Hormonal Changes?

I heard switching over to the gluten free diet can effect hormones in the body. I was just wondering if there is anyone else, particualry women, who has experienced this and how long does it take for the body to go back to "normal"???

I'm not sure if hormones are my issue, but I really don know what else it could be. I'v been gluten-free almost a year now and it seems all my PMS symptoms started up after going gluten-free. A lot of it has to do with cysts that alo popped up, but i never had bad PMS until I turned about 21, I'm turning 23 in march and am wondering if maybe this is just a change of getting older, or does it have to do with diet???

I just dont know what to do anymore because I am effected by this really bad for 3 weeks out of each month....sometimes I dont get a break at all!!!

I've posted about this before but I have literally been in tears lately b/c it is effecting my life so much. Especially my singing voice. Doctors just dont seem to understand how it can effect my singing, but it does. I was planning on laying vocals down for a song I'm recording, but now it is postponed b/c, well, my symptoms started up and my voice is just not there, its like I'm working twice as hard to try and produce the same sound, and it just feels like fatigue in my vocal chords, not to mention fatigue throuout my whole body. I even wrote a letter to "the doctors" TV show b/c I am so fed up. I've had hormone tests done, there was nothing there as far as I know, and am going back for a second ultrasound next week. I've just been wiped out.

and for the record I am gluten/soy/dairy/nighshade/red meat free. sodium well under 2000mg a day, no sugar, no artifical sweetners, no caffine, no alcohol and I eat tons of fruits and veggies, plenty of water. Nothing seems to help. Normally excericize makes me feel better, I'm a dedicated runner, but I've have taking off so many days lately b/c I just get so fatigued and feel light headed after working out sometimes. I know I'm not being glutened, if I was I'd be puking and going to the ER. I'm not a depressed person at all, but with all these symptoms I'm sure thats one thing a doc would think...I only get depressed when my body just decides to do whatever it wants!!!! I almost sometimes think the digestive problems while on gluten were better than dealing with this- thats how awefull I feel ........so upset right now :( I feel normal for 7 days a month...it seems I'm always trying to squeeze all my activities in in those 7 days, especially recoridng/music stuff, b/c once whatever this is hits, it just takes over...i can fight all I want, but it doesnt go away.

I'm sorry you're going through such a hard time! :(

It's possible that this is not related to celiac disease at all. I think you could benefit from making an appointment with a good gynecologist.

My periods were getting progressively worse through my 20s... very heavy, lasting from 7-10 days (normal is 6-8), irregular (normal is every four weeks, mine were as often as every three weeks), and very painful. Sometimes I would get cramps in the middle of the night, only I wouldn't wake up until they were really BAD and I was near the point of throwing up.

I'm not advocating this as a solution, but once I had my first baby the pain really decreased! My other problems were caused by gluten intolerance and not having enough thyroid hormones.

thanks. I defintily plan on making another gyno appointment after my ultrasound next week regardless of the results. I'm thinking that maybe my estrogen and progesterone levels are out of wack b/c it can cause the symptoms I'm having (I think ). hopefully they can have a blood test or something before I go... They never really told me my blood work results after the last appt. so I assume everything was normal....but then knowing some doctors, things can go left un-talked about.

I went onto a completely coeliac diet (I have not managed to get a diagnosis but it definitely helps) in April and have only had one accident with gluten since. I have now had 4 incidents of night sweats and aching legs. I didnt think much of it until the fourth one as there are lots of viruses around but now I am wondering if it is hormonal and as I am 40 I was concerned I might be entering peri menopause.

The other interesting thing is my older sister was diagnosed coeliac 2 years ago and she has been seeing her doctor with the same symptoms. We both have some degree of osteoporosis so early menopause will not be good news.

I am so sensitive I can not even take a pain killer let alone HRT.

I am going to see my doctor next time it happens (it could still be viruses).

Our mum didnt hit menopause until her very late 50's.

