I just started watching Top Chef. I have only seen the last two. I read an article on it in NY magazine so I thought it'd be interesting to check out. I think they have a marathan this weekend so I will catch up then.

I haven't seen any seasons prior to this one. I just started watching on the second episode and I am hooked!

They usually reair all of the episodes on Weds, and then with the weekend marathons, you have an chance to get all caught up.

One of my guilty pleasures is watching Top Chef. I love all the drama and the foofy food they turn out. I think we could use this show to promote celiac awareness. Here is my idea. One of the challenges should be to create a delicious, allergen free meal. The chefs get a whole kitchen full of stuff to create a delicious meal, but they have to do it without using any of the top 8 allergens. To make it more challenging, some of the ingredients provided should contain hidden sources of the allergens (like soy sauce). The food could be tested for the presence of the allergens before it was judged. I think this would really help people understand about CC and label reading and things like that.

I don't know if they would ever do a show like this, but I think it would have universal appeal since allergies and intollerances are more in the news lately.

What do you all think?

This would definitely be a challenge for the chefs :lol:

The first time I caught an episode of Top Chef, ugh, they were in the middle of one of those marathons...I got instantly hooked and watched like three or four episodes in a row :ph34r::lol: Those marathons are seriously evil!

I don't think I'm caught up though. I think I've just been watching reruns :huh: I think I'm stuck in a previous season (the last one I saw had something to do with frozen pasta entrees) What's the latest? Did someone just win?

You're in the right season Mango :D

The frozen pasta dinners was just an episode or two ago, where they had to recreate their own version of a Bertolli (I believe was the brand) frozen pasta meal.

So you just are missing one episode I think.

I tivoed this week's and have yet to view it, but I think they had to do a menu for the late night party crowd and serve them from mobile kitchens right outside of the clubs.

Omg that would be awesome!! You should write the show and suggest it! I mentioned to my husband that I had starting watching the show and the first thing he asked me was "do they have anything on there you can eat?" :)

I'm sure a lot of it we can't eat, especially with multiple food allergies, but I do think they have made quite a few things without gluten ingredients.

We are addicted to Top Chef - it's our Thursday night date - we make dinner and watch the tivo-d episode while we munch on the couch -- of course, our dinner always looks a little boring in comparison!

Next episode is the "open your own restaurant" one -- super challenging and always fun to watch!

Love that show, I usually do the all day shows to catch up on ones that I have missed.

You need to find there contact email and send that to them - how awesome that would be if they could do that - what a GREAT challenge. I agree that it would help sooooo many individuals understand CC, label reading, plus open up others to possibly understanding about allergies.

Anything to promote awareness and healthy living for us would fantastic.

I think I like Tre and Brian. Howie's food looks good, but there's too much footage of him sweating into it... :blink:

That is so true, those Cuban sandwiches in last ep had a serious side of Howie sweat in them.

He seems to be a good chef and in most of the challenges I have liked all the things he's made, but I don't think I like his attitude so much :( , it makes it hard to root for him.

No, I was thinking Andrew . . . but I'm not a fan of spike either.

I've noticed more drama this year, too. I was wondering if these guys are more emotional or if in the past seasons, they editted out the more intense flare-ups to make them all look like good guys . . . nahhh, probably not.

I love these shows... I've gotten so sick of "regular tv" all the shows are the same there are only a few Network shows I'm willing to watch, so I turned to cable.

I love Top Chef and Design Star and Project Runway (i'm both fashion and food crazy, I occasionally even watch Hells Kitchen although Gordon Ramsey gets on my nerves I've worked in some restaurant kitchens before and you really really do have to be able to handle a lot of stress).

Right now I think Stephanie is the best cook there. Dale is interesting too. Can't stand Richard's hair and I think Andrew and Spike are related cuz I mix them up all the times!

I watch far more tv and cable and much of it reality type shows...

Susan-that is so funny about Spike and Andrew being related! I totally agree. I Tivo Top Chef and have been a fan since the first season. I segued into it from being a Food Network Star addict.

I think Richard is a calculated risk taker, Stephanie is just good, and the rest are average with some redeeming qualities. They are all very talented, I sure couldn't shop for my groceries at other people's homes and come up with something tasty.

Yes, I too thought it was a good showcase for people with food allergies. Quickfire anyone?

No, not in your imagination :lol: I think the chair throwing/kicking might have been the first sign that this season is going to be a little different.....

