I haven't been on in awhile and my account got deleted. But I'm baccckkk!

I just need to vent here. I just can't believe some of the things that people I know and care about are going through right now. We found this week that my good friend and old neighbor has such a rare form of blood cancer that there is NO name for it????????????WTF?????????????? It has spread to his lungs, stomach, colon and liver but since it's this unknown type of blood cancer that they can't even stage him and they have no idea what his prognosis is.

Then tonight, one of my friends in graduate school, who I had emailed for support because I'm having my exam defense on Monday and I thought I was stressed out, let me know that her baby (she's 4 months pregnant) has severe heart valve problems so they are seeing a specialist at Children's Hospital on Monday.

what is going on? I keep thinking things have just got to calm down for awhile and they never do.

Sad.

Sorry you've got so much stress right now, that you're friend's not doing well, and about your other friend's baby. Wow, sure seems that when it rains, it pours, doesn't it?

Hey B:

Good to hear from you. Lord knows, when it rains, it pours sometime. And it take a strong person to work things out. As we get older, unfortunatly, we will see more of bad things happening to good people. Who was it that said "life is not for sissies".

I hope that everything will settle down for you and hoping for strengh for you in helping your friends during a terrible time in their lives.

hi carla- It's me! beverly. good to see your smiling face. how have YOU been feeling?

I knew who you were!!! :D Even without the picture!

Thanks for asking about me ... I've been taking my chinese herbs, seeing the acupuncturist, eating five meals a day featuring protein and veggies, avoiding caffeine, sugar, and alcohol, getting lots of rest, and I'm finally feeling better. I'm not 100%, doc says it'll take a year to get to where I should be, but I feel much, much better than I did. I'm still spending a lot of time around here ... it's just too boring to get all the rest I'm supposed to be getting!

Hey Bev -- I'm sorry you're having such a crappy time. How was your doctor's appointment? (Had to throw that in quickly, sorry.) It's really hard to know why such horrible things happen. I SURE wish I had the answers. All I know is that the Big Guy and I are going to have a REALLY long talk when I get there . . . . He has some 'splainin to do . . . . .

Please know that you are always in my thoughts and prayers, but will be EXTRA in the next few days.

Love & Hugs,

Lynne

Oh it's so good to SEE my peeps here! It's been so long. elye- YOU guys are the ones that are comforting!

Lynne- I can just hear you now when you get to the Pearly Gates (A VERY VERY VERY LONG time from now) "Hey Big Guy, you got some 'splainin to do" (in your best Ricky Ricardo voice twinged with a Southern accent). How the heck would that sound??????????????

My belly button is fine but the darn surgeon cancelled my appt on friday for emergency surgery so now I can't get in to see him until NEXT Friday. Apparently, someone up there thinks that I need to walk around longer with this thing sticking out. it doesn't hurt anymore though, so that's good.

DingoGirl- How are you?????? I saw some tazorac cream in my in-laws bathroom and thought of you. Ouch!

Hugs to all, B

Beverly, I am sorry to get off topic. But, your photo is great. You are certainly beautiful and such a nice smile.

Hi Sweetie!!!!!!!!!!! Aww shucks, thanks for the compliments. I've been trying to get that photo up here for so long because I was so HAPPY when it was taken. We were out on Orcas Island in Puget Sound and my hubby had just taken me out for a romantic dinner of gluten-free seafood and wine. It was a lovely night!

So, how are you feeling? Have you found a new place to live yet?

I love the new pic!

Judy, we got a sauna, not a hot tub ... so I'm not living your dream! I do love it though.

Oh my gosh! I'd take the sauna too! They really are good for you.

I'm feeling better with a few blips here and there- I legumed myself to pieces the other night when I ate 4 Reese's pb cups. I was stressed out, they were here and I thought "oh maaybe it was just the apartment." Wrong! I was in screeching joint pain the next day and LEARNED my lesson. I've realized that I don't "truly" have FMS- but my legume intolerance sure does a good job of mimicking it.

The persistent nausea, D and all that has totally cleared up. it's so strange- we went back yesterday to try and finish panicking and after 3 hours I felt nauseous and my hubby broke out in a cold sweat- I had forgotten ALL about that symptoms of hiss. He never has them anywhere else. So we had to ditch.

He's back up there today with his brother and our downstairs neighbor doing more packing. I had to beg out because I have to defend my PhD Qualifying Exam tomorrow (the one I took back in June). YIKES!

It's for the best though because yesterday when I walked in, I found that our landlord has started patching up the celilings (where I suspect the problem lies) while our stuff was still in there. i cannot express HOW ANGRY I am aabout it. We are paid through sept 30th and he never even asked to enter the apartment, never mind do work. There were paint chips all over the kitchen.

But we did find a place to live. It's aa 3 bedroom house with a big back yard for less than we were paying in NH. I'm seeing visions of puppiesrunning about!

Bev,I'm so sorry you are having such a rotten time.

Seems there's alot of hard times going on with our members lately :(

BTW-luuurve the new photo-looking good!!

:):)

Edit:Glad you guys have found a new place!(Puppies!!!!)

CarlaB Enthusiast

That's really funny/strange about the apt. making both of you sick! That's great news about the house, about the FMS being legume intolerance, and that you don't have to help move :P . See, you have some good news thrown in there, too!!

Yea, we got the sauna for the health benefits. We live in a 90 year old house and the master brm. is a finished attic. Adam's closet opened into the unfinished part of the attic where there were windows, so we had just finished that room and a new closet for him, which left his old closet for the sauna. It fits perfectly! This morning I put jojoba oil on my hair and got a sauna and hot oil treatment all in one! I'm really loving it. It's also very relaxing.

