One new poster assualted me. Steve missed it, but it was after one of his posts that she got nasty. I called her on it, she got nastier. The WHOLE THING was deleted starting with Steve's post. One of my posts that should have been deleted wasn't, so you can still see it there and all it says is "deleted post". If that's the thread, Steve, that's what happened. I agree that your post didn't need to be deleted, but the rest did.

Probably but there should be some explanation....

I don't mind if they attacked me and the real thing is they really needed help....

The initial posts were not so understanding, I don't agree with the original poster (obviously) but the responses were a little antagonistic and really as my post pointed out we all have different ideas anyway.... wouldn't the world be boring if we didn't...

IMHO the initial posts should have been moderated ... no one special, just the overall tone ... and its not like the posts were actually wrong.. but they really didn't seem very compassionate to me and this person so obviously needed help not criticism...

They could possibly have been a spammer... they did mention one product by name... but I think as a group we failed them.. :( sorry... I felt like the responses were more of a club or clique reacting rather than the usual helpful posts ... I can see why but IMHO its no different from people who choose to eat "gluten-light" and brush off breadcrumbs or share a toaster etc. just a little more over the edge...

Its my opinion many people are conning themselves over shared kitchens and several other matters but that is thier opinion... I don't agree and I can be a little direct but try puitting yourself in their position... they think they found a cure they want to share and they just get very negative replies instead of being helped?

A similar thing happened over the lyme disease poster... but she was partially correct and apparently did get diagnosed earlier... and probably a few people here actually benefited from what she said?

So once again I think we failed as a group here.... and perhaps we can all learn from that...

It may have been an oversight. I don't know why your post was removed and my last post wasn't. I don't know how the program works, but maybe when Scott went to delete the posts he was one number off and deleted yours instead of my last post.

It wasn't the original poster that caused the turmoil ... it was a new poster I haven't seen before or since ... she was less sensitive to the original poster and the rest of us for that matter than I've ever seen anyone be on this board.

I'd bet anything that removing your post was just a mistake.

Ironically enough, I never even considered Lyme when the "Lyme poster" was here. Now, that's a different story, as it's my understanding she got her three warnings and didn't change what she was saying. She thought everyone with celiac has Lyme .... I just think the symptoms are so similar because both are a systemic disease, that many people who have Lyme try the gluten-free diet thinking they have celiac and see little improvement on the diet because they have a totally different problem. The symptoms are a very close match. Then there are the really lucky people like me who have both! ;)

If you saw the argument, you would understand why those posts were deleted. The woman was not the original poster, and she was very insensitive towards her (and you, and me, and everyone else). I don't think the original poster even saw the thread when those messages were there it was so short-lived. Heck, Jestgar didn't even see them!

Jestgar Rising Star

Yeah! And I always look for arguments ;)

I also recall that the original poster also said he was raw/vegan so it seems VERY unlikely that he was consuming any gluten anyway.

No, different thread. This one had to do with family not being supportive. We ALL might be talking about different threads! The one with a deleted gfp post and several other deleted posts was about family being unsupportive.

I agree, many of the systemic autoimmune conditions are known as "great imitators" in that they all have various vague symptoms - celiac with neurologic signs can mimic MS, Sjogrens and Systemic lupus are similar with their symptoms and can occur togther - making it a diagnostic challenge, Lyme disease is often missed and, yup, lucky people can be undiagnosed celiac when they contract Lyme, etc. ... and depression can accompany ALL of these diseases very commonly

I learn a lot from this board, its all about differing experiences, opinions and knowledge that we share...I think that somtimes the negative replies start happening when someone new comes on board claiming cures, or disagreeing with the long time gluten free ... or perhaps coming in with expectations that aren't met.

We all have to reply like we might meet the person some day, I want to be able to smile and say hello...not run for cover cause of something I said, or walk up to the other person and argue.

I learned long ago, that there is never only one or two ways to solve a problem, everyone's experiences are different and sometimes patients "dont read the book" - meaning they dont have the textbook symptoms OR there are 2 conditions occuring in that patient.

I like all the various threads we have going, but with moe than 12,000 people here, there is bound to be some grumbling.........

we could be talkiung about 3 different threads (now Im dizzy) ...

but I guess that's worse????

I think what I'm trying to say is a lot of threads might get started by people we feel are niaeve ... but something is wrong when the whole board gets sucked in....

If one nasty person hijacked that thread then if we all acted properly (and I know non of us are perfect) then it shouldn't really have happened, they should have been moderated straight away and warned...

The problem is by the time Scott steps in the whole thing has snowballed.... so it ends up being a severe pruning because there are insults flying everywhere...

If we just had a moderator delete that one post and put a message it was deleted because it was deliberatly provoking/insulting or whatever then either the person should shut up OR they will keep posting and get banned if Scott thinks they deserve it..

