I've always thought that comic con sounds like a load of fun... or at least used to. Not sure it hasn't outgrown itself. I had pale blue wrapping today after my iron infusion and my husband cracked a joke about how I could just wrap myself in the stuff as a comic con costume with my backpack so I could be Rainbow Dash. Frankly I think its brilliant. :D

We ended up spending most of yesterday afternoon in the ER for the hubs. Not a fun day. He is getting to feeling better, but isn't exactly himself yet. Not sure he'll be eating food yet today, so I may just be cracking a can of chicken soup for dinner for him if he feels up to something semi-foodish. That leaves me on my own again, I'm thinking zucchini something and that meatloaf I didn't get to last night because I got all tied up with other matters. (Zucchini "something" usually ends up meaning breaded and fried, which may not be exactly healthy but is delicious beyond words.)

Sorry to break in but:

This is an important message from the Tiramisu Broadcast Network.  When a new and easy recipe for a Tiramisu style food is located, your thread will be interrupted.  This is not a test!.

OMG I SAW THAT RECIPE!!! If it wasn't 96 FREAKING DEGREES outside I would have been tempted to run straight to the store for a cake mix. I'm sure my husband will break in later with how I don't have about half of the ingredients blah blah blah, and it'll cost a small fortune for a few cupcakes. (Something about how for the price of the ingredients we could feed a starving child for like 5 years or save the planet or something... but he has to live under the same roof with me, not starving children.) I'm also pretty sure I won't be listening.

I made mac and cheese. Its been quite some time since i had it.

I adore water melon and strawberries again. So good.

Spring onion is probably a scallion.

Me: Beer.

Child: curry and rice.

There is technically a wee difference between a spring onion and scallion but they are used interchangeably, sorta like yams and sweet potatoes. In fact, most stores and markets label either way.

Going to northern England tonight. I am making Bangers (local plump divine Cumberland sausages) in the oven with a caramelized onion red wine sauce to go with the Mash (whipped potatoes). Minted peas (will use one of my mints). Eton Mess sounds like a perfect finish.

You'll need to head back down South for Eton :)

Rice, ground lamb, zucchini, mushroom, bell peppers, onion.

Just a few more days good weather before storms here, so will be making the most of it.

Very true. We will make the time...

That fried zucchini got pushed to tonight. My headache persisted enough that I simply wasn't up to more than taking care of a sick husband. There just wasn't anything energy or will left to worry about me. I know I ate something last night, but I don't remember what. I've got myself worn out all over again today. I thought my dad would drop my daughter off at her home, and head back to his. Instead he is in TX! Two states away and headed in my general direction. He hasn't said he is coming, but he may just meander on over to UT. So I'm sprucing up for a visit just in case. It has been a long time since I've seen him, and as unexpected as it would be I would be happy to see him.

Tonight is fried zucchini and a slice of ham. Ham and I can be friends as long as I don't try to be too friendly too often. I have a cantaloupe that is looking like it needs to be eaten sitting on the counter. A little of that with some vanilla ice cream will probably be dessert later.

Adalaide Mentor

I'm throwing a boneless turkey in the crockpot for dinner tonight. I'm hoping that my husband will feel up to eating finally. Its turkey so it should be easy enough on him that he can stand at least a little of it. I'm having some summer squash with onions and brown sugar for lunch and I'll probably just have leftovers of that for dinner. I'll probably see if he wants me to do some baked taters or something. More cantaloupes for dessert.

Its very quiet around here. I feel like I'm talking to myself... which is normal I guess. :D

Helloooo

You are not alone :)

I have a fantastic image in my head now of a boneless turkey trying to cross the yard...

6.30 here and no idea what is for dinner. I fear it will be after kids bedtime now. There is some steak in the fridge though.

i'm baaaaaaaack :)  sort of - trying to whoips together many piles of 'stuff' - i pack so carefully to leave the house, but when we return, we just chuck everything in the trunk and hope it makes it into the house lolz

addy - i am a 'toon-head - (not so much comic-con-ish, more like adult swim-ish)  if you ever watch 'squidbillies' i have visions of the one where dan halen genetically 'enhances' chickens for boneless wings.  it's disgustingly hilarious.....  i have a sick sense of humor....  ;)

these cartoon ones also secreted blue cheese dressing it was soooooo gross - like i said:  sick, right  (LOLOLLLLLLZ!!!!)

