Arghh ... Some Docs, What Nerve!

OK I have to share you my horror story from today. Its bugging me so much I think i'll just cry as I type it. Last night my stomach caught me just randomly. And I'm not talking some bad pains, I'm talking MAJOR PAINS--The worst I have been in pain this whole past year. I couldnt sleep. And I threw up (which has NEVER come along with the pains before). It felt like someone like my right side on fire and forgot to turn off the lighter. I tried taking Buscopan (i took 4 in like a 3 hour span) and it did nothing to help.

This morning I called home and dad came in earlier before he had to start work and took me to the hospital here in Yorkton.

I waited almost THREE HOURS to even see the doctor, and the dude had some nerve!!! He wouldnt test me (just a basic urine sample), all he did was touch my stomach in different places and say "does it hurt here". He said he has no clue what it is and to go see my family doc since he knows the situation..<_<:( *cries*

My mom called the hospital and gave them...heck (using a nice word here)...and so they're supposed to call her back once the lady's out of the meeting to see if they'll take me back in again and actually check for something. If not, she'll drive here to pick me up and take me to Canora hospital.

What if this IS something serious? I have a friend in nutrion/health, and shes worried that maybe it could even be appendicitis. And yet these guys wont help??

I'm not going to school...my classmates will kill me, my teachers will kill me, but if I go to Canora i'll make sure I get a note...if I cant even sit in a chair, or can only lie flat, HOW could I possibly sit in a hard chair for 6 hours in class and then try to focus??

Sorry this is a rant, but I needed to get it out :( . I'll keep this updated

Lisa,

I'm very worried about you. It could be appendicitis, or have you ever been checked for ovarian cysts? They can be as painful as you describe (believe me!) A pelvic ultrasound would be a good idea, I think.

Please let us know how you are, when you can. I'll be thinking about you :)

Lisa,

I'm so sorry you're having this much trouble. I hope you can get in to see a competent doctor SOON! Is it actually your stomach or cramping type pain? I had a twisted ovary once and it hurt so bad I was vomiting. It can be excruciating. I hope you figure out what's wrong and get better fast.

Check in my signautre ;) I was checked for ovarian cysts with a pelvic ultrasound this fall.Oh and mom's on her way for me now. Yorkton hospital never called back, and she called Canora hospital and they said to bring me in. Clearly small towns aren't always a bad thing...

Oh and lonewolf, it started off with cramps thru my whole stomach and then in no time at all stayed with the usual low right side.

Yes, I see that now  Don't mind me, I'm a little slow on the uptake  I'm glad that your mom was able to get you in--they really need to figure this out for you.

Lisa:

How awful to be in pain like that.

I was thinking that it may be a perforated ulcer. When stomach acid seeps into your body, it can be very painful.

I am glad that you mom is there with you. Please let us know how you are doing.

Thinking about you.

that is really horrid. I hope that the other hospital is able to help you, and you get some answers!

Lisa, I am sorry you're in so much pain, and that the doctor at the hospital is a non-caring jerk. The same sort of thing happened to me a year and a half ago. I went to the hospital, thinking I was having a heart attack. I was in excruciating pain. After five hours, the doctor told me that my heart was fine, that it was 'only' severe stomach and bowel cramps. And that there was nothing wrong with me, and they sent me home. I was very upset.

I hope they can figure out what is wrong with you, and you feel better soon.

I had to wait a couple hours in Canora too, but I took a textbook with me so did some highlighting/reading...

The nurse gave me a pain killer shot, in the arm I chose. and MY GOD the pain. I still cant feel my right arm, its seriously a good thing I'm a lefty. Its temporary relief at least. And apparently my blood pressure was really high (could you blame me tho?!)

When the doc showed up he felt my stomach, asked what problems I've been having...and then he sat there thinking, he was like "what can I do to help you...." So he gave me a prescription for 3 things...Apo-Metronidazole, PMS-Mefenamic Acid, and Apo-Ciproflux...I know i've been on the Cipro before.

Oh and his first question to me was "Have you been checked for Ulcerative Colitis??"

I asked him if I could get him to make a note for the school so they know i was at a doc and he said "that's not a problem".

Blah Im gonna eat a little more and do a little lying down. i have a headache, i'm sore and just...i dont know. I suddenly can't wait for my 3 scopes :(

Did they consider gall bladder disease ? It is usually painful in the right upper abdomen, but not always! It is typically cramping in nature with a build up of pain and then easing. If a stone was present and got lodged, it would be very intense pain, and usually with vomiting. Stones or sludge can move in and out of the duct, triggering painful spasms. Other areas where the pain is felt from gall bladder is the right shoulder and between the shoulder blades. You look young to have gall bladder problems, but it definitely happens.....and I think a little more common in celiacs. Also a non-functioning gall bladder can do this, too. An ultrasound of the abdomen or nuclear imaging of the gall bladder(HIDA scan) might be in order. Are you any better tonight?

I'm so sorry you had such an awful day. Your parents sound like they were great. It's always nice to have someone with you when you have to go through these things. When are your scopes again? It's still a couple months away isn't it?

Hugs,

Nancy

Just want to mention that a sonogram a few months ago which did not show ovarian cysts cannot prevent a new ovarian cyst from popping up. Your body changes every 28 days and a week after the sonogram, in theory, you could have started developing a cyst that would by now enlarge itself making your abdomen painful. I get them often these days, they go down or resolve themselves, only to have a new one 6 months later.

Remind me Lisa, have you been checked for UC???

