Things may have changed a bit since we were there, but ice is still ice, and a visit to the Columbia Icefield is cool!

Yeah, the Columbia ice field is pretty cool with its tractors and crevasses and all dat ice and what have you, but OMG, those skeeters!!!! worse than Montana!!!, dat's about all I remember :o:P (I was still recovering from HellowstoneYellowstone at that point) :P

.......and yes, chillins were the TV remotes back in the day!

Yeah, but if you don't/didn't have no chillins, then you has to sneak up and pry loose the remote from the hand of the sleepin' spouse, who would immediately wake up and say "I was watchin' that!!" Still happens!! Wot is it with guys and remotes??? Sure helps to have more than one cable outlet! :D

OK, where do I start--so much to comment on!

Pat--your hair is adorable!!! I love it!

SuzyQ, dear, PUT DOWN THE REMOTE AND JUST WALK AWAY! Please, woman, just get your priorities straight and join my Mafia already.

:lol::rolleyes:

Jess--what happened with the job? The show? The kitchen? The strappy shoes?

Emily--sounds like you are having so much fun :)

Nikki--I am weighing the pros and cons of the whirlygig pro-cess and have not yet reached a definitive decision on the matter.:huh::unsure:

Neroli!!!! You really have been everywhere! I would love to sit down for an evening with you and listen raptly to your tales. :D

Bev--so nice to hear from you, always. I actually would like to ask you some questions about Maryland/the east coast. We have been talking about taking a trip to Chincoteague Island, VA for a long time now, but Scott and I have always wanted to see MD, Delaware and Maine, too. Everything I've read about Chinc. says that it's better to stay on the MD end at Ocean City and drive to Assateague to see the ponies on the north side. Any experience, advice on this? Any idea what airport is the best destination from Detroit? Car rental? Hotels? gluten-free dining options for kids there?

Not that I can afford such an adventure <_<

Peter--my goodness, the FLIES you must have with all of that garbage :o I have a swarm around my house today just from the two or three bags that were in my garbage cans all week :gag: Yesterday was garbage day so I sprayed a bleach cleaner all over the cans and lids and hosed them out--too late. The (ew) maggots had already evolved and have taken flight :angry:

Weddings, birthdays, iced tea--ahhhh. Always so nice to read everyone's posts :P

The emotional moment at my son's wedding a few years ago.........

He and Melissa were standing at the altar, facing each other, saying their vows......

He reaches up and wipes a tear off Melissa's cheek.......all the women let out a collective, "Awwwwwwwww"

so sweet!

HI BEVEL...HOPE YOU DON'T MIND ME STEALING YOUR THOUGHTS!!!!

You can steal our thoughts any time, Joodith :)

waiting for the Cable Guy again. I have GOT to have remote access in my bedroom. Imagine the incivility for God's sake, having to actually GET OUT OF YER BED and WALK OVER to change channels. And geez, some of those channels are......300 numbers away from each ohter. Takes about 20 minutes, so it doesn't happen. I just leave it on one channel.

that was NOT the point of all these channels, now was it.

Glad to hear yer phriend's ok, though. :)

I'd love to play Mafia on da book, but I still don't know how.....it always seems to try and get me to invite others or sends me off in a completely different direction  I'm not completely computer illiterate.....but da book is mighty confusin' to me....

OMG people!!! The silly thread was number 4 down the list. :o WIH?? We must rectify this egregious wrong

And...OMG!!! I just booked our totally expensive long overdue fabulous family mini-vacation! Weekend after next we are going to Traverse City on the west coast of the state (on Lake Michigan) to stay 3 nights at Great Wolf Lodge :D I am so happy I am beside myselph B) And we are going to a horse show-jumping event :P And we are going to the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park, too!!! And Pirates Cove Adventure Park. OMGOMGOMG.

I tried so hard to find something--I've been looking for months for a a way to go somewhere--with horses, waterpark/kid fun/find a sitter for my dog/and gluten-free dining options...and today it all just literally fell into place for Traverse City. I have a lovely young family friend to house/dogsit for me, already found enough gluten-free restaurants there to feed us plenty, and booked it with a discount because I mentioned the horse show that is town. WOO-HOO! There is even a gluten-free bakery and a gluten-free pizzeria there--heaven :unsure::P

I was looking at Sleeping Bear Dunes and I swear it is so beautiful, it looks like the Carribean--blue water, white sand. The hotel has a massive indoor water park and all kinds of stuff, and you wouldn't believe how cheap I got it.

<happysigh>

Can't stop smiling :D

MIMMSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!! yer mini-vacation! well, I think it sounds fab (esp. when one has kidz and such), but I tend to want to be......away from humanity and in a very quiet place (beach or mountains, or some quaint European village or Canadian lodge) when I travel......so that Pirate's Cove thing? what in hell is that? do you go on rides and stuff? do you like rides?<from one who will never go on a ride again - this is another reason God did NOT give me children, but gave me cable TV>

Well, you sound quite excited about it (YAYY!!!!), so I'm thinking you'll have a fab time :)

I am such a strange tourist as I've grown older (as if I ever travel <_< ). Or maybe just since I'm a diagnosed Celiac. :( I dunno......I could literally travel to anyone's home and....just hang out and be with the peeps. No need to do lots of frantic running around and seeing MOST things.

