Sorry, we're all sick with colds this week. Megan's first illness that isn't life threatening!

She's making some progress. She's actually tasting things this week! No eating, but that is major. She's tasting without gagging most of the time too. The past couple days have been rought with the cold, but she seemed to feel some better tonight.

Hope all of you are well!

Hugs,

Tanya

Dear TCA,

It is so good to hear Megan is beginning to realize food is good. Maybe she will actually eat soon! Meanwhile, sorry to hear about those colds! Go to the healthfood store and get Sambucol. It is black elderberry extract. It boosts immunity up to 300 percent! As long as none of you are allergic to corn syrup, you could take it. You will get over your cold much faster taking that stuff! It saved me from developing broncchitis for a few years now, which is something. I used to get it everytime I got a cold, or I would get a sinus infection instead.

Sincerely,

NoGluGirl

I'm so glad that Megan's tasting food! That's a HUGE step for her!!! Go Meg!

I hope you are all feeling better.

How did I miss this--Megan is tasting food!! Such great news. That seems like a giant step in the right direction.

Hope you're all feeling better from the colds! :)

Finally got around to updating caring bridge:

**************************************************************

Sorry that it's been a while since I updated, but Megan, Cole and I were sick with colds last week and did pretty good to just get by. The good news is that Megan handled the cold better than Cole or myself and had no complications. Yea!!!! Cole is still getting over it, but only has a cough now. I hope none of you get it because it hangs on forever and makes you feel miserable!

Megan is gaining so fast that her GI reduced the caloric density of her formula on Monday. She's now at 22 cal/oz, as opposed to 25. She weighed in today at 20 lb. 11 oz. She's creeping into size 24 mos!!!! The problem is she's the length of a 10 mo. old! She's off the pump for 8 hours a day, which is great.

She is so happy these days and is really starting to feel good. She is soooo social, which is great since we had to isolate her for so long. She loves getting out and having company. She charms everyone with her smile, wave and dancing.

Her gagging seems to be improving. I would estimate she is gagging half as much as she was 2 mos. ago. I am soooo thankful. She is also starting to taste more foods. She will bite of little pieces of things, then spit them out. She is also tasting little bits of drinks. This is all major progress and we are excited to see her moving in the right direction. So far the taste of corn chips and bacon seem to be her favorites. Looks like her tastes are those of her dad's and she's not going to have my sweet tooth! Time will tell.

The cath is still on for 11/10. We'll probably keep her in a while before that to make sure she's not going into it with a bug or anything.

Thanks for all the continued prayers. We see slight improvement everyday and hope she will start to try to pull up, crawl and walk soon. So far, sitting alone in the floor is all she will do, which is an improvement from just after surgery. She can also go from a slightly reclined to a sitting position. Time will bring all that about.

She said Cole's name for the first time today! He was coughing his head off at the time and didn't hear it, though. Maybe he will soon.

Love to all - Have a blessed weekend.

Thanks for the update Tanya.

Sounds like things are going great, with the exception of the colds. :D

will the cath be here at Vandy?

TCA Contributor

I was thinking last night that I could finally change the name of this thread to Megan's Gagging IS Better!!!!! Happy Day! Praises!!! She's not over it yet, but she's making the progress we've all been praying for. THANK YOU!!!!

will the cath be here at Vandy?

Yes. It should require an overnight stay in the hospital. We will be going back sometime after that for a followup, but no visits are scheduled until then. Maybe we can finally meet??????? I know Cole and Timmy would love to play.

OKay question, do you need me on stand by for more blood? The Red Cross Vampire Bus will be near my home later this month and I was thinking it was about time to donate again... but I can wiat till after Megan's operation.

Thanks, but blood is not needed for the cath. I will give to have some in reserve for her just in case, but normally none is needed. If she doesn't use it, someone will get it. You really are just so kind. I'm not sure how a visit might work the day of the cath unless you came by the hospital, but when we go back for her follow up it probably would. I'll let you know for sure. Thanks again for the blessing you are!

I'm so delighted to hear Megan's doing well.

Best wishes, and I hope everything goes really smoothly with the next procedure. She's such a little trooper, I'm sure it will.

TCA,

Are you sure? Cuase once I donate its 56 days before they will allow it agian. You said YOU are gonna give blood to her? Did I read that right? Preahps it be better for me to do it so you can keep your strength up for it this!

As for the visit inthe hopstial, we can do that, but only if we get a sitter for Tim. Bringing a hyper redhead into a hospital is prbly against the rules, even if its not, it should be! LOL What ever would work best for you. Since Megan is my sister now, it be nice to meet her! :D

That is great news that Megan is still improving. Slow and steady is a good thing. You certainly have an angel in Vincent. Still saying prayers and sending hugs.

Sorry guys - been out of town for a week taking the kids to see the inlaws. We're home now with piles of laundry and little time! Meg's doing great. More details later.

There is an herb that was recommended to me by the lactation consultants I saw while breastfeeding. I am trying hard to remember the name. I will fill that in later. You need more calories and fat in order to produce. Can you do olive oil? Coconut oil? Why do you choose canola oil? Isn't that made from corn (high risk of allergy). Can you avacado? That is a very good food that is low risk of allergies and I gave it to both my babies starting at 4 months.

I guess I am coming in late on this and don't know your history b/c I don't know why you are on such a restricted diet. I am assuming you are having all kinds of reactions and need to figure that out. For me, I had good luck with eliminating the top 10 foods: fish, peanuts, soy, dairy, eggs, wheat, gluten, corn, etc. I pretty much narrowed it down from there. Can you go see someone who does keinesology and get muscle tested to narrow it down?

Gosh, I wish I could do something!

