Gluten-Free Dry Onion Soup Mix

Hello,

I found a tasty-looking recipe for pork tenderloin in the slow-cooker that I would like to try out, however it calls for dry onion soup mix. Does anyone know of a gluten-free dry onion soup mix? It is not listed on Campbell's Gluten-Free List (Canada) and I can't seem to find anything with online searches. Or does anyone know how I can make a home-made alternative (keeping in mind that I am not a whiz in the kithcen!)?

Thank you :)

Jillian

I found this: Open Original Shared Link that says the onion soup is gluten-free, but it was last updated January 2003.

However, my husband bought me a packet and it lists Yeast Extract in the ingredients. I always thought that was unsafe and this list: Open Original Shared Link says yeast extract contains gluten (as it contains Barley).

Thanks :)

Isn't Lipton dry onion soup gluten-free? It's past 4pm Eastern so I can't call. I also can't find the ingredients online.

Here's a recipe for dry onion soup mix I found on Recipezaar.

Open Original Shared Link

Homemade Dry Onion Soup mix

Ingredients

7 ounces beef bouillon powder

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

1 cup dried onion flakes

1/2 cup onion powder

1/4 cup dried parsley

1/8 cup onion salt

Directions

1Mix all together and store in container.

21/4 cup of this = 1 envelope.

Hum, I lost a post

Lipton is an Unilevel Company and their policy is to clearly list all forms of gluten. It is the only one of their dry soups and mixes that is gluten free.

It should be gluten free Jillian, as it lists no gluten. I use it all the time in my beef stew.

celiac-mommy Collaborator

I use it all the time.

Me too! Mmmmmmmm, onion dip :P

In this particular case, Lisa answered it in post #4. Unilever is totally reliable when it comes to listing gluten ingredients. If it doesn't say (barley) after Yeast Extract, it's not made from barley. Other companies may use the barley, you'd have to go on a product by product basis :)

You might want to contact Lipton (Unilevel) and request information regarding the source of the Yeast Extract. Yeast is not an ingredient that I am often concerned about. :)

Thanks for posting this Purple. Although Lipton onion mix is gluten free it does contain soy (which I can't have) and other unnecessary ingredients. I would rather make from scratch whenever possible. :)

I just bought a box of lipton onion soup mix and the ingredients list autolyzed yeast extract (barley). So mine would not be gluten free. Please remember to always check labels when you purchase any product as formulas change and may be different depending on where it is manufactured. Even though I live in the US my product was made in Canada, It was bought in a major supermarket chain (Stop & Shop) in Mass.

I also bought a box of that, too...either from Food Lion or Giant. I gave it to my DIL. I do have one box of the old left after which I'm going to make my own from the recipe on food.com.

I have a recipe for crockpot swiss steak that uses an envelope of Lipton's onion soup mix, but next time I'm going to substitute some dried onion and some beef boullion powder, and I'll bet it comes out pretty much the same. You could try that. I'm guessing a tablespoon or two of the onions, and maybe enough boullion powder for 2 cups' worth of liquid (or 2 boullion cubes dissolved in some liquid).

I just bought one today! It's by Simply Organic. 99cents at Fred Meyer/Krogers right now in the health food section!

Regarding autolyzed yeast extrace (barley) listing on the ingredients.....

Open Original Shared Link

Yeast extract

Main article: Yeast extract

Marmite and Vegemite have a distinctive dark colour

Marmite and Vegemite, products made from yeast extract

Yeast extract is the common name for various forms of processed yeast products that are used as food additives or flavours. They are often used in the same way that monosodium glutamate (MSG) is used, and like MSG, often contain free glutamic acid. The general method for making yeast extract for food products such as Vegemite and Marmite on a commercial scale is to add salt to a suspension of yeast making the solution hypertonic, which leads to the cells shrivelling up.compounds, a process of self-destruction. The dying yeast cells are then heated to complete their breakdown This triggers autolysis, where the yeast's digestive enzymes break their own proteins down into simpler , after which the husks (yeast with thick cell walls which would give poor texture) are separated. Yeast autolysates are used in Vegemite and Promite (Australia); Marmite, Bovril and Oxo (the United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland and South Africa); and Cenovis (Switzerland)

(the bold is mine)...thus, my non-scientific brain tells me that the offending (barley) proteins are no longer a danger to my body due to the fact that the autolysis yeast is rendered gluten free, through this process.

