Simple question here. When I was telling my Dr. About all my problems , when we were talking possibly Celiac. He asked me If my joints hurt. I said "nope". Now almost 4 months in. My joints have started to hurt. Like walking up and down the steps and stuff. Is it a withdrawal ? Why now? After almost 4 months of being Gluten free? Just curious .. I will talk to him about this next time I see him but I was wondering if anyone knew..

sorry w8in4dave that that's started happening  :(  About this time last year I was having bone pain and joint pain, but since going gluten free, it disappeared for me.  I've only had joint pain once since going gluten free and that was from an accidental glutening.

Diagnosed with celiac disease, but my fat malabsoption, EPI and Vitamin K deficiency have finally cleared themselves up do to the help from Creon!

Thankful for all the help I've received from members on this board!

Happy to have answers  :)

Are you sure you aren't getting glutened? Intolerances?  I hope you figure it out and feel better soon.

Did a little searching in the forum about joint pain.  I found that it could be another autoimmune disorder like lupus or RA -- maybe even Lyme Disease.  Hope this helps.

Ohhh I see hmm Well I know my Dr. Has looked for Lupus before and It has always turned up negative, but RA? Realllly? Hmmm I guess he has never looked for that because I have never had this pain. Something to ponder on huh. I know once you have an Auto immune you will more than likely get another. Well I will just keep at the Gluten free and hope this pain goes away. I will talk to the Dr. Next time I see him... Lets just hope I am just achie lol

I had flare-ups of joint pain for a decade or so prior to my diagnosis. It would start with feeling flu-ish and then the joints would get very weak and sore, most likely hurting for a few months but sometimes the pain in a joint would last a few years.  When I went gluten-free, at about the 3 month mark, I had a pretty severe flare-up. My joints would give out on me and little things like using scissors became difficult again. I was pretty convinced that it was caused by lupus, but I understood that I might just be one of the unlucky few who take months to years to heal... I just didn't accept it.

After three more months the pain went away and I eventually saw a rheumy about RA and lupus. The doctor agreed with some of our more senior board members that it probably was lingering celiac problems. I haven't had any more major joint problems in the last 8 month so I am cautiously optimistic that they are right.

Anyway, the point of my rambling was to say that in my experience, new joint pains can crop up in the recovering months after going gluten-free, and it can be many months afterwards too. By all means get it checked out (just in case) but keep celiac disease in consideration and maintain your patience.

I hope the pain goes sooner rather than later.  :)

Nightshades are a trigger for joint pain also.  When people go gluten-free, they often end up eating more nightshades than they had in the past.  Most gluten-free bread, pasta etc is made with various flours and often they contain potato flour.  So if you eat a lot of gluten-free baked goods etc you may have more nightshades than in the past.  Food nightshades are potatoes, tomatoes, peppers and eggplant.

Proverbs 25:16 "Hast thou found honey? eat so much as is sufficient for thee, lest thou be filled therewith, and vomit it."

Job 30:27 My bowels boiled, and rested not: the days of affliction prevented me.

Thyroid cyst and nodules, Lactose / casein intolerant. Diet positive, gene test pos, symptoms confirmed by Dr-head. My current bad list is: gluten, dairy, sulfites, coffee (the devil's brew), tea, Bug's Bunnies carrots, garbanzo beans of pain, soy- no joy, terrible turnips, tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, eggplant, celery, strawberries, pistachios, and hard work. Have a good day! 🙂 Paul

I don't eat alot of Gluten Free Baked goods. In fact I have only eaten i cupcake in 4 months. I have never been about bread. The only reason I ate the cupcake is because it was my Daughters BD cake. I am not eating anymore nightshades .. Maby a potato or two a week. I don't like peppers and eggplant so no. And I have not eaten Tomatoes yet because my garden is not up to par as of yet... So i am thinking it is not any of that!! Will keep it in mind tho :) Thanks:)

Hi,

If the joint pain is related to cheese, you may need to avoid all dairy.  Cheese is mostly dairy protein.  But milk and other dairy products often have the protein in them.  So just avoiding cheese wouldn't be enough to stop a reaction.  You might not notice a reaction with milk, but it could still be happening.

I had strong reactions to dairy at first when I was gluten-free.  They have changed over the years and are not so strong now.  You may find that after you have been gluten-free for 6 months to a year, that you are able to tolerate dairy better.  Or it might be a case where you need to avoid it forever.

There are lots of alternative dairy options these days to choose from though.   So it's not a big problem to go dairy free.

Kind of interesting learning new things about your body at times isn't it? :D

Well while you're trying to find out what is causing pain/inflamation to your joints. There's a couple of recipes I use when i have flare ups which maybe worth a try...they're yummy too!

http://www.rebootwithjoe.com/in-the-reboot-kitchen-pina-colada/

Or.. juice some apples, carrots, half a lemon and about an inch of fresh ginger (or frozen)

Or slice a piece of fresh ginger into hot water and enjoy :)

Joint pain was never one of my symptoms before being diagnosed.  But now (2 years later) if I accidentally get glutened (cross contamination? I never intentionally eat it) it is the first symptom to show up.  All my joints ache for a couple of days.  Has happened twice, both after eating out of the house (wedding and vacation) but sticking to gluten free foods.

My celiac son started complaining about not feeling well as well as joint aches and we spent MONTHS trying to figure out where he was getting gluten.  We just assumed it was gluten.  He blood tests continued to come back clear so we started looking elsewhere. Turns out he had Lyme Disease from a bit almost 12 months earlier.  Luckily I had kept a photo of the weird, circular rash he had.