DingoGirl Enthusiast

Yes, Bev, awesome photo....and a new place....and PUPPIES!!! Yes, some little Bernese puppies....we need new dogs on the board here, the Dingos do get tired of chasing after everybody....

SO glad you found a new place! I think I"ve written about my House of Terror on this board before...had to move into parents' for three months and every time I'd go back home would have major D....so crazy....but I think the house was haunted and that was the problem...the new girl who bought it sold it after a year, the next-door-neighbor told me that no one lived there longer than a year of year-and-a-half  SCARY

BTW what is wrong with your belly button? seems everyone knows but me!

Mtndog Collaborator

I have a herniated belly button- YUCK!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes- I agree...more dogs... I was at the house we're renting today doing some cleaning and I sat in the baackyard dreaming of a big fluffy one bounding through the snow this winter!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WAIT- HOUSE OF TERROR? i haven't heard about it? Do tell what you mean!

Beverly,

Wow! There is a lot going on for you. I guess I have my answer from the R2 thread.

Good luck with your test tomorrow.

I'm so glad you are out of that apartment. Sounds absolutely awful. Be sure to keep us posted on how your doing AND when you get those pups. :P

DingoGirl Enthusiast

oh you guys....House of Terror is an awful, awful story...don't want to take over this thread....actually would require more like a book to tell what happened and how it changed my life - no, changed ME forever - and not in good ways.

(edited - I posted about it and then TOOK IT OFF!!! it's Bev's thread!!) :)

Yes -Bev - puppies, bounding through the snow!! that's what you need!

@Jane02, I hear you about the kale and collard greens.  I don't do dairy and must eat green leafies, too, to get sufficient calcium.  I must be very careful because some calcium supplements are made from ground up crustacean shells.  When I was deficient in Vitamin D, I took high doses of Vitamin D to correct the deficiency quickly.  This is safe and nontoxic.  Vitamin D level should be above 70 nmol/L.  Lifeguards and indigenous Pacific Islanders typically have levels between 80-100 nmol/L.   Levels lower than this are based on amount needed to prevent disease like rickets and osteomalacia. We need more thiamine when we're physically ill, emotionally and mentally stressed, and if we exercise like an athlete or laborer.  We need more thiamine if we eat a diet high in simple carbohydrates.  For every 500 kcal of carbohydrates, we need 500-1000 mg more of thiamine to process the carbs into energy.  If there's insufficient thiamine the carbs get stored as fat.  Again, recommended levels set for thiamine are based on minimum amounts needed to prevent disease.  This is often not adequate for optimum health, nor sufficient for people with absorption problems such as Celiac disease.  Gluten free processed foods are not enriched with vitamins like their gluten containing counterparts.  Adding a B Complex and additional thiamine improves health for Celiacs.  Thiamine is safe and nontoxic even in high doses.  Thiamine helps the mitochondria in cells to function.  Thiamine interacts with each of the other B vitamins.  They are all water soluble and easily excreted if not needed. Thank you so much @knitty kitty for this insightful information! I would have never considered fractionated coconut oil to be a potential source of GI upset. I will consider all the info you shared. Very interesting about the Thiamine deficiency.  I've tracked daily averages of my intake in a nutrition software. The only nutrient I can't consistently meet from my diet is vitamin D. Calcium is a hit and miss as I rely on vegetables, dark leafy greens as a major source, for my calcium intake. I'm able to meet it when I either eat or juice a bundle of kale or collard greens daily haha. My thiamine intake is roughly 120% of my needs, although I do recognize that I may not be absorbing all of these nutrients consistently with intermittent unintentional exposures to gluten.  My vitamin A intake is roughly 900% (~6400 mcg/d) of my needs as I eat a lot of sweet potato, although since it's plant-derived vitamin A (beta-carotene) apparently it's not likely to cause toxicity.  Thanks again!
    • knitty kitty
Hello, @Jane02,  I take Naturewise D 3.  It contains olive oil.   Some Vitamin D supplements, like D Drops, are made with fractionated coconut oil which can cause digestive upsets.  Fractionated coconut oil is not the same as coconut oil used for cooking.  Fractionated coconut oil has been treated for longer shelf life, so it won't go bad in the jar, and thus may be irritating to the digestive system. I avoid supplements made with soy because many people with Celiac Disease also react to soy.  Mixed tocopherols, an ingredient in Thornes Vitamin D, may be sourced from soy oil.  Kirkland's has soy on its ingredient list. I avoid things that might contain or be exposed to crustaceans, like Metagenics says on its label.  I have a crustacean/shellfish/fish allergy.  I like Life Extension Bioactive Complete B Complex.  I take additional Thiamine B 1 in the form Benfotiamine which helps the intestines heal, Life Extension MegaBenfotiamine. Thiamine is needed to activate Vitamin D.   Low thiamine can make one feel like they are getting glutened after a meal containing lots of simple carbohydrates like white rice, or processed gluten free foods like cookies and pasta.   It's rare to have a single vitamin deficiency.  The water soluble B Complex vitamins should be supplemented together with additional Thiamine in the form Benfotiamine and Thiamine TTFD (tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide) to correct subclinical deficiencies that don't show up on blood tests.  These are subclinical deficiencies within organs and tissues.  Blood is a transportation system.  The body will deplete tissues and organs in order to keep a supply of thiamine in the bloodstream going to the brain and heart.   If you're low in Vitamin D, you may well be low in other fat soluble vitamins like Vitamin A and Vitamin K. Have you seen a dietician?

I do not know this, but since they are labelled gluten-free, and are not really a product that could easily be contaminated when making them (there would be not flour in the air of such a facility, for example), I don't really see contamination as something to be concerned about for this type of product.
