Margarine Tubs

Okay, curious to know what y'all think about this....

I normally avoid condiments that gluten eaters have used.

Occasionally there's been a circumstance, though, where somebody dipped only a little bit of margarine from one end of the container and the whole other side of the container hasn't been dipped into at all. I got mine from the untouched side.

Is this a bad idea for any reason? Is there some reason that the other side of the margarine that hasn't been used could be already contaminated?

I wouldn't do it.

Thanks for your reply. I think that I will avoid doing so in the future, because I want to be careful. :)

I'm thankful for this forum. Though I started this journey years ago, there was a lot that I didn't know and I'm glad that I've been able to fill in my knowledge gaps.

This isn't really the question you asked, but it's about margarine so I wanted to mention it, since a lot of us can have issues digesting things.

I read that margarine is so highly processed (hydrogenated and what not) that it's not really even a food anymore, and if you set a tub of it outside, unrefrigerated, it won't change at all over time, and that even animals won't touch it.

I never tested this myself, but I still don't touch the stuff, or hydrogenated things altogether. Hope this was useful to you, if not just disregard :)

BlessedMommy Rising Star

I don't use hydrogenated margarine. I use Earth Balance spread which is non-hydrogenated. For the purpose of this question, I said "margarine" though because not everyone knows what that stuff is.

FruitEnthusiast Enthusiast

Glad to hear that, and to learn about a new product I hadn't heard of before. Thanks! :)

BlessedMommy Rising Star

Sure! There are a lot of different varieties of Earth Balance including a soy free version and an organic version. All of them are dairy free.

I wouldn't risk it. It's probably fine, but why take the chance? If there is ANY known potential risk I just don't do it. But I'm pretty much an anti-cross-contamination zealot!

CathyO Rookie

I have to be a zealot. I've been cross contaminated by flour dust inhalation.
From drinking out of a straw that my husband (who is not gluten free when dining out) had used.
I grabbed the wrong drink.

From kissing my husband after he ate a sandwich and before he brushed his teeth.

I was told by someone recently that I was being "ridiculous" about it.

I don't care.  I'd rather be ridiculous than in the cardiac care unit, again. I'd rather be ridiculous and be alive than risk being cross-contaminated.

I agree with many others that you shouldn't risk it.

On another note, margarine is horrible for you.  Hydrogenated oils are horrid for you and contain trans fats.  There is no limit on the amount of trans fats one should consume because we aren't supposed to eat them and are advised against eating them.  To really be healthy, eat as close to nature as you can get.  Butter is a far superior alternative, and in moderation, it won't make you gain weight.

I actually use Earth Balance spread, not hydrogenated margarine.

I only used the word "margarine" as a visually descriptive tool for the type of container I would be dipping out of, because not everybody has heard of Earth Balance non-hydrogenated buttery spreads. (which are trans fat free) Open Original Shared Link

Real butter isn't an option for me, I'm dairy free.

I wouldn't use the spread in the tub in that situation.  Just wouldn't be comfortable.  But when you think down to it and there is a pristine top still on the other half, you should be fine, but it isn't devoid of risk.  There is also the perception problem of people seeing you use the same tub as the bread crumby knives were in and not being taken seriously later.  Or passing off a bad habit to a kid out of misunderstanding.

Yes, I, too, have osteoporosis from years of malabsorption, too.  Thiamine and magnesium are what keep the calcium in place in the bones.  If one is low in magnesium, boron, selenium, zinc, copper, and other trace minerals, ones bone heath can suffer.  We need more than just calcium and Vitamin D for strong bones.  Riboflavin B 2, Folate B 9 and Pyridoxine B 6 also contribute to bone formation and strength.   Have you had your thyroid checked?  The thyroid is important to bone health as well.  The thyroid uses lots of thiamine, so a poorly functioning thyroid will affect bone heath.

That sounds so very likely in my case! I will absolutely ask my doctor on my next bone check coming up in March... Thanks a lot!

Calcium levels as measured in the blood can be quite deceiving as the body will rob calcium from the bones to meet demands for it by other bodily functions. Also, supplementing with calcium can be counterproductive as it tends to raise gut pH and decrease absorption. More often than not, the problem is poor absorption to begin with rather than deficiency of intake amounts in the diet. Calcium needs an acidic environment to be absorbed. This is why so many people on PPIs develop osteoporosis. The PPIs raise gut pH. And some people have high gut PH for other reasons. Low pH equates to a more acidic environment whereas high pH equates to a more basic (less acidic) environment.

Kind thanks for all this valuable information! Since my Folate was/is low and also my Calcium, there IS a chance I am low in B vitamins... My doctor only measured the first two, oh and Zinc as I has twisted her arm and guess what, that was mega low too. So who knows, until I get myself tested properly, what else I am deficient in... I did a hair mineral test recently and it said to avoid All sources of Calcium. But this is confusing for me as my Ca is so low and I have osteoporosis because of this. It is my Adjusted Ca that is on the higher side and shouldn't be. So am not sure why the mineral test showed high Ca (well, it was medium in the test but relative to my lowish Magnesium, also via hair sample, it was high I was told). But anyway, thanks again for the VitB download, I will look into this most certainly!

Hello good afternoon, I was wondering if anyone has ever brought their anti-allergy pills? I have been wanting to use their Cetirizine HCI 10mg. They are called HealthA2Z and distributed by Allegiant Health.I’m also Asthmatic and these allergies are terrible for me but I also want to be sure they don’t have any sort of gluten compound.    I have tried calling them but to no avail. Has anyone ever used them? If so, did you had any problems or no problems at all?    thank you