tonight, we are having some sort of seafood (i am leaning toward bang bang shrimp 'knockoff' w/rice noodles and yellow squash)  but if i don't get my butt in gear, we will be having:  nothing lolz

o, and thanks you guys:  people think i'm a hand-creeper now   <_<  :P

OMG Adult Swim is hilarious! Because my husband grew up a city slicker and I grew up a farmer's daughter, he makes constant hillbilly jokes about my upbringing when Squidbillies comes on. And a good time is had by all. Well... all two of us. :D Have you ever noticed how things are about 6 times as hilarious at 2 in the morning when you're sleep deprived? *giggle* Some of the cartoons on there though will leave you with a feeling of wth did I just watch? And you're like whelp... that's 15 minutes I'll never get back.

We've got a two sick and twisted senses of humor in this house too. It always makes for fun times. Sometimes I can feel the eyerolls of young people around me when I crack a "that's what she said" before them, but mostly I think they're just jelly cause I said it first. :P There is no such thing as too old for that one.

So... my loving husband who is so generous and wonderful and shares everything with me? Yeah, he shared his stupid virus with me. Halfway through the afternoon I'm suddenly sick, nearly vomiting and I'll leave out the rest. There are some things spouses don't need to share. <_< This is what I get for being all lovey dovey and taking care of him. I should have quarantined him and told him to keep a 10 foot perimeter.

I'm having trouble eating lately so the poor child is getting all sorts of random things and not following the menu plan.  Tonight it was the same as last night because I put some aside for my lunch and didn't eat it so didn't cook tonight and reheated that for her.

we are the opposite:  i was comfy hanging out in nyc and he was one'a them thar sussex county boys - half the time he thinks i jest ain't right.  the other half he is laughing hysterically with me at terrible humor.  (new business idea:  butcher/bar named BUTCHAHOLIC - where you can come in and pick up dinner.  you can have 2 beers at the bar, then you gotta 'take a break!  and buy a steak!'  or Get Out.  if you buy a steak, you can have 2 more beers.  then, 'take a break!  and buy a steak!'  etc....  potatoes are free, but you have to catch them.  if you miss one, you're out.  then when you get home, your wife counts your steaks and potatoes and decides if you're gonna get lucky or not LOLZ   "what?!!  3 steaks and only 2 potatoes????  you lousy s,o.b......  "  hahaha!

the moral of this story is:  if your husband is sick, send him to butchaholic - if he can't catch potatoes, you can't catch his virus   :P

my nephew works at a chocolate place in the mall (starts with a 'g', ends with 'odiva') and at the end of the evening, they can't sell the stuff they have leftover.  so, every night we got a giant bag o'goodness :)

edited to add:  having crackers and swiss cheese w/yummy fresh cherries and i hope howlnmad isn't paying attention (because he will tell me that is not dinner....)

Adalaide Mentor

Crackers and cheese and fruit and chocolate? Sounds like dinner to me!

I suppose tonight we're going to eat the rest of that boneless turkey thinger. I can make some gravy and smash some taters and maybe find something resembling a veggie somewhere. I still have a zucchini in the fridge.

I had to do some errands today and it was 97 when I got home at 5 which means it was probably hotter earlier. I just want to melt into bed and skip dinner but I know that would be bad for me. I got some meh news from the eye doctor to take with me to my doctor on Thursday. And I got a golden honeydew to cut up tomorrow. Plus some cucumbers to make into fridge pickles for my husband, and I may sneak a few because I have the self restraint of a toddler apparently.

Adalaide Mentor

Most day I pick just a few little yellow cherry tomatoes off my plants. Yesterday I picked a dozen or so! So tonight I had pizza. I had gotten a sample pack of crusts from Venice Bakery from their gluten free friend promo and used those up. I made one into cheese bread with garlic and fresh mozzarella. I roasted my tomatoes until the popped, mushed them up and put them on the other two with fresh garlic, fresh basil and fresh mozzarella. Then... I ate all three. They're 5 inch crusts! I'm not a super pig, just a regular one. pig-th.png

We had oven baked French fries and sweet tater fries with a couple of dippers, ketchup and ranch dressing.  Mangoes for dessert.

Last night I made "Get Rid of it Soup"... all the veggies in the refrigerator, chopped, braised, cooked with lentils, water. smoked chicken, some spices..  I never knew radishes would be so good in soup!

