Colonscopy Prep Questions Need Help Asap

I AM SCHEDULED FOR A COLONSCOPY/UPPER ENDOSCOPY ON THURSDAY. I AM REFUSING TO DO THE GOLITELY PREP AS I GET BLOATED FROM INGESTING EVEN SMALL AMOUNTS OF LIQUID.

I HAVE OPTED TO DO THE FLEET PHOSOPHODA GINGER LEMON FLAVORED AS IT IS A LOT LESS LIQUID(WITHOUT THE CONSENT OF MY DOCTOR). HAS ANYONE EVER HEARD OF ANY ADVERSE REACTIONS TO IT? I FIGURE IT WOULDN'T BE SOLD IN THE PHARMACY IF IT WAS TOO DANGEROUS TO USE.

ALSO, AT WHAT TIME DID YOU START IT AND HOW MUCH WITH EACH DOSE?

THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR HELP. I SO DESPERATLY WANT TO FIND OUT WHAT'S WRONG WITH ME BUT I AM SO SCARED.

I am not sure why you don't want to consume liquids to flush out your system. I suppose it does not matter what you flush with as long as it is clear and clean.

I am not up on the procedure that you have chosen, but I would recommend that you choose a time that will flush you clean by the time of your proceedure.

If the GI doc can't have a full view, it will hinder your exam.

Good luck and I hope you have some answers.

Don't be scared I did it last night and this morning, had the COLONSCOPY/UPPER ENDOSCOPY done at 10 am this morning...and it was a piece of cake..didn't feel or know a thing, they had me totally out...and the stuff you have to drink is not bad at all...I drank the big bottle of stuff at 6 pm last night and then at 7 pm drank one of the little bottles...then at 6 am had another of the little bottles of stuff...you need to be really cleaned out or they might just not even do it.....you need that big bottle of Golightly first or it won't be enough...you have to do what they tell you to do. I had to drink a 10 oz bottle of Magnesium Citrate Oral Solution..I assume it is the same as the Golighty..I thought it tasted pretty good even....the little bottle of stuff are alot worse !!!!

I have heard some people have better luck using Picosalax (it's much less fluid...and is supposed to taste better.) Talk to your dr to see if she will accept you using it instead of the colyte/golytely prep. I'd hate to see you turned down for the procedure at the last minute if the dr feels you did not prep properly.

you need to flush clean, and without the liquid you might not get it all out. I did the osmo prep- which allowed me to drink every 15 minutes whatever liquid i wanted with four tabs of osmoprep. it was hard but i just did it. your gonna feel like crap- no matter what prep you do in my opinion. i have done three bowel preps. the osmo prep was the easiest as far as consumption but they all had the same effect....

Kara, a co-worker and I both had this procedure last week (not for celiac reasons) and both did the Fleet thing. It is like drinking liquid salt. It is supposed to start working in 30 minutes to two hours, and then six hours after the first one you take a second one. In my friend's case, it worked in 30 minutes; in mine, it took twelve hours from the first bottle (so I was up all night). I really think you need to follow what the dr. told you or get his/her blessing on a change. The prep is a hard thing to go through to then have the procedure cancelled.

Hi Kara,

My husband did the Phospho-soda. I mixed it for him with gingerale, and I believe (if I remember correctly) he took some every 20 minutes. He also had to take Dulcolax before bed that night,

As for the exact directions, didn't your doctor give you a printed sheet with exactly what they want you to do? If you're not completely cleaned out, they may not be able to complete the procedure. This happened to the man who was there right before my husband. The doctor and nurses were not happy with him at all....

I did the "Golightly" (which is a misnomer :o ). That seemed a lot more difficult and time consuming than the Phospho.

Kara -

I've had a couple of colonoscopies. I used the gallon jug the first time and that wasn't a lot of fun. The second time, I used prescription pills. I don't recall what they were called, but I remember I had to take about 3 dozen pills over 2 to 3 hours. The pills are bigger than vitamins, so they may be difficult for you to swallow. I also remember that I had to drink about 8 ounces of water with each dose, so you would still need to drink a lot of fluid. Overall, though, I would highly recommend the pills over the jug.

Don't worry about the test. I had to get my teeth cleaned today and that was much more uncomfortable that the colonscopy!

