Hi Cheryl!!

Donna- I bet you were a handful! Patti- I bet you were a saint!

I don't know, if you ask my my she'll say I was a good kid, but I think I had my moments. Cute pic of you in your dance costume!

Ok...I got 2 new pics up.

My avatar is from when I was 3 and my personal pic is me and my brother. I'm 5 and he's 4. :)

OMGosh, another cute pic! Great one of you and your brother too.

I don't have any of me and my siblings...they were mostly gone by the time I remember anything, lol. I don't think we HAVE any photos of me with any of them as a child...well there MAY be one of me and my sister (the one who lives in Yosemite).

Okay, I'm just about to load a picture that does indeed prove that I DID smile as a child. Donna =

Turns out he and his "business partner" were tending their marijuana crop in the Ventana wilderness. And then he would SELL the plants. Um, he was a yurt-dwelling drug dealer. That's right. Well anywho, the wild pigs ate all his weed that year. Strangely, he was probably the nicest man I knew the entire seven years (i.e. "The Lost Years" in Susan's dating life  ) I lived in that debauched place.

:lol::lol::lol:

Interupting again, BUT....only Susan could come out with a sentence like that!!!!!!!!

(and what is a YURT??)

Speaking of which, if you go to the Tickle Me Elbow thread Nikki-UK had to get glasses and she wrote "Well, blow me if I didn't need new specs!" I almost died laughing. Only in Britain can you say that and not  get looked at like a pervert.

OOopps, yes, I can see that sentence might have a certain 'double entendre' about it

..and oh my , the avatars just get better & better!!!!

Horses and tutus and Donna has WHEELS for feet !!

Hi everyone,

I love looking at all the wonderful pictures.

I just want you to know I am very proud of Rachel and all her hard work researching and finding doctors to help her thru this rough period in her life. I have noticed much imporvement since her first months of staying with us. Nightmare!! To say the least.

AND if it wasn't for all of you, I don't think Rachel could be this strong, focused, and determined to get herself all the way healthy.

You are all a wonderful group of people and I am sure glad she found you as part of her family.

Hi Donna .................... You are almost a next door neighbor, and one day we will surely get to meet you.

I wish all of you the best. You are Rachel's extended family here.

Yes, you look EXOTIC silly! You have that beautiful dark hair, eyes and skin. I was thinking Spanish. Shall we call you Penelope Cruz? Rachel Cruz? I've got it! Racquel 24!!!!!!!!!!

Rachel Cruz :lol: When I saw that it reminded me of something funny. When me and my ex first got together apparantly my ex didnt even know my name!!! I think I got a card or something that said "To my love R.C."

Ummm...ok but my initials are actually R.M.

Sooo..I was like "What does the R.C. stand for??"

Then there was just this awkward moment where my ex seemed to be thinking really hard...and obviously realized those werent my initials...and then finally replied "Ummm...R.C. means Really Cute." :D

ROFL.. :lol::lol::lol:

It was really funny later on but at that exact moment I dont think I was all that amused.

Lots of people have called me Raquel...some people at work will call me either Raquel or Rachel. I'll repond to either of those name but never Rachelle. :P

I dont speak Spanish which gets me in trouble alot at work. Theres alot of hispanic customers and everyday I get approached by people who are speaking to me in Spanish. I dont understand so I answer "No Hablo Espanol" and I get these kind of looks <_<:huh:...and then they complain about me because they assume I'm lying and just not wanting to stop what I'm doing to help them.

I do wanna learn though...my Dad speaks spanish but I never learned it. :(

Speaking of which, if you go to the Tickle Me Elbow thread Nikki-UK had to get glasses and she wrote "Well, blow me if I didn't need new specs!"

:lol::lol:

OMG...that is hysterical!!!!!

New avatar. First dance recital- I think I was 4.

Very cute Bev!!! :)

Beverly, you are so funny, too! It's so good to have you and Susan back!

