Thanks, Andrea.

Donna, I hope your back gets feeling better soon.

Sorry it's not a good day, Rinne.

Carla,

Hello, I was wondering how long can I use the oregano oil at a time for? I used it for almost 3 weeks, and I stopped because I was glutened, and I got really sick from it. I couldn't imagine putting anything in my stomach because I was so nauseous. I thought that I remembered seeing somewhere to use it for 15 days, then stop for 15. Also, how long did it take until you noticed a difference? I feel now that I've stopped since last Wednesday, my symptoms are worse than ever  I'd really like to start taking it again, but not sure if I should. Thanks, Janet

I don't know. I have been taking it continually, but I get my liver enzymes checked monthly. I don't remember how quickly I saw results, it seemed like it wasn't more than a couple weeks. I was also taking Uva Ursi and Plant Tannins along with Theralac, Ultra Flora, and VSL#3.

I ran out of a few of those, but didn't worry about it since things were still good. Things are as bad as ever again, but I think that's due to treating the Bartonella, which can cause GI symptoms.

I hope you feel better soon.

Not a great day, kind of tired.

Sorry you're not having a great day. Do what you need to do, even if it means sleeping lots. Is this from the oxalates you think?

I like your new picture. :)

Tom,

The point I was trying to make about titanium is that there are *some* people who do react to it. Some people are allergic to that metal. Those of us who have immune systems that are in a hyperactive state have to be aware of these things.

Thats why when we get our amalgams out they do compatibility testing before putting new materials into the patients mouth....to make sure the materials used are *safe* for that individual.

I can find hundreds of articles saying that soy has multiple health benefits. Does that mean that its true for YOU??

If someone can find out how they will react to something BEFORE they put it into their body...it might actually save them from problems down the road. Being aware can never hurt...being unaware can have devastating effects. I'm sure you can relate to that.

Titanium allergy. Although titanium is considered a biocompatible metal, around 5% of patients will show a positive reaction to titanium. Studies show that titanium allergic patient will improve after removal of titanium-containing implants.

Its less than 5% of the population that develops Celiac Disease....but does that make it any less devastating for those individuals who do have it??

Before and after pictures of a person with titanium allergy can be seen here:

CarlaB, how are you finding the VSL#3 to be? I just ordered some -- it hasn't come yet.

How long have you been taking it and anything good or bad to say about it?

Rachel? You're not actually personally offended that there are good things to say about titanium, are you?

I must be misreading your tone.

I *am* curious about what site claims 5% of the population is allergic to the most inert metal in common use.

Could you give me the url please?

Rachel? You're not actually personally offended that there are good things to say about titanium, are you?

Why would I be personally offended?? I have no reason to be concerned about titanium for myself. I'm just passing on info.

I can see that you feel titanium is 100% safe for everyone....but if your mother had been one of the 5% that react....would you still feel the same??

As far as I know there isnt *anything* thats completely tolerated by everyone.

The chances are slim (5%) that someone is reacting to titanium but its certainly not unheard of. I would assume people who are sick and reacting to MANY things (that they were previously non-reactive to) can also become sensitive to titanium. Why not titanium??

How many people here have become sensitive to all kinds of metals in jewelry since becoming sick?? We've had this discussion a few times and as I recall it was most (if not all) of us.

Anyways...I'm not sure why you question that people can be allergic to titanium but here is the link.

Just because something is considered non-toxic does not mean that someone cannot be allergic to it.

Strawberries are non-toxic yet plenty of people are allergic to them.

So now somehow I'm accused of saying something is 100% safe for everyone?

This feels familiar.

I can't discuss a topic w/ someone who'll attribute fabricated opinions to me.

5% is a WILDLY over-exaggerated number, btw.

Melisa.org is the site for a foundation of companies that DO THE TEST!

That makes their "data"/opinion no more valid than what the titanium producers' hacks would spew. (Which I would never quote)

Sure they say "There are studies . . . .. " but don't link to any, or mention who did the "studies", or provide even the slightest detail. Maybe the only studies that support their contention are their own internal studies.

It's not hard to "prove" something when you've already decided what the conclusion will be.