Finally got around to the update:

Just a quick update to let all of you know that Megan is improving more all the time. She is tasting more foods all the time. She will take tiny bites of things, then spit them out, but that's a huge step! She expects to have food in her hand if any of us are eating and gets mad if she doesn't. She's tasting popsicles and lots of other things. She even managed to chew the paper off of a sucker the other night without me realizing she had it. She like the taste of that too!

We got her a walker at a yard sale and she's starting to scoot around in it. She is getting closer to walking as her muscle tone and balance improve. She is really staring to communicate, nodding yes and saying yea. Her reflux has been improving, but it's been a bad couple days for gagging due to some allergy drainage that sets off her gag reflex.

She is getting to where she loves to go to other people and isn't clinging to me all the time. I think that shows she is feeling much better. She is very happy most of the time and is soooo nosey. We just got back from spending most of the week with Jarod's family, so she's thoroughly spoiled now! ; )

Hope all of you are doing well. We again thank you for the continued prayers. We thank God everyday for the support you have shown and for our little miracle!

Thanks so much for jumping in, but I actually stopped pumping last month. It was a hard decision, but after eliminating everything under the sun (literally) she didn't improve much. the gluten is the only thing I'm certain of. She is now on Neocate 1 + and thriving. I still have some pumped milk in the freezer and I give her some every week. I really do appreciate your concerns and suggestions and tried all of them I think. I hope things are better for your kids now.

I really do appreciate the offer to give blood again, but we should be able to cover it. I was planning to give, but you may have a point. We have 6 family members who have given for her before, though and are anxious to do so again. 3 have never given before and this gives them incentive! (Is that mean of me? ) As for getting a sitter for Tim, it is a children's hospital and hyper is common! They let Cole in there! We'll see how the plans are shaping up closer to the cath and make contact. You really are a saint and I so appreciate your willingness to help out. "God blesses us so much", as Cole would say. :):):)

Dear TCA,

It is such wonderful news to hear your daughter is improving! That allergy drainage is troublesome. My dad has sinus problems that can be quite severe. It would not be surpising if gluten was causing her so much difficulty. I had my gallbladder out, but even after that, had spells of dry heaves that would hurt my entire body. The nausea has improved quite a bit since I have gone gluten free. I still have Candida issues causing me problems, but things are more tolerable most of the time now. Due to the gallbladder removal, I need to watch my fat intake. Over eating fat can make me pretty ill. Hopefully, the Candida issue will be fixed soon. Meanwhile, I am thrilled your little baby is doing so well! Meg is "our" baby we all feel like on this forum. Keep the updates coming!

Sincerely,

NoGluGirl B)

Get tested for vitamin deficiencies.  Though neuropathy can be a symptom of celiac, it can also be caused by deficiencies due to poor digestion caused by celiac and could be easier to treat.

Thank you so much for your response  Yes it seems as though things get very painful as time goes on.  I'm not eating gluten as far as I know.  However, I'm not sure of cross contamination.  My system seems to weaken to hidden spices and other possibilities. ???  if cross contamination is possible...I am in a super sensitive mode of celiac disease.. Neuropathy from head to toes

EXACTLY! I was asked yesterday on my LAST video call with Standford and I stated exactly yes absolutely this is why I need the name! One, get proper care, two, not get worse.Im falling apart, stressed out, in pain and just opened email from Stanford stating I was rude ect.I want that video reviewed by higher ups and see if that women still has a job or not.Im saying this because I've been medically screwed and asking for help because bills don't pay itself. This could be malpratice siit but im not good at finding lawyers

We feel your pain. It took me 20+ years of regularly going to doctors desperate for answers only to be told there was nothing wrong with me … when I was 20 pounds underweight, suffering from severe nutritional deficiencies, and in a great deal of pain. I had to figure it out for myself. If you're in the U.S., not having an official diagnosis does mean you can't claim a tax deduction for the extra expense of gluten-free foods. But it can also be a good thing. Pre-existing conditions might be a reason why a health insurance company might reject your application or charge you more money. No official diagnosis means you don't have a pre-existing condition. I really hope you don't live in the U.S. and don't have these challenges. Do you need an official diagnosis for a specific reason? Else, I wouldn't worry about it. As long as you're diligent in remaining gluten free, your body should be healing as much as possible so there isn't much else you could do anyway. And there are plenty of us out here who never got that official diagnosis because we couldn't eat enough gluten to get tested. Now that the IL-2 test is available, I suppose I could take it, but I don't feel the need. Someone else not believing me really isn't my problem as long as I can stay in control of my own food.
    • AlwaysLearning
If you're just starting out in being gluten free, I would expect it to take months before you learned enough about hidden sources of gluten before you stopped making major mistakes. Ice cream? Not safe unless they say it is gluten free. Spaghetti sauce? Not safe unless is says gluten-free. Natural ingredients? Who knows what's in there. You pretty much need to cook with whole ingredients yourself to avoid it completely. Most gluten-free products should be safe, but while you're in the hypersensitive phase right after going gluten free, you may notice that when something like a microwave meal seems to not be gluten-free … then you find out that it is produced in a shared facility where it can become contaminated. My reactions were much-more severe after going gluten free. The analogy that I use is that you had a whole army of soldiers waiting for some gluten to attack, and now that you took away their target, when the stragglers from the gluten army accidentally wander onto the battlefield, you still have your entire army going out and attacking them. Expect it to take two years before all of the training facilities that were producing your soldiers have fallen into disrepair and are no longer producing soldiers. But that is two years after you stop accidentally glutening yourself. Every time you do eat gluten, another training facility can be built and more soldiers will be waiting to attack. Good luck figuring things out.
