Thank God, They Found My Problem At Last!

I am so happy! Yesterday, Feb. 10, I was at the hospital for an upper gi and small bowel follow through. Since I'm still getting sick, despite a small intestine that has been healed for months, he wanted to see if there was a structural problem. Basically, they took photos and looked at my intestines. Then they told me to drink this white liquid that tasted like chalk--disgusting--called barium. They had to wait for it to go through my system, so I walked for about four hours, trying to get it to go through my system. They took x-rays every 30 minutes--they started at 9:00 and I wasn't out of the hospital till about 2:00. When the stuff got through me, they took more x-rays. It sounded like there was a problem since the two radiologists kept questioning where something was or where it led to with my intestines.

The doctor called my mom today: I have malrotation of the intestines. Basically, when I feel stomach pains, it's that my intestines are twisting into a corkscrew and nothing can get through. After awhile, they twist back. Next Tuesday, Feb. 15th, I'm going in for the "surgery"--where they make a small incision at my belly button and do something to correct it.

I'm just so happy that they've found it. My 1 yr. anniversary of diagnosis will be the 18th--and I should be healthy by then! The doctor said I'll feel the results immediately.

I just wanted to share the news and thank everyone who tried to help me find my problem. It's been so long since I've felt healthy!

celiac3270-That is so great that they found that!! :D I had that done before to and had to drink all that chalk like stuff. At least they flavored it but it was still pretty nasty. I hope that makes you feel better when you have the surgery done...I'm so happy for you! :D Good luck

Hey celiac3270, that is so awesome. I'm so happy for you :D. Keep us informed about the outgoing of the "surgery". In germany we press our thumbs to wish you good luck.

:P Now i have to figure out how to make my bread until next tuesday with pressed thumbs :P

Oh celiac3270, I am soooo happy for you!! That is amazing news!!! You must be on Cloud 9....... finally an answer......

I will be keeping you in my prayers for the "surgery" and pray that you will finally have some relief!!!! I can almost feel your joy over the computer!!!

More news. First, they've changed it from Tuesday to Monday. Don't have a time yet. Also, I'll have to stay in the hospital for a few days--gosh, didn't realize it was that major--I thought of it kinda like an endo, but with a slight incision. I'm scared to even think of a hospital nutritionist w/ my food and all--after all, I've heard stories here about the dietician who brings you white bread and thinks it's all right since it's white, not wheat. I'd know not to eat it, but I'd be scared of contamination or hidden gluten they wouldn't check out. So I'm bringing my own food. Thank you for the well wishes :D.

I am really excited that they found it--on Cloud 9, as Karen said :) --just kinda scared about the procedure if I need to stay in the hospital for days--darn, that means I'll miss a couple days of posting...lol...I'm on multiple times a day--I'll go nuts :lol:

Hey celiac3270, in dogs and horses we call that "bloat"!! :D It's often instantly fatal! :blink:

Good to hear that you've finally learned something concrete AND they can fix it! :P

Hope they don't poison you in the hospital, and that you can thoroughly enjoy your favourite gluten-free meal on your anniversary!

BTW yep I get but what about white bread OR I am sure everyone can appreciate it, But it isn't Wheat flour, it's White Flour. <_< Yep and white flor is BLEACH wheat flour, sigh.

Congrats, on the diagnosis (is that proper to say when somebody has to have surgery?? ha :blink: ) I have a friend who has that condition. Take care of yourself and you will be in my prayers and thoughts!! Good luck and don't worry about things too much, the added stress isn't good for you.

Hi celiac3270,

Don't know if you've had surgery before, but I sure have...many times.

My best advice: As they put you under, sing your favorite song to yourself in your head, and think of your favorite person...you should wake feeling happy :)

You must be getting ready for your surgery for tomorrow. Good luck and keep us posted. I'm SURE you'll feel much better once your intestines are unscrewed!!! but remember you will still have to keep up with the gluten-free diet!

I had surgery in July 2004 for severe adhesions which were keep my intestines stuck to other organs. BM's were horrible....as there was so much pain afterwards. I feel soooooooooooo much better since having everything freed up! but.....I still have to watch my diet with respect to the intolerances.

Hang in there better days are coming!

I am getting ready--and bringing many gluten-free foods in case I they try to give me white bread and saltines and I decide that I can't trust their food.

I will post when I get out--which will be Wed. or Thurs., I think.

And I know about the gluten-free diet--I'm just thrilled cause this should be the end of my symptoms.

      Thank you so much for your response Yes it seems as though things get very painful as time goes on. I'm not eating gluten as far as I know. However, I'm not sure of cross contamination. My system seems to weaken to hidden spices and other possibilities. ??? if cross contamination is possible...I am in a super sensitive mode of celiac disease...

      EXACTLY! I was asked yesterday on my LAST video call with Standford and I stated exactly yes absolutely this is why I need the name! One, get proper care, two, not get worse.Im falling apart, stressed out, in pain and just opened email from Stanford stating I was rude ect.I want that video reviewed by higher ups and see if that women still has a job or not...

      If you're just starting out in being gluten free, I would expect it to take months before you learned enough about hidden sources of gluten before you stopped making major mistakes. Ice cream? I had to figure it out for myself. If you're in the U.S., not having an official diagnosis does mean you can't claim a tax deduction for the extra expense of gluten-free foods. But it can also be a good thing. Pre-existing conditions might be a reason why a health insurance company might reject your application or charge you more money. No official diagnosis means you don't have a pre-existing condition. I really hope you don't live in the U.S. and don't have these challenges. Do you need an official diagnosis for a specific reason? Else, I wouldn't worry about it. As long as you're diligent in remaining gluten free, your body should be healing as much as possible so there isn't much else you could do anyway. And there are plenty of us out here who never got that official diagnosis because we couldn't eat enough gluten to get tested. Now that the IL-2 test is available, I suppose I could take it, but I don't feel the need. Someone else not believing me really isn't my problem as long as I can stay in control of my own food.

You pretty much need to cook with whole ingredients yourself to avoid it completely. Most gluten-free products should be safe, but while you're in the hypersensitive phase right after going gluten free, you may notice that when something like a microwave meal seems to not be gluten-free … then you find out that it is produced in a shared facility where it can become contaminated. My reactions were much-more severe after going gluten free. The analogy that I use is that you had a whole army of soldiers waiting for some gluten to attack, and now that you took away their target, when the stragglers from the gluten army accidentally wander onto the battlefield, you still have your entire army going out and attacking them. Expect it to take two years before all of the training facilities that were producing your soldiers have fallen into disrepair and are no longer producing soldiers. But that is two years after you stop accidentally glutening yourself. Every time you do eat gluten, another training facility can be built and more soldiers will be waiting to attack. Good luck figuring things out.

      This treatment looks promising. Its aim is to provoke immune tolerance of gluten, possibly curing the disease. It passed the phase 2 trial with flying colours, and I came across a post on Reddit by one of the study volunteers.