:D:blink:

It tried unsuccessfully to contact Unilevel and will try again, to verify it's current status. Or others could try:

Officially just in from Unilever via a wonderful company representative!

There has be NO formulation change regarding Lipton Onion Dry Soup Mix. Through Unilever policy of full disclosure, they have recently decided to include to source of the autolyzed yeast extract, as barley.

The trace barley in the finished product is 0.09 part per million in the Onion Soup, and 0.04 parts per million in the Vegetable Soup. Both are far below the standard (20ppm) of what is considered a safe level for a person with Celiac to consume.

Enjoy! :D

I use this recipe with Herbox Beef Bouillon granules..........and you can also find recipes for making your own Taco seasoning and chili seasoning mixes (omit the flour....it's not a big deal!)

Thank you Lisa. This made my day. :) I always keep an envelope or two on hand for convenience. It's nice to know nothing has changed except their label.

Last time I looked at Lipton onion soup it listed barley as an ingredient. I think the recipe has recently changed because the older ones in my pantry do not list barley.

Yes, I, too, have osteoporosis from years of malabsorption, too.  Thiamine and magnesium are what keep the calcium in place in the bones.  If one is low in magnesium, boron, selenium, zinc, copper, and other trace minerals, ones bone heath can suffer.  We need more than just calcium and Vitamin D for strong bones.  Riboflavin B 2, Folate B 9 and Pyridoxine B 6 also contribute to bone formation and strength.   Have you had your thyroid checked?  The thyroid is important to bone health as well.  The thyroid uses lots of thiamine, so a poorly functioning thyroid will affect bone heath.

That sounds so very likely in my case! I will absolutely ask my doctor on my next bone check coming up in March... Thanks a lot!

Calcium levels as measured in the blood can be quite deceiving as the body will rob calcium from the bones to meet demands for it by other bodily functions. Also, supplementing with calcium can be counterproductive as it tends to raise gut pH and decrease absorption. More often than not, the problem is poor absorption to begin with rather than deficiency of intake amounts in the diet. Calcium needs an acidic environment to be absorbed. This is why so many people on PPIs develop osteoporosis. The PPIs raise gut pH. And some people have high gut PH for other reasons. Low pH equates to a more acidic environment whereas high pH equates to a more basic (less acidic) environment.

Kind thanks for all this valuable information! Since my Folate was/is low and also my Calcium, there IS a chance I am low in B vitamins... My doctor only measured the first two, oh and Zinc as I has twisted her arm and guess what, that was mega low too. So who knows, until I get myself tested properly, what else I am deficient in... I did a hair mineral test recently and it said to avoid All sources of Calcium. But this is confusing for me as my Ca is so low and I have osteoporosis because of this. It is my Adjusted Ca that is on the higher side and shouldn't be. So am not sure why the mineral test showed high Ca (well, it was medium in the test but relative to my lowish Magnesium, also via hair sample, it was high I was told). But anyway, thanks again for the VitB download, I will look into this most certainly!

Hello good afternoon, I was wondering if anyone has ever brought their anti-allergy pills? I have been wanting to use their Cetirizine HCI 10mg. They are called HealthA2Z and distributed by Allegiant Health.I’m also Asthmatic and these allergies are terrible for me but I also want to be sure they don’t have any sort of gluten compound.    I have tried calling them but to no avail. Has anyone ever used them? If so, did you had any problems or no problems at all?    thank you
