkmom replied to a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I honestly don't know. With regards to the IgA - is that 9.9 or 99?? Juliet posted this link yesterday and it really helped me further comprehend blood test results.... pretty interesting read. Looks like with an elevated IgA - there is a 97% chance that it's Celiac related, if the total syrum IgA is normal. If his is 99, with a normal TT syrum... -
ARCHIVED What Do Serology Test Results Mean? (informative!)
jayhawkmom posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Juliet posted this link yesterday... and I want to give her a serious "Thank You!!!" This link answers pretty much every question I could have come up with, regarding the issue of the blood tests!!! Thank you, Juliet!!!! And, here's the link - any and all information regarding the blood tests, the results, interpretation, and ALL that!! Open Original... -
ARCHIVED gluten-free Pizza Delivery In Kansas City!
jayhawkmom replied to KellyM's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Ohhh, I honestly don't know about *that* Jessica!! My kids won't eat meat on their pizza, so I never even considered to think about it. I hope you didn't feel "icky" for too long. My older child just had positive blood tests and is really frustrated. I was thinking of taking him to Waldo, as a special treat, just to remind him that his life is NOT... -
ARCHIVED Igg + But All Others Negative?
jayhawkmom replied to janelyb's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Same thing with my daughter and I. Both our other numbers were high within normal ranges (under 11 was normal)... but we both had elevated IgG. Her's was 72 - mine was 69. When I put her on a gluten free diet, she gained 5 lbs and grew 3 inches within 5 months. And, that was after she hadn't grown or gained ANY weight in 2 years!!! My older son had... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Baked Goods Business
jayhawkmom replied to debb's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I'm from WNY - where are you located? I just wanted to wish you well! We have a Celiac baker near us... and I don't know what I'd do without her. I'm so NOT good in the kitchen... at least, not with baked goods! -
ARCHIVED Sensory Processing Disorder Conference 2007
jayhawkmom replied to wonkabar's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Wow. If I lived in Florida... I'd so be there! =) My "big guy" has a DX of SPD. He was in Occupational Therapy for several years and is about a billion times more able to handle "life situations" but still has the occasional and isolated incident, usually involving fireworks, tornado sirens, or flashing lights. *ugh* I would LOVE to see Carol Kranowicz... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Panel Results
jayhawkmom replied to a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Paula, Those two alone are not a Celiac panel. A Celiac panel consists of: tTG-IgA or tissue transglutaminase-IgA AGA-IgG or Antigliadin IgG AGA-IgA or Antigliadin IGA Total IGA The IgA & IgG antibody tests aren't really enough to diagnose anything, much less Celiac. They are highly suggestive of gluten intolerance or other "leaky gut" issues... -
ARCHIVED Help Wtth Results Of Celiac Panel
jayhawkmom replied to a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I was assuming she meant IgA and IgG anti-gliadin antibodies, since the two seem to go hand in hand. If I was wrong, I'm sorry for misunderstanding!! =) -
ARCHIVED Help Wtth Results Of Celiac Panel
jayhawkmom replied to a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Sure. =) The total syrum is important to know whether or not the person is IgA deficient, and if so - the results have to be interpreted differently. tTg and EMA are *very* specific to Celiac - so if those two are elevated, it's a good bet that a Celiac dx is in the future. IgG and IgA antibody tests DO tell of gluten intolerance or other leaky gut... -
ARCHIVED gluten-free Pizza Delivery In Kansas City!
jayhawkmom replied to KellyM's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Ohhh, that's not good!!!! The person who owns the bakery that supplies the gluten-free crusts personally trained the staff on how to deal with CC issues. Oh, that's very upsetting to read. She will want to know that!!! I'm so sorry!!! -
ARCHIVED Help Wtth Results Of Celiac Panel

What about the tTg results? The EMA? And, what about total syrum IgA?? -
I'm no where near the South, and we have Sonic on every other corner. =) I love my Route 44 diet Dr. Pepper! =) I was also told that the Tots and Fries are gluten-free, but CC can be an issue if there is not a dedicated fryer.

ARCHIVED Book Gluten Free For Dummies
jayhawkmom replied to Rebecca47's topic in Publications & Publicity
I agree, it's a wonderful book. It was the first book I purchased when the doctor said, "Perhaps Celiac testing is necessary" when discussing my daughter. I attended a conference last summer - and Danna Korn signed it for my daughter! =) -
Sorry, I didn't mean to confuse. I actually use Beth's AP - purchased from the Gluten Free Pantry (Open Original Shared Link free.com/item_detail.aspx?ItemCode=126013M) I found the recipe for the flour mix - which is not the same as the mix that I purchased, at a different website) Again... sorry for the confusion!! =)
