I've heard that one too.  All I can think is really???  you have so little self control that you'd rather be forced into never eating gluten again than to eat healthy by choice??

I think what actually gets me most about this is that people assume that gluten-free equates to healthy.  You can actually eat just as unhealthy on a gluten-free diet as you can on any other type of diet.  People can be so moronic.

So I definitely would LOVE to give up all the health problems and the cross contaminations and the restrictions on my life from celiac, but I have to admit that no longer being tempted by treats all the time is one of the silver linings I treasure...not that I'd ever volunteer for celiac, but I really do enjoy not having to stand there and debate should I/shouldn't I whenever I'm around  cake/cookies/cupcakes or whatever : ) Amazing how much room my brain has for other things once I can just walk by the treats without a second thought and go on with my day! (Let me loose in a gluten-free bakery and it's a whole other situation, but fortunately I have to go pretty far out of my way to get to one!).

Haha, I love all of these!

I have also gotten the "I wish I had that!" and I want to punch them. Every time. It's almost as bad as "I could never do that". Well, you could, if you had to...

Speaking of medical professionals, when I told my doctor that cutting out gluten stopped my migraines, her response was, "huh".

Re: people who are gluten-free but still eat it, I know someone who eats gluten all the time. Mostly she just gets diarrhea (which she doesn't mind), and if she eats it a LOT she starts to get migraines. And then it's "awe, man, I have to rest. This totally sucks". Her general philosophy, is that if she's going to eat gluten, she should have a lot so it can get out of her system...?  She makes no sense. This is the same person who told me that I can't have cheese because the anticaking stuff is flour (which maybe used to be the case but isn't); that gluten can be absorbed through the skin and make me sick; and that I can't eat meat unless the animal was gluten free as well. Until I did some research, I was living off rice and fruit. I lost 7 lbs in a month! She just wants people to think it is so hard, and that it sucks being her. And then she eats it anyways. GAH!

I was atthe lil store we go to one day. The girl behind the counter said you lose weight? I said yes I did I lost over 30 lbs. She said OMG how did you do that? I said well I was DX'd with Celiac disease, I cannot eat anything with wheat , Rye or Barley , He response we Ohhh I have a friend that lost weight on that diet. I should do that diet! I want to lose weight so bad!! I said believe me it is a very strict diet and it is a vary hard diet to follow. If you don't have Celiac or are not sensitive to Gluten I wouldn't try following the diet. She said ohhh I am going to try the diet! ... I'm like what ever. My goodness I try to explain to people how hard it is because 90% of everything in the store has Gluten in it. And there is such thing as CC .. They still say!! Ohhh I should follow that diet! When someone asks me what happens if I eat it I say. It is like eating poison ivy for me!! My guts swell up and I spend my time in the rest room! Then I puke my guts out and feel horrid for weeks!

I live in California so there are a lot of lifestyle gluten free people, which is mostly great but I get a lot of:

-"So I hear you're going gluten free?".."Actually I done GONE. I don't really have a choice"

-"You know if you have nice sour dough bread it cancels out the gluten"

-"It's only the GMO wheat that you have to worry about"

-"I'm trying to eat gluten free but last night I was bad and had rice"

-"Have you lost so much weight?" "Actually it kind of sucks because I gained, I was naturally skinny my whole life" (and then I watch the wheels turning...on a diet but gains weight,...cannot compute)

I read this one somewhere on the internet, but it was so hilarious it is worth repeating

Gluten-free person (gluten-free) trying to explain what gluten is to a resturant waitperson (WP) for who english is not their first language.

gluten-free:  I can't eat gluten

WP:  puzzled look

gluten-free:  Flour, I have an issue with flour

WP:  promptly removes the vase with a rose from the table and walks away.

That's funny!

Health food store owner who is also a celiac told daughter that she could have sprouted grains because once sprouted they turned into a live food.  Yep!  They did.  And they made her just as sick as the dead grain did.  Sheesh.  I should have known better on that one but she said it so brightly and assured us that she could eat whatever it was.  Can't remember now if it was tortillas or bread.

She also told me that I (with an egg intolerance) would probably be able to eat the eggs from *her* chickens and that I should try them.  Riiiight.

I heard the sourdough thing yesterday! Some guy was saying that sourdough is not a problem for people with gluten issues. I was baffled. Do people actually believe this crap?

