For Those Of Us Who Research Too Much

I am as guilty of it as any one- researching all things health related on the internet. I got this as a daily Om (kind of my thought for the day email) and thought I'd share

Knowing Too Much

Ignorance Can Be Bliss

These days, we can know too much. And while it sometimes can be a great benefit to know the tiniest details of events, both bitter and sweet, there are also times when knowing less about the future, our situations, and the world can be beneficial. Being blissfully ignorant does not mean ignoring vital information or shutting out the world

Hi Bev

I was going to send this one to you today. :)

It really hit me in the head like a 2 X 4.

Had a real dissappointing GI apt this week

Her dx other than IBS...(she's my celiac dr for God's sake).........

Was to 'stop doing research, relax, perscribed a anti depressant for depression' for following the diet so carefully.......

She thinks I'm being too careful and should be taking some risks.

"Your the only one of my celiac patients who doesn't eat out on a regular basis. There are so many products out there for celiac patients to us" That's when i brought up 'soy is in everything'

So when i read this........I thought........." hummmm she could have just put this in the perscription"

She did the all the enoscops and all other testing but not the blood testing for celiac.

It's been 3 1/2 years...........she didn't even know that there was a soy flour.........just told me not to eat soy sause.......didn't know what a nite shade was or foods high in oxalates. Her comment........" well i'm not a dietition."

Think i'll just keep doing alittle less research and put a 'plug in my butt' , eat out and try new foods. ;)

I know i've learned more on this forum than i have from her for sure.

Final shot was........" I want you to relax, take the antidepressant, go out to eat and get a social life. What's the worst thing that can happen?" AH, how about a poopy accident? i said. Her comment, "well just alittle embarrasment but you'd have fun."

And yes, i know you'll all say dump her.

well i'm dumping all drs at this point and sticking to the diet i know works for me..............

and that advice my dear friends.........was free to me. ;)

will keep my urologist......he's a gem. I got a clean scope today for bladder cancer........so all is good.

said the oxaltes crystals can cause some blood in the urine. Course he and i worked for 15 years together at the hospital so he knows I'm not a NUT CASE AS I THINKS I AM

thanks for letting me rant.

love you my buddies..........who get it.

Judy.

Mtndog--I love that quote. Thank you.

And Judy--Are you taking vitamin D3? I take 5000 IU a day. It has really helped my depression and my tendency to catch every germ all winter. You could, uh, do some research about it...

Sometimes I just go out with friends and drink tea while they eat. I get to see them and skip all the food hassle. I eat before or after. Hope you feel better.

I'm glad people found it thoughtful- I was afraid I'd get lambasted by people who didn't like it  I've learned that not all information is equal!!!!!!!!!!!

I was recently just thinking about this- so glad someone else wrote what I was thinking! I often hold myself back from looking into or learning about certain things. If we know too much it can sometimes take away the excitement of "not knowing" and then our brains no longer make full use of the creative energy that goes into thinking and thought processes that lead us to possible explanations. Like researching about our brains and how we think. I don't think there is a true definition to pschology and differant aspects of it and understanding it ( just for example) and I dont believe there is true knowledge to understanding what goes on behind depression or other mental states. Everyone is differant, and although we can have much in common, I don't think there is one solid answer (or answers) to anything and the reasoning for things within ourselves. There is so much false information out there (not that its all false). I believe often times the best answer to all things is within ourselves. People need to learn to LEARN and understand themselves. We learn through the outside world, but nobody can give a true answer for what goes on withn our individual minds and how that shapes our actions and who we are.

I looked further into Thiamax Vitamin B1 by objective nutrients and read all the great reviews. I think I will give this a try. I noticed only possible side affect is possibly the first week so body adjusts. Life Extensions carries Benfotiamine with Thiamine and the mega one you mentioned. Not sure if both in one is better or seperate. some reviews state a laxative affect as side affect. SHould I take with my super B complex or just these 2 and multivitamin? I will do further research but I appreciate the wonderful explanation you provided on Thiamine.

There are other Celiac genes. HLA DQ 2 and HLA DQ 8 show up in people from Northern European descent.   People of Mediterranean descent have HLA DQ 7.  People of Asian descent have HLA DQ 9.   There's other Indigenous populations that have other HLA genes that code for Celiac disease.   Are you still having symptoms?   What do you include in your diet?  Are you vegetarian? Are you taking any prescription medication?  Omeprazole?  Metformin?   Do you have anemia?  Thyroid problems? Are you taking any vitamins or herbal supplements?

There are eight essential B vitamins.  They are all water soluble.  Any excess of B vitamins is easily excreted by the kidneys.   Thiamine is Vitamin B 1.  Thiamine is safe and nontoxic even in high doses.  Benfotiamine and TTFD are forms of Thiamine that the body can utilize very easily.   The form of Thiamine in the supplements you mentioned is Thiamine Mononitrate, a form that the body does not absorb well and does not utilize well.  Only about thirty percent of the amount on the label is actually absorbed in the small intestine.  Less than that can actually be used by the body.  Manufacturers add thiamine mononitrate to their products because it's cheap and shelf-stable.  Thiamine and other B vitamins break down when exposed to light and heat and over time.  Thiamine Mononitrate is a form that does not break down over time sitting on a shelf waiting for someone to buy them.  What makes Thiamine Mononitrate shelf stable makes it difficult for the body to turn into a useable form.  In fact, it takes more thiamine to turn it into a useable form.   Gastrointestinal Beriberi is a localized shortage of Thiamine in the gastrointestinal tract.  High carbohydrate meals can result in gastrointestinal symptoms of Gastric Beriberi.  Fiber is a type of carbohydrate.  So, high fiber/carbohydrate snacks could trigger Gastric Beriberi.   Since blood tests for Thiamine and other B vitamins are so inaccurate, the World Health Organization recommends trying Thiamine and looking for health improvement because it's safe and nontoxic.