But I'm kinda crazy.

I want to go see my cousins in Minnesota and really, just hang out at their house and be with them and their darling, nutty kids. No need for running around Minneapolis and such. (unless they want to take me to Aqua Vie, or some other posh restaurant)

OMGahhhhhh!!....what a day

Had to go to Al's sportsday (wash out - p***ed down with rain <_< ) - then wiv Tel for hosp app (arthritis).....he's no longer allowed to take the drugs that WERE working as that are doing nasty things to his blood and kidneys  ....so they are giving him steroid injections for the time being (happy jabs they ain't  )

They want him to start another drug with a horrific list of side effects (oft' worse than the arthritis pain!)

THEN, finally get home (exhausted stressed menstrual lady coming through), realise after dinner and heinously lengthy clear up of kitchen that I have to start AGAIN as Al needs snacks for TWO parties tomorrow

Nowt in freezer EXCEPT 2 gluten-free sausage roll thingies ....

Tel volunteered to make Pizza - decided to try new pizza base recipe - BIG MISTAKE (always use tried and tested method when in a hurry)

Pizza base was a disgusting soggy mess and if we HAD a dog we wouldn't have fed it him

Meanwhile *I* burnt the solitary sausage rolls to carbon.....

Pizza take 2 in progress......

Still gotta make other (gluten peeps) packed lunches and the kitchen looks like a small bomb (rice flour) went off!!!

Dan walked in from work and asked if I could cut his hair tonight  (no chance).....and YES!, I have to iron Al's new shirt for his after school party tomorrow!!!

...oh, and (nearly finished moaning) I haven't had dinner yet (starving, wildly fluctuating menstrual blood sugars!!! )

Anyhoo - how's y'all??

Delish pizza crust--originally posted by "hangininthere"--I just made it again last night :P

'New York Style' Pizza Crust

Makes one 16" pizza crust or two smaller crusts - foldable floppy and not crispy.

2 tablespoons rapid-rise yeast

1 1l3 cup warm milk

1 teaspoon sugar

1 1l3 cup brown rice flour--(I used white)

1 cup tapioca flour--(I used half cornstarch and half potato starch)

2 teaspoons guar gum--(I use xanthan)

1 teaspoon salt

2 teaspoons gelatin powder

2 teaspoons dried Italian seasoning--(I omit)

2 teaspoons olive oil

2 teaspoons apple cidar vinegar

Preheat oven to 425 degrees.

In small bowl, dissolve yeast in warm milk and sugar.

In separate large bowl, blend together dry ingredients.

Stir in yeast mixture.

Add oil and apple cider vinegar.

Mix well.

Pat onto buttered and floured sheet - sprinkle flour on top of dough before you pat down, to avoid sticking to hands.

Rub olive oil on top of patted out dough.

Bake plain untopped crust for 10 minutes.

Remove from oven and add toppings.

Return to oven and finish baking for another 20 minutes.

Raising you vitamin D will increase absorption of calcium automatically without supplementation of calcium.  A high PTH can be caused by low D causing poor calcium absorption; not insuffient calcium intake.  With low D your body is not absorbing calcium from your food so it steals it from your bones.  Heart has priority over bone. I've been taking 10,000 IU D3 a day since 2015.  My doctor says to continue. To fix my lactose intolerance, lots of lactobacillus from yogurts, and brine fermented pickles and saurkraut and olives.  We lose much of our ability to make lactase endogenosly with maturity but a healthy colony of lactobacillus in our gut excretes lactase in exchange for room and board. The milk protein in grass fed milk does not bother me. It tastes like the milk I grew up on.  If I drink commercial milk I get heartburn at night. Some experts estimate that 90% of us do not eat Adequite Intake of choline.  Beef and eggs are the principle source. Iodine deficiency is a growing concern.  I take 600 mcg a day of Liquid Iodine.  It and NAC have accelerated my healing all over.  Virtually blind in my right eye after starting antihypertensive medication and vision is slowly coming back.  I had to cut out starches because they drove my glucose up into the 200+ range.  I replaced them with Red Bull for the glucose intake with the vitamins, minerals and Taurine needed to process through the mitochodria Krebs Cycle to create ATP.  Went from A1c 13 down to 7.9.  Work in progress. Also take B1,B2,B3,B5,B6. Liquid Iodine, Phosphatidyl Choline, Q10, Selenium, D and DHEA.     Choline supplemented as phosphatidylcholine decreases fasting and postmethionine-loading plasma homocysteine concentrations in healthy men +

@catnapt, Wheat germ has very little gluten in it.  Gluten is  the carbohydrate storage protein, what the flour is made from, the fluffy part.  Just like with beans, there's the baby plant that will germinate  ("germ"-inate) if sprouted, and the bean part is the carbohydrate storage protein.   Wheat germ is the baby plant inside a kernel of wheat, and bran is the protective covering of the kernel.   Little to no gluten there.   Large amounts of lectins are in wheat germ and can cause digestive upsets, but not enough Gluten to provoke antibody production in the small intestines. Luckily you still have time to do a proper gluten challenge (10 grams of gluten per day for a minimum of two weeks) before your next appointment when you can be retested.