I actually had a friend tell me Italian bread was ok.  And that bread from Italy and France is more "pure" so wouldn't bother me.

Well I found one source of this (mis)information: Open Original Shared Link

This article says that European wheat and sourdough are safer for gluten intolerant people. This seems so irresponsible!

Agreed!  Especially when they have just as many Celiacs in Europe as we do here in the US:  https://www.celiac.com/articles/22487/1/Screening-Study-Shows-Higher-Prevalence-for-Celiac-Disease/Page1.html

"Ceiac.com 03/28/2011 - While rates of diagnosed celiac disease are less than 1 in 2,000 in the United States, screening studies in European and other populations have shown a much higher prevalence."

while I'm sure sourdough is better for you IF you CAN eat gluten, saying that it's safe for celiacs and other gluten intolerance is total baloney (or something much harsher) and very irresponsible). People need to give up their attachment to this need for "normal" bread. There's some really good gluten-free bread out there! It doesn't have to be full of sugar and refined flours. But of course those with an idea of what bread should be like probably wouldn't touch organic whole grain breads either...  (sorry, rant).

Very new to the gluten-free lifestyle (2 1/2 weeks).  When I told my mom, she said , "Oh, so you just need to eat better". My mom also thinks that I have gluten issues because of all my crazy diets over the years, which I am not sure what she is talking about.

And then tonight, talking to a friend online, known him for about 6 years, he said "Oh so you just have to cut out carbs".  So I tried to explain gluten is from wheat, barley and rye and is in lots of things including bread, but also in a lot of  like salad dressings, chicken broth , etc.  His response was "No bread.  That's going to be tough.  Good for you. I gotta clean my diet up too".  I am not doing this for a "diet" or for fun or for a fad, I'm doing this because I don't have an alternative.

I also had another friend ask what Celiac was , his wife interrupted and stated it is an allergy to gluten.  He asked what gluten was, she said it's in wheat, so she can't have bread and doughnuts and stuff like that.  I tried to explain to them a little more and her response was, "Yay I try to eat healthy too" and then proceeded to tell her husband that she wanted Arby's for dinner because they had Taco Bell the night before and then Wendys for lunch.

I am new at this and it is frustrating at times.  I understand that most don't get what gluten is or how it is in almost everything.  But, if you ask and I tell you, then please have the courtesy to listen to what I say.

It was actually suggested to me awhile back when i was feeling nauseaus from getting glutened somehow to try eating some toast to settle my stomach!!! I said i can't eat that it will kill me! She said well i didn't think 1or2 pieces would bother you too much! That was my MOTHER! So frustrating dealing with people that just don't get it!

So I was on vacation last week in a strange town at a restaurant that was celiac friendly, the waitress had totally impressed me so far with her gluten-free knowledge until I asked her if they have a dedicated fryer for their french fries.  She hesitated and then told me "Well usually each night it is the same person all night at the fry station but sometimes they do need to take a break so they switch out."  It took all I had to not hysterically fall over laughing right there.(My husband and I are still randomly cracking up over that.)  I explained to her a little more what I meant and turned out yes, there is a dedicated fryer for fries only, done at a different temp than everything else.  Cheesy bacon french fries for me!  :)   I am sure she felt very blonde at that moment!  But gosh it cracks me up still!

Oh that is a knee slapper for sure! Poor gal.

Ha! I'm sure the fryer was very dedicated to their, er, fryer...

I am fortunate enough to have a fish and chips place near me with a dedicated fryer for gluten-free batter, and dedicated fryer just for the fries. I have to be careful not to eat there too often though cause, well, it's fish and chips. 2 words: Onion Rings. (!!!!!)

Ok, back to the ridiculousness...

My favorites have always been "You can eat THAT?"

And "I may have a fat a---, but at least it looks like I can afford to eat!"

Gotta luv the idiots out walking around and commenting/questioning.  It adds the spice to life.

My favourite one is when you tell someone and they turn around and say 'oh, well a little bit won't do any harm'

YES, YES IT WILL! Tell me there's no harm when I'm lying in bed dying of heartburn and cramps.

Marilyn R Community Regular

Depending on who said that, I'd feel a real need to respond "Yea, you're right, just like a little sexually transmitted disease won't hurt you."

