1st, . . . . .. . YAY!!

2nd, what brand is this?

Seems I could file it under "safest possible applesauce". Heehee

3rd, when I started having having normal morning BMs last month, I'd find there'd sometimes be an involuntary audible "yay" or "woohoo". It's not like there's anyone to talk to. And while it would be just a medium volume "yay", I'd have to laugh at it actually being said.

It's one thing to think it. Another to have no control over it being audible.

Soooooooo glad I wasn't out at a public restroom!!!

Imagine THAT!!

Tom-

Yeah my first question for rachel was what brand is this??????

And oh my god- when i ahve normal bowel movements i too let out the involuntary "yay" or "woohoo" (or something in the family of those comments) I have found myself even giving myself pep talks- its insane.

i really hope Lisa is ok- although its horrible that it got so bad i am glad it finally forced her to go to the hospital - she can't do it on her own - I am really relieved that she is going to see medical professionals . As much as I worry about doctors and their practices and limited knowledge, etc. I think there is a time when they are absolutley necessary. I think this is one of those times.

jerseyangel Proficient

Thank goodness Lisa went to the hospital. I wasn't on last night when she posted, and reading it this morning sent chills. Thanks for letting us know, Rachel. Hopefully they got her stabilized by now. Poor thing.

UR Groovy Explorer

I am praying for Lisa's return to health and strength.

Thank you Rachel for updating us last night. I've been thinking about her a lot.

Thanks Rachel for the update on Lisa...I'm so glad she went!

Here are the websites that I was talking about. They were originally posted on LN...I don't know if there is anything there to help, but maybe, so here they are:

Here is a health insurance message board: Open Original Shared Link

Dear Susie,

It looks like now we are going to have four people as Queens of Lazy! All of us will have sofas! Sven is our servant. He will get us drinks (your mojitos), and anything else we desire. We will take turns reigning in the jacuzzi, getting those nice hot stone massages, and relaxing on the sofa.

Let's see, we need another activity for us now that there are four. How about watching hot Hawaiian men play with fire? That sounds appropriate. It is difficult to get bored with that. I think that will suffice as our other duty.

Dear Judy,

It is good Lisa's mother and aunt went with her. She desperately needed to be hospitalized. Her electrolytes probably are extremely low. I hope she will be alright. I have been very concerned.

Dear Carla,

I get the jokes now! Thanks for putting the essential part of tom's post! The sofa thing totally confused me at first. I had not been on the Tickle Me Elbow Thread. Hopefully, I will get to check it out today!

That is exactly what happens to me! I stand up or stretch, and things start to black out. I cannot see at all! This can be scary! I know my BP was low when I went to the doctor a while back.

Your avatar is nice! You look so cute together! :) Adam seems to have a great sense of humor. The ringtone sounds funny! I would love to see his mug shot!

Dear tom,

You remember Emily! ;) I loved that! I miss SNL! It will never be as good as it was with the original cast! By the way, that character was based off of Gilda Radner's nanny growing up.

Yep, cold turkey Candida Diet is out! I am doing good though. You would be proud of me. Yesterday, I was in Wal-Mart, and saw the Jif display. I told myself no! Peanut butter is like crack, you cannot stop once you are on it! It's the mycotoxins, man!

A lot of dentists blame the patient like doctors do! I actually had a hygienist (sp?) accuse me of not brushing at all! I was so mad. In fact, I was plain insulted! That was like being called a liar on top of being called unclean! I am not unclean!

By the time you wrote that one post, I was already in Super Wal-Mart! Dad and I needed some stuff, and since I had never gotten to go in there, he took me. I got some make-up, some toys (my RSVP pens Pentel makes), and some mouthwash. I also got a couple of mangoes! Can you eat the peel? I have never eaten one before!

OMG! You know the word biznatch!? :o You are the only other person who knows that word I have ever met! A guy I went to high school with used to say it all the time! I did not like the guy, but that word was so funny! No one else I know has ever used it.

I hope Rinne is just on hiatus and not sick, either. The Candida dying could make trouble. She might do okay, though. Maybe she just got to go out to the country. Hopefully, she will post soon!