IMHO what happens is people post back and then even mods post back but not as mods... I don't know what a mod can do (using the SW and permissions Scott has defined) but they should be able to delete that offending post before the whole thing gets out of hand...

Secondly poeple who know better and I know are nice people had responded badly to the original poster... IMHO ... and the original poster was the one who probably lost out... I doubt he/she meant to provoke the reaction they did... I think they were just misguided but either way people could have been a little more welcoming IMHO and been more gentle in thier corrections...

From the original post I think the poster did beleive they had cured themselves... and they may well have got rid of the gastro symptoms if they were borderline anyway... but now the poor person is probably damaging themselves without realising it.

If we could have encouraged them to stay and read other peoples experiences we could maybe... just maybe have stopped them being really ill later.. or even getting a terminal disease...

Yes ... I wish I put it that way ....

As moderators, we can't delete posts or even make a single post invisible. We can only make a whole thread invisible.

It kind of boils down to that Steve happened to post in 2 threads that either were completely deleted, or had certain posts deleated. There were others, also that this happened to. I also posted there, and went in and edited mine to better fit with the "new" thread.

As Andrea (and I, upthread) said, we as mods can't delete a single post. We can only render an entire thread invisable until Scott has a chance to look at it. If a member has a problem with a single post, they always have the option of reporting it.

It's a sort of "damned if you do, and damned if you don't" situation for the mods sometimes. (Sorry, but it is) I've stepped in and warned people for getting rude or inflammatory, and have been criticized for it (or completely ignored). On the other hand, if we let it go and just keep an eye on the situation, we get criticized for not saying something. Posting incorrect information is not against board rules--I'm not saying that incorrect info should not be corrected (and politely, at that), but where to draw the line about warning people is a lot of times subjective and up to the mod reading at that time, unless a board rule has been broken.

I've learned that you truly can't please all of the people all of the time. Some of the responses to that thread were a bit harsh (sarcastic, actually), but I could see where the people posting them were coming from. I can also see the point where maybe we should have given the guy the benefit of the doubt, and tried to set him straight.

Here's the thing--99% of the time these things work themselves out. That's why in most cases, Scott isn't aware that there is a problem until either someone reports it, or he sees that a warning has been issued.

Jestgar Rising Star

Patti, the moderators on this board are very gentle and I'm not sure a warning from one of them would be perceived as anything to be paid attention to. Maybe you could come up with a standardized sort of phrase: "The moderators have been asked to monitor this post for abusive behavior. Please stop XXXX, return to the original topic, refrain from mentioning XXXX...." Whatever fits the situation.

We are a diverse group, which always makes it interesting. I can envision a three page debate on the color of the sky. But then, it's always "Carolina Blue" GO TARHEELS!!!

For the most part I think that everyone here conducts themselves in a respectful manner, with the exception of an occasional interloper. The Boards kindness and generosity far outweighs an occasional outburst.

Told her to scream- it's my 3 year old niece Olivia and we have screaming contests (yeah- my sister LOVES that!). She has the highest pitch, most piercing scream I have EVER heard. When she was about a year and a half my dad and I took her to Ben and Jerry's and she got mad at her ice cream because it was too hard to eat so she let out this blood-curdling screech.

It was so bad that the guys behind the counter burst out laughing.

She also screamed through my wedding vows- we have pictures of my sister holding her with her hand over her mouth. She cracks me up!

I must say, you guys have cheered me up immensely today! :D:wub:

Angus will be back shortly. ;)

