My mother recently discovered she is also intolerant to soy. I am doing an elimination diet and am quite sure I am intolerant to it as well. I think my issues with milk is because my intestines are just too damaged. I plan to try to add it back in towards the end of my diet. I'm on halt right now due to having to take antibiotics. I have a nasty bronchial infection.

I am doing well on it. If you want to read about my experience with it so far, it's in the other intolerances and leaky gut issues area.

I have to take a vitamin D/Calcium supplement...also a multivitamin that is free from allergens. I also am taking a pro/prebiotic and an enzyme to help replace the good bacteria in my intestines.

What do you do now? I would suggest an elimination diet as I am doing. You can easily find out what is bothering you. Long process, but well worth it. I'm sure other's on here can give you some really good advice. I just wanted to share my two cents.

to replace soy milk in your cereal you could do almond, hazelnut, hemp, or coconut milk. Some brands have added the calcium and vitamin but I also take a vitamin supplement. Pacific is a good brand. Once I eliminated the soy, I rarely have stomach issues now. So maybe you've found a new answer as well. :)

If you are newly gluten free, sometimes both dairy and soy will bother you until your intestines have had time to heal.

IMO soy barely even counts as food. I don't personally believe its good for anyone, especially not celiacs or gluten intolerant people. I stay far away from all soy. It's bad news.

I had always been leary of soy, and now I think of it as mouse poison, reserving rat poison for gluten.

Soy may be deeply ingrained in our food supply but we really should not be eating so much of it and especially not unfermented. Soy is meant to be eaten fermented, or if non-fermented, in very moderate amounts. You may have to look into supplements if you can't get enough calcium from your diet. I don't feel sick after eating soy but I avoid it anyway - had an "enlarged" neck (doctors have told me goiter, enlarged thyroid) until I cut out soy. Would not touch that stuff unless it is fermented properly.

these were great responses,,thanks,,i started soy milk a month or so ago and it ripped my belly up,,i surely had leaky guy,i was worried something was wrong with me until i decided to have a lil bowl of cereal with soy to relax my gut and b4 i finished i felt nauseous and ended up in the bathroom the rest of the night,,i poured out a 4.29 cent carton of it!!..sad thing is that was over a week ago and last night i suddenly felt the same way so now not sure what the heck i am doing wrong.i drive myself nuts trying to read every label and having more veggies than anything i think is not helping me,,to much fiber all the time perhaps,i dunno,im getting discusted with the entire bathroom thing! i dont want to eat at all anymore,so many crappy things in our food and the good food is to much on me perhaps until i heal,, i thought i was healed,,,i had like a week of feeling great, and then pow!!!

I can't have soy or dairy. I add green leafy vegetables to my food whenever I can. Plenty of calcium in there! I also take supplements.

Hello,

I had the same thing happen. I went gluten free, but still having Dairy because of being new to the diet and feeling like there was nothing left I could eat, I'm half Italian...I LOVE my pastas and all CHEESES :D

I had to find something to put on my gluten-free cereal in the morning, so I tried Silk in the vanilla flavor. I never used it before, but I noticed I would get these bad stomach aches, figured out Soy was not agreeing with me either....at all! It was bad. I guess it did more damage than good.

Just last week I bought the So Delicious brand Coconut Milk in Vanilla, I LOVE it, plus the health benefits from Coconut alone are so worth it to me!! When I read an article on Whole Foods website. Open Original Shared Link

I know I have to find non-dairy alternatives to heal up. The article was loaded with ideas and consumer reviews on the brands/flavors that they love.

I've had the enterolab test done and that's it so far, but I'm pretty sure I have leaky gut.

I have all the symptoms and not sure where to go from here...(insurance).

I agree that soy is no good for us. Not even remotely ok for me anyway. Hemp milk or coconut milk would be worth checking out. The ones I have seen so far are soy free.

I've been lactose intolerant for years, but I still need to drink the odd vitamin enhanced shake. Milk shakes tend to overwhelm me and make me ill. Lactaid pills or no Lactaid pills, I have to take like 4 just to be able to manage one so I finally did the supposedly healthy thing last year and switched to a soy based shake.

One day of soy based, milk-free shakes and I was in utter agony. Turns out I react to major doses of soy in a big, bad, way. I've had that reaction to MSG and to Asian food several times in the past, always chalked it up to food poisoning.

