Judyin Philly Enthusiast

YOU KNOW I'M NOT EXACTLY SURE WHERE THIS PLACE IS IN THE CITY SO I ''THINK'' I'M GOING TO MEET THEM SOMEWHERE AND GO INTO THE CITY WITH THEM AS THEY ARE SO FAMILIAR WITH THE CITY.

I HOWEVER; ONLY KNOW S PHILLY WHERE MY SON LIVED.

WHERE ARE YOU AGAIN..HERSHEY RIGHT?

DON'T WORRY ABOUT DRINKING......EITHER.......I HATE BEER AND DRINK AN OCCASIONAL GLASS OF WHITE WINE BUT THAT'S IT. USUALLY WATER.

I am in Harrisburg, I work in Hershey. So tonight I am doing my wedding guest list. It will be nice to have a weekend without wedding stuff. I have to admit I must be the worst bride, this wedding planning is not fun. :)

The Hyatt is in a great location! It's right on the Water at Penn's landing, Just west of independence hall and the liberty bell. It's also just a short ferry boat ride from the Camden Aquarium and some big battleship i can't remember the name of. It's a little tricky to get to get to If i remember correctly as you have to go over 95. If I was going I'd go early and go "Ride the Duck" from Constitution Center area around the city to see everything! It's a great tour.. The trolly tour is great too! I love philly... now I wish I was going!

Judyin Philly Enthusiast

Judyin Philly Enthusiast

hi all

I went to the cooking spree tonight.

Did anyone else go?

Judy

Judyin Philly Enthusiast

GOOD MORNING EVERYONE.

A SPECIAL HUG GOES OUT TO MY FRIEND ROBBIN. THANKS FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART.

THE PHILLY COOKING SPREE. IT WAS AN AMAZING EVENT AND I'M SO GLAD I WENT. I WILL KNOW HOW TO NAVIGATE THE EVENT NEXT YEAR!!

IF YOUR JUST ON A GLUTEN RESTRICTED DIET.....IT'S OUTSTANDING AND A+ EVENT.

IF YOU HAVE OTHER FOOD INTOLLERANCES.....IT WAS VERY DIFFICULT. THE DISHES ...DID NOT HAVE...THE INGREDIENT CARDS AS PROMISED.

THE 2 OTHER FOLKS I WENT WITH HAD 2 PLATES EACH OF H'ORDERVES BEFORE I EVER COULD FIND ANYTHING I COULD EAT... FINALLY SKIPPED THOSE AND WENT FOR THE THINGS PASSED BY WAITERS..THEY DIDN'T KNOW INGRED OF THOSE EITHER...JUST KEPT SAYING ..."THESE ARE ALL GLUTEN FREE."

SO A GLASS OF WHITE WINE AND AND HR LATER A NICE WAITRESS FOUND OUT THAT THE CHICKEN KABOBS JUST HAD O JUICE AND HONEY SO I HAD 3 TINY PIECES OF CHICKEN. SOME PROTEIN--THANK GOD.

AFTER THE COOK OFF COULD TALK TO SOME OF THE CHEFS AND FOUND A VERY SMALL PORTION OF PORK TO EAT. KNOW IT WAS THE COCONUT SEA BASS THAT MADE ME SICK B/C I ASKED ABOUT SOY AND DAIRY..CHEF SAID IT DIDN'T HAVE ANY IN IT AND GAVE ME HIS PERSONAL RECIPE..BUT THERE ON THE PAGE WAS BUTTER AND SOY SAUSE..SO THAT'S WHAT GOT ME

I DISCOVER WHEN LEAVING (AND NOT BEING ABLE TO HAVE ANY DESERTS B/C I DIDN'T KNOW THE INGRED), THAT THERE WAS A LIST BEHIND THE REGISTRATION COUNTER THAT HAD THE NAME OF EACH DESERT AND THE INGRED USED. ALITTLE LATE FOR ME. ALL HAD EITHER...BUTTER, TAPIOCA FLOUR, SOY FLOUR OR MILK. THERE WAS ONE I COULD TASTE AND IT WAS VERY GOOD. SURE I WENT BACK TO GET A SLICE OF THAT ONE.