I'm sorry you are feeling so bad. I can feel for you because I had bad periods from the first one. No dr could ever find anything wrong with me. Going on birth control helped with the pain and duration some. I was always told childbirth would clear that up for me. Sorry, no. When I started cycling every 3 weeks & only had a few days a month with a "brain", I threw my hands up. What my gyno asked me to do was to go on continuous birth control if I didn't mind. Mind? I was willing to try anything. It did help and gave me my sanity back. Last year for monetary reasons, I had to back on traditional BC with a cycle each month. By then I was gluten-free, I hoped since so many other problems had disapeared with the diet, that would too. No such luck, in a few months, I was cycling back into the pain, no brain thing. My situation improved so I'm back on continuous Nuvaring again. Love it!! I'm still getting some craps and a little spotting but they are lessening each month, what a relief...

If your gyno can't find any reason for your cycles irregularities, you might discuss this option with her.

My other thought is, are you eating enough? Sounds like your diet is lean. Are you eating enough protein and omega oils? Also vitamin D is another one of those celiac's seem to be short of.

Hi all! Ive been away for a while navigating this new illness and also studying at university. But im back with so more updates and info, thank you all for your help and support.    Update: I suffered with an infection of my dermatitis herpetiformis a month or so ago. This resulted in a trip to a&e with an extremely swollen face, and a 2 week dose of doxycycline. Of course the infection went down but my dermatitis herpetiformis still remains to pop up every now and again. However, I’m coming up to almost a year being gluten free and I can honestly say the outbreaks are less often and more mild. But I’ve been eating extremely strict on a gluten-free diet (not much eating out and very cross contamination aware), so fingers crossed this continues.  As I am UK based, I have finally got through to dermatology and rheumatology in the NHS (no more private appointments which is great!) She was amazing and agreed on what sounds like dermatitis herpetiformis. However, she has also diagnosed me with chronic urticaria (hives) which will explain the swelling of my face, eyes, lips, and even sometimes tongue! So might be an allergy on the case, or perhaps another autoimmune condition due to the undiagnosed coeliac until this year. A skin biopsy has now been arrange for next month which is positive (there’s talks of me eating gluten for a day to activate the rash also, scary but they will have medication on site!)  Currently, I’m feeling more positive about my diagnosis and am so thankful to my hospital for the ongoing support I wasn’t able to get from my GP.  Things are looking up!

Hi there! This is something I’ve often wondered too! I’m still going through the process of getting an official dermatitis herpetiformis diagnosis, however I’ve been battling for 3 years and the dermatologists are pretty certain it’s dermatitis herpetiformis/celiac disease with it’s classic appearance and symptoms (it’s nasty stuff!) About 2 years ago before dermatitis herpetiformis was on the cards, I suffered with a terrible episode of seb dermatitis, it was absolutely everywhere and was probs left undiagnosed for months before I could get in with a dermatologist! I used ketaconazole and it seemed to do the trick. However, knowing what we do now, the dermatitis herpetiformis was definitely aggravating/causing this and I found that it was the use of too many steroid creams (they thought I had eczema) and heavy moisturisers bothering my dermatitis herpetiformis.  Since being gluten free for a year, I haven’t really suffered with an episode of the seb dermatitis for a while. Just trying to navigate the dermatitis herpetiformis outbreaks now.  But definitely feel there could be a correlation!

I have had very mild rosacea on my cheeks for years. I also am celiac abd have recently been diagnosed with rosacea in one eye. I have been prescribed eye drops during the day and a gel at night.

Although diagnosed with celiac and dermatitis herpetiformis, I was curious about the celiac genetics and had that testing done on my own. Unfortunately, the lab does not explain the results and any doctor I have asked said I would need to see someone specializing in genetics. I was hoping someone out there might help me understand. Here is what came back and although I understand the HLA DQ2 and HLA DQ8, I wasn't sure what the variants mean and why they repeat twice. Someone said it was a double marker meaning both of my parents gave me copies. I also read having this combination makes my celiac potentially much worse. HLA DQ2 - Positive | HLA DQ8 - Negative HLA Variants Detected: HLA DQA1*05 and again HLA DQA1*05 HLA DQB1*0201 and again HLA DQB1*0201

Understanding that normal is <15, I started off with 250+, then using the same lab it took two years to get to 11, the last test was 3. So, it jumped back up for some reason which is why I suspected gluten in my diet somewhere. I do not do dairy, eggs, oats, or soy. I am vegan and gluten free, and take numerous supplements with the help of this forum.
