On Friday night, my 5 month old niece started to feel sick and had a slight fever. All of a sudden the fever spiked and she had a seizure. They sent her home from the ER and gave her an antibiotic and said it was an infection....today she was doing well and then out of no where another seizure and once again a tmep spike.

She is a tiny baby too. So we are really worried, plus it is my sisters first. They are back at the hospital and I am waiting on news.

Please keep them in your thoughts.

Oh no, Amanda, that's horrible! I'm sure everything will be okay, but its always so scary when a new baby is sick, especially when they're THAT sick. Hang in there and I'm sure time will work its magic and she'll be back to normal in no time. I'm glad they got her to the hospital right away. I'm sure she's in good hands.

I am so sorry, i will for sure keep her in my thoughts. I hope they keep her overnight. Please keep us updated on her. She is too little to be going threw this, poor little thing.

Sending prayers her way!

Friends of mine had a baby the same time we had Eileen (who is now 14). Well, for the first two years, their girl Tori, used to spike fevers very quickly and have seizures. She outgrew them by the time she was 2. It was really scary for the parents though.....

Good Luck and Prayers to your family!!!

My good friends daughter had febrile seizures. Kids usually outgrow them by the time they are five. It is not dependant on how high the temp gets but by how fast it gets there. By the time her daughter was 3, she could actually tell her mom it was coming . . . actually, she would say in a moaning voice "Mommy, medicine", then the mom would immediately give her tylenol and strip her down and use cool wash cloths. Of course they had no idea if they actually prevented another seizure, but the believed they did. Hopefully, it's nothing more serious than that . . . but knowing what they are and knowing that they will outgrow them doesn't make them any less scary.

Hopefully, you will all have answers soon!!

Amanda I hope everything is going ok with your niece.

A month ago one of my nurses that I work with she had her grandson in the back seat of her car taking him to the store to get some medicine for his cold and with the car being hot from the sun it was a 100 plus day outside so the car was even hotter, when they got back into the car his lowgrade fever spiked really fast that he had started having febrile seizure, she at that moment looked in her rear view mirror say that he was blue and having a seizure that luckily she was still in the parking lot of the store. She got him out of the car and stopped cars passing by her by standing infront of the cars while giving rescue breaths and telling the ladies who stopped to call 911, her daughter here at work and everybody else. Thank goodness it was her and not the other grandmother because it may not have been as pretty. It turns out that he had a double ear infection in both ears, the ER docs told her that he was lucky that she had enough sense to get him out of the car like she did.

Hi, sorry to hear about your neice. My oldest son had what they call febrile seizures. He was 13 months old when they started and lasted until about age 3. He was put on phenobarbitol. He had to take this medicaine 2 to 3 times a day every day. Usually tylenol doesnt help except bring the fever down. The phenobarbitol would help aid with the seizure. When he would even get a temp just below 100 he would start with a seizure. It may very well be infection related but I would also try to get a second opinion. In my sons case, as I found out later, I had the same thing at approximately the same age my son was. I had no clue and was trying to get a history on his father as he was not in the picture.

So good luck and see if they can get a second opinion just to be sure. Babies being sick is no fun. I do hope they find out what is wrong and can help her

She followed up with the Ped dr this morning, who is saying it is a viral infection. So we are keeping our fingers crossed that the meds will kick it and she will be her smiling self again.

I will keep your niece in my prayers. Never any fun to have a sick child ...esp when they get seizures from fever. Kathryn had them when she was little - with a temperature spike.

Actually Kathyrn had a seizure when she was 13 and needed an appendectomy - she went from 102 to 104.5 in a matter of 30 minutes...luckily we were in emerg and they got an IV into her and they cooled her off a bit.

Even though intellectually I knew it was febrile seizure and due to a sudden rise in her temperature...it is frightening! It is all the more scary when a baby or small child has them - becasue they are little and so helpless.

PS - make sure her mom is insistent about second opinion if the fever stays and doesnt go back to normal. Kawasaki disease is characterized by fever that is unresponsive to tylenol or ibuprofen and persists for 5 - 10 days, accompanied by rashes and lethargy (out of proportion to fever), as well as some other signs. Kathryn had it and was not diagnosed til 20 days after the initial fever....they can do a lot if they catch it early.

actually very well, no fevers, smiling and playful again. Viral Infection was the final outcome. She checked out fine with her Ped Md as well. I'm glad :) She is such a little peanut. Thats her nickname.

So this weekend Silvia cut her first tooth, so when she had another fever and some D my mom assured Tammy that sometimes when they cut teeth they do not feel as well. (no painful cutting of teeth though :)) SO today the seziures started again and the baby was taken to the ER. In the ER she stopped breathing. They did a lot of tests and she was diagnosed with aferbile seziures.