I try not to eat soy at all, but it's been almost impossible to eliminate it completely. It's in everything these days practically, but yes, you can react to soy the very same way you do to gluten.

I use Lactaid cow's milk and/or almond milk now for my shakes. More almond than cow at this point, actually. I usually save my cow's milk for cheese!

Celiac Disease causes more vitamin D deficiency than the general population because of limited UV sunlight in the winter and the little available from food is not absorbed well in the damaged small intestine.  Taking 10,000 IU a day (250 mcg) a day broke my depression. Taking it for eleven years.  Doctor recently said to not stop.  My 25(OH)D is around 200 nmol/L (80 ng/ml) but it took about six years to get there.  Increasing vitamin D also increases absorption of Calcium. A good start is 100-gram (3.5-ounce) serving of salmon,  vitamin D from 7.5 to 25 mcg (300 to 1,000 IU) but it is going to take additional vitamin D supplement to be effective.  More importantly salmon has an omega-6 to omega-3 ratio 1:10 anti-inflammatory compared to the 15:1 infammatory ratio of the typical Western diet. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.  I respectfully disagree.  You cherry picked a small section from the page.  I will do the same below: The agency is seeking information on adverse reactions due to “ingredients of interest” (i.e., non-wheat gluten containing grains (GCGs) which are rye and barley, and oats due to cross-contact with GCGs) and on labeling issues or concerns with identifying these “ingredients of interest” on packaged food products in the U.S. “People with celiac disease or gluten sensitives have had to tiptoe around food, and are often forced to guess about their food options,” said FDA Commissioner Marty Makary, M.D., M.P.H. “We encourage all stakeholders to share their experiences and data to help us develop policies that will better protect Americans and support healthy food choices.” --- end quote Anyone with celiac disease is clearly a stakeholder.  The FDA is encouraging us to share our experiences along with any data to help develop future "policies that will better protect Americans and support healthy food choices".  I see this as our chance to speak up or forever hold our peace.  Like those that do not participate in elections, they are not allowed to complain.  The way I see it, if we do not participate in this request for public comment/feedback, then we should also not complain when we get ill from something labeled gluten-free. Have a blessed day ahead, Known1

Here is a link to the spreadsheet I kept to track my nutrition intakes.  Maybe it will give you ideas. It is not https so browsers may flag a security warning. There is nothing to send or receive. http://doodlesnotes.net/index3.html I tracked everything I ate, used the National Nutrition Database https://www.foodrisk.org/resources/display/41 to add up my daily intake and supplemented appropriately.  It tracks about 30 nutrients at once.

Hello @catnapt, That's so true.  Every person with Celiac Disease has different symptoms.  There are over 200 that it mimics.  Too many still believe that it is only a childhood disease you outgrow.  Or it's psychosomatic or simply a fad.  Idiots.  It's easy to get angry at all of them.   You just have to pick at the answers until you find the ones that work for you.  I too suffer from not being able to take the drugs that work for "everyone else".  SSRIs make me twitch ane feel like toothpicks are holding my eye open, ARBs cripple me.  Statins cause me intestinal Psuedo Obstruction.  Espresso puts me to sleep.  I counted 19 different symptoms that improved from GFD and dealing with my nutritional defecits.  I couldn't breath through my mouth until I started GFD at 64 years old.   My son was born with celiac disease, biopsy diagnosed at weaning.   So why are we the one-percenters.  Why, after being silent for so long, does it suddenly flare? There is the possibility that you have both Celiac Disease and Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity.  NCGS was not established as a diagnosis until 1980.  NCGS is diagnost by first elimating Celiac Disease as the cause, and showing improvement on GFD.  Nothing says you can't have symptoms from both.  Wheatbelly: Total Nutrition by Dr. Davis was helpful to me. We come to the forum to share what we've learned in dealing with our own symptoms.  Maybe this will help someone. Speaking of which if you don't mind; what is your 25(OH)D vitamin D blood level?  You mentioned a mysterious Calcium issue. Vitamin D, Calcium and Iodine are closely interactive. It is not uncommon for postmenopausal women to have insufficient intake of Iodine.   (RDA): Average daily level of intake sufficient to meet the nutrient requirements of nearly all (97%–98%) healthy individuals; often used to plan nutritionally adequate diets for individuals You are a one-percenter.  You may need higher intake of some essential nutrient supplements to speed up repairing the damages.
