Just Found Out Two Weeks Ago That I Have Celiac

LadyBoss Newbie

Hello Everyone,

This is my first time posting anything as I just came across this site a couple days ago. I have had too many different medical problems for the past 5 years with many hospital stays, last Jan 2006 was in hospital for entire month in ICU with a migraine, which shut down my system. My family doctor has run several tests over the years and nothing came back. My doctor refers me as a walking medical dictionary as he has not been able to figure out what was wrong with me. He even sent me to a psychitrist (sorry spelling) because he thought I was making it all up. Until recently. I am 30 yrs old with four children. I am 5' 7" and normally weigh about 180 lbs, but I work out everyday so it was a healthy 180. Now less than 1 year later, I weigh 115 lbs. I went from a size 15 jeans to a size 1. That is what prompted my doctor for me to get tested for celiac. That was two weeks ago. The problem that I am having is that I dont know what foods I can or cannot eat. I have tried to do reading but find it difficult and end up just giving up. I love all the foods that I now cant have and I am a VERY picky eater. No veggies no nothing. Everything I ate before is now on the list for me not to eat. It takes me about two hours every night just to try to decide what I am going to eat. I NEED Flavor. Now I am still losing weight even after not eating glueten for 2 weeks. I know its a short time, but now I feel like Im starving because I dont know what to eat and end up eating fruits. No one in my family understands this and does not help because they still offer me foods like I never even had the disease. Its aweful because I LOVE FOOD and its hard for me to still cook meals for my children and not be able to eat them myself. And when I do cook for them, I cook by taste, now I cant taste their food to make sure it taste ok and they are complaining. I cant afford new foods and I dont have enough knowledge to start creating my own foods. I tried to drink ensure and slim fast but threw up on the first drink. Like I said I am very picky eater. But now, Im afraid Im going to die of starvation. I have many people come and ask me if I am using drugs because I lost the weight so quick. I cant sit on butt because my tailbone sticks out. My ribcage is sunken in and Im very very very tired. I tried to start working out to gain muscle because I have nothing to my bones, but it seems to make me even more tired. I am confused, in pain, extreme sensivity to cold and tired all the time. I dont know how I can do this. I have no support. My childs dad left me the same day I found out about this. I give credit to everyone who has gone through this. I feel like I wont be here next year. My doctors tell me I am so underweight that if I dont eat right I will die from malnutrition. My teeth are fallling out, I get thrush every other week, my legs hurt and burn all the time. My fingers and toes goes numb. Its aweful and I hate that I have this. People treat me different when they see me now. I even had one person cry when she seen me. How can I go from being so healthy to so sick? How does everyone with Celiac do this? I have a full time job, exercise 4 times a week and have to raise 4 children on my own plus learn a whole new life. How do I gain my weight back to be healthly again with being an extremely picky eater????

I am SO sorry to hear about your situation. It took me 2 weeks to stop losing weight. The next two I stayed steady. In the last month I finally have put back on a lb and a half. I was lucky though - I had baby weight to lose - and they caught it before I was scary thin, like it sounds like you are. So I'm actually only about 2 lbs (I need to gain) from where I would like to be. So hopefully you'll notice a difference soon. Keep with it - it will get better!

As for food - I only feed my kids gluten at breakfast and lunch. I couldn't do the separate dinner thing. The only time I do is for pasta - and that's easy to separate. That way you can taste. I have found that I can make most of the casseroles, etc that I used to with just minor changes. For example - if you use cream of whatever soups - there's a brand called health valley that you can use.

I'm sorry to hear you don't like veggies - do you like peanuts? Trail mix is a great snack and has a lot of protein, calories and fat. I eat Fruity Pebbles or eggs for breakfast. I know how you feel about the money - it's a difficult adjustment in the beginning. It is tax deductible - or you can submit it through your cafeteria plan - hopefully that will help.

Thai food is almost always naturally gluten free -and that has flavor! I love white rice with bbq sauce or sweet and sour sauce (LaCHoy is gluten-free). I also eat a lot of potatos - cheap and delicious...