I always had the almond or cashew butter dry out something terrible if I dumped the oil out. Heating it in the microwave helped, but the consistency was still messed up and it was hot! Now that I have a Magic Bullet, I could probably resolve that. I could just remove it from the jar, put it in one of the Magic Bullet containers, and give it a whirl every time before I use it. That is my plan the next time I can afford some. :)

Whew! What a relief! I thought I was slipping! Don't scare me like that! I thought I had missed something when Nikki and Elye's posts were quoted and I did not see them. I really need to check out that thread!

You mentioned being concerned about having to get an extraction. Antibiotics are the norm for the infection. It is protocol. Most people who get Candida that have to take antibiotics must take an anti-fungal as a precaution. I think that is what Carla is on. I think Rachel also had to do that.

Dear Donna,

I agree that Lisa is in no shape to stay home. I got to that point before. It was terrifying. My body was shutting down. My parents knew it would only be a matter of time. I was down to 84 pounds by the time it was all said and done.

Money is way more important than other people know. You can always tell the people who have it, because they act like things just drop out of the sky! It is obvious they have always had money. Money really does involve everything. If I had money, most of my stress would be gone. Maybe you will be able to afford a cruise to Europe someday, and sooner than you think.

Treatment for anything seems extremely expensive. This is so frustrating. I wish things were more affordable. Even with good insurance, there is some out of pocket expense to a point. When your body is as messed up as ours, that can get to be a large number. At least you got to treat yourself to some nice nailpolishes!

The low BP is a problem. My adrenals are probably stressed. You are supposed to avoid strenuous exercise, trans fats, sugar, and caffeine and simple carbs when you have that trouble. I saw an article on how it makes people fat some time ago. I believe it, too! Adrenal Gland Burnout is pretty common.

Thank you for the health aid info. I am so glad you posted that! Laura had given me some info before. It is good to get as much help as possible. This is especially so when you have no insurance.

Dear Rachel,

Thank you for the update on Lisa! I was so worried. I got like that before. I did better for a while after being hospitalized. I think it is because my colon was cleaned out. Clearing the colon helps get rid of yeast.

Dear Lisa,

I know going to the hospital was the best thing for you right now. I got the way you are. That is the only option at that point. I recovered, though. I am sure you can. We just have to keep hoping.

I do not know about the amino acids contributing. That is difficult to say. Once your system is too out of whack, anything can set it off. I got that way before as well. Supplements, food, nothing set well.

The smell and taste thing is not unusual. I think many of us have experienced that. The mask might help, but sometimes our systems are so hypersensitive, it can cause sensory overload. This is overwhelming at times. Light, sound, taste, everything bothers me at times. It seems to be the norm for highly toxic people.

Dear Mia,

I agree that Lisa made the right decision. It is dangerous to be in that shape. You cannot last long like that. Something has to be done. Dehydration is bad enough. Other things tend to follow.

Money is a huge issue for me as well. If I had more, I would not have to be sick, depressed, and worrying so often. Money really does make the world go round. People who have it do not know what it is like to struggle the way we do. It is obvious they get things handed to them.

Dear Patti,

I am praying for Lisa as well. I would do a spell, but cannot do it now. The moon is void of course. You never want to do anything while that is going on. It will mess everything up.

Meanwhile, how are you doing? Have people been viewing the house lately? Did it go well? How are you handling it? I hope you are not too stressed out. I know the antibiotics can add to the trouble.

Dear Andrea,

I am glad you saw Rinne reading. She may not have had time to reply to everything. I do not know what she has been up to. Maybe she is getting more business for the Rinne Bars? She also might be attending a business workshop or something.

Bills suck. They prevent us from being able to enjoy even a simple pleasure. Everyone else gets to eat food because they are hungry. They do not worry how much they spend when they go to the store. I would be happy just to be financially comfortable enough to go to the store and buy the food I need and not worry how much it costs. My expectations are pretty simple!

Dear Kat,

Yes, now Susie must join us. We all shall lounge in sloth! All hail the Queens of Sloth and Laziness! Sven shall serve us loyally. All of our drinks, no matter what they are, are required to have one of those cute little umbrellas in them!

