Do You Ever Miss The Stupid Things?

Do you ever miss the stupid things that have gluten in them?? I saw a commercial for those Little Debbie Christmas Tree snack cakes (the ones that are covered in that fake, waxy white chocolate) and I wanted one SOOO badly. They're not even that good! This was seriously the closest I've ever been to cheating on the gluten-free diet - I almost ran directly out to the grocery store and shoved the whole box of them in my face :(

Then, later that same day, I was thinking about Poptarts. Again I had the worst craving! I used to eat the brown sugar ones. But still, it's just a Poptart! There are much better things in life.

Sometimes I just think that I want these things because I KNOW I can't have them!

Sorry, I'm full of off-the-wall topics lately... anyone else out there miss the stupid things too?

- Lauren

I miss those Danish butter cookies that come out during the holidays. Don't know what they're called but they come in a round blue tin and have 2 layers of yummy cookies. I miss those. :(

Also, those round snowball type cookies and...oh yeah....hostess cupcakes and ding dongs and twinkies!!!

totally understand! somehow commercials have a greater effect on me now than they ever did...like ill see a commercial for some kind of cereal and have some intense desire for some of the cereal, despite the fact that i NEVER ate cereal before going gluten-free! To me it feels like its b/c i cant have it so i want it, even if its not something i generally like or crave. It's funny, I dont get that way when im wandering through a grocery store, but sometimes when i see people eating things i get jealous (and again, bizarrely, this happens most with cereal, which i dont really care for!)

There is a diner in Cherry Hill NJ not far from us that makes the BEST butter cookies. They make a ton of different varietes--all good. We would always go before a holiday and order a couple pounds of them--stand there and choose our favorites. I miss Ponzio's cookies :(

I think it's because those are the things that are hardest to replace, but seem so ubiquitous. I know it's hard. :-( Go make yourself some cookies? :-)

Yeah...thats how I felt. I had forgotten about them until I saw them in a Rite-Aid and I got all nostalgic about them. That was a few weeks ago and they're still on my mind.

do you ever dream you are eating those things? In the dream you know you are not supposed to and it is so good but even in the dream you can't pretend you don't have celiac disease. What's up with that? Can't even enjoy apple pie in your dreams!

I miss cafe mochas, cookies, my hazelnut and oat bread. Oh and Pizza from pizza hut!!

Actually I don't miss certain foods as much as I miss the convenience of just getting something on the go. Having to get up early and fix breakfast and packing a lunch when meeting friends for an outing is really one of the real downsides of this disease. I did enjoy the occasional twinkie with a cup of coffee before but being 55 years old when diagnosed seven months ago I guess I have had more than my share. Look at the bright side when the scouts or other organizations try to sell cookies and doughnuts on the street you can honestly decline without any guilty feelings. Personally I would trade all the pastries in the world for just one "cheap" gluten-free beer! Merry Christmas to all.

Rachel & Stefi - I had forgotten about those butter cookies, those were so good! I used to love those coconut snowballs too (the ones with the fluorescent pink coconut, chocolate cake and cream center, waaah I want one!)

jerseyangel - I'm only about 15-20 min from Cherry Hill!

pokerprincess - YES I have those dreams! I wake up in a cold sweat...

I think everyone is right that the reason I want these things so badly is that I know I can't have them. I have been wanting a jelly filled donut for about the past year. Before I was diagnosed with celiac disease, I ate a jelly donut MAYBE once a year - they were by no means a staple in my diet. But now that I know I can't have one (I've yet to see a gluten-free jelly donut), that's all I can think about!

OK, I'm through feeling sorry for myself! Glad to know I'm not the only one who does this though!

OMG...Don't get me started on jelly donuts! If I was picking out a dozen the jelly donuts ALWAYS got picked first. I ate them all the time and also the hostess powdered jelly donuts. Funny, I havent even thought about them once since starting the diet. Now...I'm missing those too! :(

Sheeesh...maybe I should stop reading this thread. ;)

Hey! I'm a girl guide and I sell cookies. I don't go door to door but we sell them in the mall once in a while - you're helping a good cause! For only four dollars! And you make the seller feel like they're doing a good job.

I sell them and I've never even tried them which I think is pretty funny! People ask me, "Well, how to they taste?" And I go, "Um, I'm not sure, I'm allergic to them, but everyone seems to like them!" Or something like that. Hahaha.

So why not buy a box and give it as a gift? We don't try to be annoying or just want your money, we just want to help with a fundraiser.

No hard feelings. :)

Well, I haven't had those dreams yet, but I bet I will at some point. I always seem to dream about things that are difficult for me.

I miss German Christmas cookies, I always bought them at Christmas time, and German Christmas cake, too. I didn't eat cookies very often, but I always ate them at this time of year.

I also miss my German rye bread, nothing can replace it. So, I don't even try. I always hated American bread, it's too fluffy. And gluten free breads are even worse (they taste like cardboard).

But I WILL have apple pie when we're going to my daughter's house in Ottawa for our family Christmas celebration, she is baking me a gluten free apple pie! Now that I've been off gluten for a while, I seem to be able to tolerate some things I couldn't just two months ago. So, some flour substitutes are okay once in a while. I am glad!

I also ate some potato the other day, and didn't have a reaction at all! And before October I'd have a bad gastrointestinal reaction by the next day.

Sorry Rachel, I'm a real downer!

That's it, my new mission in life is to create a gluten-free jelly donut!

(or maybe I can convince kinnikinnick to make one at least)

Yeah, I feel like that sometimes. I get cravings for things that I never even liked in the first place, or if I see someone eating something (again, something that I never even liked anyway) I just want it SO bad. I know I'm only wanting it because I can't have it.