GOod luck - hope that you get through this difficult time quickly :)

Hi, and welcome to this board. I am sorry to hear how sick you are, and that you have found no support this far.

You will have no choice but stop being so picky. You need to eat, and you need to eat the things your body wants. Your kids need you.

Stop cooking food filled with gluten for your kids! Meat, vegetables, fruit, nuts are all naturally gluten-free. When you cook supper, cook it gluten-free, so you can all eat it together. You don't have the energy to cook two separate meals, and there is no good reason to. If it's pasta you crave, try gluten-free pasta, there are many choices out there. Tinkyada is one good brand, but I have tried others I like equally well. Your kids won't even know the difference.

If you make gravy, you can thicken it with corn starch, potato flour or light buckwheat flour (which is what I use, and my gravy is great, everybody loves it).

Also, it is necessary for your doctor to run some tests to find out what your deficiencies are (and believe me, you are likely deficient in several essential nutrients). The ones that come to mind are vitamin D, Calcium, magnesium, vitamin K, vitamin B12, ferritin (iron) and hemoglobin. Also, you should have a bone density scan, to see if you have osteoporosis (yes, even children with celiac disease can have it already).

You don't have the energy right now to work out, all it does it exhaust you more and make you lose more weight. At this point you should just do some gentle exercise, until you have gained some weight and have more energy.

Your fingers and toes going numb suggests a deficiency in B vitamins. It would be a good idea to start taking a good gluten-free multi-vitamin, plus a good vitamin B complex on top of that (and after finding out what else you're deficient in, there will be other things you should take).

Here is a link to a website that has a Celiac 'newbie survival kit'. Scroll down to the bottom to find the links to it. It will help you immensely in knowing which products are safe, and which ones aren't. Open Original Shared Link

Please determine to eat right. You may not be able to tolerate anything raw right now, and may have to cook all your vegetables and fruits (I had to for several months). Also, it is likely that you can't tolerate dairy at this point. You need to eliminate dairy as well, for at least six months (after which you can try it again to see if you can tolerate it).

If you're eating gluten-free bread, you need a new toaster, as it isn't possible to clean the old one well enough for it to be safe. You can't use a plastic colander you have used for gluteny pasta for gluten-free pasta, it isn't possible to clean those well enough, either.

Also, you need to go through all of your personal care products to eliminate everything containing gluten. That means shampoo, conditioner, soap, lotions, cosmetics, toothpaste etc. Look for things like wheat germ oil, barley extract, oat bran. Vitamin E is often made from wheat germ oil.

Please take care of yourself, you need to eat the foods your body wants!

That's great advice :) My dietary supplement vitamin has made a world of difference. This has been my best resource for figuring this whole thing out - the people here know ALOT and are great. For example, this morning I wanted to know if I could have the coffee I always loved to drink. I put in the word folgers in the top of the page and came to a blog by AmandasMommy I think? Wow, she has a huge list there! Check here first if you aren't sure :) It will make life easier...

It is nice to hear all the support in this forum. I was diagnosed last Thursday, and lets just say I have not been having a good week. lol

When I was diagnosed all my doctor said to me was that I cannot eat wheat. I had no idea what that entailed until going on the internet when I got home. I have walked out of the grocery store a few times in tears in the last few days as well as gone hungry because of not knowing what to cook, and not being able to afford to buy food that I can eat, as I am inbetween paydays. It is nice to be able to see what kinds of foods I can and cannot eat. I am in the same boat, for the past two years I have been very sick, I have gone from a size 10 to a size 2 in a year. My problem that I am also adjusting with is the fact I have to cook from scratch, something I do not enjoy doing. I got home yesterday at 4 pm from work and didn't eat till 6 becuase it took me so long to figure out what to eat and finally to cook it.

I was not aware that you had to check for vitamine deficiencies and was actually wondering if there are supplements that I should be taking. Also, my skin is very fragile lately, almost like it is tissue paper, one scratch turns into a cut very fast. I am wondering if this comes with the territory, or if anyone has Celiac and Diabetes (like me) and if this is because of the two together?