I have heard of ACE inhibitors. They tend to interact with a lot of medications. The low BP is a really hard thing to deal with. The salt has helped, though. In fact, you probably have the Neurally Mediated Hypotension. People tend to have normal or low blood pressure and have the symptoms we have had.

Dingoing is forgetting things completely. I think Susie invented this one! It has been in our vocabulary for a while now. Dingoing and dongoing are both about the same thing. Dongoing is on a larger scale, though.

Dear Bev,

Where are you? Is your herxing any better? I hope it is. We miss you! Please poop in!

Dear Charlie,

I saw you reading the other day. How are you doing? Are the herxing symptoms any better yet? I know you were having a difficult time of it the other week. The last you posted, you mentioned the ABX and some of the other stuff was bringing you down.

Dear Everybody,

The dentist appointment went well. I found out my one tooth could be filled with a regular filling. I might only need an extraction or a root canal on the other one. I need to get my wisdom teeth out, because that is what is causing the excruciating jaw pain and making my bite so off. They are coming through on the bottom, which explains the pain in my gums.

However, it looks like I got my mother's side of the family's teeth, and the rest are in good shape! The dentist wants me to check with my physician to see if I should do a root canal or extraction because of the Lyme infection being a possibility. Otherwise, things look good. What good news! Thank goodness I switched dentists! I might have ended up causing more harm than good!

Sincerely,

Jin

Treatment for anything seems extremely expensive. This is so frustrating. I wish things were more affordable. Even with good insurance, there is some out of pocket expense to a point.

We have insurance subsidized by the state for lower income families. We have to pay for all our treatments out of pocket as the doctors we see aren't in the "network". We keep the insurance for possible emergencies that will require hospitalization. Eventually as the boys can't be covered anymore, we'll have to pay a lot more or get kicked off. I've told Dr. E what I have available (on cc) and that we'll do what we can up to that point and then have to take a break til we can get some things paid down again.

Sounds like an overall good appointment. I'm glad things aren't as bad as you had thought, although anything with the teeth is a pain.

Is your dad's interview today?

Dear Andrea,

Wow, that government assistance does not always seem to help that much, does it? :( The out of pocket expense is the worst. I have seen many insurance plans where the deductible is so high, you are better off paying out of pocket! Some of those deductibles are up to $5,000! :o Talk about absurd!

It was a big sigh of relief yesterday after the appointment. I went to Wal-Mart afterwards. We were in there an hour and a half! It was exciting for me. What was funny is there were those little Kleenex tissues hanging from the freezer doors where the waffles were. Maybe they put them there for Celiacs so we could blot our eyes and blow our noses after crying when we saw what all we cannot eat!? It is like "I used to be able to eat that", *sniff*

You are right. Dad should be in Louisville about now. He left pretty early. I hope the interview goes well. He has heard some bad stuff about this guy being about the numbers as well. He wants to see how much they allow AutoDesk to dictate their activities. Dad does not want to end up in the same situation he did last time.

I have a new avatar. I got all dolled up yesterday. It sucks having to take your own pic. I did pretty good considering! What do you think?

Sincerely,

I got a jury summons! This is NOT happy news, lol. They seem to LOVE me there. I've been seated on a jury once already, and have had to report in person a couple of other times. <_< Anyway, it was for the week of my LLMD appointment, so I just had to call to reschedule it...at least now it's sooner...I go in a couple of weeks instead of waiting til the end of the month. Couldn't take a chance on making it for the following week just in case I get on a jury.

Must start planning food issues NOW, lol.

Jin - when you say regular filling, are you talking about amalgam or composite filling?

Jin, I've changed my avatar temporarily so you can get a little fix. The pic's a little fuzzy, but, I can tell you that it was quite a show.

As far as where we'll reign as queens, the Insta-Spa will have to do as my throne for now, but there's room for 2.

I've contacted a holistic dentist group down here, but they haven't returned my call yet. I'm having a setback as far as the money, so I'm pretty messed up about the whole thing. Somebody in my extended family has put us in a really crummy position with the dollars.