Argh! I've just had this this evening (so I'm on here instead of throttling my flatmate)

She offered me some soup she'd made. I said, 'Oh, is it gluten free?' (Stupid question, should just have said no! I wouldn't share pans anyway) cue 'Well I don't know. I don't know what has gluten in it' Fair enough, but then: 'A spoonful wouldn't kill you, anyway' No honey, it wouldn't, but seeing as her bedroom is next to our bathroom she would also know about it ;) quite apart from releasing the intestine-destroying little b*ggers anyway.

Sigh. I thought they got it... Decided that after my 3 month check up in January (where I expect my ttg numbers will still be way high anyway) I will take that as the opportunity to re-explain it to them.

Oh and - this week I was explaining how gluten-free prescriptions work in the UK. Time for 'Wow, I want free food! (yeah, free apart from the prescription charge) What other minor illness could I have so that I could get some?'

w8in4dave Community Regular

When I was first DX'd and was telling hubbs about it. He said the same thing "You can have some It won't hurt you" I said "yes it will hurt me! It's like eating Poison Ivy" I does get the Gluten thing now. But now trying to get him to understand the Corn thing sighhhh.

Marie1976 Enthusiast

LOL at all of these, I can totally relate. I've been vegetarian for over 20 years and vegan for 10+ so I'm totally used to people asking completely idiotic questions and making dumb remarks about what I can/can't eat. Maybe that was practice for being diagnosed with celiac because I get even more people who are clueless. And I hate when people say "I could never do that." As if we have a choice. (Well, I guess we could choose to eat whatever we want and then just suffer...?)

A waitress once brought me the gluten free menu I asked for, and then told me that they take gluten-free very seriously and then she brought me a BEER instead of the cider I ordered. I spit it out once I tasted it (I had a feeling it was beer but she inisted it wasn't so I took a sip). Then later she said, Yes it was a beer, she brought me the wrong drink, and then she asked me if she should call an ambulance. ???

Yes, I, too, have osteoporosis from years of malabsorption, too.  Thiamine and magnesium are what keep the calcium in place in the bones.  If one is low in magnesium, boron, selenium, zinc, copper, and other trace minerals, ones bone heath can suffer.  We need more than just calcium and Vitamin D for strong bones.  Riboflavin B 2, Folate B 9 and Pyridoxine B 6 also contribute to bone formation and strength.   Have you had your thyroid checked?  The thyroid is important to bone health as well.  The thyroid uses lots of thiamine, so a poorly functioning thyroid will affect bone heath.

That sounds so very likely in my case! I will absolutely ask my doctor on my next bone check coming up in March... Thanks a lot!
    • trents
Calcium levels as measured in the blood can be quite deceiving as the body will rob calcium from the bones to meet demands for it by other bodily functions. Also, supplementing with calcium can be counterproductive as it tends to raise gut pH and decrease absorption. More often than not, the problem is poor absorption to begin with rather than deficiency of intake amounts in the diet. Calcium needs an acidic environment to be absorbed. This is why so many people on PPIs develop osteoporosis. The PPIs raise gut pH. And some people have high gut PH for other reasons. Low pH equates to a more acidic environment whereas high pH equates to a more basic (less acidic) environment.

Kind thanks for all this valuable information! Since my Folate was/is low and also my Calcium, there IS a chance I am low in B vitamins... My doctor only measured the first two, oh and Zinc as I has twisted her arm and guess what, that was mega low too. So who knows, until I get myself tested properly, what else I am deficient in... I did a hair mineral test recently and it said to avoid All sources of Calcium. But this is confusing for me as my Ca is so low and I have osteoporosis because of this. It is my Adjusted Ca that is on the higher side and shouldn't be. So am not sure why the mineral test showed high Ca (well, it was medium in the test but relative to my lowish Magnesium, also via hair sample, it was high I was told). But anyway, thanks again for the VitB download, I will look into this most certainly!

Hello good afternoon, I was wondering if anyone has ever brought their anti-allergy pills? I have been wanting to use their Cetirizine HCI 10mg. They are called HealthA2Z and distributed by Allegiant Health.I’m also Asthmatic and these allergies are terrible for me but I also want to be sure they don’t have any sort of gluten compound.    I have tried calling them but to no avail. Has anyone ever used them? If so, did you had any problems or no problems at all?    thank you