Tritty Rookie

The thing I ate the most when I was first diagnosed was a hamburger patty and a potato. Not a lot of flavor - but high in iron and filling. It was easy and not expensive...The other I eat alot is meatloaf and mashed potatos. And chicken and rice. I always have green beans or corn or some other easy veggie. Maybe you'll be able to get used to them :) And it's all stuff the little ones like....

Have you tried a crock pot? I have a lot more energy in the AM - am able to throw everything in there and then can just eat when I get home....

Good luck - keep us updated...

Slackermommy Rookie

I am so sorry you are having such a hard time. You got such great advice already, I don't have much to add...the idea of having hamburger with potatoes is a great idea..and for flavor A1 is gluten free.

I hope you find something you like to eat, and in the meantime you do have a responsibility to your children to get healthy and eat.

Good luck.

You might want to consider cooking mostly gluten-free for the kids, too. Most meals can be made gluten-free without too much effort. Do you have some favorite meals that you're having trouble finding substitutes for? We can help with that :) Because I eat pretty much what I used to eat with a few modifications.

For flavor, I add spices to everything. Plain spices are generally gluten-free. And I love Lowry's seasoning salt. Bullseye BBQ sauce is gluten-free. It takes a while to get the hang of which brands are gluten-free, but eventually you'll have your brands that you always go to. I used to buy the cheapest thing off the shelf, now I buy the safest brand off the shelf. Some generic brands I don't trust so I won't buy them.

Tritty Rookie

OK - so I just went to go and make myself an afternoon snack and then thought of you. I am eating celery and peanut butter. It's a good way to get a veggie in if you don't like them - celery has no taste - especially with pb on top. It's just a nice crunchy base and a great source of protein and fat! Make sure you have your own pb if you dip in and out of your kids with their real bread...Mine just says MOM really big on the outside...

I have to second the crock pot. I usually make at least one meal on sunday in it for lunches and then another meal mid-week. It makes those nights you work late or are just plain tired so much easier. I've been making extras the past few weeks of everything so I can just eat leftovers and am not left standing in the kitchen starving. Also, make a meal list for each week. Before you go to the store, write down what you're going to make for the next week so you know what you need to buy. It's such a huge adjustment but you will feel sooooooo much better soon. Start with the foods you do like and build on those. Check out local support groups by you also.

p.s. for those hamburger patties last night i added a little bit of Emeril's Steak Rub- holy moly were those suckers delicious!!!!

Hello and welcome

At the very least you should be taking a multi-vitamin. One-A-Day and Centrum I know are gluten free. Sorry, can't help on the skin thing, but I know a couple of people on the forum have diabetes as well, hopefully they will see this.

Other than that, the best advice I can offer you now is feel free to ask alot of questions here. Many knowledgeable people are ready/willing to help. We all know how overwhelming this can be at the start, but it does get easier.

Another idea for the preparing dinners topic, especially for LadyBoss, is to cook a few meals in advance and freeze them. This is especially helpful when cooking gluten and gluten-free for a family. That way you can fresh prepare one and just reheat the other. It also gives you the chance to "get ahead of the game" so to speak, as you can do it when you're felling half decent and have at least some energy.

Good luck

Phyllis28 Apprentice

In my house my husband and son have their gluten laden cereal for breakfast and gluten bread for sandwiches to make lunch with. They make their own breakfast and lunch.

If I am cooking, it is gluten free. There are many quick and easy gluten free dinners to make. I agree about the crock pot. Toss in meat or chicken, along with vegetables and pototoes in the morning and the meal is there when you get home. I also make a simple spegetti sauce which I serve over rice. Tacos served with rice and beans is another quick and easy meal. I do not use the packets with the premixed ingredients like "Taco Mix". I use bottles spices with only dried spices, no anticaking ingredients. You can find Italian spice and Mexican Spice. Dinner never includes any substitute for bread. There are lots of recipes on this website as well as other websites.

I make extra when I cook. I eat leftovers for lunch everyday.

I hope you are feeling better very soon.