Melisa.org has a link to a list of hazardous substances (both elements and compounds & including many metals) and titanium isn't even on the list, tho it has ~260 entries.

Hey all-

Donna-

so sorry you are having a rough time . I feel you on the heating pad- My hot water water bottle is my best friend!!!!!!!!! I hope you are feeling better today. Its so great that the people at your church are so supportive that must be really nice to have.

Rachel-

thanks for the advice on the eggs. It reminds me of how i am with rice. I react to brown rice but i can handle white rice because it has been stripped of its nutrients which is bad for most people but good for me i guess. And yes when the women did the testing she tested me for dosage as well. Its crazy that if she put too much or too little of something my arm would not hold but than for the right amount i could hold my arm.

This is gonna be a long week i have alot of appts. as usual. I am very anxious to see how i will so on these new meds i am trying to go slowly but i just want to start all of them. So frustarting trying to be patient.

Hi Mia :)

So nice to see you posting. I had been off-line most of the weekend so I'm not completely all caught up here yet. I hope that your treatments are progressing nicely.

I'm the same way with the rice. Brown rice upsets my stomach, but the white is fine.

5% is a WILDLY over-exaggerated number, btw.

And you know this how?? Is it because you've studied allergy to titanium in the past and have aquired diferent results?? It sounds like you are making an assumption but do you have anything to back up the claim that the number is exaggerated??

Melisa.org has a link to a list of hazardous substances (both elements and compounds & including many metals) and titanium isn't even on the list, tho it has ~260 entries.

Never did I say that Titanium is hazardous or toxic.....all the info was posted from their site...which clearly says that titanium is non-toxic...but 5% are allergic to it. So why would it be listed with hazardous substances??

Let's just move on. Kassandra needn't add titanium to her list of worries.

My post on titanium was to Ami....I dont beleive I ever posted anything to Kassandra regarding her situation. But since you mention it....can you guarantee with 100% certainty that she or anyone else here would not be allergic to it??

Until you can I dont think you can make those assumptions.

I know that personally...I could never begin to make assumptions as to what a persons body might tolerate or not tolerate. I think it would be very irresponsible of me to make statements about what a person needs to worry about or not worry about with regards to their own health. I simply pass on info that may be helpful.

I'm certainly glad your mother did not have any problems but that doesnt mean that you can say that Kassandra or anyone else shouldnt think of the possibility.

I know that being sick has made me more aware than ever of how important it is to be proactive and aware and extra cautious when it comes to my health. I would want to know if it were me.

Thanks everyone, my back is a bit better today. I'm glad I went in for treatment yesterday though. My back was definitely out of alignment. He said my left side was definitely higher than the right (by the way, he checks this every time he sees me, so it isn't normally higher, lol). The chiropractor adjusted me, then the PT worked on the muscle for 30 minutes. They put me in traction for 10 minutes then put ice on it for another 10 minutes. The doc said to keep icing it. I can use heat, but need to follow it up with ice. They don't want me to do any strength work until this clears up.

I brought a couple of ice packs to work, since sitting seems to be the most uncomfortable...I've iced it this morning and so far it's not bad. I still can't bend or stoop well, but mostly it's better. I see the PT/doc again tomorrow.

Donna, I'm glad your back is on the mend.

Agreed---like the new picture, Carla!!! How is the bart treatment going?

Thank you. It's rough. I'm not back to where I was this summer yet. I'm getting around okay yesterday and today, so that's a big improvement, but I'd like to be better than I am.

CarlaB, how are you finding the VSL#3 to be? I just ordered some -- it hasn't come yet.

How long have you been taking it and anything good or bad to say about it?

I've been taking it off and on. The bad thing is the price!!! That's why when I run out I don't reorder ... but I really need to reorder as the diarrhea is back ... not necessarily because of the VSL#3, it could be because of treating another aspect of my Lyme Disease.

If you have candida, you might want to start out REALLY slow. I didn't have any problems with it at all, but you could if you have candida overgrowth. Maybe start with half a packet and see how you do, then increase to a whole packet. It's potent stuff.

Are you under a doctor's supervision with this?

Flor Apprentice

No doctor's supervision with the VSL3 -- just trying it out.

Though I am working on getting a first appointment with a wholistic MD in Ashveville who has some experience with chronic gut problems.