Hope you're feeling a bit more comfortable now. :)

Yes I believe I have...actually I assume so anyways. When I had that colonoscopy in fall he checked my entire stomach, like the whole intestines and found nothing. But if he took biopsies I am not sure exactly what he took FOR. Most docs have just assumed already that its one of the 2 other IBDs just gotta find proof.

And to answer other questions, they ruled out gallbladder a few times before (i had even asked, they said no way it could be that). And I think they ruled out a cyst already, just because the pain never moves.

I'm feeling ok today, my arm is still sore from the shot. And i still have some nasty nausea but I didnt throw up again and my side is in no more pain than it usually is.

Thanks all you guys for caring/posting. It always makes me feel better.

P.S: I have a story of why I felt even worse last night, but I'm at school so I'll post it at home

2 years ago, I had real bad stomach pains like you mentioned and when I went to the ER and they did tests, I was found to have gastritis which is very painful. It came on all of a sudden and I was scared! I couldn't move I was in so much pain, Nothing took it away either. At the ER they made me drink this funny stuff and they gave me the IV pain meds, which eventually worked.

I'm sorry you hurt, it sucks!

Your appendix is on the right side of your body. I am currently experiencing impaction (from constipation). My left side hurts tremendously and I've thrown up. Being constipated makes you nauseous. My doc took an x-ray to confirm his theory and told me to take milk of magnesia right before I went to bed. My questions to you would be: when is the last time you had a big BM? Are the pains in the left or right side? If the pain is on the right side, ask for CT. A dr. shouldn't refuse your request, but if they do, ask for/go to another doc. Good luck.

my daughter had intermittent abdominal pain that always started near the belly button and then shifted to the lower right, nausea, fatigue "feeling crappy", this went on for 2 months - she would improve and seem to be fine, then it would happen again. One morning she started out the same way, then proceeded to vomit dark green fluid (bile), fever going up and down, had her to hospital by late afternoon..had her appendix out the next morning. She had fluid in her abdomen and "fecolith" impacting her appendix. Surgeon said this can cause intermittent stomach pain whcih gets worse each time.

In the ER, some of the nurses were patting my hand and saying, its likely the flu but we need to make sure its nothing else....within the hour they stopped saying that because she spiked to 41 Celcius, arched her head back and seized, then puked all over the bed.

If your symptoms change, you spike a fever, or begin vomiting bile...return to the hospital and you are within your rights to ask that appendicitis be ruled out.

There is much helpful 'truth' posted on this forum. Truths about Celiac Disease are based on scientific research and people's experience. Celiac disease is inherited. There are 2 main Celiac 'genes' but they are variations of one gene called HLa - DQ What is inherited when a person inherits one or both of the DQ2 or the DQ8 is a predisposition to develop celiac disease after exposure to a environmental trigger. These 2 versions of the DQ gene are useful in diagnosing  celiac disease but there are about 25 other genes that are known to influence celiac disease so this food intolerance is a multigenic autoimmune disease. So with so many genes involved and each person inheriting a different array of these other genes one person's symptoms may be different than another's symptoms.  so many of these other genes.  I don't think that much research on these other genes as yet. So first I wrote something that seem to tie together celiac disease and migraines.  Then you posted that you had migraines and since you went gluten free they only come back when you are glutened. Then Scott showed an article that reported no connection between migraines and celiac disease, Then Trents wrote that it was possible that celiacs had more migraines  and some believed there was a causal effect. You are each telling the truth as you know it or experienced it.

Another annoying thing about trying to figure this Celiac life out is reading all of the labels and considering every choice. I shop at Aldi every week and have been for years. I was just officially diagnosed Celiac a couple weeks ago this October after my endoscopy. I've been encouraged by my local Aldi in that they have a lot of gluten free products and clearly labeled foods. I usually buy Milagro corn tortillas because they are cheap and are certified. However, I bought a package of Aldi's Pueblo Lindo Yellow Corn Tortillas without looking too closely (I was assuming they were fine... assuming never gets us anywhere good lol) it doesn't list any wheat products and doesn't say it was processed in a facility with wheat. It has a label that it's lactose free (hello, what?? When has dairy ever been in a tortilla?) Just, ugh. If they can add that label then why can't they just say something is gluten free or not? I did eat some of the tortillas and didn't notice any symptoms but I'm just not sure if it's safe. So I'll probably have to let my family eat them and stick with Milagro. There is way too much uncertainty with this but I guess you just have to stick with the clearly labeled products? I am still learning!

Thank you all for sharing your experiences! And I am very thankful for that Thanksgiving article, Scott! I will look into it more as I plan my little dinner to bring with on the Holiday I'm also glad a lot of research has been done for Celiac. There's still a lot to learn and discover. And everyone has different symptoms. For me, I get a bad headache right away after eating gluten. Reoccurring migraines and visual disturbances were actually what got my PCP to order a Celiac Panel. I'm glad he did! I feel like when the inflammation hits my body it targets my head, gut, and lower back. I'm still figuring things out but that's what I've noticed after eating gluten! I have been eating gluten-free for almost two months now and haven't had such severe symptoms. I ate a couple accidents along the way but I'm doing a lot better
    • trents
@Mari, did you read that second article that Scott linked? It is the most recently date one. "Researchers comparing rates of headaches, including migraines, among celiac patients and a healthy control group showed that celiac subjects experienced higher rates of headaches than control subjects, with the greatest rates of migraines found in celiac women.  Additionally, celiacs had higher rates of migraine than control subjects, especially in women. In fact, four out of five women with celiac disease suffered from migraines, and without aura nearly three-quarters of the time."
    • Mari
As far as I know and I have made severalonline searches, celiac disease disease has not been recognized as a cause of migraines or any eye problems. What I wrote must have been confusing.