Welcome to both LadyBoss and Cuervo :)

Some brands of things that I particularly love (and I have tried a large amount of gluten-free products, and thrown a ton of them out)

Tinkyada pasta (rice based). Comes in all size/shapes/etc. Find them at some grocery stores, health food stores, online. Use it in place of any pasta recipe (I make a delicious homemade mac and cheese that everyone loves, same with spaghetti, and pasta salad)

for lunch: lunchmeat (that is checked to be safe), cheese, and mayo, rolled up (like kids do).

Homemade chicken salad (chicken, mayo, celery, green onions, red onions, lemon juice, pepper, salt)

If you have a whole foods near you, check out their pizza crusts (gluten free bakehouse is their brand). They are amazing!

Many ice creams are gluten free. Edy's has a list on their website. Most are safe, other than the "obvious" things like "cookie dough"

Tort chips and salsa

I use a lot of McCormick's seasoning mixes, for tacos, enchiladas, fajitas, etc. I just use corn tortillas instead of wheat.

Here is a list of companies that will clearly list any gluten items. So, take this with you when you go shopping. Look on the back of the packaging to see who is manufacturing it. If it is on this list, you will know that if you don't see wheat, rye, barley, malt, oats, etc. listed clearly, then it doesn't contain it (i.e., you don't have to worry that it is listed in natural or artificial flavorings, etc). Further, the 2006 Food Labeling Law requires ALL companies to list any source of wheat clearly. So, if you see modified food starch, and it doesn't state wheat, then it is a safe starch (probably from corn).

Hope this will get you started a bit...feel free to ask away!

Laura

Did the link to the list of companies not work? That is one I would LOVE to see....

Thanks!!

It would probably help if I list the link, right? :)

This list includes a LOT of companies, including companies that own other brands. Unilever owns a ton of things, for example. This covers a really good array of companies, and it makes my life so much easier.

Dear LadyBoss,

I know exactly how you feel! I was put on every anti-depressant and anti-anxiety drug known to man. Doctors are such idiots. I have had to diagnose myself most of the time until I saw a holistic physician. She said Celiac has not always showed up in blood work, which we paid $300 for several years ago. I was accused of having eating disorders, among other things. I am losing my teeth as well right now. However, the digestive problems have decreased dramatically since going gluten free six months ago. And, I too, need flavor! I understand the misery so well. I have had my gallbladder out, Thyroid problems, anemia, migraines, unrelenting nausea and acid reflux (I was literally taking two Prilosecs a day and had to practically sit straight up to sleep) and severe depression.

Well, this is a great beginner's starter list you can have. This will help you out a ton! Go ahead and get your taste buds happy girlfriend!

1. There are a number of things in the regular grocery that are safe. Some things are labeled already. Wal-Mart's Great Value brand has numerous things you can eat.

2. For the love of God use Coupons on items you are allowed to eat. People can get them and print them out online even. Call some of the local stores and ask if they accept online coupons.

3. Check the ads online and in the newspaper. You would be surprised how many people do not do this.

4. Some items like rice flour and rice noodles are safe to buy at the Chinese or oriental market. The merchants are more than happy to help you if you cannot read the label.

Now, here is my list of great things to get you started:

Tip:

Go to the oriental market to get sweet rice flour (also called glutinous rice flour) for cookies.

Rice flour and rice noodles are also great to get from there. They are much cheaper than at other stores.

P.S. You may want to avoid dairy as well, as many of us cannot tolerate casein, a protein in dairy. Then, when you are feeling better, add it back and see how you do. If so, a great place to go to get some gluten-free, casein free chocolate is the chocolate emporium at www.choclat.com they have great cake mix. I bought some, and it is delicious, and turns out perfect. Don't worry, your gluten free angels are here for you anytime!

My heart goes out to you, for I have been through some frightening and horrible medical experiences that to this day I cannot speak about without breaking down in tears. I do not know if I will ever get rid of the emotionally excruciating pain I have experienced. Perhaps, we one day will all heal by sharing our horrors together.

Thank you!!!!!!!!

Hi Anneliz, and welcome to these boards. You will not likely get many responses here, as it is a thread LadyBoss started to get support for herself. It would be better if you copied what you said here, and pasted it again when starting your own topic.

