HI Dear Cyber friends.

Your advice is so right on. thanks all.

Just wanted to let you know that I had a good day. Must have been all the 'good vibes' you were sending my way. Went swimming and it was wonderful until...5 min before the end of the class. The PT dragon MLD pt from HELL came into the pool. Posted this on the 'daily strength' forum and since it's so late and want to go to bed will do a cut and paste here.

This is not going to get me down..fighting back with all I have in me. Amazing

how much 'power' we have when we feel so bad and can be so greatful

we've come so far. The 'glutening' didn't last that long thank god.

You know I think it was Robbin that said the cake mix too might have

been the problem..and I am leaning toward that now. it wasn't

cranbrook (?) but just found the box and it was gluten free pantry

Decadent Chocolate cake and vanilla frosting and it was the cranbrook

i think. Any of you had trouble with those??:o

Anyway, It was a beautiful day here in PA and forced myself to go swimming as wanted to

garden but went. Those of you that know the struggle I've had with the

MLD PT..can appreciate this ..she came into the pool and in front of

the whole class said, 'How do you expect me to return your call when

your in the pool?'

I explanined I'de left the message on Tuesday morning. She got very

rude, defensive, and truly obnoxious in front of everyone.

She said I had to bring my husband with me for more training. I told her I wanted to

learn to compression wrap my leg byself and not depend on him. She told me I was

'incapable of doing it myself'

I HAD AN APT WITH HER TO TRY TO GET MORE INSTRUCTION ON HE MASSAGE

AND WRAP FOR MONDAY AT 8:30...NEEDLESS TO SAY...I'm canceling it and

calling insurance company to see if I can get another MLD PT assigned

to me as i have 12 visits approved yet to go.

3 strikes and YOUR OUT in my book.

So I'm feeling better and not taking anyones guff anymore.

Love you friends. You give me strenght to keep fighting.

Judy

Judy,

Glad to see you're feeling better today. :)

Did anyone watch Oprah today.

She had Faith Hill and Tim McGraw on and they were shopping and Faith held up a pair of yellow croc's and said how they loved them , ugly as they were and were going to get a pair for Oprah.

If you want some better get them..cause..if Oprah has them as 'one of her favorit things" show, we'll never be able to find them and they'll up the price. Judy

Judy, I am so glad you had a much better day yesterday :) Hope that continues for you, today, and every day!

I saw that Tim and Faith were on Oprah again yesterday, I saw it when it originally aired. I LOVE Tim and Faith, they are such a fabulous couple, and individually such great people, talented singers. LOVE them :D

Hi everybody else, it's awfully quiet in here again

Tavi, how are you doing?

Did I miss the joke?? Do birkenstocks really make "thongs" or are they flip flops??

CarlaB Enthusiast

They're flip-flops. But someone called them thongs, which created the joke.

Thanks for asking Julie: Still having a hard time. I haven't cried yet, maybe once I do it will feel better. I told her she's really going to miss me! ;)

Julie--I called them "thongs" beacuse the company rep who sells them on QVC (where I order mine from) always calls them that. Actually, she makes kind of a joke out of it, so it sticks in my mind. But they go on your feet--not elsewhere!

I love Tim and Faith, too! I missed them on Oprah the first time, and caught a little of it yesterday--the cooking segment. Tim was so funny! :D

Yeah, my challenge and biopsy is long over! I've been on WW and gluten-free for almost 3 weeks! The biopsy came back normal, but the dr's want me gluten-free regardless...I live in the twilight zone

On the upside - Figured out that the horrible stomach pain is migraines (stomach hurts instead of head) so I'm on a preventative for that, and I've lost 10 lbs! WAHOO!!!

1/3 of the challenge weight gone, 2/3 more to go <_<

C-I must have been away when the results came back in for your biopsy-sorry you didn't get the screaming positive you were hoping for. <_<

I suppose it doesn't really matter as Gluten clearly isn't the food choice for you!!(and your doc supports that)

How's the anaemia now you're G.F again?

Good to here you've lost 10 pounds already. You'll be back to your old svelte self in no time.

I did WW a couple of years ago-how many points are you on?

Evening all to fellow residents

I'll let you know how the anemia is in a couple of weeks when I do the blood test again, I doubt it will be good, because toward the end there my stomach was too upset all the time for vitamins and is just now calming down.