I'm totally motivated to do this correctly now. You've all convinced me that I shouldn't mess around with this. Hopefully, they'll get back to me soon, and the money thing will be fixed - by the bonehead that caused the $7,000 problem.

New quit date for the smoking: August 2. Hubby's pushing the issue. I don't think there's much of a choice anymore.

Dear Donna,

AAACCCKKKK!!!! :o Not jury duty! That is sucky! My mother just got a summons, too! It figures they would schedule it when you had an appointment with your LLMD! Thank goodness you were able to reschedule it. It is wise to prepare for the food issues now.

I am talking about a composite. I told him "No metal!" That stuff is not going in my mouth. There are no holistic dentists around here that I know of. We barely have dentists at all.

Dear Kat,

Thanks for the pic! That is a nice looking fellow there! :) Look at those muscles! Aloha oy!;) Attractive men and fire are extra hot together! Keep him up there a bit!

I am glad you took the first step with the holistic dental group. If they do not call back soon, call them. Sometimes things get mixed up. We do not seem to have any here. Regular dentists are hard to find here, despite the fact our city is not that small.

Sincerely,

Jin

P.S. I see you Patti!

P.S.S. Hi Mango and Julie! How are you?

Mia,

The applesauce I'm eating is Ela Family Farms Organic....2 flavors....Gala and Jonathon...I do fine with both.

I dont know why this brand is ok for me though??

The only thing I can think of is that all the other brands seem to say "made with ripe organic apples...triple washed"

I'm interpreting it like this.. "made with bruised and overripe moldy organic apples"

The Ela Farms only says "Organic gala apples" or "Organic Jonathon apples".....nothing about "ripe" and nothing about "triple washed".

NoGluGirl Contributor

Dear Rachel,

ROFLMAO! That is about the way it is. Ripe means moldy! They typically do not think of it the way we do! I have some mangoes I am anxious to eat. I hope you can eat the peel.

Jury duty! I got summoned once when I was 3 hours away....at college. I obviously couldn't go.....then my mom got called. I had to go during the last few years I was working. Sat in on a trial but the parties came to an agreement so it was over after lunch break. I've been called two other times. Young children and being a stay at home mom helped me get out of those.

The funny thing is the last time I was called, we were living where we are now....In Cowlitz County and I got a summons from Thurston County....where we'd lived 2 years prior. :o:lol: Aside from being a stay at home mom I told them it would create even more of a financial hardship if I had to travel all the way up there........about 1 hours drive one way. I don't know why I got summoned when we'd changed our address with the DOL.

I've been summoned entirely too many times, but thankfully only had to be on duty once.

New quit date for the smoking: August 2. Hubby's pushing the issue. I don't think there's much of a choice anymore.

You can do it! :D

Hope you can get your teeth done soon too.

Nope, no peels on these.......not that I remember anyway. Seems my hubby always would eat them without but I forget.......I may be getting them confused with papayas.

Rachel--24 Collaborator

I'm not feeling too happy today. :(

I've been having major conflicts at work....with my boss. Its just mainly been over the past week but its sucking the life out of me....SHE is sucking the LIFE out of me!

Heck...I'm not even feeling excited about my appt. tomorrow!! :(

There were arguements last week...and then again yesterday. Today I feel drained...kinda "weepy" actually....so yeah...I think its starting to get to me. <_<

We never had any problems getting along (well one episode but it wasnt work related) until last week and now I just dread going to work.

I told her yesterday I dont trust her anymore...I dont believe anything she says...basically called her a LIAR without actually saying it. Thats how I feel...and also I feel like everything that goes wrong lately.....shes taking it out on me....even if its her OWN fault.

AND....on top of *everything* else...yesterday she was telling me she wants me to work on the WEEKENDS!!

OMG....I am soooooo over all the drama!!!

Sorry....I just needed to vent.

AndreaB Contributor
Heck...I'm not even feeling excited about my appt. tomorrow!! :(

Awwww Rachel. :( I'm sorry about the stress at work. That is not good.

I only kept the above part of the quote because it sounds like what happens when you get more toxic. With all the cookies you've been having, along with the stress at work......it's not a good thing. I would tend to believe that the cookies increased your intolerance level again and then the work situation has made things worse.