Ditto to that!!! :D

And the things it does to my brain! I can tell a herx is coming by how mean I get! My son said to me recently that I'm reasonable with mistakes the kids make, but then sometimes they'll do something that is really nothing and I'll get so terribly mad about it! And it's true ... that's the first sign a herx is coming -- weepy and irritable.

I read somewhere recently (cant remember where) that when a person has Babs they tend to be very moody...up and down with emotions...the mood can change on a dime. Then people who have just Lyme...with no Babs...tend to stay more depressed but not so up and down.

I dont know if its true or not...I think it was a Dr. stating what he'd noticed with treating Lyme patients for alot of years.

I guess if its true than I most definately have Babesia...FOR SURE!!

Okay, I'm just about to load a picture that does indeed prove that I DID smile as a child. Donna =

Cant wait to see it!! :D

I don't know, if you ask my my she'll say I was a good kid, but I think I had my moments.

My mom has always said I was a good kid...I was an angel till I got older... then I became a mom's worst nightmare as a teenager.

She says I've been nothing but problems ever since....and then I had to go and get poisoned. :P

Yeah, and "mood swings" is way too nice a description ... I believe someone on LN said it was more like a "mood chainsaw"!

I get the depression, too. Adam can always tell if I've tried to cut down on the St. John's Wort, but as long as I'm taking it, I'm fine.

I am generally not moody, it happens mostly when I herx. I KNOW I'm being moody and unreasonable, but I can't control it. Sometimes Adam will just grab me and hold me no matter what I've just said to him realizing that I didn't mean it and that I'm really very ill.

I do speak Spanish. I spent a summer in Mexico on a summer program with IU and got the opposite reaction. I had light blonde hair halfway down my back. My boyfriend had dark hair, and so did my roommate. Both of them were taking 100/200 level Spanish .... I was taking 300/400 level and was almost fluent. If someone tried to talk to us, they would always look at my bf if I was with him, or my roommate if I was with her. No matter how many times I was the one to answer, they'd still look at them ....even if I was translating to them!

One time on the subway a lady was talking about me and my hair to her daughter. I started giggling (I was 19  ), and I heard her say that she thought I understood them!

Then, I was managing an apt. complex, but I always told the maintenance supervisor if there was a maintenance issue. I didn't think that the maintenance staff needed two bosses. One day the owner of the property was coming over and I gave one of the staff directions in Spanish on how I wanted the pool straightened. The maids came running in my office when they found out ... they were horrified because they used to clean my office and talk in Spanish thinking I didn't understand!

Recently, someone called our house and started talking in Spanish ... I answered back, in perfect Spanish -- "No one here speaks Spanish!" I was thinking "No one here speaks Spanish as their native language," but only realized what I said didn't make sense until after the guy on the other end was totally confused! I sound Mexican ...

These sound really good. Unfortunately for us, banana's don't like us. Also I'm assuming the chocolate has soy lecithin in it.

I'll be looking for your update when you feel up to posting it.

I don't have any pain or anything with the uterus. Wouldn't fibroids cause pain?

It is possible to have them without soy but the bananas no, I am working on another one though that might work.

Rinne- I'm so excited for you and your bars!!!!!!!!!! Ddo they taste like banana? Or just like dairy? They sound so good!

......

<-------------------------------------- New avatar. First dance recital- I think I was 4.

The banana flavour blends with the almond and chocolate, you get all the flavours at once.

Bev, that photo of you is so precious.

Yeah, and "mood swings" is way too nice a description ... I believe someone on LN said it was more like a "mood chainsaw"!

 Yes, this USED to describe me but then I went through a more even keel period...now I'm getting back to the mood chainsaw thing. It especially comes out when I'm driving. But the other day I was nearly in tears while I was getting my massage at physical therapy...the therapist kept asking if he was hurting me, and I just kept saying no. Don't know why I was so emotional either. I told Dr. S about this too. :)

so she didnt mean to look shocked.

I don't know shocked seems to fit this thread sometimes.

Okay, about to load a new picture on my personal picture page...it's of my first dog Coco. She was a great dog too...got her when she was 8 weeks old...loved her personality too.