Haha! Svelte! I have another 35 to go after I reach my "svelte" weight. Right now I'm at 24 points with 35 weekly points. Not too bad. :P

I cant crop the toilet out of my pic....I'm directly in front of it. I was just kneeling in front of the "potty" picking something up off the floor when my mom took the pic that she now calls her "favorite". I dont think theres any mistaking the toilet in the background though.

Maybe I'll put it up and see if anyone comments on the toilet behind my head!:lol:

Find a friend who's good with Photoshop. Maybe you can be picking something up off the surface of the moon or the beach or something.

Meanwhile, school's started and I miss the fellas. Then they get home and start fighting with each other and I wish they were back at school. It's a vicious cycle. Don't get me wrong, I love them dearly when they are in different rooms from each other.

Ty had his first hockey evaluation the other day. So cute. Poor little thing. He can hardly skate so he and two other kids sort of had a skating lesson with one of the coaches while the other hundred or so kids :o ran drills and relays. It was a madhouse. 4 more to go and then they'll decide what team he's on. He's a first time player so he'll be on Novice (age 7-8) 6 which is the new players and players with a bit less skill. Novice 5 & 6 are lots of fun. I have a feeling the Novice 1 parents are a bit too intense for me. Walker's having his evaluation after school. He's first year Atom (9-10). He's played for two years and for 12 weeks after hockey ended he played shinny with his cousin and his friends and they were all top level Atom and Novice players, so Walker really had to work hard to keep up. It'll be interesting to see where he places on a team this year. I hope it's a team where FUN is more important than winning. Winning is great, but I hate when people start placing blame when the team loses a game. After all, they're just kids! The NHL draft for these guys is still 8 or 9 years away. (Now is when the really intense parent will say: That's not much time. Better get 'em signed up for more powerskating and puckhandling lessons.

Linda,

That's one thing I hate about sports. So many coaches have a win or I'll make you feel this small attitude. Not good for the kids at all. Extracurricular activities are supposed to be fun and a way to get excercise. Kids need to learn it's ok to lose and to just go out and do their best and have fun. My daughter already has a hard time losing board games if we play any and we are of the mind set to just have fun. She hasn't been around anyone who's been win-win so I don't know where she gets it from. Granted, it is even more fun to win, but everyone needs to learn that is also fun to lose if you have the right mindset.

I think of course there has to be an element of 'competetiveness' if you are serious about any sport-but when they are so little it should be fun.

My youngest seems to have inheirited his Dad's 'bad loser' attitude!! :o

He just can't cope with not winning.

I suppose it's your nature.Whilst my hubby and youngest son are 'highly strung' people,me and the other 2 boys are sooo laid back-we just can't be bothered, and we find it amusing to watch the others lose their temper over a silly board game!(which only makes them worse  )

The most interesting thing I witnessed, was a kid on Ty's soccer team. He was only 7 but HUGE! He was the biggest kid on Walker's hockey team also. Anyway, this kid being so big could get across the soccer field in no time. The soccer fields are scaled down for the Under-8 crowd. I think they have 3 fields going across the width of a regular field, but I digress. Glenn (my husband) was the coach of the team and stressed every game day that he was not keeping score, and that whoever had the best attitude or greatest play in the coach's mind, would get a player-of-the-game. It was only our team that did this, just little plastic gold medals for the kid who had the most passes to a teammate or who got injured and went back in to play or whatever. This kid hadn't had a player of the game yet and Glenn kept bugging him to pass. "You have your 3 goals. We want the kids on the other team to come back and play next year. You're not allowed anymore goals today. Work on your passing." He ended up passing to someone who missed the pass, the other team got the ball and scored on the girl in goal. The boy then turns to the goalie with this disgusted look on his face and said, "What was that?" The girl was really upset. Glenn pulled the kid aside and had a chat with him and he did have the grace to seem embarrassed about his tantrum and he did eventually apologize. Later in the game, the boy was trying to pass and not score another goal...he had an excellent shot on goal but instead passed it to the girl who had been in goal when he flipped out and she got a goal. High fives all around. Glenn gave the boy player of the game because he said he thought he'd learned a valuable lesson and even though he had a good shot he passed and they still got a goal and he could tell that the boy was really struggling with the thought of passing but did the right thing and they still scored. He did have a bit better attitude after that. The parents said this was the first year he'd ever started scoring goals, he'd had a big growth spurt and he was crazy with trying to win win win all the time when he'd never had that attitude before.

I really think parents have to get involved with the whole "it's not whether you win or lose but how you play the game" thing.

And now, off to school to get the boys.

I haven't been getting any email notifications from the board for some reason so I just went back and read what I've missed (a lot)!

