Richard, so good to see you! It's not been the same without you

So sorry to hear about your sister. My heart goes out to you, your sister, and all in your family.

I don't think you are off base at all suspecting a celiac connection, gluten wreaks havoc on the neurological system. And given it's in your family, and your mom has the gene, it is very likely that clearing gluten out of her diet will be very helpful.

Here is a link discussing this very thing:

Richard-sorry to hear about your sister. I am keeping your family in my thoughts. Hope she gets the help she needs.

Everyone is right, things have not been the same without you :)

A little silly--

Two men are out ice fishing at their favorite spot sitting quietly and drinking beer.

Almost silently, so as not to scare the fish, one guy says, "I think I'm gonna divorce my wife - she hasn't spoken to me in over two months."

After slowly sipping his beer, the other guy thoughtfully replies, "You might reconsider... women like that are really hard to find!"

No. A cubit is what you get put into when you work at a cheap office. So actually, you don't want cubits added to your life and since worrying won't add them, I guess that means worrying is a good thing.

Mygawd.....was Jesus working in a cubit? Must have been, as there is that quote from him. I thought he was out fixing people's houses and mangers and making wooden furniture. Maybe he was not just a carpentrer, but a general contractor, which would perhaps put him in an office setting.:lol:

Also Trifecta, Sisyphean and Menses

And heinosity, avatarse and anal expression....

Richard, so good to see you! It's not been the same without you

Hi, Richard! This is indeed sad news about your sister, and I am really sorry. I have frequently read about depression being one of the most common neurological symptoms of gluten intolerance/celiac. Ron Hoggan has a couple of great articles on this site.

Tom!!!!!

Is it your birthday, or anniversary of joining?

Ah.....methinks it's his birthday....He mentioned being a nut-house Aquarius. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Tom!! :lol::lol:

I'm not off base here, right?I was trying to see if there is research that showed celiac disease manifesting with depression as a symptom. She has none of the GI symptoms...

:o OMG - celiac manifesting with depression?????????? DUDE - that was my ONLY symptom for more than 35 years!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I did not have anything intestinally wrong until the four or five years before dx.

I am so sorry about your sister. She can KICK THIS now if she goes off gluten - it will change the course of her life. However, meds can jump-start one's neurotransmitters and actually provide a sense of well-being for many.....and I'm loathe to admit that they CAN help many people.

However, my first experience on an antidepressant, when I was about 21, kicked me into my first manic episode....it was awful. So then I had the really fun experience of being a rapid-cycling bipolar type II for the next 20 years.

I think Patti's sister is at the stage I was in the last three years or so before my celiac dx - no longer able to absorb meds/nutrients etc. to get better. {BTW I am SO sad, Patti, that your sis won't go off gluten......just heartbreaking. :( ]

I dearly hope you can get your sister to AT LEAST remove wheat from her diet, if not all gluten......it's hard to convince people of this, though. :( One has to be quite desperate, and willing to go ANYthing for better mental health....and most people prefer to just take meds, which only partially address the problem.

I'd be happy to help in any way, if I can.....pm me if you need to. :)

NICE TO SEE YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!! and NO, 'tis not the same without our founder!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :P

Ugh--I remember that well :( Tis truly heinous. Maybe a wee bit of chocolate?

Richard!

Great to see you! :) I'm so sorry about your sister--I have a very similar thing going on in my family. I wrote about it here a while ago (so hard to go back and find anything in this thread), but the gist of it is that my sister has been in and out of the hospital for depression 3 times this past year. It seemed to become debilitating (she lost weight, stopped eating, and was found to be anemic) as she had to deal with her husband being diagnosed with a serious illness.

I have gotten nowhere in trying to have her get tested for Celiac--even though I carry the DQ2 gene and since I'm diagnosed, she has a much higher chance of having it.

I did some research into the links between Celiac and depression and found that there most certainly is a connection. I think it's definately worth a try for your sister--I know Susie will have a lot to weigh in on with this subject. Please, urge her to get tested.

An aside--my sister was put on antidepressants as well, but they don't seem to be helping as much as expected. (She also sees a therapist). My take on it is that she may not be absorbing the meds, and that's why she hasn't seen much improvement in over a year.

In my brief search this morning I came across quite a bit of research pointing towards the celiac disease/depression connection. I agree that she should be tested, but she is currently unemployed and without insurance...(did I mention she is depressed?) She only went to the Dr. because my mother (a nurse) got the doc to see her for free. He put her on Prozac, which worries me...isn't there a connection between prozac and suicidal tendencies? That's just what I would look for in an anti-depressant...

She is in such a fragile state of mind that I don't want to overwhelm her with the possibility that she may need to go gluten-free to get better...going gluten-free may be just one step along a very long path to getting well. There are other issues, that i won't get into here, that are compounding her gloom.