I really really miss Krispy Kreme Donuts... to the point that I even wrote to the company and asked if they would consider making a line of gluten free donuts in a separate facility that they could sell to those of us who really want a gluten free Krispy Kreme... I grew up on Krispy Kreme's starting as a little kid going to the bakery early in the morning to get them hot off of the line...

here is their response!

I really miss girl scout cookies, especially the caramel and coconut ones. Sour patch kids. Hot dogs, even though I never liked them before diagnosis, have been sounding really good lately. And definetely Pop Tarts!

My boyfriend thinks I'm funny because when I go grocery shopping and I see something I like but can't have, I'll buy it for him (as long as I get to smell it first)

I'm not reacting to potates anymore either. It's great.

I miss those Danish butter cookies too. A tin gets delivered every year in December to my work. But, I miss my dad's baking the most and it makes me sad especially at this time of year.

mookie03 Contributor

I have always been an entenmanns girl myself. In fact, to say i was raised on entenmanns would be an understatement- my dad has consistently eaten an entenmann's chocolate donut every morning for breakfast and the choc chip creme filled cake for dessert EVERY night for as long as i can remember, and now everytime i go visit i get a little sad that i cant join him. but the absolute worst is when someone gives you an edible gift you cant eat... i have gotten so many! my friend sent me a cookie cake a few months ago and i must say, my roommate really enjoyed it! ;)

Now, this would be funny if it wasn't so sad  . They know you can't have their doughnuts, but want you to join their club? How stupid can people be, and self centered, too! Oh well, I guess you won't be eating any Krispy Kreme doughnuts in your lifetime. <_<

Lauren - Somewhere in here (I don't remember where) somebody posted a recipe for poptarts. Maybe you can find it.

LOL!!! I was wondering if anyone else would notice that!!! I had thought about editing that part of the letter out since it was irrelevant, but decided to leave it in just because it was so asinine!!!!

@klmgarland, My dermatitis herpetiformis didn't clear up until I became meticulous about cross contamination. I cut out gluten-free oats and all gluten-free foods, dairy and gluten-free rice. Additionally, getting the right amount of protein for my body weight helped significantly in my body's healing process ... along with supplementing with enough of all the vitamins and minerals ... especially Zinc and Magnesium. I went from 70kg to 82kg in a year. Protein with each meal 3 times daily, especially eggs at breakfast made the difference. I'm not sure whether iodine was a problem for me, but I can tolerate iodine no problem now. I'm off Dapsone and feel great. Not a sign of an itch. So there is hope. I'm not advocating for the use of Dapsone, but it can bring a huge amount of relief despite it's effect on red blood cells. The itch is so distracting and debilitating. I tried many times to get off it, it wasn't until I implemented the changes above and was consistent that I got off it. Dermatitis Herpetiformis is horrible, I wouldn't wish it on anyone.
    • klmgarland
Thank you so very much Scott.  Just having someone understand my situation is so very helpful.  If I have one more family member ask me how my little itchy skin thing is going and can't you just take a pill and it will go away and just a little bit of gluten can't hurt you!!!! I think I will scream!!

It is difficult to do the detective work of tracking down hidden sources of cross-contamination. The scenarios you described—the kiss, the dish towel, the toaster, the grandbaby's fingers—are all classic ways those with dermatitis herpetiformis might get glutened, and it's a brutal learning curve that the medical world rarely prepares you for. It is difficult to have to deal with such hyper-vigilance. The fact that you have made your entire home environment, from makeup to cleaners, gluten-free is a big achievement, but it's clear the external world and shared spaces remain a minefield. Considering Dapsone is a logical and often necessary step for many with DH to break the cycle of itching and allow the skin to heal while you continue your detective work; it is a powerful tool to give you back your quality of life and sleep. You are not failing; you are fighting an incredibly steep battle. For a more specific direction, connecting with a dedicated celiac support group (online or locally) can be invaluable, as members exchange the most current, real-world tips for avoiding cross-contamination that you simply won't find in a pamphlet. You have already done the hardest part by getting a correct diagnosis. Now, the community can help you navigate the rest. If you have DH you will likely also want to avoid iodine, which is common in seafoods and dairy products, as it can exacerbate symptoms in some people. This article may also be helpful as it offers various ways to relieve the itch:
    • Scott Adams
It's very frustrating to be dismissed by medical professionals, especially when you are the one living with the reality of your condition every day. Having to be your own advocate and "fight" for a doctor who will listen is an exhausting burden that no one should have to carry. While that 1998 brochure is a crucial piece of your personal history, it's infuriating that the medical system often requires more contemporary, formal documentation to take a condition seriously. It's a common and deeply unfair situation for those who were diagnosed decades ago, before current record-keeping and testing were standard. You are not alone in this struggle.
    • Scott Adams
Methylprednisolone is sometimes prescribed for significant inflammation of the stomach and intestines, particularly for conditions like Crohn's disease, certain types of severe colitis, or autoimmune-related gastrointestinal inflammation. As a corticosteroid, it works by powerfully and quickly suppressing the immune system's inflammatory response. For many people, it can be very effective at reducing inflammation and providing rapid relief from symptoms like pain, diarrhea, and bleeding, often serving as a short-term "rescue" treatment to bring a severe flare under control. However, experiences can vary, and its effectiveness depends heavily on the specific cause of the inflammation. It's also important to be aware that while it can work well, it comes with potential side effects, especially with longer-term use, so it's typically used for the shortest duration possible under close medical supervision. It's always best to discuss the potential benefits and risks specific to your situation with your gastroenterologist.
