Celestial Seasonings

Guest BERNESES

hi all- I just purchased some Celestial seasonings Lemon Zinger this week because Ii have a horrible cold. I drank it Monday and Tuesday and had some minor symptoms- night sweats, insomnia, a little nausea, but today I definitely feel like I have been glutened.

I just emailed them to see if their gluten-free teas (Lemon Zinger is gluten-free and marked on the label) are processed on the same equipment as their teas that do contain gluten (VERY FEW of them contain barley and barley malt, but some do). I haven't heard back but I want to see if anyone here has had a reaction to their gluten-free teas. Thanks, Beverly

Guest BERNESES

Thanks moongirl- I'm hoping it's not that either cuz I love, love love it!!!!!!

tarnalberry Community Regular

nope, and I drink their teas by the caseful! ;-)

hez Enthusiast

I drink their tea often and do not get sick. But I also can eat the nut thin crackers and I know they bother you Berneses. Could it possibly be part of your cold? I am sorry you are not feeling well.

Thanks everyone. Hez- I thought it might be part of my cold when it was just fatigue and night sweats but today I got the GI symptoms and the moodswings. I'm so bummed. Ironically, I felt really sick this summer and I was drinking it by the caseloads cuz I love it somuch. I haven't had it since the summer (I like cold beverages!) but when I got a cold it seemed so appealing. Darn!

Berneses: Are you allergic to ragweed or other "growing" things? If so, you might be having an allergic reaction to the tea. Keep in mind I am not celiac, my husband is, but I can't drink any herb tea due to my allergies. I get an immediate tummy ache and sometimes D when I drink herb teas.

Hello! I am super sensitive to the WORLD (haha, aren't we all), and I drink Celestial Seasonings like it's my religion - among my favourites, lemon zinger. I have never had a problem... Maybe you're just feeling dingy from your cold?

Either way, feel better. :)

Guest BERNESES

So bummed... just talked to Celestial Seasonings on the phone and their lines aren't dedicated so the teas with barley malt are produced on the same lines as the gluten free teas. Of course, like most places, they have an extensive cleaning process between batches but, well, I guess I hit it luck again! GRRRRRRRR

At least it was a fairly minor reaction. I haate to think of what would happen if I ever really ate gluten again.

I have been drinking Stash Teas. I really like them and all of their teas are gluten-free. :) I've noticed some regular grocery stores are now caring Stash Teas.

Thank you- that's great to know. Maybe I can have my tea and drink it too :D:D

And oh my gosh- their flavors look delicious!

I LOVE stash teas! I drank them even before I was gluten-free. Target carries them during the holidays as well.

I have also had a bad reaction to those teas. I posted before about it. I will link it here.

I called the company and I posted my findings here...

Perhaps we need to make our teas from fresh herbs like mint and etc... It only takes a minut and frankly it tastes better.

This is a little off topic but something I'd like to pass on to all of us here...

The last few days I've been calling around to drug companies to find gluten dairy soy corn free drugs. I was shocked when ROCHE told me they can NOT guarantee there drug with dies in them are not cross contaminated with gluten. She told me the companies they buy the dies from run the same lines that have gluten on them. So it really makes me wonder about quality control of things as simple as the teas in question. And yes they are to clean between products but we no longer live in the 'OLD AMERICA' before 2000 when life was different and the truth was told and people did their jobs with pride.

Your experience is both shocking and critically important for the community to hear, underscoring the terrifying reality that cross-contamination can extend into the most unexpected and invasive medical devices. It is absolutely devastating that you had to endure six months of sickness and ultimately sustain permanent vision loss because a doctor dismissed your legitimate, life-altering condition. Your relentless research and advocacy, from discovering the gluten in MMA acrylic to finding a compassionate prosthodontist, is a testament to your strength in a system that often fails celiac patients. While the scientific and medical consensus is that gluten cannot be absorbed through the skin or eyes (as the molecules are too large to pass through these barriers), your story highlights a terrifying gray area: what about a substance *permanently implanted inside the body*, where it could potentially shed microparticles or cause a localized immune reaction? Your powerful warning about acrylic lenses and the drastic difference with the silicone alternative is invaluable information. Thank you for sharing your harrowing journey and the specific, severe neurological symptoms you endure; it is a stark reminder that celiac is a systemic disease, and your advocacy is undoubtedly saving others from similar trauma.

Those are driving distance from me--I will try to check them out, thanks for sharing!

I am so sorry you're going through this bad experience--it's difficult when your own lived reality of cause and effect is dismissed by the very professionals meant to help you. You are absolutely right—your violent physical reactions are not "what you think," but undeniable data points, and it's a form of medical gaslighting to be told otherwise, especially when you have a positive HLA-DQ2 gene and a clear clinical picture. Since your current "celiac specialist" is not addressing the core issue or your related conditions like SIBO and chronic fatigue, it may be time for a strategic pivot. Instead of trying to "reprove" your celiac disease to unwilling ears, consider seeking out a new gastroenterologist or functional medicine doctor, and frame the conversation around managing the complications of a confirmed gluten-free diet for celiac disease. Go in and say, "I have celiac disease, am strictly gluten-free, but I am still suffering from these specific complications: SIBO, chronic fatigue, dermatological issues, and high blood pressure linked to pain. I need a partner to help me address these related conditions." This shifts the focus from a debate about your diagnosis to a collaborative plan for your current suffering, which is the help you truly need and deserve to work toward bouncing back.

Hello, no I had to have them re done and then used a liner over the top.  Many dentists are not aware of the celiac effects.  Best of luck.   There is other material, yet, very expensive.

He is not just a psychiatrist.  He is also a neuroscientist.  And yes, I have already read those studies.   I agree with benfotiamine.  This is short term while glutened/inflammation occurs.  As I had already mentioned, these symptoms no longer exist when this phase passes.  And yes, I know that celiac is a disease of malnutrition.  We are working with a naturopath.