I'm happy because I froze six servings of it, so I'll have something to eat when I don't feel like cooking (or eating) food that I'm not sure is safe.

come dance with me Enthusiast

We had a stir-fry tonight, 2 containers put into the freezer for another night.

Celiac Mindwarp Community Regular

I am rubbish at cooking extra. I sometimes manage enough for lunch the next day, but nothing seems to make it to the freezer.

Salmon rice and veg later

Adalaide Mentor

We had a really early afternoon dinner of burgers. Hubs had fries (frozen) and I had brown sugar sauted pattypan and onions. Obviously one of us ate well and the other simply ate. We had also picked up a golden honeydew a few days ago and I don't really know how to tell if/when those things are ready so we just cut it up. O.....M.....G......that thing is positively delectable. Some melons are simply good, but is just honeydew on a whole new level.

We did all this after we got a few jars of refrigerator pickles done. After we ate I napped all evening, stupid headaches from the iron IV. <_< At least it beats being constantly sick. :D

Sad day in the Mindwarp household. My old cat died this morning, just went out of the back door and she was lying there peacefully like she was asleep. Kids are very sad, it is our first pet to die. We are making pictures and play doh models and printing some photos, and when we get her ashes will bury them under our little apple tree.

She was a lovely cat, rescued about 10 years ago and she brightened our lives daily. I will miss her sleeping on my head :)

Sorry about the kitty. :( There's another one for our dear Neroli (Mushroom) to take care of. She was a big kitty lover and I have this image of her taking care of all our kitties who have gone to romp elsewhere. And our Bella sometimes likes to sleep with her paws wrapped around the hub's head....or right up my butt. Not sure if I am flattered by that or not.

Addy

Sorry about the headaches :(

Very happy to hear you have some "oomph" as a result of the iron transfusions, though. My Dad had those (plus blood transfusions) regularly and we used to call it "getting a fill up of  liquid energy".

Returned from a 5 day, 440 mile solo trip and am none the worse for wear, having eaten out several times without incident. Knock wood.

Thank goodness for Find Me Gluten Free AND staying with family/friends who are also Gee Effers.

Soon, we will take over the world. Had an awesome lunch with Gemini and her hubs at Burton's after fighting traffic in I-495, which reminded me of why I am glad I do not live in the greater Boston area anymore.

Had a ginormous plateful of fried clams, scallops, onion rings and cole slaw at Woodman's in NH. Excellent G F batter done right since 1930-something (long before this became a "fad" for some folks) The original owner needed to be G F.

And nothing says "you're home" in New England like a bunch of fried stuff from the sea. Risked it all eating that much shellfish, but so far, so good. .

Tonight

Stuffed peppers, not the usual Friday is pizza night because we had it last night. I am all mixed up on what day it is after traveling....except HUMP DAY because I cannot get that adorable camel out of my head. I love him.

(OK, if you just read that sentence alone---it makes absolutely no sense to you if you are unaware of the commercial)

Gonna get crazy around here. Someone put an offer on the house and we accepted it and the inspections, etc. come next. Fingers crossed.

Have a great Friday and fantabulous weekend, everyone!

love2travel Mentor

Internet was down for several days so I was absent in flesh but not in mind. Lightning struck a tree a few feet from the house, slaying our modem.

We are simply having the David Chang (Momofuku) recipe for spicy and gingery noodles with roasted miso-black sesame carrots. Mayhap we will throw some nectarines on the grill and toss together a sublime lime lavender glaze.

I have osteopenia and have cracked three vertebrae.  Niacin is connected to osteoporosis! Do talk to your nutritionist and doctor about supplementing with B vitamins.  Blood tests don't reveal the amount of vitamins stored inside cells.  The blood is a transportation system and can reflect vitamins absorbed from food eaten in the previous twenty-four to forty-eight hours.  Those "normal limits" are based on minimum amounts required to prevent disease, not levels for optimal health.   Keep us posted on your progress.   B Vitamins: Functions and Uses in Medicine https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC9662251/ Association of dietary niacin intake with osteoporosis in the postmenopausal women in the US: NHANES 2007–2018 https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11835798/ Clinical trial: B vitamins improve health in patients with coeliac disease living on a gluten-free diet https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/19154566/   Nutritional Imbalances in Adult Celiac Patients Following a Gluten-Free Diet https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8398893/ Nutritional Consequences of Celiac Disease and Gluten-Free Diet https://www.mdpi.com/2036-7422/15/4/61 Simplifying the B Complex: How Vitamins B6 and B9 Modulate One Carbon Metabolism in Cancer and Beyond https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC9609401/