UR Groovy Explorer

Donna,

Bummer about the jury duty. Doesn't sound like very good timing - but, then, it never is.

Rachel,

Sorry you're having these issues with your work and your boss. Sounds like it may not be having a great affect on you. She sounds very sucubus-like.

Jin,

Nice Picture

-------------------------------------------------

Well, I've made my appointment. It's August 16 (2 weeks after my "quit" date). Now I'm committed. It looks like they use all the correct procedures - oxygen, evacuator, rubber dam, nutritional support recommendations, precautions regarding the water supply and proper disposal, etc. I just talked to the gal for like 20 minutes about it. It'll be full exam, x-rays, and cleaning (cleaning only if I can get pre-med antibiotics and a release from my doctor). She's recommending that I take chlorella. Any tips on that? I've never taken it before, but I'll look more into it. I've seen some stuff on it, but never committed any info to memory.

She brought up candida. I'm beginning to think that I may have a lot of problems that I never knew about before Rachelville. One thing that I have to do that maybe is a little different is that I have to take a slam of antibiotics and auth from my nephrologist before and after the cleaning and any procedures.. This isn't new - I had to do this for my last cleaning too. Anyway, HERE WE GO !

NoGluGirl Contributor

Dear Andrea,

I think you are thinking about papayas! They also have to be halved to get the seeds out of the middle. Hey, at least you tried! You still attempted to give useful input! :D I saw this one fruit I had never heard of before. I need to go back and check it out!

The jury duty thing is so funny! My mother may have to go, I do not know yet. I am laughing thinking about when Dad had jury duty. This was a couple of years back. They were bored and were all in this room. One lady saw the chalkboard and said "Maybe we could play hangman?" "Or, maybe that is not a good idea?"

I am glad you like the avatar. I hope you could tell I was smiling. I did not know if you could or not. You know how when you shrink pics what that does. Electronics are so weird!

Dear Rachel,

I am so sorry everything at work is bothering you. :( Those conflicts can really hurt you emotionally. I have to say that I agree with Andrea. You might be getting toxic from the cookies. Sugar messes a lot of things up.

Maybe you could limit your intake and see if that helps? I found I get more emotionally upset when I have low blood sugar. We could detox together! Even so, it does sound like things have been brewing at work for a while. Hopefully, things will improve. Do not feel bad about venting, because we are all here for you like you have been there for us! HUGS!

Also, I agree with Kat. It sounds like your boss has vampiric tendencies. You can protect yourself from this. They literally do feed off of your emotional and spiritual energy and often antagonize you to feed off of you! These people are often evil. Some are vampiric unwillingly, but many are well aware of what they are doing.

Dear Kat,

Thank you for the compliment on my avatar! I took like I do not know how many pics. I flipped the camera every which way! Finally, one turned up decent. It took forever!

Way to go on getting your appointment! It sounds like you are all set! We are pulling for you!

I do not know so much about chlorella. Carla could probably help there! I am sure you can quit smoking, too!

It would not be surprising if you have Candida. I know I have it. If your tongue is always white, that is one good sign right there. Other things like strange rashes that pop up out of nowhere then disappear also tend to accompany Candida. The intestinal overgrowth of it makes it systemic, and terribly difficult to eradicate until a strict diet and sometimes integrative therapies for bad cases must be followed.

Sincerely,

Jin

My tongue always has a white coating (except for when I did the elimination diet and was eating only veggies, brown rice, and chicken - and a little fruit).

Now I have to think about candida? What the heck? I'm starting to feel like I do belong in Rachelville. I guess I'll have to start looking into a candida diet now ! Too much for my little tiny brain to grasp. I default to the best advice I was ever given: One thing at a time - one day at a time - one problem at a time .

P.S. Oh mee-o-my-o such a flurry of activity this morning.

Taking care of the metals in your mouth should help with the candida. Another thing that contributes to candida are birth control pills (don't know if that's an issue). Of course, quitting smoking should help your immune system immesely.