For your height being 105 pounds would be underweight, not normal. 120 pounds was a good weight, and 117 is okay. Please don't try to get back to 105. At your age to be a size 0 is too thin, you expect only teenagers or pre-teens to have that size.

A lot of us can't tolerate alcohol, I am afraid you need to give up wine.

If you truly want to get back to feeling good, you seriously need to have cosmetics that are gluten-free. The risk of cross-contamination and eating small amounts by getting it on your hands, and then eating, or eating some of your lipstick (not possible to avoid) is too high.

Dear LadyBoss,

I forgot to mention that I believe you have an overgrowth of Candida Albicans in your system. Thrush is a very common sign of that. Have you been on a lot of antibiotics either recently or in the past? How about birth control, or steroids for asthma? I have been on them all. Candida can cause stomach trouble as well. I have to avoid yeast, because it irritates my Celiac symptoms further.

You have had four children, so that puts you at risk as well. This is a nasty thing that causes rashes, sugar cravings, weight loss or gain, depression, headaches, and has even been linked to Autism, ADD, ADHD, Schizophrenia, and Bipolar Disorder! I found its pathology so interesting, I had to write a paper on it! I will send you a copy if you like, just give me your e-mail address!

Sincerely,

NoGluGirl

P.S. I have not had a lot of support from my family either. Your husband just did not want to deal with it. He vowed to be with you in sickness and in health, and if he won't do that, screw him! You are better off without him anyway!

Dear Tritty,

OMG! LaChoy Sweet and Sour sauce is gluten-free? I am in heaven!

Dear Slackermommy,

A1 is gluten free too? Yay!

Dear babygirl1234,

Yeast Candida is actually a fungus. It is a full body fungal infections. It can make you very ill. It can play a role in bacterial dysbiosis. Bacterial dysbiosis is when the natural balance of the intestines is disturbed. In your intestines, there is good bacteria which helps your digestive ecosystem stay in proper function. Taking antibiotics, having a Candida overgrowth, catching a bug, or getting food poison all can cause bad bacteria to over populate. The good news is, taking probiotics can help. Probiotics are good bacteria that help eat up the bad stuff in your gut. These supplements are found just about everywhere. You can also get them from yogurt with live active cultures. Yoplait is safe for Celiacs. They clearly label any ingredients that contain gluten.

Yeast is a problem because it often requires many things to fix it. First, a diet that is extremely restricted. You cannot have alcohol, mushrooms, truffles, fermented foods like soy sauce, vinegar, fruit (for the first couple of weeks), yeast, refined carbohydrates, black tea, coffee, and must keep your carbohydrates between 60 and 80 grams a day. Taking anti-fungal medications, garlic, drinking taheebo tea, immunotherapy, and avoiding molds and other things that irritate symptoms all play a role in irradicating it. I hope that answered your question.

Sincerely,

Please don't try to get back to 105. At your age to be a size 0 is too thin, you expect only teenagers or pre-teens to have that size.

I was at 105 all through my 20's...I was healthy and not underweight (I'm 5'2). Noone was concerned about my weight....except me. Unlike most girls....for some reason I always wanted to be heavier. Even though I wanted to gain weight I never thought I was too thin for my age.

Finally when I got in my 30's I went up to 117-120. I thought this weight was good for me but others thought I was getting "chunky". Just when I was happy with my weight I got sick and ended up at 94 lbs. :(

This past year I've mostly stayed around 108-110. I cant gain anything more. Again, everyone thinks my weight is normal...I'm not too thin....but I would LOVE to get back to 120. :)

The point I'm trying to make is that I'm within normal weight for my height and I'm wearing size 0 pants....and I'm 35....definately not pre-teen.

I do think 105 is too thin for someone who is 5'7....but I'm not sure what age has to do with it??

Anneliz...I agree with UrsaMajor about NOT trying to get back to 105. That would be underweight for you. You should shoot for optimal health and a weight that is normal for your height will help you acheive this.

I would be very happy to be at 117 and I'm only 5'2.

