Almost all regular ice creams are gluten-free unless they have obvious ingredients like cookies, brownies, cookie dough, Oreos, etc. For Ben and Jerry's, Breyers, Baskin Robbins and Popsicle all you have to do is read the ingredients. Turkey Hill, Edy's, and Dreyers have gluten-free lists that include most of their flavors.

Ben & Jerry

Breyers

Good Humor

Popsicle

These are some brands(above) that will not hide anything so if they have wheat, rye, barley, oats then they will clearly say that on the label

Edy's(check out their website for gluten free flavors)

TCBY & Baskin Robbins also have some gluten free ice cream.

oops now I see I was a few minutes behind Richards post with alot of the same info.

I'd have to recommend Edy's too. They rock :P

Anyone know if Klondike Bars are gluten-free? I saw a variety that has Hershey's Chocolate (which we know is gluten-free). Just curious if anyone has eaten these?

Thanks,

Klondike is another brand that will not hide anything so just check the label for wheat, rye, barley, oats and if there is none of that the enjoy! :D

Haagen-Dazs will mail you a gluten-free list, but basically just avoid Dulche de leche and all the obvious ones: brownies, cookie dough, strawberry shortcake, etc.

If you have a Cold Stone creamery near you they also have gluten free ice cream. Most of their flavors are gluten free as well as a lot of the mix ins, they use name brand mix ins like m&m's, reeses cups, etc... You can request that they use a clean paddle, and a clean section of counter. Also, the one near me lets me bring in Cerrone cones, or you can get your scoops in a cup. You can also get to go pints. Oh and they make the ice creams on location, so they should be able to tell you exactly what is in the flavors and which ones to avoid. Stay away from the hot fudge, it contains gluten

lovegrov Collaborator

Some hot fudges do indeed contain gluten (I think Dairy Queens might) but fudge ice creams in general seem OK.

Bottom line -- ice cream, as long as you avoid the obvious -- is really a pretty safe treat for us.

lovegrov Collaborator

Got a response!

Thank you for your inquiry about Kroger Brand Ice Cream.  We do have many Kroger Brand Ice Cream products that are considered gluten free.

All Kroger Brand and Private Selection Brand ice creams and frozen yogurt products are gluten free except those with cake, cookie pieces, or candy pieces added (such as the Cookies and Cream, Butter Zinger, Malty Millionaire, etc).  There is a slight possibility of cross contamination due to cake and cookie items prepared in same plant but allergen precautions are taken to try to prevent any cross-contamination between allergens.

Country Rich brand chocolate at Wal Mart is glutenfree. It has a rich, delicious chocolate flavor!

KayJay Enthusiast

We just bought some blue bunny ice cream bars. Choc. on the outside vanilla on the inside they are really good.

I wanted some fudgesicles but I couldn't find any that were gluten-free. All of the ones at our store contain wheat. Anyone know of some please let me know.

BTW a lot of Blue bell Ice cream has wheat in it especially their chocolate it says on the label but just make sure to check.

Even though its a little pricey, Haagen Daz Strawberry Ice Cream is the best!!!!

Since no one mentioned it yet, Friendly's makes good ice creams as well and they are cheaper than others out there. I prefer the (Black) Raspberry, it's awesome! :P

No friendly's here in TN, I know cause we used ot eat there all the time when I lived in NJ, but when I lived in NV and now in TN, there are none. They are not as wide spread as they should be.

Mayfield's fudge bars are gluten free

also Philly Swirl (an awesome company!) has a fudge swirl pop if you can find them. All of the stores around me only carry the Italian Ice and the popsicles, but I imagine their fudge swirls are just as good.

I have not seen any mention of Carvel ice cream, so I am adding it. The company makes ice cream cakes that can be made without the cruchies in the center. Carvel has become very small compared to what it used to be, but if there is one near you try it.

@xxnonamexx, There's labeling on those Trubar gluten free high fiber protein bars that say: "Manufactured in a facility that also processes peanuts, milk, soy, fish, WHEAT, sesame, and other tree nuts." You may want to avoid products made in shared facilities.   If you are trying to add more fiber to your diet to ease constipation, considering eating more leafy green vegetables and cruciferous vegetables.  Not only are these high in fiber, they also are good sources of magnesium.  Many newly diagnosed are low in magnesium and B vitamins and suffer with constipation.  Thiamine Vitamin B1 and magnesium work together.  Thiamine in the form Benfotiamine has been shown to improve intestinal health.  Thiamine and magnesium are important to gastrointestinal health and function.

Welcome to celiac.com @sha1091a! Your experience is a very common one. Celiac disease is one the most underdiagnosed and misdiagnosed medical conditions out there. The reasons are numerous. One key one is that its symptoms mimic so many other diseases. Another is ignorance on the part of the medical community with regard to the range of symptoms that celiac disease can produce. Clinicians often are only looking for classic GI symptoms and are unaware of the many other subsystems in the body that can be damaged before classic GI symptoms manifest, if ever they do. Many celiacs are of the "silent" variety and have few if any GI symptoms while all along, damage is being done to their bodies. In my case, the original symptoms were elevated liver enzymes which I endured for 13 years before I was diagnosed with celiac disease. By the grace of God my liver was not destroyed. It is common for the onset of the disease to happen 10 years before you ever get a diagnosis. Thankfully, that is slowly changing as there has developed more awareness on the part of both the medical community and the public in the past 20 years or so. Blessings!

@EndlessSummer, You said you had an allergy to trees.  People with Birch Allergy can react to green beans (in the legume family) and other vegetables, as well as some fruits.  Look into Oral Allergy Syndrome which can occur at a higher rate in Celiac Disease.   Switching to a low histamine diet for a while can give your body time to rid itself of the extra histamine the body makes with Celiac disease and histamine consumed in the diet.   Vitamin C and the eight B vitamins are needed to help the body clear histamine.   Have you been checked for nutritional deficiencies?

I found out the age of 68 that I am a celiac. When I was 16, I had my gallbladder removed when I was 24 I was put on a medication because I was told I had fibromyalgia.   going to Doctor’s over many years, not one of them thought to check me out for celiac disease. I am aware that it only started being tested by bloodwork I believe in the late 90s, but still I’m kind of confused why my gallbladder my joint pain flatulent that I complained of constantly was totally ignored. Is it not something that is taught to our medical system? It wasn’t a Doctor Who asked for the test to be done. I asked for it because of something I had read and my test came back positive. My number was quite high. Are there other people out here that had this kind of problems and they were ignored?

Welcome to celiac.com, @EndlessSummer! Do you react to all vegetables or just specific kinds or families of them? What you describe with green beans sounds like it has an anaphylaxis component. Like you, walnuts are a problem for me. They will often give me a scratchy throat so I try to avoid them. Does it matter if the vegies are raw or will-cooked in how you react to them?