Mood chainsaw? Good God- that IS me. Now i am Beverly from Beverly with the nicknmae babs and I MUST have babesia. I am cursed! And my name comes from Old English for "girl from the beaver meadow" I think my name is now cursed. I told my mom I didn't like it but she thought it was lovely. I always wanted to be Emma (that's what DH calls me as my nickname).

Carla- I think "blow me" in Brit-speak must be like "blow me away".

rachel- You're RC story is so funny!

I speak a "'little Spanish". When we went to Costa Rica for our honeymoon, I practiced before and by the end of the trip (2 weeks) I was doing pretty well. But I was making one MAJOR mistake. In costa Rica they have these cute little restaurant names- cafes were called "soda"'. Well- one kind of restaurant is called a cocina (nicer than a soda) BUT the last time I spoke a word like that was in Italy where they are called "cucinas" (pronounced Koo-cheen-as). So i kept saying "Donde esta Cucina talamanca?" Turns out uhm....cucina in Italy is kitchen but in Spanish it's "dirty woman" so I'm sure many people wondered why I was wandering around my honeymoon lookig for a good cucina  . Finally, a very nice elderly gentleman corrected me.:lol: OOPS!

SusieQ- Your yurt story is PRICELESS!

And Rachel- your mom is on here- that's so cool! Hi Cheryl! Your children are beautiful!

I don't speak Spanish either, lol. And, the same sort of thing happens to me as to Rachel...people think I look like I do. Once a friend (who is Guatemalan, but can understand Spanish) and I went to a mexican restaurant. The waitress talked to my friend in Spanish, then came to me and out came this so very "white" order, lol. She looked at me like <_< and asked my friend why I wouldn't order in Spanish, lol. My friend had to tell her how hopeless I am at "foreign" languages, lol. I even took SIX years of Spanish in school and still can't put a sentence together.

Fibroids and iodine deficiency, has anyone heard of this?

No, but I wouldn't be surprised if there are a lot of things that contribute.

In the picture, I had just had my hair done by Larry. Women all over town wanted Larry to do their hair, but my mom could call that day and he'd squeeze me in! I still have a picture he gave me for my birthday. This was my mom's favorite way for me to wear it, but I preferred "flip up".

Just be sure you yell out, "God bless that JERK!"

I absolutely love all the new-old pictures!! :D Carla, Bev, Rachel, Rinne, Donna, Laura--everyone! Rachel, I love seeing the one of you and your brother--so cute.

Glad you stopped by, Cheryl--I agree that "our girl" is incredibly focused and determined. ;)

Rinne--Those bars really sound good! I'll be waiting to hear all about everything. :) I've not heard anything about a link between fibroids and iodine--although it could contribute. I did a lot of reading about endometriosis, though, and found that it is being thought more and more that it is autoimmune. I thought that very interesting. Somehow, this stuff is all related.

Andrea--the adeno. is nothing to worry about unless it causes you symptoms. I knew that you had had the sections, so I wanted to mention it to you. I literally never heard of it until my 6 week check up after the hysterectomy. Doctors had been saying for several years that my uterus was larger than normal, but no one ever mentioned edeno. It made sense to me too since my second son was a c-section. I did have severe cramping/bleeding/clots. etc, but they chalked it up to the fibroid. I only found out after that I also had the edeno. and endometriosis, too! :o

I wanted to post my new pic on my profile page and leave the baby pic up as my avatar. For some reason, no matter what I did, the board wouldn't accept my pic on my page--only as an avatar.....I'm going to take it down for a while cuz I want to have the old pic up like everyone else  I just got so frustrated, I said the heck with it and left it for a while.

Nikki--that "blow me" is hysterical! Nice to see you here--stick around :D

"Mood chainsaw"--I can relate.....