Thank you so much for the clarification! Yes to these questions: Have you consulted dietician?  Have you been checked for nutritional deficiencies?  Osteoporosis? Thyroid? Anemia?  Do you take any supplements, or vitamins? I’m within healthy range for nutritional tests, thyroid and am not anemic. I do have osteopenia. I don’t take any medications, and the dietician was actually a nutritionist (not sure if that is the same thing) recommended by my physician at the time to better understand gluten free eating.    I almost wish the gluten exposure had triggered something, so at least I’d know what’s going on. So confusing!    Many thanks!

@JudyLou,  I have dermatitis herpetiformis, too!  And...big drum roll... Niacin improves dermatitis herpetiformis!   Niacin is very important to skin health and intestinal health.   You're correct.  dermatitis herpetiformis usually occurs on extensor muscles, but dermatitis herpetiformis is also pressure sensitive, so blisters can form where clothing puts pressure on the skin. Elastic waist bands, bulky seams on clothing, watch bands, hats.  Rolled up sleeves or my purse hanging on my arm would make me break out on the insides of my elbows.  I have had a blister on my finger where my pen rested as I write.  Foods high in Iodine can cause an outbreak and exacerbate dermatitis herpetiformis. You've been on the gluten free diet for a long time.  Our gluten free diet can be low in vitamins and minerals, especially if processed gluten free foods are consumed.  Those aren't fortified with vitamins like gluten containing products are.  Have you consulted dietician?  Have you been checked for nutritional deficiencies?  Osteoporosis? Thyroid? Anemia?  Do you take any supplements, medicine, or vitamins? Niacin deficiency is connected to anemia.  Anemia can cause false negatives on tTg IgA tests.  A person can be on that borderline where symptoms wax and wane for years, surviving, but not thriving.  We have a higher metabolic need for more nutrients when we're sick or emotionally stressed which can deplete the small amount of vitamins we can store in our bodies and symptoms reappear.   Exposure to gluten (and casein in those sensitive to it) can cause an increased immune response and inflammation for months afterwards. The immune cells that make tTg IgA antibodies which are triggered today are going to live for about two years. During that time, inflammation is heightened.  Those immune cells only replicate when triggered.  If those immune cells don't get triggered again for about two years, they die without leaving any descendents programmed to trigger on gluten and casein.  The immune system forgets gluten and casein need to be attacked.  The Celiac genes turn off.  This is remission.    Some people in remission report being able to consume gluten again without consequence.   However, another triggering event can turn the Celiac genes on again.   Celiac genes are turned on by a triggering event (physical or emotional stress).  There's some evidence that thiamine insufficiency contributes to the turning on of autoimmune genes.  There is an increased biological need for thiamine when we are physically or emotionally stressed.  Thiamine cannot be stored for more than twenty-one days and may be depleted in as little as three during physical and emotional stresses. Mitochondria without sufficient thiamine become damaged and don't function properly.  This gets relayed to the genes and autoimmune disease genes turn on.  Thiamine and other B vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients are needed to replace the dysfunctional mitochondria and repair the damage to the body.   I recommend getting checked for vitamin and mineral deficiencies.  More than just Vitamin D and B12.  A gluten challenge would definitely be a stressor capable of precipitating further vitamin deficiencies and health consequences.   Best wishes!

And I agree with Wheatwacked. When a physician tells you that you can't have celiac disease because you're not losing weight, you can be certain that doctor is operating on a dated understanding of celiac disease. I assume you are in the UK by the way you spelled "coeliac". So, I'm not sure what your options are when it comes to healthcare, but I might suggest you look for another physician who is more up to date in this area and is willing to work with you to get an accurate diagnosis. If, in fact, you do not have celiac disease but you know that gluten causes you problems, you might have NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity). There is no test available yet for NCGS. Celiac must first be ruled out. Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder that damages the lining of the small bowel. NCGS we is not autoimmune and we know less about it's true nature. But we do know it is considerably more common than celiac disease.
