Okay guys, every time I drink Propel I get stomach cramps similar to the old Celiac cramps that I got pre-diagnosis. This also happens when I drink Red Bull. Is it possible that I'm allergic to one of the vitamins? Can that even happen? I've narrowed the cramps down to these two specific beverages. I don't want to give them up if I don't have to. Oh, I also get stomach pains from multi-vitamins. Ugh... Any input would be appreciated.

Yeah, that's really synthetic stuff. I got one of those from the gym once and just couldn't drink it.

I prefer plain water, but I get dehydrated really easily and Propel helps me so much. I prefer it over the sugary Gatorade. I don't have any problem with it, so I would guess, given that you have the same problems with vitamins, that it's the vitamins in it.

I love propel and have never had a problem with it...grape is the best flavor!

LOL :lol: I meant the lemon one. I was thinking something worse than sunscreen. Didn't know it came in grape. :)

I like the berry or strawberry/kiwi. I don't like cherry anything -- too much cherry cough syrup when I was little! Never tried the lemon, doesn't sound good to me, which is funny because I like lemon squeezed in my water. Don't care much for grape flavored stuff so I've never tried that either.

Is it possible that I'm allergic to one of the vitamins? . . . Oh, I also get stomach pains from multi-vitamins. Ugh... Any input would be appreciated.

WOW. I thought I was the only one! I've tried multi-vits, calcium mix and B complex vits, all gluten free but it's no use. I don't know what it is. I can't eat yogurt either w/o the same doubling over pain. I'm not lactose intolerent. Very weird. :unsure:

My grandmother turned bright orange after taking too much niacin but I don't think it's the same thing. :P

I've never had any problems with it and I drink the berry flavor all the time.

I get sick to my stomach from normal Dasani and Aquafina (not even the flavoured kind, although I have never tried them). Those are fortified, too.

I believe Aquafina is just pure water purified with reverse osmosis, but Dasani has minerals added back in for flavor and is available in other flavors. They don't have the vitamins in them that the Propel does or the electrolytes.

I wonder why they give you an upset stomach?

I have no idea, but have since stayed away. Everytime I have re-tried it - sick again. I don't understand it either! :)

Must be something in the bottling or purification process ... Starbucks water is purified by ro, too, does it bother you? I never buy Starbucks bottled water because just a regular cup is purified.

My husband gets headaches from Evian.

Funny that water would bother people.

I almost bought some last week but when I read the ingredients it looked like it might have aspartame in it. I think that tastes terrible and it is bad for you. LindaLee

Thanks everyone. I thought I was nuts for getting stomach cramps from drinking water, but I guess there are others with the same problem. Regular water doesn't give me a problem, but fortified water is hard on my system. I do have to say though, the more I drink it, the lesser the cramps get. Do you guys think I'm hurting my body by drinking it or was I just having a mild reaction to a new substance?

Good question. Maybe your body is getting used to the vitamins in it. I prefer just the plain water -- I drink the Propel when I'm glutened or having bad dehydration. I prefer to get my vitamins from food or good vitamins from the health food store, so if you don't need it, I'd just drink plain water and get better quality vitamins elsewhere -- unless you are drinking it for the taste.

Propel has a lot of artificial ingredients in it. Fortified water can be fortified with stuff that isn't natural, so if it makes you sick, you might as well avoid it. I think this might be one of those things that bothers lots of people, but most gluten eaters who are less in tune to these types of things just don't really notice.

How about decaf ice tea?

Or squeeze a lemon in your water.

I sometimes pour a little Acai or Pomegranate juice in my water for taste.

I can't drink tap water, tastes too yucky. I like ro water and have a purifier in my house, so I drink lots of water now.

You can flavor spring water with lemon. Sliced oranges in water tastes great too (it just gives it a hint of flavor). For something even better, add sliced oranges and sliced cucumbers. Chill the pitcher overnight. It's much more flavorful and easier to drink if you don't like water, but this way you're avoiding the artificial stuff in the no-calorie drinks, and getting some sort of health benefit.

      Hello, @Jordan Carlson, So glad you're feeling better.   Tecta is a proton pump inhibitor.  PPI's also interfere with the production of the intrinsic factor needed to absorb Vitamin B12.  Increasing the amount of B12 you supplement has helped overcome the lack of intrinsic factor needed to absorb B12. Proton pump inhibitors also reduce the production of digestive juices (stomach acids).  This results in foods not being digested thoroughly.  If foods are not digested sufficiently, the vitamins and other nutrients aren't released from the food, and the body cannot absorb them.  This sets up a vicious cycle. Acid reflux and Gerd are actually symptoms of producing too little stomach acid.  Insufficient stomach acid production is seen with Thiamine and Niacin deficiencies.  PPI's like Tecta also block the transporters that pull Thiamine into cells, preventing absorption of thiamine.  Other symptoms of Thiamine deficiency are difficulty swallowing, gagging, problems with food texture, dysphagia. Other symptoms of Thiamine deficiency are symptoms of ADHD and anxiety.  Vyvanse also blocks thiamine transporters contributing further to Thiamine deficiency.  Pristiq has been shown to work better if thiamine is supplemented at the same time because thiamine is needed to make serotonin.  Doctors don't recognize anxiety and depression and adult onset ADHD as early symptoms of Thiamine deficiency. Stomach acid is needed to digest Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) in fruits and vegetables.  Ascorbic acid left undigested can cause intestinal upsets, anxiety, and heart palpitations.   Yes, a child can be born with nutritional deficiencies if the parents were deficient.  Parents who are thiamine deficient have offspring with fewer thiamine transporters on cell surfaces, making thiamine deficiency easier to develop in the children.  A person can struggle along for years with subclinical vitamin deficiencies.  Been here, done this.  Please consider supplementing with Thiamine in the form TTFD (tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide) which helps immensely with dysphagia and neurological symptoms like anxiety, depression, and ADHD symptoms.  Benfotiamine helps with improving intestinal health.  A B Complex and NeuroMag (a magnesium supplement), and Vitamin D are needed also.

      @pothosqueen, Welcome to the tribe! You'll want to get checked for nutritional deficiencies and start on supplementation of B vitamins, especially Thiamine Vitamin B 1.   There's some scientific evidence that the fat pad that buffers the aorta which disappears in SMA is caused by deficiency in Thiamine.   In Thiamine deficiency, the body burns its stored fat as a source of fuel.  That fat pad between the aorta and digestive system gets used as fuel, too.       Wow! You're pretty young to have a diagnosis of SMA syndrome. But youth also has its advantages when it comes to healing, without a doubt. You might be surprised to find out how your health improves and how much better you feel once you eliminate gluten from your diet. Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder that, when gluten is consumed, triggers an attack on the villous lining of the small bowel. This is the section of the intestines where all our nutrition is absorbed. It is made up of billions of tiny finger-like projections that create a tremendous surface area for absorbing nutrients. For the person with celiac disease, unchecked gluten consumption generates inflammation that wears down these fingers and, over time, greatly reduces the nutrient absorbing efficiency of the small bowel lining. This can generate a whole host of other nutrient deficiency related medical problems. We also now know that the autoimmune reaction to gluten is not necessarily limited to the lining of the small bowel such that celiac disease can damage other body systems and organs such as the liver and the joints and cause neurological problems.  It can take around two years for the villous lining to completely heal but most people start feeling better well before then. It's also important to realize that celiac disease can cause intolerance to some other foods whose protein structures are similar to gluten. Chief among them are dairy and oats but also eggs, corn and soy. Just keep that in mind.
