Janet,

You've never seen "The Shining"? :o

There was a day when you could lose a "star" for such a thing...ahhh, the good old days

I am fully clothed for those that are wondering B)

YES! I have seen The Shining but it has been ages. Apparently, that was not a scene that stuck with me. And I speak for all of your co-workes (and co-sillies) . . . thank you for wearing clothes today.

I'm not much of a horror film fan at all . . . I don't care for the anticipation anxiety. I did however, love Pulp Fiction. I never saw (or had the desire to see) Reservoir Dogs or Natural Born Killers.

Sorry to hear that we have a couple of grumps in the group . . . you're welcome to join our Halloween festivities. They start about 4:30. We set up a buffet in the cul-de-sac. This year in honoUr of my children, we will be segregating gluten-free and gluten areas. The main course has been changed to gluten-free (walking tacos). My neighbor's idea - isn't she a sweatheart! Then usually the dads take the kids trick-or-treating, the moms stay in the cul-de-sac and hand out candy (as a group) and despite it being a week night, alcohol will be involved.

That is so nice you are having a gluten free section of the buffet. That is just thoughtful!

 did I miss something? who IS that in Jess's avatar? is this something I should know? Doesn't Jess have her hair pulled, scientist-like, in a troll knot atop her head???

OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :o Where ARE you halloweenies today?? the half-naked Zombie Man is walking around my 'hood again!! I have posted his photo....

I find it MOST curious that never ONCE, in three years of living here, have I seen this man walking around......UNTIL he decides to go out shirtless, in hospital pants w/ no undies (trust me), in 60-degree weather and with a wound in his abdomen.

(BTW he is not, insofar as I know, playing w/ himself in avatar - he is clutching his abdomen  )

what can it mean, sillies, what can it mean????????????????

:lol::lol::lol:

Okay, okay...just trying to connect some dots, here....

The wonderful Robert Goulet languishes in an American hospital for a week, waiting for a double-lung transplant, before succumbing to a fatal pulmonary illness....A bizarre-looking man in partial hosptal gear is spotted, clutching what looks like a huge incision in his upper side--where one lung would be.

Hmmmmm.....

Wait!! There's something ELSE! Bev....thought she had pneumonia, but was happy to hear that it's an uncomplicated lung thing.....

Man...curiouser and curiouser.....I feel we're so close to something big here. Indeed, "what can it mean?!"

was he mumbling "brains...braaains...braaaains" by any chance?

Has there been a rash of organ thefts in your gated community?

Call Geraldo Rivera, he'll get to the bottom of this. Meanwhile keep the Iroqoius Skull crusher handy, and maybe sharpen a chef's knife or two. :o

Hmmmm....curiouser and curiouser indeed!!!!!!!!!!!!

But wait - - I must clarify the location of the wound (and because I read too many parole evaluations, of COURSE I am sure it is gunshot or stab wound )

My dear Emily, I do entirely see where your logic is going with the lung connections and the untimely death of RG, and Bev's non p-neumonia. Alas, this escaped mental patient's wound is lower, just right of center. Not a big enough bandage to hide a colostomy bag.

but I really see your point, please DO keep the brilliant theories proffered up. :P

Has there been a rash of organ thefts in your gated community?

Now this IS something I'm going to have to look into....perhpas today's the perfect day, I shall make up a bright orange flyer with a gentle inquiry into any missing organs of tenants.

but you know something - - this freakzone where I live is exactly that because of its complete ABSENCE of freaks. Nothing abnormal ever goes on here. NOthing. The streets are dead quiet, every house looks the same, nearly every yard is perfect (except for mine), hardly anyone even WALKS around for pete's sake, and if you go outside at night - you can hear a pin drop (that part is not so bad!). NOT KIDDING. There is NO character here, it's absolutely Stepford in its sterility....

so to see this half-nude organ-stealing murderer shuffling around - well you can see the excitement and titillation I"m having.

It's not easy being us you know.

Susie- I think that since this man has been wandering around sans shirt with hospital pants (at least it's not just a johnny!) with an obvious organ missing......maybe someone should call the police. Perhaps he needs help. I can't believe you took his picture....OMG, wait a minute....are you SURE it's not K-Fed? And Britney ran into him? Or over him? Hmmmmm.......the plot thickens.

Hi all--I'm back! :D

You guys have been so busily funny since I've been gone. It was so-o-o-o nice to log back on (finally)!!!!!

Gosh--so much has gone down....we lost Robert Goulet (when I heard, I immediately thought about this thread), and Amanda's wedding day is just about here. :)

I took some time out from this heinous unpacking (still not as bad as packing <_< ) earlier and read what all I missed. I have a rotten cold and I don't know my way around my new town--but I was cracking up reading

Susie--that poor surgery guy in your neighborhood :o Anything new on him?

Janet--I wanna come to your Halloween party, too :)

We live out in the country now--no trick or treaters at all :( !!! In our old neighborhood, we would get so many kids, at least one year we ran out of candy.

Carry on--I'm too tired to be funny :P

Hi Meredith . . . I'm going to assume that's your name since Susie called you that and you didn't correct her . . . of course you don't want to make Susie angry . . . don't disagree with Susie . . . Oh, no, wait that's Bev. She's the one that will come after you with a cornstalk!! Of course, who knows what that poor man did to Susie and now he walks around the neighborhood with no shirt and an abdominal wound.