Welcome to the forum, @suek54, I have Dermatitis Herpetiformis, too.  I found taking Niacin B3 very helpful in clearing my skin from blisters as well as improving the itchies-without-rash (peripheral neuropathy).  Niacin has been used since the 1950's to improve dermatitis herpetiformis.   I try to balance my iodine intake (which will cause flairs) with Selenium which improves thyroid function.   Interesting Reading: Dermatitis herpetiformis effectively treated with heparin, tetracycline and nicotinamide https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/10844495/   Experience with selenium used to recover adrenocortical function in patients taking glucocorticosteroids long https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/24437222/   Two Cases of Dermatitis Herpetiformis Successfully Treated with Tetracycline and Niacinamide https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30390734/   Steroid-Resistant Rash With Neuropsychiatric Deterioration and Weight Loss: A Modern-Day Case of Pellagra https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC12532421/#:~:text=Figure 2.,(right panel) upper limbs.&text=The distribution of the rash, patient's substantial response to treatment.   Nicotinic acid therapy of dermatitis herpetiformis (1950) https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/15412276/

Thank you all for your advice and the dermatitis herpetiformis article. The latter made me realise I had stopped taking my antihistamine, which I will restart today. The Dapsone has cleared the rash entirely but I still get quite a bit itching, absolutely nothing to see though. I know its notoriously hard to clear and its still relatively early days for me.  The iodine issue is very interesting. I do eat quite a bit of salt because I have Addison's disease and sodium retention is an issue. I also have autoimmune hypothyroidism, not sure how a low iodine diet would play into that? Because of my Addison's I am totally steroid dependent, I take steroids 4 x daily and cannot mount any defence against inflammation. I need to increase my meds for that. Now that I know what is wrong I can do just that if Im having a bad day. Life is very sweet, just so damn complicated sometimes! Hey ho, onwards. Thank you again for your advice.

So, essentially all of the nutrition in the food we eat is absorbed through the villous lining of the small bowel. This is the section of the intestinal track that is damaged by celiac disease. This villous lining is composed of billions of finger-like projections that create a huge amount of surface area for absorbing nutrients. For the celiac person, when gluten is consumed, it triggers an autoimmune reaction in this area which, of course, generates inflammation. The antibodies connected with this inflammation is what the celiac blood tests are designed to detect but this inflammation, over time, wears down the finger-like projections of the villous lining. Of course, when this proceeds for an extended period of time, greatly reduces the absorption efficiency of the villous lining and often results in many and various nutrient deficiency-related health issues. Classic examples would be osteoporosis and iron deficiency. But there are many more. Low D3 levels is a well-known celiac-caused nutritional deficiency. So is low B12. All the B vitamins in fact. Magnesium, zinc, etc.  Celiac disease can also cause liver inflammation. You mention elevated ALP levels. Elevated liver enzymes over a period of 13 years was what led to my celiac diagnosis. Within three months of going gluten free my liver enzymes normalized. I had elevated AST and ALT. The development of sensitivities to other food proteins is very common in the celiac population. Most common cross reactive foods are dairy and oats but eggs, soy and corn are also relatively common offenders. Lactose intolerance is also common in the celiac population because of damage to the SB lining.  Eggs when they are scrambled or fried give me a gut ache. But when I poach them, they do not. The steam and heat of poaching causes a hydrolysis process that alters the protein in the egg. They don't bother me in baked goods either so I assume the same process is at work. I bought a plastic poacher on Amazon to make poaching very easy. All this to say that many of the issues you describe could be caused by celiac disease.