I appreciate all of the well wishes and support from everybody. Hopefully the meds will help her get back on her feet and allow her to start getting well.

Peace

I understand completely, Richard. It's a very difficult and sensitive situation. I know you'll keep this foremost in your mind, and you'll know when the time is right to broach the subject with her.

Hope the meds will kick in soon and help--maybe then she will be more open to the possibility of being gluten free. One step at a time ;)

Take care :)

Carla, do your teeth feel really slimy? I had braces in grades 7/8 and when I got them off I couldn't believe how slick and slimy my teeth felt. It was like I had forgotten how it felt to feel the surface of my teeth with my tongue and against my cheeks. Your teeth look great. Make sure you wear your retainer religiously so your teeth don't move back!

I'm feeling a little calmer today about my dad's close call and thankfully my blood sugar is being more cooperative now that I'm not all panicky and uptight. I'm going to have my dad and brother over to supper tomorrow. I guess one good thing about a scare like this is that it makes you appreciate what you have. Not that I didn't already!

Thanks Donna .... good hair day and braces off all in one day, LOL.

Alex, not really. They really need my dental cleaning ..... there is a bit of a staining problem from the abx I've been on (not so bad you can see it in the picture, but bad enough that they don't feel smooth).

Thanks for the retainer advice. I have a "tooth positioner" I have to wear 24/7 till next Tues. except for that picture and to eat .... it does the final fine tuned moving of the teeth .... then I get permanent retainers next week and wear the tooth positioner at night.

pretty PRETTY coloUrs!!!!! Yes! and maybe Alex can do some of her famous confetti.....also we'll be using freeze-dried ersatz marshmallows from Janet's KABOOM cereal......

Richard - - I have been on - I'm pretty sure - every single antidepressant known to man...and also many other HIDEOUS drugs that I don't even think should be legal.....but anywho.....there were four or five meds that absolutely had me crawling out of my skin. Each of those, I was only on for one to two weeks. Prozac was one of them......BUT - - Prozac works for many people. [um....I actually think I was more homicidal than suicidal on Prozac! ] It is all very individual....but if she feels distinctly WORSE on Prozac, she'll know right away - and she should call the doctor immediately and switch to another SSRI. It is trial and error.

Most pharmaceutical companies also have temporary (four- to six-month) programs in which they'll provide free drugs - although I assume the doctor will just give her samples - they always have tons of those.

Yes, she could be too overwhelmed and maybe not desperate enough to go gluten-free at this time....but remember, it is possible.....at the time of my dx I couldn't even walk my dogs - I drove them to the orchard and sat against the fence, weeping, weak and sicker than hell (don't forget grief-stricken over the Robert breakup) and THOUGHT the gluten-free diet was far, far too difficult - it required much effort.

But it was the most life-changing endeavor imaginable...... :) and so worth it.

Carla - nice teeth! :D

What a busy day we're having in our little corner of the world!

Carla, you have really purty teeth----> :D

Richard, I also did not do well on Prozac. It completely changed my behavior, I was not at all myself, a whole different maniac of a person that thought differently acted differently. It also made me not want to eat, I ate literally an apple a week and developed anorexia.

I think what Susie said is key, it's all individual, because I know people that have done well on it.

I think what is important is that you, and everyone around her, keep an eye out for these changes if they do occur and then her medication can be adjusted.

Carla has TEEF! Beautiful TEEF!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've missed you all as well. My how time flies...I can't begin to catch up on the silli-bidness that I've missed, but I'm glad to see you've kept the lights on.

I actually logged on today for "official business" :o

My older sister was Dx'd before I was, my mom is asymptomatic but carries the gene (not THE "Gene" Bev) :P ...so it kind of makes sense that she may suffer as well... I'm not off base here, right?I was trying to see if there is research that showed celiac disease manifesting with depression as a symptom. She has none of the GI symptoms...

I just want to help her get better...it's frightening -the change in her demeanor and her withdrawl from the world at large.

Sorry to cast a cloud over the siliness. Off to take care of business.

We have MISSED YOU!!!!!!!! You can always use the Silly Thread to talk! Sorry about your sister, but add me to the list of people who've been on BOATLOADS of psych meds before going gluten-free. Since going gluten-free I have been able to get off almost all of them.

When I was 21, I sank into the deepest, scariest vortex of depression ever. I think Susie knows the whole story. I'll just leave it at my doctor said I was the MOST depressed patient he had ever evaluated

He put her on Prozac, which worries me...isn't there a connection between prozac and suicidal tendencies? That's just what I would look for in an anti-depressant...

No more so than any other depression drugs. And if you're aware of it, and she knows about it, you can keep an eye on her. It's a risk with anyone who's depressed :(

If black seed oil is working for his Afib, stick to it, but if not, I can say that ablation therapy is no big deal--my mother was out of the procedure in about 1 hour and went home that evening, and had zero negative effects from the treatment. PS - I would recommend that your husband get an Apple watch to monitor his Afib--there is an app and it will take readings 24/7 and give reports on how much of the time he's in it. Actual data like this should be what should guide his treatment.

