Stopping In To Say Hello!

I am alive and well - just very busy.  We are preparing for our gigantic move to Croatia in May which means listing and selling our house, vehicles, trying to decide what to take along (we are very restricted with space) and what to leave behind; what to sell and what to donate. We have no idea how many years we will be there but we are planning on many.  We do hope to visit family every summer in Canada which will be great.  We are also working through residency issues, learning the language, and so on.  We will soon be saying our farewells to family and friends (and our precious dog we only have for a few more weeks).   I have always been sentimental but am more now than ever.  However, thankfully there is Skype.  :)

Just wanted to give you a brief update.  Once settled, I will become a regular again.

All the best, everyone!  :D  I have missed you.  :(  Be well.

I was wondering what happened to you!  How exciting it is to start a new chapter in your life. Good luck with the move and we look forward to hearing from you again.  Your food input is sorely missed!  :D  It's good to know that our Julia Child of c.com is comin' back!

I am glad you have kept me up to date on email and I can truly understand the "I'm in the middle of moving and my head is spinning" thinger and why it takes you away from c.com. But, you know we are always here for you and I will remind you that I am on skype and I look forward to your missives from Croatia, dear girl.

Just take one day at a time. It will all work out in the end. Give me a shout on email when you have time.

And you have my phone number if you start to think "omg, this is nuts!" and I will tell you..."no, it isn't and once you land,

you will be the happiest girl on the planet!" ;)  Big giant hugs to you & D and just hang in there.

Miss and love ya, G.

When I moved I brought hardly anything with me. I sat and reminisced over just about every item before deciding whether to give it away, sell it, or throw it away. It took me FOREVER!

I'm sorry about the dog but I'm sure you've found it a good home.

And there's nothing like that feeling you get when you're finally HOME. You may be going through a rough time now, but once you're finally there and starting your new life it will be worth it and then some.

And for purley SELFISH reasons, I can't wait until you're settled in and back posting here on a regular basis. :D

Thanks for your lovely comments!  Yes, it is actually a little rough at this point, trying to get things accomplished while under the emotional stress of leaving family behind.  But we both know Croatia is where we belong, where we feel the most at home and the healthiest.  I look forward to settling in and cooking with astonishingly fresh and local ingredients including food from the sea!  :D

Make sure you get that guest bedroom set up or have a good B & B in town for guests to stay at because Croatia would be very doable as a vacation choice if I knew where the good gluten-free food was!  :P

So, you had both and endoscopy with biopsy and a colonoscopy. That helps me understand what you were trying to communicate. No, no! It never occurred to me that you were trying to mislead me. It's just that we get a lot of posters on the forum who are misinformed about what celiac disease is and how it is diagnosed so I need some clarification from you which you were so gracious to give.
    • barb simkin
I had both the genetic genes for celiac.  My gastroenologist advised he also took a biopsy during one of my colonoscopies and endoscopy and advised I had celiac disease, along with stomach ulcers from my esophagus stomach down to my small bowel. I was shown the ulcers on the catscan and endoscopy report.  I also had polyps in 3 places throughout my large bowel. I was on a strict diet for months following.  I am sorry if I didnt define how I was diagnosed with celiac disease.  I am sorry if you think I was misleading you. I also had to pay $150.00 for the genetic testing.

So, I'm a little confused here. I understand you to say that you have not been officially diagnosed with celiac disease. Is this correct?  You have had genetic testing done to check for the potential for developing celiac disease and that was positive. Is this correct? I think you meant to type "gluten sensitivity" but you typed "gluten insensitivity". Just so we are clear about the terminology, there is celiac disease and there is NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity). They are not the same but they have overlapping symptoms. Celiac disease causes damage to the small bowel lining but NCGS does not. NCGS is often referred to in short form as gluten sensitivity. However, people often use the terms celiac disease and gluten sensitivity interchangeably so it can be unclear which disease they are referring to. Genetic testing cannot be used to diagnose celiac disease but it can be used to establish the potential to develop active celiac disease. About 40% of the general population has one or both of  the genes that have been most strongly connected with the potential to develop active celiac disease but only about 1% of the population actually develops active celiac disease. This makes the genetic test useful for ruling out celiac disease but not for diagnosing it. A colonoscopy cannot be used to diagnose celiac disease because it doesn't permit the scope to go up into the small bowel where celiac disease does the damage. They use an endoscopy ("upper GI) for checking the small bowel lining for celiac damage.

I did nor read the chocolate pkg as it was of fered to me and I ate 2 pcs. I do know that only very dark chocolate and and a very few others are gluten free. Most alcohols contain gluten. I have several yrs of not knowing my celiac condition as docs would not do the test. After looking on the internet about my sufferings I insisted on the gene trsting which showed positive for gluten insensitivity and a biopsy on my next colonoscopy that also showed positive which could not help the damage done to my small bowel. So I very rarely have a glass of wine

@barb simkin, are you sure the chocolate products are gluten-free and not "manufactured on equipment that also handles wheat products and tree nuts", i.e., cross-contamination? And what kind of alcoholic beverages are we talking about? Most beers are made from gluten-containing grains. Just checking.