Chelsea- Sorry you didn't get a positive on your biopsy after all that agony, but at least you're back on the road to health and I can't believe you've already lost 10 lbs. That rocks!

Tavi- Just another hug. It must be really hard. :(

Judy- Fire that EVIL PT- what a jerk!!!! As we all know, you are capable of ANYTHING you put your mind to. I really just don't "get" some people's attitudes.

I just wanted to pop in and say hello! Hello.......

AndreaB Contributor

Stephanie,

I like your new avatar too!

Molly,

I would like to know too.

Morgan,

Glad to hear you're having fun.

Bev,

Good to see you. Have you started house hunting?

If I'm a good girl my time on this computer/forum will be lessened. I will always be reading, just may not always have time to post.

Hello all!

morganb Newbie

Chelsea, I'm so sorry you didn't get a positive on your biopsy :( I can't believe it.

I also read quite a bit on the shoe conversation and I have to say that I like converse, I like flip flops, and I like moccasins, but I have never been a fan of crochs or tennis shoes (I only where tennis shoes when I have to). I am loving my moccasins at school. I have to walk so much and they're just soooooo comfortable. It's like wearing slippers to class, which I have not done by the way.

Also, I just want to share with everyone, including Mom (you haven't heard this yet) I joined the raquetball club. I've only been taking class for 2 weeks and I'm already a part of the club. Obviously, one doesn't have to be good to join. I was acually just going to practice one night and the president persuaded me to join. They just happened to be meeting that same night at that same time.

Good job, Morgan! That will be fun.

So our school has a class homecoming competition during the week before homecoming. We have an overall theme and then each class has a different theme for each day that also has an overall theme that fits into the big overall theme like this year it is california dreamin' and then monday is californial grown (class colors) frosh-cheese (wear yellow) soph. lettuce (wear green) jun. RASINS (wear black) and sen. Red Wine (wear red). Each day we also have games during brunch and lunch between all the classes. You get points for 1st 2nd 3rd and 4th pace in the games. The biggest thing in homecoming week is the night rally which is the thursday before the friday homecoming game and we have AIRBANDS which is the major test of our class competition.

Each class has a mix of 2:00 with usually 3-4-5 songs. Your class presidents and airband leaders work like al summer and the beginning of school working on the mix and hte choreography. Then whoever in the class wants to can sign up during our class meeting and we start rehersals. We have lifts and all this stuff and we spend 1 month, each weekend working on it and then the week before we have morning practices from 5-8 at school. Its the biggest thing in our school and USUALLY the seniors win then juniors 2nd soph. 3rs and frosh 4th. BUT our class got 3rs when we were frosh, 2nd when we were soph. so we are HOPING to win airbands this year and then we will beat the seniors in homecoming because airbands are the biggest. So basicallt it is a dance that the classes have to a mix of songs in the gym a thursday night, and there are costumes and then at the end of the song you have to have some way of saying what class you are (we are 2008) and your costumes are usually your class color

it's really really fun and it gets you into school spirit (which i have NONE) but you just get to have a LOT of fun after a LOT of work!

Then during the game we have the floats.

Thanks again for the detailed explanation. Just to clarify, I actually did have my initial tests done while I was still consuming gluten. I stopped eating gluten only after those tests were completed, and it has now been about 70 days since I went gluten-free. I understand the limitations around diagnosing NCGS and the importance of antibody testing and biopsy for celiac disease. Unfortunately, where I live, access to comprehensive testing (including total IgA and endoscopy with biopsy) is limited, which makes things more complicated. Your explanation about small-bowel damage, nutrient absorption, and iron-deficiency anemia still aligns closely with my history, and it’s been very helpful in understanding what may be going on. I don't wanna get Endoscopy and I can't start eating Gluten again because it's hurt really with severe diarrhea.  I appreciate you taking the time to share such detailed and informative guidance. Thank you so much for this detailed and thoughtful response. I really appreciate you pointing out the relationship between anemia and antibody patterns, and how the high DGP IgG still supports celiac disease in my case. A gluten challenge isn’t something I feel safe attempting due to how severe my reactions were, so your suggestion about genetic testing makes a lot of sense. I’ll look into whether HLA testing is available where I live and discuss it with my doctor. I also appreciate you mentioning gastrointestinal beriberi and thiamine deficiency. This isn’t something any of my doctors have discussed with me, and given my symptoms and nutritional history, it’s definitely worth raising with them. I’ll also ask about correcting deficiencies more comprehensively, including B vitamins alongside iron. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge and taking the time to help. I’ll update the forum as I make progress.