This happened to me as well. What’s weirder is that within a couple hours of taking paxlovid it subsided. I thought maybe I got glutened but after reading your post not so sure.

Hi Tiffany. Thank you for writing your dituation and  circumstancesin such detail and so well writte, too. I particularly noticed what you wrote about brain for and feeling like your brain is swelling and I know from my own experiences that's how it feel and your brain really does swell and you get migraines.    Way back when I was in my 20s I read a book by 2 MD allergist and they described their patient who came in complaining that her brain, inside her cranium, was swelling  and it happened when she smelled a certain chemical she used in her home. She kept coming back and insisting her brain actually swelled in her head. The Drs couldn't explain this problem so they, with her permission, performed an operation where they made a small opening through her cranium, exposed her to the chemical then watched as she brain did swell into the opening. The DRs were amazed but then were able to advise her to avoid chemicals that made her brain swell. I remember that because I occasionally had brain fog then but it was not a serious problem. I also realized that I was becoming more sensitive to chemicals I used in my work in medical laboratories. By my mid forties the brain fog and chemicals forced me to leave my  profession and move to a rural area with little pollution. I did not have migraines. I was told a little later that I had a more porous blood brain barrier than other people. Chemicals in the air would go up into my sinused and leak through the blood brain barrier into my brain. We have 2 arteries  in our neck that carry blood with the nutrients and oxygen into the brain. To remove the fluids and used blood from the brain there are only capillaries and no large veins to carry it away so all those fluids ooze out much more slowly than they came in and since the small capillaries can't take care of extra fluid it results in swelling in the face, especially around the eyes. My blood flow into my brain is different from most other people as I have an arterial ischema, adefectiveartery on one side.   I have to go forward about 20 or more years when I learned that I had glaucoma, an eye problem that causes blindness and more years until I learned I had celiac disease.  The eye Dr described my glaucoma as a very slow loss of vision that I wouldn't  notice until had noticeable loss of sight.  I could have my eye pressure checked regularly or it would be best to have the cataracts removed from both eyes. I kept putting off the surgery then just overnight lost most of the vision in my left eye. I thought at the I had been exposed to some chemical and found out a little later the person who livedbehind me was using some chemicals to build kayaks in a shed behind my house. I did not realize the signifance  of this until I started having appointments with a Dr. in a new building. New buildings give me brain fog, loss of balance and other problems I know about this time I experienced visual disturbances very similar to those experienced by people with migraines. I looked further online and read that people with glaucoma can suffer rapid loss of sight if they have silent migraines (no headache). The remedy for migraines is to identify and avoid the triggers. I already know most of my triggers - aromatic chemicals, some cleaning materials, gasoline and exhaust and mold toxins. I am very careful about using cleaning agents using mostly borax and baking powder. Anything that has any fragrance or smell I avoid. There is one brand of dishwashing detergent that I can use and several brands of  scouring powder. I hope you find some of this helpful and useful. I have not seen any evidence that Celiac Disease is involved with migraines or glaucoma. Please come back if you have questions or if what I wrote doesn't make senseto you. We sometimes haveto learn by experience and finding out why we have some problems. Take care.       The report did not mention migraines.

Hi Jmartes71 That is so much like my story! You probably know where Laytonville is and that's where I was living just before my 60th birthday when the new Dr. suggested I could have Celiacs. I didn't go on a gluten challange diet before having the Celiac panel blood test drawn. The results came back as equivical as one antibody level was very high but another, tissue transaminasewas normal. Itdid show I was  allergic to cows milk and I think hot peppers. I immediately went gluten free but did not go in for an endoscopy. I found an online lab online that would do the test to show if I had a main celiac gene (enterolab.com). The report came back that I had inherited a main celiac gene, DQ8, from one parent and a D!6 from the other parent. That combination is knows to sym[tons of celiac worse than just inheriting one main celiac gene. With my version of celiac disease I was mostly constipated but after going gluten-free I would have diarrhea the few times I was glutened either by cross contamination or eating some food containing gluten. I have stayed gluten-free for almost 20 years now and knew within a few days that it was right for me although my recovery has been slow.   When I go to see a  medical provide and tell them I have celiacs they don't believe me. The same when I tell them that I carry a main celiac gene, the DQ8. It is only when I tell them that I get diarrhea after eating gluten that they realize that I might have celiac disease. Then they will order th Vitamin B12 and D3 that I need to monitor as my B12 levels can go down very fast if I'm not taking enough of it. Medical providers haven't been much help in my recovery. They are not well trained in this problem. I really hope this helps ypu. Take care.