I just bought two small boxes of the stuff and will take it slow.

Am also doing the LOD, calcium citrate, glutamine, biotin, zinc, fish oil, MSM and a multi-vitamin.

Will keep you posted!

We took the info on titanium to have in mind if things don't clear up for Mitch. I doubt that it's a probelm for him and would suspect the scar if anything around his knee is troublesome.

Just like the low oxalate diet. I'm skimming posts on the other thread. I don't believe I have a probelm with them but will keep it in mind. I like keeping things in mind to be a possible help to others I may run across........just need to keep everything straight. Lately I haven't felt like processing all the info which is why I've been skimming posts.

I do hope the pain and discomfort is alleviated soon.

Mia- Good to see you post! Please keep us posted about all your appts this week, I am anxious to hear everything.

Regarding the titanium issue, thanks Rachel for the info on reacting to titanium as a possibility for Ami's symptoms. It sounds like it very well could be a possibility for her with all she describes she's experiencing.

Tom, and I don't speak for anyone else, but I understand Rachel's concern for someone like Kassandra, whose system is clearly compromised, not taking the possibility of reacting to titanium lightly.

What concerns me more is Kassandra is only 17, no? I am surprised this type of surgery is recommended to someone so young......

Rinne, I am also very interested in the info about the scars, I was not on the ball when Rachel first posted and didn't get it copied over, this means we must go back to fetch it... Scary!

My brain has been working over time and the oxalate issue confuses me, is a low-oxalate diet something you have to stay on indefinitely?? Rachel with your added info that aspergillus is connected, would it mean that someone sensitive to oxalates is actually reacting because they have an aspergillus problem and then once they clear it up the oxalates in foods are no longer an issue??

Rachel with your added info that aspergillus is connected, would it mean that someone sensitive to oxalates is actually reacting because they have an aspergillus problem and then once they clear it up the oxalates in foods are no longer an issue??

Julie....to me it seems like its a diet to manage the symptoms. I would imagine you'd have to stay on it indefinately. I'm assuming that without addressing the underlying issues the symptoms would return if the foods were added back in.

I'm not sure if there are any people that have resumed a normal diet...after going on the LOD for awhile. I havent heard anything about it resolving the health issues completely.

It seems like its related to the fungi/metal/dysbiosis/leakygut issues. So I imagine until those things are taken care of LOD makes us feel better.

I dont think its just related to aspergillus specifically....candida produces oxalates as well. I think its a fungal thing.

As we know the yeast/molds bind with metals. The yeast isnt really going far with the metals still in the body. It can be brought down with diet/treatment but the problem remains and as soon as we stray from the diet...its gonna come right back.

In mercury toxic people the yeast is there wherever the mercury is. They are bound. Oxalates seem to surround the yeast and have some ability to bind with metals as well. All of the toxins tend to accumulate together so I imagine the oxalates are contributing to that toxic overload.

Probably the worse the metal situation...the worse the fungal issues....and the worse the fungal issues...the worse the oxaltes problem becomes.

Thats my guess.

I do believe that if theres an infection...whether its candida, aspergillus, both, or something else entirely... treatment of those underlying issues should allow healing and the resolution of the food problems.

The biggest problem is the heavy metals though....because if those are the reason for the infections....nothing is gonna resolve until the metals are removed. Its my understanding that mercury is one of the biggest reasons for allergies and food intolerance. Most people seem to get over these things when they get rid of the mercury as well as the infections. Then they are back to eating a normal diet....or close to it.

Hello everyone,

Carla,

Love the hair - looks great.

Donna,

Been watching - hope you're feeling better every day.

Well,

Wish me luck. Tomorrow - 2 amalgams are going away - safely, I hope. Glad I came across you guys. I trust that this guy knows what he's doing. I saw all the equipment last time I was there. I've cut down the smoking substantially and have been bulking up on anti-oxidant foods - also been taking Chlorella.

Anyway, take care of yourselves

Adding to previous post.

BTW,

after my trip I have decided that I MUST get in to see a holistic practitioner or LLMD or something. Need to do some homework and find someone with a good rep. I'm really looking forward to this. Curious about the candida thing and what might be done for that in my case.