thank you so much for your detailed and extremely helpful reply!! I can say with absolute certainty that the less gluten containing products I've eaten over the past several years, the better I've felt.   I wasn't avoiding gluten, I was avoiding refined grains (and most processed foods) as well as anything that made me feel bad when I ate it. It's the same reason I gave up dairy and eggs- they make me feel ill.  I do have a bit of a sugar addiction lol so a lot of times I wasn't sure if it was the refined grains that I was eating - or the sugar. So from time to time I might have a cookie or something but I've learned how to make wonderful cookies and golden brownies with BEANS!! and no refined sugar - I use date paste instead. Pizza made me so ill- but I thought it was probably the cheese. I gave up pizza and haven't missed it. the one time I tried a slice I felt so bad I knew I'd never touch it again. I stopped eating wheat pasta at least 3 yrs ago- just didn't feel well after eating it. I tried chick pea pasta and a few others and discovered I like the brown rice pasta. I still don't eat a lot of pasta but it's nice for a change when I want something easy. TBH over the years I've wondered sometimes if I might be gluten intolerant but really believed it was not possible for me to have celiac disease. NOW I need to know for sure- because I'm in the middle of a long process of trying to find out why I have a high parathyroid level (NOT the thyroid- but rather the 4 glands that control the calcium balance in your body) I have had a hard time getting my vit D level up, my serum calcium has run on the low side of normal for many years... and now I am losing calcium from my bones and excreting it in my urine (some sort of renal calcium leak) Also have a high ALP since 2014. And now rapidly worsening bone density.  I still do not have a firm diagnosis. Could be secondary HPT (but secondary to what? we need to know) It could be early primary HPT. I am spilling calcium in my urine but is that caused by the high parathyroid hormone or is it the reason my PTH is high>? there are multiple feedback loops for this condition.    so I will keep eating the bread and some wheat germ that does not seem to bother me too much (it hasn't got enough gluten to use just wheat germ)    but I'm curious- if you don't have a strong reaction to a product- like me and wheat germ- does that mean it's ok to eat or is it still causing harm even if you don't have any obvious symptoms? I guess what you are saying about silent celiac makes it likely that you can have no symptoms and still have the harm... but geez! you'd think they'd come up with a way to test for this that didn't require you to consume something that makes you sick! I worry about the complications I've been reading about- different kinds of cancers etc. also wondering- are there degrees of celiac disease?  is there any correlation between symptoms and the amnt of damage to your intestines? I also need a firm diagnosis because I have an identical twin sister ... so if I have celiac, she has it too- or at least the genetic make up for having it. I did have a VERY major stress to my body in 2014-2016 time frame .. lost 50lbs in a short period of time and had severe symptoms from acute protracted withdrawal off an SSRI drug (that I'd been given an unethically high dose of, by a dr who has since lost his license)  Going off the drug was a good thing and in many ways my health improved dramatically- just losing 50lbs was helpful but I also went  off almost a dozen different medications, totally changed my diet and have been doing pretty well except for the past 3-4 yrs when the symptoms related to the parathyroid issue cropped up. It is likely that I had low vit D for some time and that caused me a lot of symptoms. The endo now tells me that low vit D can be caused by celiac disease so I need to know for sure! thank you for all that great and useful information!!!

Welcome, @catnapt! The most recent guidelines are the daily consumption of a minimum of 10g of gluten (about the amount found in 4-6 slices of wheat bread) for a minimum of two weeks. But if possible stretching that out even more would enhance the chances of getting valid test results. These guidelines are for those who have been eating gluten free for a significant amount of time. It's called the "gluten challenge".  Yes, you can develop celiac disease at any stage of life. There is a genetic component but also a stress trigger that is needed to activate the celiac genes. About 30-40% of the general population possesses the genetic potential to develop celiac disease but only about 1% of the general population actually develop celiac disease. For most with the potential, the triggering stress event doesn't happen. It can be many things but often it is a viral infection. Having said that, it is also the case that many, many people who eventually are diagnosed with celiac disease probably experienced the actual onset years before. Many celiacs are of the "silent" type, meaning that symptoms are largely missing or very minor and get overlooked until damage to the small bowel lining becomes advanced or they develop iron deficiency anemia or some other medical problem associated with celiac disease. Many, many are never diagnosed or are diagnosed later in life because they did not experience classic symptoms. And many physicians are only looking for classic symptoms. We now know that there are over 200 symptoms/medical problems associated with celiac disease but many docs are only looking for things like boating, gas, diarrhea. I certainly understand your concerns about not wanting to damage your body by taking on a gluten challenge. Your other option is to totally commit to gluten free eating and see if your symptoms improve. It can take two years or more for complete healing of the small bowel lining once going gluten free but usually people experience significant improvement well before then. If their is significant improvement in your symptoms when going seriously gluten free, then you likely have your answer. You would either have celiac disease or NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity).