THIS AM WOKE UP WITH STOMACH CRAMPS AND THE BIG 'D'. I'M SURE THE PLANNERS OF THE EVENT WOULD BE SADDEN BUT WILL WRITE A NICE LETTER TO VANESSA AFTER I FEEL BETTER. BUT.......I DID GO AND I DID TAKE A RISK AND AM GLAD I WAS ABLE TO TEST MY ABILITY TO GET OUT OF MY COMFORT ZONE.......BUT .........I'M NOT HEALED ENOUGH YET

WILL POST MORE LATER WHEN I FEEL BETTER. HOPE YOU ALL HAVE A NICE DAY

PS ----WOULD LOVE SOME FEED BACK FROM SOME OF YOU WHO HAVE ATTENDED THESE EVENTS IN THE PAST...

Hi judy,

sounds like I missed a good time. Not sure what is wrong with my mom yet. We are thinking the flu. She will not go to the dr. She just lays on the couch and drinks. We are pushing fluids. Yesterday she did eat. I think the reason she doesn't have any energy is she is not eating.

I might call her in a few minutes and check on her.

So the food you did eat, was it any good? I really wish I go to go, I was looking forward to meeting you. Next year or next gluten free event. I am heading to Cape May in 3 weeks!!!

Judyin Philly Enthusiast

good luck with mom and can't wait to pictures of the big event and esp pictures of Cape may

did you try the Bella Villa yet

if not you have to go there to eat.

Yep, I went there last summer. I got the chicken parm. It was great. I can't wait to go back there again.

luvs2eat Collaborator

My daughter and I went. It was pretty neat. The anchor from CNN who has Celiac was a host and she asked all Celiacs to raise their hand. It was so cool to see about 250 hands shoot up. WE ARE OUT THERE!

We don't have any other issues besides gluten, so we ate like little piggies. Food was delish, booze was free, and we got a whole bunch of freebies from Pamela's bakery and a huge set up Wegman's had there, plus the gift bag of all sorts of goodies.

My only disappointment was the $20 raffle tickets. I understand that it was for a good cause, but $20 for ONE raffle ticket?

We met some super nice people and had a ball!

blueeyedmanda Community Regular

What kind of freebies did Wegamsn give away?

luvs2eat Collaborator

I got a bottle of BBQ sauce (the lady was telling me that no other BBQ sauces are gluten-free... so what have I been using for all these years??), a bottle of basting oil w/ all sorts of spices in it, and a Greek marinade for chicken. Pamelas gave me a box of chocolate biscotti. The gift bag had all sorts of goodies in it.

Most interesting was a little sample of melba toast from a baker names Ina Garden, which you know, if you watch the Food Network, is REALLY close to another chef's name.

I've said it before, and said to the lady from Wegman's... I've had the best luck w/ store brands for things like BBQ and spaghetti sauce. Their ingredients are more REAL (no high-fructose corn syrup) and often gluten-free.

I asked if they'd ever heard of a gluten-free hoisin sauce? She said she'd check up on it and call me!

Cool,

I buy all my marinades, BBQ sauce and other things from their store due to the "G" on the label. Plus you can't beat the price. It is always a bit lower than the others.

luvs2eat Collaborator

Yea, they were really pushing their big "G" on the labels. Interestingly, both my daughter and I started to read the ingredients, out of habit, and were surprised to see Modified Food Starch. I've read different opinions about it, but we tend to just avoid it, assuming that if it doesn't specify the kind of starch, that it's not allowed.

blueeyedmanda Community Regular

It's funny because we don't have a store in our area yet not till Sept. Well I still shop there when I go see my family. I buy a lot of their brand stuff, the G is easy to shop for. Well, my coworkers think it is the neatest thing they love to look at the packages.

I use their pasta sauces a lot and they are real good. I recommend the Smooth Marinara.