Take care

k

That's my hope. I don't know if you remember that T had come up with aspergillus in her first ASYRA. That cleared with her fungal LED. All of us have problems with mercury and various fungal/yeast issues. Dr. E didn't put us on an anti-candida diet so the supplements together must be designed to handle everything.

So, essentially all of the nutrition in the food we eat is absorbed through the villous lining of the small bowel. This is the section of the intestinal track that is damaged by celiac disease. This villous lining is composed of billions of finger-like projections that create a huge amount of surface area for absorbing nutrients. For the celiac person, when gluten is consumed, it triggers an autoimmune reaction in this area which, of course, generates inflammation. The antibodies connected with this inflammation is what the celiac blood tests are designed to detect but this inflammation, over time, wears down the finger-like projections of the villous lining. Of course, when this proceeds for an extended period of time, greatly reduces the absorption efficiency of the villous lining and often results in many and various nutrient deficiency-related health issues. Classic examples would be osteoporosis and iron deficiency. But there are many more. Low D3 levels is a well-known celiac-caused nutritional deficiency. So is low B12. All the B vitamins in fact. Magnesium, zinc, etc.  Celiac disease can also cause liver inflammation. You mention elevated ALP levels. Elevated liver enzymes over a period of 13 years was what led to my celiac diagnosis. Within three months of going gluten free my liver enzymes normalized. I had elevated AST and ALT. The development of sensitivities to other food proteins is very common in the celiac population. Most common cross reactive foods are dairy and oats but eggs, soy and corn are also relatively common offenders. Lactose intolerance is also common in the celiac population because of damage to the SB lining.  Eggs when they are scrambled or fried give me a gut ache. But when I poach them, they do not. The steam and heat of poaching causes a hydrolysis process that alters the protein in the egg. They don't bother me in baked goods either so I assume the same process is at work. I bought a plastic poacher on Amazon to make poaching very easy. All this to say that many of the issues you describe could be caused by celiac disease.

thank you so much for your detailed and extremely helpful reply!! I can say with absolute certainty that the less gluten containing products I've eaten over the past several years, the better I've felt.   I wasn't avoiding gluten, I was avoiding refined grains (and most processed foods) as well as anything that made me feel bad when I ate it. It's the same reason I gave up dairy and eggs- they make me feel ill.  I do have a bit of a sugar addiction lol so a lot of times I wasn't sure if it was the refined grains that I was eating - or the sugar. So from time to time I might have a cookie or something but I've learned how to make wonderful cookies and golden brownies with BEANS!! and no refined sugar - I use date paste instead. Pizza made me so ill- but I thought it was probably the cheese. I gave up pizza and haven't missed it. the one time I tried a slice I felt so bad I knew I'd never touch it again. I stopped eating wheat pasta at least 3 yrs ago- just didn't feel well after eating it. I tried chick pea pasta and a few others and discovered I like the brown rice pasta. I still don't eat a lot of pasta but it's nice for a change when I want something easy. TBH over the years I've wondered sometimes if I might be gluten intolerant but really believed it was not possible for me to have celiac disease. NOW I need to know for sure- because I'm in the middle of a long process of trying to find out why I have a high parathyroid level (NOT the thyroid- but rather the 4 glands that control the calcium balance in your body) I have had a hard time getting my vit D level up, my serum calcium has run on the low side of normal for many years... and now I am losing calcium from my bones and excreting it in my urine (some sort of renal calcium leak) Also have a high ALP since 2014. And now rapidly worsening bone density.  I still do not have a firm diagnosis. Could be secondary HPT (but secondary to what? we need to know) It could be early primary HPT. I am spilling calcium in my urine but is that caused by the high parathyroid hormone or is it the reason my PTH is high>? there are multiple feedback loops for this condition.    so I will keep eating the bread and some wheat germ that does not seem to bother me too much (it hasn't got enough gluten to use just wheat germ)    but I'm curious- if you don't have a strong reaction to a product- like me and wheat germ- does that mean it's ok to eat or is it still causing harm even if you don't have any obvious symptoms? I guess what you are saying about silent celiac makes it likely that you can have no symptoms and still have the harm... but geez! you'd think they'd come up with a way to test for this that didn't require you to consume something that makes you sick! I worry about the complications I've been reading about- different kinds of cancers etc. also wondering- are there degrees of celiac disease?  is there any correlation between symptoms and the amnt of damage to your intestines? I also need a firm diagnosis because I have an identical twin sister ... so if I have celiac, she has it too- or at least the genetic make up for having it. I did have a VERY major stress to my body in 2014-2016 time frame .. lost 50lbs in a short period of time and had severe symptoms from acute protracted withdrawal off an SSRI drug (that I'd been given an unethically high dose of, by a dr who has since lost his license)  Going off the drug was a good thing and in many ways my health improved dramatically- just losing 50lbs was helpful but I also went  off almost a dozen different medications, totally changed my diet and have been doing pretty well except for the past 3-4 yrs when the symptoms related to the parathyroid issue cropped up. It is likely that I had low vit D for some time and that caused me a lot of symptoms. The endo now tells me that low vit D can be caused by celiac disease so I need to know for sure! thank you for all that great and useful information!!!

