Does Anyone Else Have Cravings?

Am I missing something in my diet? Since going gluten-free, I have been craving candy and chocolate, and never used to have a sweet tooth. I imagine my body is freaking about about the reduction in refined carbs in general, but oddly enough, I'm not craving bread, but gum drops and jelly beans and the like! This definitely doesn't do much for the waistline when I indulge! Ideas? I am not the BEST at maintaining a healthy diet, but what I might be missing in food intake I make up for with a daily multivitamin.

I go the the frozen section of the grocery store and see the California, thin pizza and say...ohh. But then I would take one bite and say that I have done that. Never did like pizza before. It's all a mind game. You can't have it, so tell youself that you don't need it. That's how I try to deal without getting angry.

Reprogram yourself and perhaps is will be easier for you.

I have developed a habit of eating Dove Dark Chocolate--I crave it every day! I buy the little individualy wrapped squares and try to limit them to 2 or 3 a day. That dosen't always work

I had a chocolate free day today. So far anyway

I'm still having a few pains in my chest, so I am trying to see if it is the chocolate. I sure hope not

I love the green and black's 70 % cocoa MMMmmmm

Just two or three Doves a day! What discipline....do I get cravings?? Only all the time now. Hershey's Hugs for me, milk chocolate and almonds.....wish I could say I was like Patti, but am known to eat half a bag at a time.... Generally I don't keep stuff like that in the house as I just want to keep eating!

I have had the opposite effect. I used to crave my coffee in the mornings and now for some reason, I can't even stand the idea. The only explanation I can come up with is that my flavored coffee had gluten in it.

I think that craving sweets is a reaction to too much protein - and you can offset it a bit by eating apple cider vinegar. what? that's not as yummy as desssert. (The theory is you've got a lot of acid foods and need alkaline - or you've got a lot of contractive foods and need expansive -- I forget which.)

Always the killjoy....

You know what I've been eating for dessert since I gave up all sugar, fruits, and sugary veggies five days ago (yes, I know exactly how many days it's been, how many minutes, how many seconds).....

almond butter

4 drops stevia

cinnimmon (sP?)

I get cravings all the time! Most of the time, out of absolutely nowhere, and sometimes for the strangest things, that its like NEED..IT..NOW.. :P

I'm more addicted to coffee since being gluten-free, seriously..

I think cravings in general are a sign that you're missing something in your diet, though the thing you are craving may be unrelated to what you need. That's why people who go on "diets" fall off their programs. Their bodies are telling them to EAT!! and they get mad cravings.

I agree eKatherine. I was going to say that I thought cravings were the body's natural way to signal deficiencies. Also I have read they can be about balance in the body, and the yin and yang of energy. For example, if you eat a lot of salt, then often you crave something sweet to balance it out (i.e. salty sunflower seeds/popcorn chased by a soda) And then I have also read that you can have strong cravings for what you are allergic/intolerant too, like an addiction.

I often crave pizza or guac. - don't know why, just every now and then out of the blue and I have to have it - NOW.

I wonder what I am missing - since

My guess would be fat, avocadoes are high in fat and the enzyme lipase. They are also high in potassium.

Maybe I'm missing something that's found in the candy and chocolate. Hmm....as much as I'd like to VALIDATE eating it all the time...I suppose I should figure out what that item is I"m missing! Here's my argument...at least I'm eating DARK chocolate...kinda better than milk...supposedly.

Something else I'm craving RIGHT NOW? A Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwich. Funny thing is, I haven't eaten these on a consistent basis since I was a kid. I need to find some GOOD gluten-free bread. Yum yum yum

This latter issue is the one that worries me. Since going gluten-free, I find I'm craving AND eating even MORE starchy foods than I did in wheaty days. I'm not sure if it is some sort of subconscious attempt to re-gluten myself... none of these starches have gluten, but they are often things that would have had wheat in them before. I always liked starchy food, ate a lot of "healthy" grains, but a reasonable balance. Now I find I'm really going overboard, having a hard time stopping. I've been gluten-free for about 6 weeks now, & it doesn't seem to be stopping. Anyone else have this experience? Or have any insights about what's going on?

Leah..

I remember going through that when I tried the oh-so-popular Adkins diet back in the day. I figure I'm going through a similar thing...with the candy and such...just in carbohydrates in general. I don't know if it's normal or not or if we're missing something...

Mango04 Enthusiast

I had intense sugar cravings after I went gluten-free. That went away after a few months.

Hmmm, very interesting. With me it isn't candy so much as the cookies, bread, crackers, that sort of thing.

Hope mine go away soon! I'm gaining weight I didn't really need!

Mango04 Enthusiast

Oh I forgot to mention that after the sugar cravings subsided, I had protein cravings. All the cravings did stop eventually.

This treatment looks promising. Its aim is to provoke immune tolerance of gluten, possibly curing the disease. It passed the phase 2 trial with flying colours, and I came across a post on Reddit by one of the study volunteers. Apparently, the results were good enough that the company is applying for fast track approval.  Anokion Announces Positive Symptom Data from its Phase 2 Trial Evaluating KAN-101 for the Treatment of Celiac Disease https://www.reddit.com/r/Celiac/comments/1krx2wh/kan_101_trial_put_on_hold/

Hi everyone  This has been a crazy year so far... How many people actually get entire sensory overload from gluten or something similar ?  My jaw is going nuts ..and that nerve is affecting my upper back and so on ...  Bones even hurt.  Brain fog. Etc  I had eggs seemed fine.   Then my aid cooked a chicken stir fry in the microwave because my food order shorted a couple key items .   I was so hungry but I noticed light breading and some ingredients with SOY !!! Why are we suffering with soy ? This triggered a sensitivity to bananas and gluten-free yogurt it seems like it's a cycle that it goes on.  The tiniest amount of something gets me I'm guessing the tiny bit of breading that I took one tiny nibble of ...yikes ..im cringing from it .. Feels like my stomach is going to explode yet still very hungry 😔  How long does this last?! Thank you so much

I have had orthodontic work done. The 3M invisalign material was no problem. BUT my retainers are another matter. They seemed okay for a few months. Now, however, they cause a burning sensation on my tongue, gums and insides of my lips. The burning sensation is now spreading to my throat. I notice it when I breathe. This is annoying and interferes with my enjoyment of eating. I am visiting with my provider tomorrow. We'll see where this goes from here.