Having a couple on the show (Zoi & Jennifer) also might have contributed to some extra tension. There are also just a few strong personalities that are already clashing.

I like Stephanie, Antonia, and Dale. Richard's food is just a little too different for my tastes, but he's very unique and innovative, I'll give him that.

Susan, I also love Project Runway, but I am so not into fashion :lol: It's a fun show to watch whether you like fashion or not I think....I tried watching Hell's Kitchen but I don't like his abusive style.

A couple days ago, me and my husband were just talking about how much Andrew and Spike look so much alike. If it wasn't that Spike wore that hat most of the time, I'd be so confused.

I had to laugh at this week's pairing of Spike and Andrew :lol::lol:

I was so surprised actually Stephanie ended up in the losing team, but Tom said both teams in the bottom were only there really on technicalities :rolleyes:<_< .

IMO, I felt Stephanie and Jen's dish was a good improv interpretation, the asparagus was supposed to be "turned on" so I didn't think it was such a big deal that the cheese and the orange were there as the main event doing the turning on of the asparagus....kind of lame their reasoning for sending Jen home for that when the other team didn't even use their assigned ingredient.

      plant sources of calcium, such as spinach, have calcium bound to oxalates, which is not good. best source of calcium is unfortunately dairy, do you tolerate dairy? fermented dairy like kefir is good and or a little hard cheese. i do eat dairy, i can only take so much dietary restriction and gluten is hard enough! but i guess some people do have bad reactions to it, so different for everyone.

      i take b12, folate, b2, b6, glycine, Nac, zinc, vk2 mk4, magnesium, coq10, pqq, tmg, creatine, omega 3, molybdnem (sp) and just started vit d. quite a list i know.  I have high homocysteine (last checked it was 19, but is always high and i finally decided to do something about it) and very low vitamin d, 10. have been opposed to this supp in the past, but going to try it at 5k units a day. having a pth test on friday, which is suspect will be high. my homocysteine has come down to around 9 with 3 weeks of these supplements and expect it to go down further. i also started on estrogen/progesterone. I have osteoporosis too, so that is why the hormones.  anyway, i think all celiacs should have homocysteine checked and treated if needed (easy enough with b vit, tmg). homocysteine very bad thing to be high for a whole host of reasons. all the bad ones, heart attack , stroke, alzi, cancer..... one of the most annoying things about celiacs (and there are so many!) is the weight gain. i guess i stayed thin all those years being undiagnosed because i was under absorbing everything including calories. going gluten-free and the weight gain has been terrible, 30#, but i'm sure a lot more went into that (hip replacement - and years of hip pain leading to inactivity when i was previously very active, probably all related to celiacs, menopause) yada yada. i seemed to lose appetite control, like there was low glp, or leptin or whatever all those hormones are that tell you that you are full and to stop eating. my appetite is immense and i'm never full. i guess decades or more ( i think i have had celiacs since at least my teens - was hospitalized for abdominal pain and diarrhea for which spastic colon was eventually diagnosed and had many episodes of diarrhea/abdominal pain through my 20's. but that symptom seemed to go away and i related it to dairy much more so than gluten. Also my growth was stunted, i'm the only shorty in my family. anyway, decades of malabsorption and maldigestion led to constant hunger, at least thats my theory. then when i started absorbing normally, wham!! FAT!!!

      Great advise there I agree with the aniexty part, and the aura migraine has I suffer both, I've also read some great books that have helped I'm going too look the one you mentioned up too thankyou for that, I find a camomile tea just a small one and a gentle wind down before bed has helped me too, I suffer from restless leg syndrome and nerve pain hence I don't always sleep well at the best of times , racing mind catches up I have decorated my whole house in one night in my mind before 🤣 diet changes mindset really help , although I have to say it never just disappears, I find once I came to terms with who I am I managed a lot better  , a misconception is for many to change , that means to heal but that's not always the case , understanding and finding your coping mechanisms are vital tools , it's more productive to find that because there is no failure then no pressure to become something else , it's ok to be sad it's ok to not sleep , it's ok to worry , just try to see it has a journey not a task 🤗

      I agree there I've tryed this myself to prove I can't eat gluten or lactose and it sets me back for about a month till I have to go back to being very strict to settle again

      You may also need to supplement with B12 as this vitamin is also involved in iron assimilation and is often deficient in long-term undiagnosed celiac disease.