Welcome, @catnapt! The most recent guidelines are the daily consumption of a minimum of 10g of gluten (about the amount found in 4-6 slices of wheat bread) for a minimum of two weeks. But if possible stretching that out even more would enhance the chances of getting valid test results. These guidelines are for those who have been eating gluten free for a significant amount of time. It's called the "gluten challenge".  Yes, you can develop celiac disease at any stage of life. There is a genetic component but also a stress trigger that is needed to activate the celiac genes. About 30-40% of the general population possesses the genetic potential to develop celiac disease but only about 1% of the general population actually develop celiac disease. For most with the potential, the triggering stress event doesn't happen. It can be many things but often it is a viral infection. Having said that, it is also the case that many, many people who eventually are diagnosed with celiac disease probably experienced the actual onset years before. Many celiacs are of the "silent" type, meaning that symptoms are largely missing or very minor and get overlooked until damage to the small bowel lining becomes advanced or they develop iron deficiency anemia or some other medical problem associated with celiac disease. Many, many are never diagnosed or are diagnosed later in life because they did not experience classic symptoms. And many physicians are only looking for classic symptoms. We now know that there are over 200 symptoms/medical problems associated with celiac disease but many docs are only looking for things like boating, gas, diarrhea. I certainly understand your concerns about not wanting to damage your body by taking on a gluten challenge. Your other option is to totally commit to gluten free eating and see if your symptoms improve. It can take two years or more for complete healing of the small bowel lining once going gluten free but usually people experience significant improvement well before then. If their is significant improvement in your symptoms when going seriously gluten free, then you likely have your answer. You would either have celiac disease or NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity).

after several years of issues with a para-gland issue, my endo has decided it's a good idea for me to be tested for celiac disease. I am 70 yrs old and stunned to learn that you can get celiac this late in life. I have just gradually stopped eating most foods that contain gluten over the past several years- they just make me feel ill- although I attributed it to other things like bread spiking blood sugar- or to the things I ate *with* the bread or crackers etc   I went to a party in Nov and ate a LOT of a vegan roast made with vital wheat gluten- as well as stuffing, rolls and pie crust... and OMG I was so sick! the pain, the bloating, the gas, the nausea... I didn't think it would ever end (but it did) and I was ready to go the ER but it finally subsided.   I mentioned this to my endo and now she wants me to be tested for celiac after 2 weeks of being on gluten foods. She has kind of flip flopped on how much gluten I should eat, telling me that if the symptoms are severe I can stop. I am eating 2-3 thin slices of bread per day (or english muffins) and wow- it does make me feel awful. But not as bad as when I ate that massive amnt of vital wheat gluten. so I will continue on if I have to... but what bothers me is - if it IS celiac, it seems stupid for lack of a better word, to intentionally cause more damage to my body... but I am also worried, on the other hand, that this is not a long enough challenge to make the blood work results valid.   can you give me any insight into this please?   thank you

The biopsy looks for damage to the mucosal lining of the small bowel from the inflammation caused by celiac disease when gluten is ingested. Once you remove gluten from the diet, inflammation subsides and the mucosal lining begins to heal.