It'd be good to do the anti-candida diet as your are taking care of these issues ... I tend to agree with Tom ... white tongue, how can it not be candida?

Do you take probiotics?

Okay, monthly phone consult is in five minutes. :)

So, essentially all of the nutrition in the food we eat is absorbed through the villous lining of the small bowel. This is the section of the intestinal track that is damaged by celiac disease. This villous lining is composed of billions of finger-like projections that create a huge amount of surface area for absorbing nutrients. For the celiac person, when gluten is consumed, it triggers an autoimmune reaction in this area which, of course, generates inflammation. The antibodies connected with this inflammation is what the celiac blood tests are designed to detect but this inflammation, over time, wears down the finger-like projections of the villous lining. Of course, when this proceeds for an extended period of time, greatly reduces the absorption efficiency of the villous lining and often results in many and various nutrient deficiency-related health issues. Classic examples would be osteoporosis and iron deficiency. But there are many more. Low D3 levels is a well-known celiac-caused nutritional deficiency. So is low B12. All the B vitamins in fact. Magnesium, zinc, etc.  Celiac disease can also cause liver inflammation. You mention elevated ALP levels. Elevated liver enzymes over a period of 13 years was what led to my celiac diagnosis. Within three months of going gluten free my liver enzymes normalized. I had elevated AST and ALT. The development of sensitivities to other food proteins is very common in the celiac population. Most common cross reactive foods are dairy and oats but eggs, soy and corn are also relatively common offenders. Lactose intolerance is also common in the celiac population because of damage to the SB lining.  Eggs when they are scrambled or fried give me a gut ache. But when I poach them, they do not. The steam and heat of poaching causes a hydrolysis process that alters the protein in the egg. They don't bother me in baked goods either so I assume the same process is at work. I bought a plastic poacher on Amazon to make poaching very easy. All this to say that many of the issues you describe could be caused by celiac disease.

thank you so much for your detailed and extremely helpful reply!! I can say with absolute certainty that the less gluten containing products I've eaten over the past several years, the better I've felt.   I wasn't avoiding gluten, I was avoiding refined grains (and most processed foods) as well as anything that made me feel bad when I ate it. It's the same reason I gave up dairy and eggs- they make me feel ill.  I do have a bit of a sugar addiction lol so a lot of times I wasn't sure if it was the refined grains that I was eating - or the sugar. So from time to time I might have a cookie or something but I've learned how to make wonderful cookies and golden brownies with BEANS!! and no refined sugar - I use date paste instead. Pizza made me so ill- but I thought it was probably the cheese. I gave up pizza and haven't missed it. the one time I tried a slice I felt so bad I knew I'd never touch it again. I stopped eating wheat pasta at least 3 yrs ago- just didn't feel well after eating it. I tried chick pea pasta and a few others and discovered I like the brown rice pasta. I still don't eat a lot of pasta but it's nice for a change when I want something easy. TBH over the years I've wondered sometimes if I might be gluten intolerant but really believed it was not possible for me to have celiac disease. NOW I need to know for sure- because I'm in the middle of a long process of trying to find out why I have a high parathyroid level (NOT the thyroid- but rather the 4 glands that control the calcium balance in your body) I have had a hard time getting my vit D level up, my serum calcium has run on the low side of normal for many years... and now I am losing calcium from my bones and excreting it in my urine (some sort of renal calcium leak) Also have a high ALP since 2014. And now rapidly worsening bone density.  I still do not have a firm diagnosis. Could be secondary HPT (but secondary to what? we need to know) It could be early primary HPT. I am spilling calcium in my urine but is that caused by the high parathyroid hormone or is it the reason my PTH is high>? there are multiple feedback loops for this condition.    so I will keep eating the bread and some wheat germ that does not seem to bother me too much (it hasn't got enough gluten to use just wheat germ)    but I'm curious- if you don't have a strong reaction to a product- like me and wheat germ- does that mean it's ok to eat or is it still causing harm even if you don't have any obvious symptoms? I guess what you are saying about silent celiac makes it likely that you can have no symptoms and still have the harm... but geez! you'd think they'd come up with a way to test for this that didn't require you to consume something that makes you sick! I worry about the complications I've been reading about- different kinds of cancers etc. also wondering- are there degrees of celiac disease?  is there any correlation between symptoms and the amnt of damage to your intestines? I also need a firm diagnosis because I have an identical twin sister ... so if I have celiac, she has it too- or at least the genetic make up for having it. I did have a VERY major stress to my body in 2014-2016 time frame .. lost 50lbs in a short period of time and had severe symptoms from acute protracted withdrawal off an SSRI drug (that I'd been given an unethically high dose of, by a dr who has since lost his license)  Going off the drug was a good thing and in many ways my health improved dramatically- just losing 50lbs was helpful but I also went  off almost a dozen different medications, totally changed my diet and have been doing pretty well except for the past 3-4 yrs when the symptoms related to the parathyroid issue cropped up. It is likely that I had low vit D for some time and that caused me a lot of symptoms. The endo now tells me that low vit D can be caused by celiac disease so I need to know for sure! thank you for all that great and useful information!!!

