I'm actually Bev's husband (nobody tell her)

As for not being a Celiac...do I need to change my Avatar back to flaming *ssman?

oh you are Bev's long-lost sibling AND you're married to her? well that is really scary and shouldn't you be living in Appalachia? :D

now STOP WRITING FUNNY THINGS and distracting me because I"ve got sod to lay and none of those miscreant men have shown up that Richard allegedly sent. harumph!:lol:

Whatever was wrong with that counsellor for not bringing it up? How did they ever get their certificate? That is number one in counselling because money problems never out rank bowel movements. Blasphemy I tell you.

I'm not sure that Presbyterian ministers are allowed to say poop. I know that Baptists can't. :P (no hate mail from any Baptists in the audience please)

Sounds like Alan had a nice birthday--what did you all do to celebrate?

Patti,We just had some family over- nothing big. Everyone made an effort though by bringing a G.F (highly expensive) goodies too. :)

Nikki - I don't even think I"ve acknowledged the fact that your son is Celiac!! Wow! I don't know what to say here ....is it congratulations, or, I'm sorry? But the cake looks really good! Oh, and I am not sure about this either, but did something happen to your kitty?

Susan, I think it would be congrats for my son ! (mixed with a slight wistful feeling for all the 'normal' foods he will never have again <_< )

My kitty is holding on-but on borrowed time. The vet discovered he has a heart condition and is in heart failure....but he's comfortable and living out his twilight years in extreme luxury of fine bedding and food!!

Hope you have satisfied your 'what would happen?...' urges and normal sensibility has resumed :)

Nikki- Cake gorgeous! Send piece stat!

Bev,not sure said cake would travel too well as it tends to..um..disintigrate into a thousand pieces when touched by human hand  (why does G.F cake and bread do that?)

My sister and I brawled also. One time she got her braces hooked on a the couch and couldn't get loose! :P I seem to remember getting in a heap of trouble for that

:lol: Richard, that reminds me of a fight me and my brother got into where I lost a tooth.

My brother rammed my head onto the dining room table (it was wood) and as I lifted my head my tooth remained stuck in the table without it's owner!

Boy was he in trouble- and I milked it for all it was worth (it didn't actually hurt as the tooth was loose anyway, but I never told him that! )

 So true Nikki

And yet we scarf it all up, so excited just to have bread, or cake, or rolls! It's the gluten-free mentality, we think, "who cares if it fall apart, crumbling into a million tiny pieces, as long as it tastes good....."

Sorry to break up all the fun and hilarity, but I just came from a doctor's appointment and am supremely frustrated. I had surgery (to repair a hernia and torn muscle) 5 weeks ago and still am not anywhere near 100%. She told me I still have to be on lifting restriction (very hard, since I'm a PE teacher) and to take it easy. I have 4 kids, work 2-1/2 days a week, have a puppy to take care of and I usually go walking, running or bike riding almost every day. I'm SICK, SICK, SICK of taking it easy. I want to be better NOW! My older brother, who's overweight (way more than I am), doesn't ever exercise, and eats garbage had a similar surgery and was fine like 2 weeks later.

So, I went to Trader Joe's on the way home, saw "Dark chocolate covered cherries" and bought a carton. I don't usually eat much sugar, but I ate about a quarter of them without even looking at the ingredients. I still haven't looked - too late now anyway. It's probably just the sugar, but I have a whopper of a stomach ache and am now even more frustrated. And now I'll probably gain another pound because weight sticks to me when I just smell food and when I can't exercise I start to balloon.

Okay, thanks for letting me vent. Feel free to go on with fun and joking.

Liz, sorry you're down ... it sucks, and it's not fair. The whole thing. The celiac, and everything else you're dealing with. The stomach ache isn't fair either. Oh, man, I'd LOVE a piece of chocolate!!!!!!

Nikki,

That cake looks real good, glad it tasted good as well.

Hi to everyone else. I forget if I wanted to say anything about anything. One of THOSE days again with my daughter.

Not as much as you would think. Does look that way. Once Adam said something, I kicked him out of bed. Morgan was sleeping in the room below us and scolded me about it in the morning!!! :o:blink::ph34r: I told her it was nothing, I kicked him onto the floor, that was it!!! She thought it was a CYA statement ... she'll always think it was ...

Hernia's suck. Sorry you're still having to take it easy.

I think we should all take a minute in the happy-helmet.

That was a nice break from helping my daughter with math. She liked it, too. Thank goodness it was clean!!! See Andrea, doesn't really matter if you home school or not, you still spend a couple hours a day sitting and doing school work with the kids.

Lonewolf - sorry about the hernia :(

My friends hubby had his done a couple of months ago and it's popped (ouch!) and so has to have it done again.I know how much it got him down.

...Hope you tried the 'happy helmet'

:D:D My son in particular loved it!!!

Andrea - all the cake is gone now so it was a hit!!!

I love your childhood kitty!!

Serious question for you all.

Anybody know anything about bladder/kidney infections? :( I ask because Olivia, my 4 yo, ran a pretty good fever last night(gone this A.M.), wet herself on the way to the bathroom (he has been potty trained for a looong time) and she has been saying "my hips hurt" (and pointing to a spot about 1/2 way between armpits and hips on her side). She hasn't complained of any discomfort when urinating, and her pee looked ok (not cloudy or dark) this A.M., no itching or anything like that. We are going to the doctor's this A.M., but I was wondering if anybody insight or suggestions.

