So I bought some Udi's last night. The price has gone up to $7.41 a loaf. Canyon Bakehouse and Schar (the only other edible brands here) are even more.

 

I know I can get baking mixes but they are priced about the same and on top of that I would have to make them so there's no point.

 

I could buy flours seperately and make my own mix but again, the cost of the different flours is so high it would probably cost more in the long run.

 

I've been so enjoying the grilled cheese sandwiches but it looks like it's time to go back to using plain old rice as my staple and leaving bread as an occasional treat. :(

Gosh I hope it doesn't go up that much where I live. It is still under $5 here (just barely). It is hard to afford especially if you have a relatively low income. It would be nice if as demand goes up for gluten free bread the price goes down but oh well......

I saw at Costco today, two loaves of Canyon for under $8.  Don't kn ow if you have a membership, but that's the best price I've seen.  Almost $8 for one loaf is too much!!

There is a Walmart in Rapid City and their website says they have gluten-free. But I only venture up there about once a year. I might ask a friend who goes there more often if he can pick some up next time he goes.

 

I could order online I suppose but the only freezer I have is the little one on my refrigerator. I wouldn't be able to order enough to make the shipping cost worthwhile. I wanted to buy a small freezer for just this purpose but the electrical in my house is old knob and tube wiring.

I got some of the whatever brand at Aldi--shelf stable.  They have wheat and white for $3.99/loaf.  It's pretty good and nice that it is not frozen!

I did a rough cost analysis for the ingredients of my homemade recipe and my estimate was that my price per loaf for ingredients was $4.

^^^ When I last figured out my loaf it was about $2.75 a loaf with the Namaste all-purpose flour.  I tend to keep a loaf of the Aldi stuff in the freezer just in case we need a quick piece and I don't have a loaf ready.  Come to think of it, I should probably just freeze a pre-cut loaf that I make.

Gluten free bread is pretty easy to make anyway, because of the lack of having to knead the stuff. I bought a bread maker and found that I barely use it, because it's easy enough just to mix everything up by hand.

I guess the problem is my location. EVERYTHING is expensive here. A very small box of all-purpose gluten-free flour here is over ten bucks. It would only make one loaf. Bread mixes are the same.

 

I'll just enjoy the two loaves I bought and then go back to mixing things with rice. I have done that for my bacon egg and cheese "sandwiches" in the past. I melt a little butter and a lot of cheese over the rice, cook my eggs soft and mix them into the rice/cheese mixture, then crumble the bacon over it all. It's not as good as a real sandwich but it'll do.

 

One thing I can look forward to - a friend of mine always gives me a $50 gift certificate to the health food store for Christmas. That'll get me six loaves with a little left over for some Lara bars. (Which are $2 a piece here.)

:lol: Thanks, Cyclinglady, but no thanks. I have given up the ice cream. Sugar causes inflammation and my left wrist has been really sore for the past several weeks. It's getting better though because I haven't been eating sugar.

 

And you know, it feels good to be off sugar. Except when I was a very little kid I didn't ever like sweet stuff. Sure I would have ice cream sometimes, but you could offer me a candy bar a hundred times and I would always decline. I even remember how when I was a kid I would always ask if I could have my last pancake with just butter. It finally dawned on Mom and she asked, "You don't like maple syrup, do you?" I hung my head and whispered a quiet, "No", figuring I'd be in trouble because we were always expected to eat whatever was put in front of us. Imagine my relief when I found out that, unlike vegetables, i didn't HAVE to eat maple syrup anymore.

Welcome to the forum Monamae! Other than the health food store, the only store in my area that sells gluten-free foods is Lynn's Dakotamart. Stores like Safeway and Walmart and Target are a 120+ mile round trip for me.

 

But anyway, now that you're here, why don't you start a new thread and introduce yourself so eveyone else can welcome you too. :)

One way that I keep the cost of bread recipes down is by grinding the special types of flour myself wherever possible. Certified G.F. millet bought in bulk is way cheaper than millet flour. My Vitamix makes flour out of it in about 60 seconds, so it's really not time consuming to do.

Good for you! I was diagnosed with so diabetes which I am controlling by not eating sugar. I wish I had given it up sooner. I feel much better without it.

Yeah, if ordering in bulk from canyon (its $5/loaf if you order a case) isn't going to be an option without a big freezer, I would definitely say make your own.  I know bread recipes can be very diverse and there are mixes, too.  So ya just gotta have at it and do some experimentation!  May be worth investing in a good bread knife, etc, so you can get actual slices.