@NanceK, I do have Hypersensitivity Type Four reaction to Sulfa drugs, a sulfa allergy.  Benfotiamine and other forms of Thiamine do not bother me at all.  There's sulfur in all kinds of Thiamine, yet our bodies must have it as an essential nutrient to make life sustaining enzymes.  The sulfur in thiamine is in a ring which does not trigger sulfa allergy like sulfites in a chain found in pharmaceuticals.  Doctors are not given sufficient education in nutrition (nor chemistry in this case).  I studied Nutrition before earning a degree in Microbiology.  I wanted to know what vitamins were doing inside the body.   Thiamine is safe and nontoxic even in high doses.   Not feeling well after starting Benfotiamine is normal.  It's called the "thiamine paradox" and is equivalent to an engine backfiring if it's not been cranked up for a while.  Mine went away in about three days.  I took a B Complex, magnesium and added molybdenum for a few weeks. It's important to add a B Complex with all eight essential B vitamins. Supplementing just one B vitamin can cause lows in some of the others and result in feeling worse, too.  Celiac Disease causes malabsorption of all the B vitamins, not just thiamine.  You need all eight.  Thiamine forms including Benfotiamine interact with each of the other B vitamins in some way.  It's important to add a magnesium glycinate or chelate supplement as well.  Forms of Thiamine including Benfotiamine need magnesium to make those life sustaining enzymes.  (Don't use magnesium oxide.  It's not absorbed well.  It pulls water into the intestines and is used to relieve constipation.)   Molybdenum is a trace mineral that helps the body utilize forms of Thiamine.   Molybdenum supplements are available over the counter.  It's not unusual to be low in molybdenum if low in thiamine.   I do hope you will add the necessary supplements and try Benfotiamine again. Your goal is not to be a good puppet, there is no gain in that. You might want to restart the ones that helped.  It sounds more like you are suffering from malnutrition.  Gluten free foods are not fortified with things like Thiamine (B1), vitamin D, Iodine, B1,2,3,5,6 and 12 as non-gluten free products are required to be. There is a Catch-22 here.  Malnutrition can cause SIBO, and SIBO can worsen malnutrition. Another possibility is side effects from any medication that are taking.  I was on Metformin 3 months before it turned me into a zombi.  I had crippling side effects from most of the BP meds tried on me, and Losartan has many of the side effects on me from my pre gluten free days. Because you have been gluten free, you can test and talk until you are blue in the face but all of your tests will be negative.  Without gluten, you will not create the antigen against gluten, no antigens to gluten, so no small intestine damage from the antigens.  You will need to do a gluten challange to test positive if you need an official diagnosis, and even then, no guaranty: 10 g of gluten per day for 6 weeks! Then a full panel of Celiac tests and biopsy. At a minimum consider vitamin D, Liquid Iodine (unless you have dermatitis herpetiformis and iodine exasperates the rash), and Liquid Geritol. Push for vitamin D testing and a consult with a nutritionist experienced with Celiack Disease.  Most blood tests don't indicate nutritional deficiencies.  Your thyroid tests can be perfect, yet not indicate iodine deficiency for example.  Thiamine   test fine, but not pick up on beriberi.  Vegans are often B12 deficient because meat, fish, poultry, eggs, and dairy are the primary souces of B12. Here is what I take daily.  10,000 IU vitamin D3 750 mg g a b a [   ] 200 mg CoQ10 [   ] 100 mg DHEA [   ] 250 mg thiamine B1 [   ] 100 mg of B2 [   ] 500 mg B5 pantothenic acid [   ] 100 mg B6 [   ] 1000 micrograms B12 n [   ] 500 mg vitamin c [   ] 500 mg taurine [   ] 200 mg selenium

Hi…Just a note that if you have an allergy to sulfa it’s best not to take Benfotiamine. I bought a bottle and tried one without looking into it first and didn’t feel well.  I checked with my pharmacist and he said not to take it with a known sulfa allergy. I was really bummed because I thought it would help my energy level, but I was thankful I was given this info before taking more of it.

Hello @Scatterbrain, Are you getting enough vitamins and minerals.  Gluten free food is not fortified so you may be starting to run low on B vitamins and vitamin D.   By the way you should get your mom checked for celiac disease.  You got it from your mom or dad.  Some studies show that following a gluten-free diet can stabilize or improve symptoms of dementia.  I know that for the 63 years I was eating gluten I got dumber and dumber until I started GFD and vitamin replenishment and it began to reverse.  Thiamine can get used up in a week or two.  Symptoms can come and go with daily diet.  Symptoms of beriberi due to Thiamine deficiency.   Difficulty walking. Loss of feeling (sensation) in hands and feet. Loss of muscle function or paralysis of the lower legs. Mental confusion. Pain. Speech difficulties. Strange eye movements (nystagmus) Tingling. Any change in medications? Last March I had corotid artery surgery (90 % blockage), and I started taking Losartan for blood pressure, added to the Clonidine I was taking already.  I was not recovering well and many of my pre gluten free symptoms were back  I was getting worse.  At first I thought it was caused a reaction to the anesthesia from the surgery, but that should have improved after two weeks.  Doctor thought I was just being a wimp. After three months I talked to my doctor about a break from the Losartan to see if it was causing it. It had not made any difference in my bp.  Except for clonindine, all of the previous bp meds tried had not worked to lower bp and had crippling side effects. One, I could not stand up straight; one wobbly knees, another spayed feet.  Inguinal hernia from the Lisinopril cough.  Had I contiued on those, I was destined for a wheelchair or walker. She said the symptoms were not from Losartan so I continued taking it.  Two weeks later I did not have the strength in hips and thighs to get up from sitting on the floor (Help, I can't get up😨).  I stopped AMA (not recommended).  Without the Losartan, a) bp did not change, after the 72 hour withdrawal from Losartanon, on clonidine only and b) symptoms started going away.  Improvement started in 72 hours.  After six weeks they were gone and I am getting better.

Hopefully the food she eats away from home, especially at school, is 100% gluten-free. If you haven't checked in with the school directly about this, it might be worth a planned visit with their staff to make sure her food is safe.