Welcome, @catnapt! The most recent guidelines are the daily consumption of a minimum of 10g of gluten (about the amount found in 4-6 slices of wheat bread) for a minimum of two weeks. But if possible stretching that out even more would enhance the chances of getting valid test results. These guidelines are for those who have been eating gluten free for a significant amount of time. It's called the "gluten challenge".  Yes, you can develop celiac disease at any stage of life. There is a genetic component but also a stress trigger that is needed to activate the celiac genes. About 30-40% of the general population possesses the genetic potential to develop celiac disease but only about 1% of the general population actually develop celiac disease. For most with the potential, the triggering stress event doesn't happen. It can be many things but often it is a viral infection. Having said that, it is also the case that many, many people who eventually are diagnosed with celiac disease probably experienced the actual onset years before. Many celiacs are of the "silent" type, meaning that symptoms are largely missing or very minor and get overlooked until damage to the small bowel lining becomes advanced or they develop iron deficiency anemia or some other medical problem associated with celiac disease. Many, many are never diagnosed or are diagnosed later in life because they did not experience classic symptoms. And many physicians are only looking for classic symptoms. We now know that there are over 200 symptoms/medical problems associated with celiac disease but many docs are only looking for things like boating, gas, diarrhea. I certainly understand your concerns about not wanting to damage your body by taking on a gluten challenge. Your other option is to totally commit to gluten free eating and see if your symptoms improve. It can take two years or more for complete healing of the small bowel lining once going gluten free but usually people experience significant improvement well before then. If their is significant improvement in your symptoms when going seriously gluten free, then you likely have your answer. You would either have celiac disease or NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity).

after several years of issues with a para-gland issue, my endo has decided it's a good idea for me to be tested for celiac disease. I am 70 yrs old and stunned to learn that you can get celiac this late in life. I have just gradually stopped eating most foods that contain gluten over the past several years- they just make me feel ill- although I attributed it to other things like bread spiking blood sugar- or to the things I ate *with* the bread or crackers etc   I went to a party in Nov and ate a LOT of a vegan roast made with vital wheat gluten- as well as stuffing, rolls and pie crust... and OMG I was so sick! the pain, the bloating, the gas, the nausea... I didn't think it would ever end (but it did) and I was ready to go the ER but it finally subsided.   I mentioned this to my endo and now she wants me to be tested for celiac after 2 weeks of being on gluten foods. She has kind of flip flopped on how much gluten I should eat, telling me that if the symptoms are severe I can stop. I am eating 2-3 thin slices of bread per day (or english muffins) and wow- it does make me feel awful. But not as bad as when I ate that massive amnt of vital wheat gluten. so I will continue on if I have to... but what bothers me is - if it IS celiac, it seems stupid for lack of a better word, to intentionally cause more damage to my body... but I am also worried, on the other hand, that this is not a long enough challenge to make the blood work results valid.   can you give me any insight into this please?   thank you

The biopsy looks for damage to the mucosal lining of the small bowel from the inflammation caused by celiac disease when gluten is ingested. Once you remove gluten from the diet, inflammation subsides and the mucosal lining begins to heal.