Well..... I gave up on the colonscopy prep. Couldn't do it. I did have the upper endoscopy done. It was a freaking nightmare. I can remember the whole thing. I gagged and dry heaved and I even think puked the whole time. I have a horrible sore throat still and I had it done at 8am this morning. My doctor said that everything looked normal. He did do some biopsies. It's sad that I wish something was wrong just so that I had an answer. Thanks for asking me how it went.

i know- i felt the same way. its awful feeling terrble with no answer and no end in sight. its not that you want this disease, its that you want an answer so that you can feel better NOW. My first endoscopy I didn't fall out either. It was awful. I didn't gag that much though- they sprayed the back of my throat twice so i wouldn't keep gagging...that helped then pushed something in my iv that helped. i fell a sleep right after they said all done. I woke up at home. don't remember a thing in between. I hope your throat feels better, drink something warm.

Even if the biopsy comes back negative- i would try the diet just to see how you feel if you haven't already. Give it a few months and see....Did you have positive blood test?

it sounds like they did not give you enough medication---you should not have been that 'awake' at all. I have had four and have never been that awake. they are supposed to sedate you which 'puts you to sleep'.

i'm sorry that you had such a bad experience!!!!!!! :(

I'm sorry you had that experience. It sounds like they didn't give you much (if any) sedative. I had mine done two weeks ago, and was pretty much knocked out from the sedative (fell asleep quickly and don't remember a thing...like I was in a time warp!) Take care of yourself...I hope your throat feels better quickly, and that you get some concrete answers from your test.

All of my blood tests have been negative. My B12 and vitamin A are both low. I just feel deep down that wheat is my problem. I have so many of the symptoms, it's almost frightening. I have decided that no matter what the biopsies say, I am going to try my hardest to go gluten free. Convincing my husband is another thing. He just thinks that I am full of crap. (not literally :P ) Last night I seperated everything in the cupboard, putting all things containing wheat at the bottom. Eventually I don't want any gluten in the house, as I have a little problem with will power.

Thanks for all of the kind words.

Hi. Kara. I was wondering if you were ever checked for pernicious anemia? With pernicious anemia you have a B12 deficiency caused by the gastric mucosa(in the stomach) not secreting intrinsic factor. So vitamin B12 cannot be absorbed. Pernicious anemia is diagnosed with:

~low serum B12 levels

~Symptoms: sore tongue, anorexia, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and neuro changes

~Positive Shilling Test

If your doctor did not perform the Schilling Test then he did not rule this out.

If you hadn't been diagnosed with anything I hope this helps!

This treatment looks promising. Its aim is to provoke immune tolerance of gluten, possibly curing the disease. It passed the phase 2 trial with flying colours, and I came across a post on Reddit by one of the study volunteers. Apparently, the results were good enough that the company is applying for fast track approval.  Anokion Announces Positive Symptom Data from its Phase 2 Trial Evaluating KAN-101 for the Treatment of Celiac Disease https://www.reddit.com/r/Celiac/comments/1krx2wh/kan_101_trial_put_on_hold/

Hi everyone  This has been a crazy year so far... How many people actually get entire sensory overload from gluten or something similar ?  My jaw is going nuts ..and that nerve is affecting my upper back and so on ...  Bones even hurt.  Brain fog. Etc  I had eggs seemed fine.   Then my aid cooked a chicken stir fry in the microwave because my food order shorted a couple key items .   I was so hungry but I noticed light breading and some ingredients with SOY !!! Why are we suffering with soy ? This triggered a sensitivity to bananas and gluten-free yogurt it seems like it's a cycle that it goes on.  The tiniest amount of something gets me I'm guessing the tiny bit of breading that I took one tiny nibble of ...yikes ..im cringing from it .. Feels like my stomach is going to explode yet still very hungry 😔  How long does this last?! Thank you so much

I have had orthodontic work done. The 3M invisalign material was no problem. BUT my retainers are another matter. They seemed okay for a few months. Now, however, they cause a burning sensation on my tongue, gums and insides of my lips. The burning sensation is now spreading to my throat. I notice it when I breathe. This is annoying and interferes with my enjoyment of eating. I am visiting with my provider tomorrow. We'll see where this goes from here.