In my experience, lurking is required for awhile. You have to get some history on some of the cutting edge discussions that we have and get a handle on our personalities (and most of us have more than one )

Trick or Treating is over here . . . now I will spend the next two days cleaning up after the feast. I'm miserable - you have to try a little of everyone else's candy, right?

Patti - Yea! Worse parts over! How are the washer and dryer? Did they make it OK?

I just wanted to point out that I joined this thread on page 154 on September 14th. We have more than doubled the number of pages since then. I just want that documented so that when Scott hands out the raises, I get a big o' chunk o' change because of the increase in production!!

@Jane02, I hear you about the kale and collard greens.  I don't do dairy and must eat green leafies, too, to get sufficient calcium.  I must be very careful because some calcium supplements are made from ground up crustacean shells.  When I was deficient in Vitamin D, I took high doses of Vitamin D to correct the deficiency quickly.  This is safe and nontoxic.  Vitamin D level should be above 70 nmol/L.  Lifeguards and indigenous Pacific Islanders typically have levels between 80-100 nmol/L.   Levels lower than this are based on amount needed to prevent disease like rickets and osteomalacia. We need more thiamine when we're physically ill, emotionally and mentally stressed, and if we exercise like an athlete or laborer.  We need more thiamine if we eat a diet high in simple carbohydrates.  For every 500 kcal of carbohydrates, we need 500-1000 mg more of thiamine to process the carbs into energy.  If there's insufficient thiamine the carbs get stored as fat.  Again, recommended levels set for thiamine are based on minimum amounts needed to prevent disease.  This is often not adequate for optimum health, nor sufficient for people with absorption problems such as Celiac disease.  Gluten free processed foods are not enriched with vitamins like their gluten containing counterparts.  Adding a B Complex and additional thiamine improves health for Celiacs.  Thiamine is safe and nontoxic even in high doses.  Thiamine helps the mitochondria in cells to function.  Thiamine interacts with each of the other B vitamins.  They are all water soluble and easily excreted if not needed. Interesting Reading: Clinical trial: B vitamins improve health in patients with coeliac disease living on a gluten-free diet https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/19154566/ Safety and effectiveness of vitamin D mega-dose: A systematic review https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34857184/ High dose dietary vitamin D allocates surplus calories to muscle and growth instead of fat via modulation of myostatin and leptin signaling https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/38766160/ Safety of High-Dose Vitamin D Supplementation: Secondary Analysis of a Randomized Controlled Trial https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31746327/ Vitamins and Celiac Disease: Beyond Vitamin D https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11857425/ Investigating the therapeutic potential of tryptophan and vitamin A in modulating immune responses in celiac disease: an experimental study https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/40178602/ Investigating the Impact of Vitamin A and Amino Acids on Immune Responses in Celiac Disease Patients https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10814138/

Thank you so much @knitty kitty for this insightful information! I would have never considered fractionated coconut oil to be a potential source of GI upset. I will consider all the info you shared. Very interesting about the Thiamine deficiency.  I've tracked daily averages of my intake in a nutrition software. The only nutrient I can't consistently meet from my diet is vitamin D. Calcium is a hit and miss as I rely on vegetables, dark leafy greens as a major source, for my calcium intake. I'm able to meet it when I either eat or juice a bundle of kale or collard greens daily haha. My thiamine intake is roughly 120% of my needs, although I do recognize that I may not be absorbing all of these nutrients consistently with intermittent unintentional exposures to gluten.  My vitamin A intake is roughly 900% (~6400 mcg/d) of my needs as I eat a lot of sweet potato, although since it's plant-derived vitamin A (beta-carotene) apparently it's not likely to cause toxicity.  Thanks again!
    • knitty kitty
Hello, @Jane02,  I take Naturewise D 3.  It contains olive oil.   Some Vitamin D supplements, like D Drops, are made with fractionated coconut oil which can cause digestive upsets.  Fractionated coconut oil is not the same as coconut oil used for cooking.  Fractionated coconut oil has been treated for longer shelf life, so it won't go bad in the jar, and thus may be irritating to the digestive system. I avoid supplements made with soy because many people with Celiac Disease also react to soy.  Mixed tocopherols, an ingredient in Thornes Vitamin D, may be sourced from soy oil.  Kirkland's has soy on its ingredient list. I avoid things that might contain or be exposed to crustaceans, like Metagenics says on its label.  I have a crustacean/shellfish/fish allergy.  I like Life Extension Bioactive Complete B Complex.  I take additional Thiamine B 1 in the form Benfotiamine which helps the intestines heal, Life Extension MegaBenfotiamine. Thiamine is needed to activate Vitamin D.   Low thiamine can make one feel like they are getting glutened after a meal containing lots of simple carbohydrates like white rice, or processed gluten free foods like cookies and pasta.   It's rare to have a single vitamin deficiency.  The water soluble B Complex vitamins should be supplemented together with additional Thiamine in the form Benfotiamine and Thiamine TTFD (tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide) to correct subclinical deficiencies that don't show up on blood tests.  These are subclinical deficiencies within organs and tissues.  Blood is a transportation system.  The body will deplete tissues and organs in order to keep a supply of thiamine in the bloodstream going to the brain and heart.   If you're low in Vitamin D, you may well be low in other fat soluble vitamins like Vitamin A and Vitamin K. Have you seen a dietician?
    • Scott Adams
I do not know this, but since they are labelled gluten-free, and are not really a product that could easily be contaminated when making them (there would be not flour in the air of such a facility, for example), I don't really see contamination as something to be concerned about for this type of product.