Dear Rachel,

I actually got down to 84 pounds at one point when my parents had to take me up to I.U. Get this, the genius doctors up there could not figure out why I was losing weight after I had been on a liquid diet for four days! Can you say DUH??? If these were supposed to have been the best in the country, I would hate to see the worst! Then, after a colonoscopy, endoscopy, intercolisis, gastric emptying study, and tons of blood work, they decided I was just crazy!?

Now, nearly six years later, I cannot lose weight like I would like to! This is so unfair! Part of it, though, I found out I was doing the wrong exercises for my body type. I am pear-shaped, and you should never go up and down stairs, because it bulks you up. So, I began doing some exercises from escape your shape's trainer I saw in a magazine. That has helped. I only did them twice the other week and lost an inch in my hips and waist! ;)

I would wear at least two sizes smaller if the bloating in my lower abdomen was not so bad. It is probably the candida causing it. Every time I try to go low-carb, not only am I hungry all the time, but I shake all over. My blood sugar gets low. How do you fix this?

Dear LadyBoss,

I found something that you may want to check out. Go to Open Original Shared Link and look at this. I think this is a possibility.

This disease can cause you to waste away. It could be related to the Candida infection you have.

Sincerely,

NoGluGirl

Raising you vitamin D will increase absorption of calcium automatically without supplementation of calcium.  A high PTH can be caused by low D causing poor calcium absorption; not insuffient calcium intake.  With low D your body is not absorbing calcium from your food so it steals it from your bones.  Heart has priority over bone. I've been taking 10,000 IU D3 a day since 2015.  My doctor says to continue. To fix my lactose intolerance, lots of lactobacillus from yogurts, and brine fermented pickles and saurkraut and olives.  We lose much of our ability to make lactase endogenosly with maturity but a healthy colony of lactobacillus in our gut excretes lactase in exchange for room and board. The milk protein in grass fed milk does not bother me. It tastes like the milk I grew up on.  If I drink commercial milk I get heartburn at night. Some experts estimate that 90% of us do not eat Adequite Intake of choline.  Beef and eggs are the principle source. Iodine deficiency is a growing concern.  I take 600 mcg a day of Liquid Iodine.  It and NAC have accelerated my healing all over.  Virtually blind in my right eye after starting antihypertensive medication and vision is slowly coming back.  I had to cut out starches because they drove my glucose up into the 200+ range.  I replaced them with Red Bull for the glucose intake with the vitamins, minerals and Taurine needed to process through the mitochodria Krebs Cycle to create ATP.  Went from A1c 13 down to 7.9.  Work in progress. Also take B1,B2,B3,B5,B6. Liquid Iodine, Phosphatidyl Choline, Q10, Selenium, D and DHEA.     Choline supplemented as phosphatidylcholine decreases fasting and postmethionine-loading plasma homocysteine concentrations in healthy men +

@catnapt, Wheat germ has very little gluten in it.  Gluten is  the carbohydrate storage protein, what the flour is made from, the fluffy part.  Just like with beans, there's the baby plant that will germinate  ("germ"-inate) if sprouted, and the bean part is the carbohydrate storage protein.   Wheat germ is the baby plant inside a kernel of wheat, and bran is the protective covering of the kernel.   Little to no gluten there.   Large amounts of lectins are in wheat germ and can cause digestive upsets, but not enough Gluten to provoke antibody production in the small intestines. Luckily you still have time to do a proper gluten challenge (10 grams of gluten per day for a minimum of two weeks) before your next appointment when you can be retested.