Hello, @asaT, I'm curious to know whether you are taking other B vitamins like Thiamine B1 and Niacin B3.  Malabsorption in Celiac disease affects all the water soluble B vitamins and Vitamin C.  Thiamine and Niacin are required to produce energy for all the homocysteine lowering reactions provided by Folate, Cobalamine and Pyridoxine.   Weight gain with a voracious appetite is something I experienced while malnourished.  It's symptomatic of Thiamine B1 deficiency.   Conversely, some people with thiamine deficiency lose their appetite altogether, and suffer from anorexia.  At different periods on my lifelong journey, I suffered this, too.   When the body doesn't have sufficient thiamine to turn food, especially carbohydrates, into energy (for growth and repair), the body rations what little thiamine it has available, and turns the carbs into fat, and stores it mostly in the abdomen.  Consuming a high carbohydrate diet requires additional thiamine to process the carbs into energy.  Simple carbohydrates (sugar, white rice, etc.) don't contain thiamine, so the body easily depletes its stores of Thiamine processing the carbs into fat.  The digestive system communicates with the brain to keep eating in order to consume more thiamine and other nutrients it's not absorbing.   One can have a subclinical thiamine insufficiency for years.  A twenty percent increase in dietary thiamine causes an eighty percent increase in brain function, so the symptoms can wax and wane mysteriously.  Symptoms of Thiamine insufficiency include stunted growth, chronic fatigue, and Gastrointestinal Beriberi (diarrhea, abdominal pain), heart attack, Alzheimer's, stroke, and cancer.   Thiamine improves bone turnover.  Thiamine insufficiency can also affect the thyroid.  The thyroid is important in bone metabolism.  The thyroid also influences hormones, like estrogen and progesterone, and menopause.  Vitamin D, at optimal levels, can act as a hormone and can influence the thyroid, as well as being important to bone health, and regulating the immune system.  Vitamin A is important to bone health, too, and is necessary for intestinal health, as well.   I don't do dairy because I react to Casein, the protein in dairy that resembles gluten and causes a reaction the same as if I'd been exposed to gluten, including high tTg IgA.  I found adding mineral water containing calcium and other minerals helpful in increasing my calcium intake.   Malabsorption of Celiac affects all the vitamins and minerals.  I do hope you'll talk to your doctor and dietician about supplementing all eight B vitamins and the four fat soluble vitamins because they all work together interconnectedly.

Hi Jane: You may want to try the D3 I now take. I have reactions to fillers and many additives. Sports Research, it is based in the USA and I have had no bad reactions with this brand. The D3 does have coconut oil but it is non GMO, it is Gluten free, Soy free, Soybean free and Safflower oil free.  I have a cupboard full of supplements that did not agree with me -  I just keep trying and have finally settled on Sports Research. I take NAKA Women's Multi full spectrum, and have not felt sick after taking 2 capsules per day -  it is a Canadian company. I buy both from Amazon. I wish you well in your searching, I know how discouraging it all is. Florence.

highly unlikely  NOTHING and I mean NOTHING else has ever caused me these kinds of symptoms I have no problem with dates, they are a large part of my diet In fact, I eat a very high fiber, very high vegetable and bean diet and have for many years now. It's considered a whole foods plant based or plant forward diet (I do now eat some lean ground turkey but not much) I was off dairy for years but recently had to add back plain yogurt to meet calcium needs that I am not allowed to get from supplements (I have not had any problem with the yogurt)   I eat almost no processed foods. I don't eat out. almost everything I eat, I cook myself I am going to keep a food diary but to be honest, I already know that it's wheat products and also barley that are the problem, which is why I gradually stopped eating and buying them. When I was eating them, like back in early 2024, when I was in the middle of moving and ate out (always had bread or toast or rolls or a sub or pizza) I felt terrible but at that time was so busy and exhausted that I never stopped to think it was the food. Once I was in my new place, I continued to have bread from time to time and had such horrible joint pain that I was preparing for 2 total knee replacements as well as one hip! The surgery could not go forward as I was (and still am) actively losing calcium from my bones. That problem has yet to be properly diagnosed and treated   anyway over time I realized that I felt better when I stopped eating bread. Back at least 3 yrs ago I noticed that regular pasta made me sick so I switched to brown rice pasta and even though it costs a lot more, I really like it.   so gradually I just stopped buying and eating foods with gluten. I stopped getting raisin bran when I was constipated because it made me bloated and it didn't help the constipation any more (used to be a sure bet that it would in the past)   I made cookies and brownies using beans and rolled oats and dates and tahini and I LOVE them and have zero issues eating those I eat 1 or more cans of beans per day easily can eat a pound of broccoli - no problem! Brussels sprouts the same thing.   so yeh it's bread and related foods that are clearly the problem  there is zero doubt in my mind