      I was not taking any medications previous to this. I was a healthy 49 yo with some mild stomach discomfort. I noticed the onset of tinnitus earlier this year and I had Covid at the end of June. My first ‘flare-up’ with these symptoms was in August and I was eating gluten like normal. I had another flare-up in September and then got an upper endo at the end of September that showed possible celiac. My blood test came a week later. While I didn’t stop eating gluten before I had the blood test, I had cut back on food and gluten both. I had a flare-up with this symptoms after one week of gluten free but wasn’t being crazy careful. Then I had another flare-up this week. I think it might have been caused by Trader Joe’s baked tofu which I didn’t realize had wheat. But I don’t know if these flare-ups are caused by gluten or if there’s something else going on. I am food journaling and tracking all symptoms. I have lost 7 pounds in the last 10 days.

      Welcome to the forum, @Hmart! There are other medical conditions besides celiac disease that can cause villous atrophy as well as some medications and for some people, the dairy protein casein. So, your question is a valid one. Especially in view of the fact that your antibody testing was negative, though there are also some seronegative celiacs. So, do you get reactions every time you consume gluten? If you were to purposely consume a slice of bread would you be certain to develop the symptoms you describe?

      I only went on the multi vitamin AFTER a couple of year of high dose, targeted supplementation resolved most of my deficiencies.  I was on quite a cocktail of vitamins that was changed every 6 months as my deficiencies resolved.  Those that were determined to be genetic are still addressed with specific doses of those vitamins, minerals and amino acids. I have an update on my husband and his A Fib.  He ended up in the hospital in August 2025 when his A Fib would not convert.  He took the maximum dose of Flecainide allowed within a 24 hour period.  It was a nightmare experience!  They took him into the ER immediately.  They put in a line, drew blood, did an EKG and chest Xray all within minutes.  Never saw another human for 6 hours.  Never got any results, but obviously we could see he was still in A fib by watching the monitor.  They have the family sign up for text alerts at the ER desk.  So glad I did.  That is the only way we found out that he was being admitted.  About an hour after that text someone came to take him to his room on an observation floor.  We were there two hours before we saw another human being and believe it or not that was by zoom on the TV in the room.  It was admissions wanting to know his vaccine status and confirming his insurance, which we provided at the ER desk.  They said someone would be in and finally a nurse arrived.  He was told a hospitalist was in charge of his case.  Finally the NP for the hospitalist showed up and my husband literally blew his stack.  He got so angry and yelled at this poor woman, but it was exactly what he needed to convert himself to sinus rhythm while she was there.  They got an EKG machine and confirmed it.  She told him that they wanted to keep him overnight and would do an echo in the morning and they were concerned about a wound on his leg and wanted to do a doppler to make sure he did not have a DVT.  He agreed.  The echo showed everything fine, just as it was at his annual check up in June and there was no DVT.  A cardiologist finally showed up to discharge him and after reviewing his history said the A Fib was due to the Amoxicillan prescribed for his leg wound.  It both triggers A Fib and prevents the Flecainide from working.  His conversion coincided with the last dose of antibiotic getting out of his system.  So, make sure your PCP understands what antibiotics you can or cannot take if susceptible to A Fib.  This cardiologist (not his regular) wanted him on Metoprolol 25 mg and Pradaxa.  My husband told him that his cardiologist axed the idea of a beta blocker because his heart rate is already low.  Sure enough, it dropped to 42 on the Metoprolol and my husband felt horrible.  The pradaxa gave him a full body rash!  He went back to his cardiologist for follow up and his BP was fine and heart rate in the mid 50's.  He also axed the Pradaxa since my husband has low platelets, bruises easily and gets bloody noses just from Fish Oil  He suggested he take Black Cumin Seed Oil for inflammation.  He discovered that by taking the Black Seed oil, he can eat carbs and not go into A Fib, since it does such a good job of reducing inflammation.   Oh and I forgot to say the hospital bill was over $26,000.  Houston Methodist!

      The symptoms that led to my diagnosis were stomach pain, diarrhea, nausea, body/nerve tingling and burning and chills. It went away after about four days but led me to a gastro who did an upper endo and found I had marsh 3b. I did the blood test for celiac and it came back negative.  I have gone gluten free. In week 1 I had a flare-up that was similar to my original symptoms. I got more careful/serious. Now at the end of week 2 I had another flare-up. These symptoms seem to get more intense. My questions:  1. How do I know if I have celiac and not something else? 2. Are these symptoms what others experience from gluten?  When I have a flare-up it’s completely debilitating. Can’t sleep, can’t eat, can’t move. Body just shakes. I have lost 10 pounds since going gluten free in the last two weeks.