Hello, @asaT, I'm curious to know whether you are taking other B vitamins like Thiamine B1 and Niacin B3.  Malabsorption in Celiac disease affects all the water soluble B vitamins and Vitamin C.  Thiamine and Niacin are required to produce energy for all the homocysteine lowering reactions provided by Folate, Cobalamine and Pyridoxine.   Weight gain with a voracious appetite is something I experienced while malnourished.  It's symptomatic of Thiamine B1 deficiency.   Conversely, some people with thiamine deficiency lose their appetite altogether, and suffer from anorexia.  At different periods on my lifelong journey, I suffered this, too.   When the body doesn't have sufficient thiamine to turn food, especially carbohydrates, into energy (for growth and repair), the body rations what little thiamine it has available, and turns the carbs into fat, and stores it mostly in the abdomen.  Consuming a high carbohydrate diet requires additional thiamine to process the carbs into energy.  Simple carbohydrates (sugar, white rice, etc.) don't contain thiamine, so the body easily depletes its stores of Thiamine processing the carbs into fat.  The digestive system communicates with the brain to keep eating in order to consume more thiamine and other nutrients it's not absorbing.   One can have a subclinical thiamine insufficiency for years.  A twenty percent increase in dietary thiamine causes an eighty percent increase in brain function, so the symptoms can wax and wane mysteriously.  Symptoms of Thiamine insufficiency include stunted growth, chronic fatigue, and Gastrointestinal Beriberi (diarrhea, abdominal pain), heart attack, Alzheimer's, stroke, and cancer.   Thiamine improves bone turnover.  Thiamine insufficiency can also affect the thyroid.  The thyroid is important in bone metabolism.  The thyroid also influences hormones, like estrogen and progesterone, and menopause.  Vitamin D, at optimal levels, can act as a hormone and can influence the thyroid, as well as being important to bone health, and regulating the immune system.  Vitamin A is important to bone health, too, and is necessary for intestinal health, as well.   I don't do dairy because I react to Casein, the protein in dairy that resembles gluten and causes a reaction the same as if I'd been exposed to gluten, including high tTg IgA.  I found adding mineral water containing calcium and other minerals helpful in increasing my calcium intake.   Malabsorption of Celiac affects all the vitamins and minerals.  I do hope you'll talk to your doctor and dietician about supplementing all eight B vitamins and the four fat soluble vitamins because they all work together interconnectedly.

Hi Jane: You may want to try the D3 I now take. I have reactions to fillers and many additives. Sports Research, it is based in the USA and I have had no bad reactions with this brand. The D3 does have coconut oil but it is non GMO, it is Gluten free, Soy free, Soybean free and Safflower oil free.  I have a cupboard full of supplements that did not agree with me -  I just keep trying and have finally settled on Sports Research. I take NAKA Women's Multi full spectrum, and have not felt sick after taking 2 capsules per day -  it is a Canadian company. I buy both from Amazon. I wish you well in your searching, I know how discouraging it all is. Florence.

highly unlikely  NOTHING and I mean NOTHING else has ever caused me these kinds of symptoms I have no problem with dates, they are a large part of my diet In fact, I eat a very high fiber, very high vegetable and bean diet and have for many years now. It's considered a whole foods plant based or plant forward diet (I do now eat some lean ground turkey but not much) I was off dairy for years but recently had to add back plain yogurt to meet calcium needs that I am not allowed to get from supplements (I have not had any problem with the yogurt)   I eat almost no processed foods. I don't eat out. almost everything I eat, I cook myself I am going to keep a food diary but to be honest, I already know that it's wheat products and also barley that are the problem, which is why I gradually stopped eating and buying them. When I was eating them, like back in early 2024, when I was in the middle of moving and ate out (always had bread or toast or rolls or a sub or pizza) I felt terrible but at that time was so busy and exhausted that I never stopped to think it was the food. Once I was in my new place, I continued to have bread from time to time and had such horrible joint pain that I was preparing for 2 total knee replacements as well as one hip! The surgery could not go forward as I was (and still am) actively losing calcium from my bones. That problem has yet to be properly diagnosed and treated   anyway over time I realized that I felt better when I stopped eating bread. Back at least 3 yrs ago I noticed that regular pasta made me sick so I switched to brown rice pasta and even though it costs a lot more, I really like it.   so gradually I just stopped buying and eating foods with gluten. I stopped getting raisin bran when I was constipated because it made me bloated and it didn't help the constipation any more (used to be a sure bet that it would in the past)   I made cookies and brownies using beans and rolled oats and dates and tahini and I LOVE them and have zero issues eating those I eat 1 or more cans of beans per day easily can eat a pound of broccoli - no problem! Brussels sprouts the same thing.   so yeh it's bread and related foods that are clearly the problem  there is zero doubt in my mind