Sorry I dropped the ball on the info

I did post but boy was I knocked to the ground..Still feel nauseous but might be partly the heat. The 'd' has finally stopped. ;)

think Wegmans had the best display..and at the end gave away all the products.

i couldn't eat anything in my goodie bag and only 2 things from wegmans...the basting oil w/ all sorts of spices in it, was ok and tried the ti. broth but had anchovies so now can't use that

but it still was a great event.

Wish we could get a group to go and meet next year.

if they had the ingred cards it would have been a big help but still...........they are showing how great gluten-free can taste so of course they are using butter, etc so i do understand it.

sorry for the delay

i will call Vanessa soon.

will post what she says

love you guys

Are you talking about the Soup Stock broth? If so I use the chicken all the time. I jumped up and down in the aisle when I found that!!!

Judyin Philly Enthusiast

hi Manda

it was the Thia broth. think the rest had soy. I'm not sure as i use kitchen basic or imagine beef and chicken broth.

the sweet lady at wegmans tired so hard to find a salad dressing etc without soy

she was as sorry about it as i was.

i can't eat the Pamela's either but know their products tastes wonderful-- before if found i couldn't tolerate them. Pamela folks at the table were so nice..they gave me a whisk and some bag closer clips...they were really sweet as were the pizza people

those little boys were precious.

i asked if they had any slices without cheese.......bless their hearts they all went... ugh, who wants a pizza without cheese? you gotta love their innocence.

they sure went all out for this event!

Hi Charlie, You sound like you have been having a rough time of it. Coeliac disease can cause a multitude of skin, mouth and throat problems. Mouth ulcers and enamel defects are well known but other oral conditions are also more common in people with coeliac disease: burning tongue, inflamed and swollen tongue, difficulty swallowing, redness and crusting in the mouth corners, and dry mouth to name but some. The link below is for paediatric dentistry but it applies to adults too.  Have you had follow up for you coeliac disease to check that your anti-tTG2 antibodies levels have come down? Are you certain that you not being exposed to significant amounts of gluten? Are you taking a PPI for your Barrett's oesophagus? Signs of changes to the tongue can be caused by nutritional deficiencies, particularly iron, B12 and B9 (folate) deficiency. I would make sure to take a good quality multivitamin every day and make sure to take it with vitamin C containing food - orange juice, broccoli, cabbage etc.  Sebaceous hyperplasia is common in older men and I can't find a link to coeliac disease.   Russ.   Oral Manifestations in Pediatric Patients with Coeliac Disease – A Review Article

Hi @Charlie1946 You are very welcome.   I agree wholeheartedly with @knitty kitty:  "I wish doctors would check for nutritional deficiencies and gastrointestinal issues before prescribing antidepressants." I had a type of tingling/sometimes pain in my cheek about 2 years after my diagnosis.  I noticed it after standing in cold wind, affecting  me after the event - for example, the evening after standing outside, I would feel either tingling or stabbing pain in my cheek.   I found using a neck roll seemed to help, reducing caffeine, making sure I was well-hydrated, taking B12 and C vitamins and magnesium.  Then when the lockdowns came and I was using a facemask I realised that this pain was almost entirely eliminated by keeping the wind off my face.  I think looking back I was suffering from a type of nerve pain/damage.  At the time read that coeliacs can suffer from nerve damage caused by nutritional deficiencies and inflammation, and there was hope that as bodywide healing took place, following the adoption of a strict gluten free diet and addressing nutritional deficiencies, recovery was possible.   During this time, I used to spend a lot of time outdoors with my then young children, who would be playing in the park, and I'd be sheltering my face with an upturned coat collar, trying to stay our of the cold wind!  It was during this time a number of people with a condition called Trigeminal Neuralgia came up to me and introduced themselves, which looking back was nothing short of miraculous as I live in a pretty sparsely populated rural community and it is quite a rare condition.   I met a number of non-coeliacs who had suffered with this issue  and all bar one found relief in taking medication like amitriptyline which are type of tricyclic anti-depressant.   They were not depressed, here their doctors had prescribed the drugs as pain killers to address nerve pain, hence I mention here.  Nerve pain caused by shingles is often treated with this type of medication in the UK too, so it is definitely worth bearing in mind if standard pain killers like aspirin aren't working.
