Dental Problems

I am a newbie, and I suspect that I have celiac, although my blood test show to the contrary. I don't eat very much (if any) bread, or past so my tests may not be accurate.

Does anyone on this board have problems with their teeth (decay), and a high c-reactive protein?

Also, I started menopuse about the age of 41.

Has anyone had similar experiences?

Thank you in advance!

ps. my son had dermatitus in the diaper area when he was a baby, and cutting out wheat and guten helped a lot (Did this on my own). No one mentioned celiac at all (pre-internet days)

Yes I have a problem with decay on one of my teeth. I know it is not my whole dental structure but I do know it is from the malabsoprtion of calcium.

I have lost most of my teeth due to malabnsorption problems from the celiac. My teeth literally crumble. When I was diagnosed 19 years ago they said I was deficent in vitamin A and D. I was told you need those vitamins to mantain the enamel on your teeth. I may have been deficent in others I'm not sure what all they checked back then.

Thank you for your responses. My teeth, also, are crumbling out of my mouth. Instead of all the dental work I've had. It would have been nice if I could have stopped the decay, rather than fix each tooth, one by one.

Thank you again!

my teeth are crumbling too. I have a mouth full of crowns. A side note: My mouth is worth more than my car!!!:wacko:

I never thought that my problems with my teeth were related to gluten. But, they could be. I broke one tooth off near the gum line and a large hole was broken out of another. Now that I'm gluten free maybe that will help.

I have lost more than 10 teeth in less than 5 years and my teeth that are left, break and crumble constantly.

In addition to my gluten intolerance, I have several autoimmune diseases. One of the big problems I have is severe vitamin d deficiency. I have to take 50,000 units 1 time per week. This is prescription dose.

Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium, if you are lacking in vitamin D, the body cannot absorb calcium.

In addition to taking the vitamin d, I also have to take calcium supplements. Your vitamin d levels can be checked with a blood test.

It has made a difference with my dental checkups also.

I don't have much decay--only one filling in my whole mouth.

But, my teeth crack, break and chip quite a bit. I've had the front ones bonded due to a chip (very attractive  ), and a moler repaired. There's another molar that has the corner broken off--I'll probably have to deal with that one next. <_< I've had another molar actually break in half while chewing--that was painful!

My teeth are all cracking out of my head. First they root canal them 3 times and then decide they are cracked and infected. Then they pull it then they put bridge around it. Then the next tooth goes bad and they have to cut off the bridge. Jaw/tooth pain is worse than labor. I don't eat beef or pork, but I have a cow bone in my jaw from when they reconstructed it because it was so deteriorated from infections. Lost 7 in the past few years including my wisdom teeth. I am only 32 and will need dentures pretty soon. Never knew why. Hmm...

I am in the process of fighting a severe infection in one of my teeth. It was root canaled, the infection came back. the dentist opened it back up and cleaned it again. The infection is now back for the third time! Now I have to have some sort of oral surgery where they cut open my gum and scrape the jaw bone. This really sucks!

I am also in the process of getting partial dentures. Sometimes I wonder if I would be better off just getting the remainders pulled and go for the full blown dentures. I am about to turn 32 and they say I'm too young to get dentures yet. I guess your jaw bone deteriorates if you have no teeth.

From my experience, I would not suggest that surgery. Just have it pulled. If it is cracked, it will always allow bacteria in no matter what they do to it. My grandfather lost all teeth before age 40. I plan on having implants - they don't crack and allow bacteria in.

My dentist is awesome. He looks at me like I am outside the norm but accepts that I have problems in my mouth and system - not in my head.

I think that now I have systemic candida setting off the celiac. I am sure you are on lots of Clindamycin - I think this broad spectrum created the candida problem. Take LOTS of the the things in ThreeLac - I feel like I am on death's door from this problem.