Blood tests for thiamine are unreliable.  The nutrients from your food get absorbed into the bloodstream and travel around the body.  So, a steak dinner can falsely raise thiamine blood levels in the following days.  Besides, thiamine is utilized inside cells where stores of thiamine are impossible to measure. A better test to ask for is the Erythrocyte Transketolace Activity test.  But even that test has been questioned as to accuracy.  It is expensive and takes time to do.   Because of the discrepancies with thiamine tests and urgency with correcting thiamine deficiency, the World Health Organization recommends giving thiamine for several weeks and looking for health improvement.  Thiamine is water soluble, safe and nontoxic even in high doses.   Many doctors are not given sufficient education in nutrition and deficiency symptoms, and may not be familiar with how often they occur in Celiac disease.  B12 and Vitamin D can be stored for as long as a year in the liver, so not having deficiencies in these two vitamins is not a good indicator of the status of the other seven water soluble B vitamins.  It is possible to have deficiency symptoms BEFORE there's changes in the blood levels.   Ask your doctor about Benfotiamine, a form of thiamine that is better absorbed than Thiamine Mononitrate.  Thiamine Mononitrate is used in many vitamins because it is shelf-stable, a form of thiamine that won't break down sitting around on a store shelf.  This form is difficult for the body to turn into a usable form.  Only thirty percent is absorbed in the intestine, and less is actually used.   Thiamine interacts with all of the other B vitamins, so they should all be supplemented together.  Magnesium is needed to make life sustaining enzymes with thiamine, so a magnesium supplement should be added if magnesium levels are low.   Thiamine is water soluble, safe and nontoxic even in high doses.  There's no harm in trying.
    • lizzie42
Neither of them were anemic 6 months after the Celiac diagnosis. His other vitamin levels (d, B12) were never low. My daughters levels were normal after the first 6 months. Is the thiamine test just called thiamine?
    • knitty kitty
Yes, I do think they need a Thiamine supplement at least. Especially since they eat red meat only occasionally. Most fruits and vegetables are not good sources of Thiamine.  Legumes (beans) do contain thiamine.  Fruits and veggies do have some of the other B vitamins, but thiamine B 1 and  Cobalamine B12 are mostly found in meats.  Meat, especially organ meats like liver, are the best sources of Thiamine, B12, and the six other B vitamins and important minerals like iron.   Thiamine has antibacterial and antiviral properties.  Thiamine is important to our immune systems.  We need more thiamine when we're physically ill or injured, when we're under stress emotionally, and when we exercise, especially outside in hot weather.  We need thiamine and other B vitamins like Niacin B 3 to keep our gastrointestinal tract healthy.  We can't store thiamine for very long.  We can get low in thiamine within three days.  Symptoms can appear suddenly when a high carbohydrate diet is consumed.  (Rice and beans are high in carbohydrates.)  A twenty percent increase in dietary thiamine causes an eighty percent increase in brain function, so symptoms can wax and wane depending on what one eats.  The earliest symptoms like fatigue and anxiety are easily contributed to other things or life events and dismissed.   Correcting nutritional deficiencies needs to be done quickly, especially in children, so their growth isn't stunted.  Nutritional deficiencies can affect intelligence.  Vitamin D deficiency can cause short stature and poor bone formation.   Is your son taking anything for the anemia?  Is the anemia caused by B12 or iron deficiency?
    • lizzie42
Thank you! That's helpful. My kids eat very little processed food. Tons of fruit, vegetables, cheese, eggs and occasional red meat. We do a lot of rice and bean bowls, stir fry, etc.  Do you think with all the fruits and vegetables they need a vitamin supplement? I feel like their diet is pretty healthy and balanced with very limited processed food. The only processed food they eat regularly is a bowl of Cheerios here and there.  Could shaking legs be a symptom of just a one-time gluten exposure? I guess there's no way to know for sure if they're getting absolutely zero exposure because they do go to school a couple times a week. We do homeschool but my son does a shared school 2x a week and my daughter does a morning Pre-K 3 x a week.  At home our entire house is strictly gluten free and it is extremely rare for us to eat out. If we eat at someone else's house I usually just bring their food. When we have play dates we bring all the snacks, etc. I try to be really careful since they're still growing. They also, of course, catch kids viruses all the time so I  want to make sure I know whether they're just sick or they've had gluten. It can be pretty confusing when they're pretty young to even be explaining their symptoms!