They also did a urine test and her WBC is high which is indicating that she is fighting an infection. Tomorrow she is having an EEg to see what if anything else could cause the seziures.

Just a little update for you guys....not exactly good news....:(

When I was looking up Noah's encephalitis, I saw several links to "vaccine-induced encephalitis." Given her history, I would delay all vaccines until she is much, much older.

      Thus has got to STOP , medical bit believing us! I literally went through 31 years thinking it was just a food allergy as its downplayed by medical if THEY weren't the ones who diagnosed us! Im positive for HLA-DQ2 which is first celiac patient per Iran and Turkey. Here in the States especially in Cali its why do you feel that way? Why do you think your celiac...

      @Scatterbrain, Thiamine Vitamin B1 and amino acid Taurine work together. Our bodies can make Taurine from meats consumed. Our bodies cannot make Thiamine and must consume thiamine from food. Meat is the best source of B vitamins like Thiamine. Vegetarians may not make sufficient taurine since they don't eat meat sources of taurine...

Since we, as Celiacs, often have digestive problems, I looked at the ingredients. The majority of the enzymes in this supplement are made using black mold, Aspergillus! Your not eating gluten so its something else.Medical caused me depression. I thought I was safe with my former pcp for 25 years considering i thought everything I went through and going through will be available when I get fired again for health. Health not write-ups my health always come back when you're better.Im not and being tossed away at no fault to my own other than shitty genes.I was denied disability because person said he didn't know how to classify me! I said Im celiac, i have ibs, hernia, sciatica, high blood pressure, in constant pain have skin and eye issues and menopause intensified everything. With that my celiac nightmare began to reprove my disregarded disease to a bunch of clowns who think they are my careteam when they said I didn't have...I feel Im still breathing so I can fight this so no body else has to deal with this nightmare. Starting over with " new care team" and waisting more time on why I think I am when diagnosed in 1994 before food eliminated from my diet. P.s everything i went through I did write to medical board, so pretty sure I will continue to have a hard time.

Vegetarians may not consume sufficient Thiamine since few veggies are good sources.  Whole grains, legumes, and nuts and seeds contain thiamine.  Many of these sources can be hard to digest and absorb for people with Celiac disease.   You may find taking the forms of thiamine called Benfotiamine or TTFD (tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide) and a B Complex will give the benefits you're looking for better than taurine alone.

      @Jmartes71, I went to Doterra's site and had a look around.  The Doterra TerraZyme supplement really jumped out at me.  Since we, as Celiacs, often have digestive problems, I looked at the ingredients.  The majority of the enzymes in this supplement are made using black mold, Aspergillus!  Other enzymes are made by yeast Saccharomyces!  Considering the fact that Celiac often have permeable intestines (leaky gut syndrome), I would be very hesitant to take a product like this.  Although there may not be live black mold or yeast in the product, the enzymes may still cause an immune system response which would definitely cause inflammation throughout the body.   Skin, eyes, and intestines are all made from the same basic type of cells.  Your skin on the outside and eyes can reflect how irritated the intestines are on the inside.  Our skin, eyes, and intestines all need the same vitamins and nutrients to be healthy:  Vitamin A, Niacin B3 and Tryptophan, Riboflavin B2, Biotin B7, Vitamin C, and Omega Threes.  Remember that the eight B vitamins work together.  Just taking high doses of just one, vitamin like B12, can cause a deficiency in the others.  Taking high doses of B12 can mask a Folate B9 deficiency.  If you take B12, please take a B Complex, too.  Thiamine B1 can be taken in high doses safely without toxicity.  Thiamine is needed by itself to produce energy so every cell in the body can function, but Thiamine also works with the other B vitamins to make life sustaining enzymes and digestive enzymes.  Deficiencies in either Niacin, Vitamin C, or Thiamine can cause digestive problems resulting in Pellagra, Scurvy, and Gastrointestinal Beriberi.   If you change your diet, you will change your intestinal microbiome.  Following the Autoimmune Protocol Diet, a Paleo diet, will starve out SIBO bacteria.  Thiamine keeps bacteria in check so they don't get out of control as in SIBO.  Thiamine also keeps MOLDS and Yeasts from overgrowth.   Menopause symptoms and menstrual irregularities are symptomatic of low Vitamin D.   Doctors are not as knowledgeable about malnutrition as we need them to be.  A nutritionist or dietician would be more helpful.   Take control of your diet and nutrition.  Quit looking for a pill that's going to make you feel better overnight.  The Celiac journey is a marathon, not a sprint.   "Let food be your medicine, and let medicine be your food."

      The Lindt (Lindor) dairy-free oat milk truffles are definitely gluten-free, and (last time I checked) so are the white chocolate truffles and the mint chocolate truffles.

      I've used magnesium taurinate and magnesium taurate vitamins.  Didn't notice much of a difference when I used them.