I might suggest you consider buckwheat groats. https://www.amazon.com/Anthonys-Organic-Hulled-Buckwheat-Groats/dp/B0D15QDVW7/ref=sr_1_4_pp?crid=GOFG11A8ZUMU&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.bk-hCrXgLpHqKS8QJnfKJLKbKzm2BS9tIFv3P9HjJ5swL1-02C3V819UZ845_kAwnxTUM8Qa69hKl0DfHAucO827k_rh7ZclIOPtAA9KjvEEYtaeUV06FJQyCoi5dwcfXRt8dx3cJ6ctEn2VIPaaFd0nOye2TkASgSRtdtKgvXEEXknFVYURBjXen1Nc7EtAlJyJbU8EhB89ElCGFPRavEQkTFHv9V2Zh1EMAPRno7UajBpLCQ-1JfC5jKUyzfgsf7jN5L6yfZSgjhnwEbg6KKwWrKeghga8W_CAhEEw9N0.eDBrhYWsjgEFud6ZE03iun0-AEaGfNS1q4ILLjZz7Fs&dib_tag=se&keywords=buckwheat%2Bgroats&qid=1769980587&s=grocery&sprefix=buchwheat%2Bgroats%2Cgrocery%2C249&sr=1-4&th=1 Takes about 10 minutes to cook. Incidentally, I don't like quinoa either. Reminds me and smells to me like wet grass seed. When its not washed before cooking it makes me ill because of saponins in the seed coat. Yes, it can be difficult to get much dietary calcium without dairy. But in many cases, it's not the amount of calcium in the diet that is the problem but the poor uptake of it. And too much calcium supplementation can interfere with the absorption of vitamins and minerals in general because it raises gut pH.

What you’re describing really does not read like typical IBS-D. The dramatic, rapid normalization of stool frequency and form after removing wheat, along with improved tolerance of legumes and plant foods, is a classic pattern seen in gluten-driven disease rather than functional IBS. IBS usually worsens with fiber and beans, not improves. The fact that you carry HLA-DQ2.2 means celiac disease is absolutely possible, even if it’s less common than DQ2.5, and many people with DQ2.2 present later and are under-diagnosed. Your hesitation to reintroduce gluten is completely understandable — quality of life matters — and many people in your position choose to remain strictly gluten-free and treat it as medically necessary even without formal biopsy confirmation. If and when you’re ready, a physician can help you weigh options like limited gluten challenge, serology history, or documentation as “probable celiac.” What’s clear is that this wasn’t just random IBS — you identified the trigger, and your body has been very consistent in its response.

oh that's interesting... it's hard to say for sure but it has *seemed* like oats might be causing me some vague issues in the past few months. It's odd that I never really connect specific symptoms to foods, it's more of an all over feeling of unwellness after  eating them.  If it happens a few times after eating the same foods- I cut back or avoid them. for this reason I avoid dairy and eggs.  So far this has worked well for me.  oh, I have some of Bob's Red Mill Mighty Tasty Hot cereal and I love it! it's hard to find but I will be looking for more.  for the next few weeks I'm going to be concentrating on whole fresh fruits and veggies and beans and nuts and seeds. I'll have to find out if grains are truly necessary in our diet. I buy brown rice pasta but only eat that maybe once a month at most. Never liked quinoa. And all the other exotic sounding grains seem to be time consuming to prepare. Something to look at later. I love beans and to me they provide the heft and calories that make me feel full for a lot longer than a big bowl of broccoli or other veggies. I can't even tolerate the plant milks right now.  I have reached out to the endo for guidance regarding calcium intake - she wants me to consume 1000mgs from food daily and I'm not able to get to more than 600mgs right now.  not supposed to use a supplement until after my next round of testing for hyperparathyroidism.   thanks again- you seem to know quite a bit about celiac.

Welcome to the celiac.com community, @SilkieFairy! You could also have NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity) as opposed to celiac disease. They share many of the same symptoms, especially the GI ones. There is no test for NCGS. Celiac disease must first be ruled out.