Thanks - the serious goofball :)

Well, in my experience, if was a UTI (urinary tract infection), it would really hurt/sting for her to pee. Where she point to in regards to the pain is important. Is it both sides? Front or back?

both sides, right about the 2nd-3rd rib from bottom

Are her bm's okay? If it was bladder, as I said, usually it would really sting to go pee. Kidneys usually hurt more along the back than the front.

@Jane02, I hear you about the kale and collard greens.  I don't do dairy and must eat green leafies, too, to get sufficient calcium.  I must be very careful because some calcium supplements are made from ground up crustacean shells.  When I was deficient in Vitamin D, I took high doses of Vitamin D to correct the deficiency quickly.  This is safe and nontoxic.  Vitamin D level should be above 70 nmol/L.  Lifeguards and indigenous Pacific Islanders typically have levels between 80-100 nmol/L.   Levels lower than this are based on amount needed to prevent disease like rickets and osteomalacia. We need more thiamine when we're physically ill, emotionally and mentally stressed, and if we exercise like an athlete or laborer.  We need more thiamine if we eat a diet high in simple carbohydrates.  For every 500 kcal of carbohydrates, we need 500-1000 mg more of thiamine to process the carbs into energy.  If there's insufficient thiamine the carbs get stored as fat.  Again, recommended levels set for thiamine are based on minimum amounts needed to prevent disease.  This is often not adequate for optimum health, nor sufficient for people with absorption problems such as Celiac disease.  Gluten free processed foods are not enriched with vitamins like their gluten containing counterparts.  Adding a B Complex and additional thiamine improves health for Celiacs.  Thiamine is safe and nontoxic even in high doses.  Thiamine helps the mitochondria in cells to function.  Thiamine interacts with each of the other B vitamins.  They are all water soluble and easily excreted if not needed. Interesting Reading: Clinical trial: B vitamins improve health in patients with coeliac disease living on a gluten-free diet https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/19154566/ Safety and effectiveness of vitamin D mega-dose: A systematic review https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34857184/ High dose dietary vitamin D allocates surplus calories to muscle and growth instead of fat via modulation of myostatin and leptin signaling https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/38766160/ Safety of High-Dose Vitamin D Supplementation: Secondary Analysis of a Randomized Controlled Trial https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31746327/ Vitamins and Celiac Disease: Beyond Vitamin D https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11857425/ Investigating the therapeutic potential of tryptophan and vitamin A in modulating immune responses in celiac disease: an experimental study https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/40178602/ Investigating the Impact of Vitamin A and Amino Acids on Immune Responses in Celiac Disease Patients https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10814138/

Thank you so much @knitty kitty for this insightful information! I would have never considered fractionated coconut oil to be a potential source of GI upset. I will consider all the info you shared. Very interesting about the Thiamine deficiency.  I've tracked daily averages of my intake in a nutrition software. The only nutrient I can't consistently meet from my diet is vitamin D. Calcium is a hit and miss as I rely on vegetables, dark leafy greens as a major source, for my calcium intake. I'm able to meet it when I either eat or juice a bundle of kale or collard greens daily haha. My thiamine intake is roughly 120% of my needs, although I do recognize that I may not be absorbing all of these nutrients consistently with intermittent unintentional exposures to gluten.  My vitamin A intake is roughly 900% (~6400 mcg/d) of my needs as I eat a lot of sweet potato, although since it's plant-derived vitamin A (beta-carotene) apparently it's not likely to cause toxicity.  Thanks again!

Hello, @Jane02,  I take Naturewise D 3.  It contains olive oil.   Some Vitamin D supplements, like D Drops, are made with fractionated coconut oil which can cause digestive upsets.  Fractionated coconut oil is not the same as coconut oil used for cooking.  Fractionated coconut oil has been treated for longer shelf life, so it won't go bad in the jar, and thus may be irritating to the digestive system. I avoid supplements made with soy because many people with Celiac Disease also react to soy.  Mixed tocopherols, an ingredient in Thornes Vitamin D, may be sourced from soy oil.  Kirkland's has soy on its ingredient list. I avoid things that might contain or be exposed to crustaceans, like Metagenics says on its label.  I have a crustacean/shellfish/fish allergy.  I like Life Extension Bioactive Complete B Complex.  I take additional Thiamine B 1 in the form Benfotiamine which helps the intestines heal, Life Extension MegaBenfotiamine. Thiamine is needed to activate Vitamin D.   Low thiamine can make one feel like they are getting glutened after a meal containing lots of simple carbohydrates like white rice, or processed gluten free foods like cookies and pasta.   It's rare to have a single vitamin deficiency.  The water soluble B Complex vitamins should be supplemented together with additional Thiamine in the form Benfotiamine and Thiamine TTFD (tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide) to correct subclinical deficiencies that don't show up on blood tests.  These are subclinical deficiencies within organs and tissues.  Blood is a transportation system.  The body will deplete tissues and organs in order to keep a supply of thiamine in the bloodstream going to the brain and heart.   If you're low in Vitamin D, you may well be low in other fat soluble vitamins like Vitamin A and Vitamin K. Have you seen a dietician?

I do not know this, but since they are labelled gluten-free, and are not really a product that could easily be contaminated when making them (there would be not flour in the air of such a facility, for example), I don't really see contamination as something to be concerned about for this type of product.
