Sweet Potato W Maple Syrup

rain

I'm experimenting with cutting back on fructose. I've taken out fruit and cut way back on juice and honey (in my morning tea). I just ate a whole sweet potato with 2 tbs of maple syrup and I've got the tell tale buzzing/tingling/chills in my body.

Is this fructose intolerance?

Thanks!

I am not sure what mannose is but mannitol is a sugar alcohol. I don't think it is present naturally but is used as a sugar replacement.

Mannitol can cause D and upset stomach when eaten in excess or by folks sensitive to sugar alcohols.

ok, just googled. Sweet Potatoes have Mannose which is a really good sugar- also known as D-Mannose- good for binding up gluten AND bacteria that cause UTIs.

so, i honestly dont know if i was confusing it with mannitol. ?? but ya, 50% of the time im fine with them, and 50% of the time- its too much ... starch? fructose? im not sure.

Yea sweet potatos are really good for you. Lots of vitamins and they also have both soluable and insoluable fiber and are used a for centurys in Oriental medicine for regulating the digestive system.

are you sure you are consistently getting sweet potatoes, or is it possible you may be mixing in some yams?

Sweet potatoes are technically only about 15% fructose, sucrose is half fructose but most of the sugar in it is starch (all glucose).

Is there something in yams that is bothersome to stomachs? But not sweet potatoes? To be honest I don't think I even knew there was a difference between the two lol. Shows how much I know!!

don't know, and I didn't know the were different till i looked into the "blood type diet", sweet potatoes are good, yams no....they ARE two different families of plants.

It kind of depends on where you are. In the united states, yams and sweet potatoes are the same. One is red fleshed, one is pale, but they are the same plant type. In Europe and most of the rest of the world, though, yams are what we call African yams here in the States. So when we say yams, they'd say sweet potato, LOL.

But with the buzzing and tingling - honestly, that sounds much more like allergy or gluten issue than fructose, anyway. The fructose tends to be gut related, from everything I've heard. Do you have any other allergies? I know that some farms now wax their sweet potatoes, and I don't know what contaminants the waxes have, but if you have other allergies, it might be worth checking out.

I've never heard this. Do you have a reference?

So after looking at those links I am assuming ( here in Canada ) that what we market and sell as "yams" are really sweet potatoes. A sweet potato is ORANGE looking and a true yam is BEIGE more like a potato? Or do I have it backwards? I really need clarification because I love the orange ones lol. (I call yams). But have noticed that sometimes I have issues with them. It is hit or miss.

I have been reading a book about digestive disorders and one of the foods to avoid is sweet potatoes :( due to high fructose. The book is very interesting and informative called Why Doesn't My Doctor Know This? It covers IBS, Crohns and Colitis as well as Celiac. Fructose malabsorbtion is also seen in IBD, Crohns and Colitis.

I think they're all from the sweet potato famiily:

Wheatwacked, are you speaking of the use of potassium bromide and and azodicarbonamide as dough modifiers being controlling factor for what? Do you refer to celiac reactions to gluten or thyroid disease, kidney disease, GI cancers?
    • Scott Adams
Excess iodine supplements can cause significant health issues, primarily disrupting thyroid function. My daughter has issues with even small amounts of dietary iodine. While iodine is essential for thyroid hormone production, consistently consuming amounts far above the tolerable upper limit (1,100 mcg/day for adults) from high-dose supplements can trigger both hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism, worsen autoimmune thyroid diseases like Hashimoto's, and lead to goiter. Other side effects include gastrointestinal distress. The risk is highest for individuals with pre-existing thyroid conditions, and while dietary iodine rarely reaches toxic levels, unsupervised high-dose supplementation is dangerous and should only be undertaken with medical guidance to avoid serious complications. It's best to check with your doctor before supplementing iodine.

In Europe they have banned several dough modifiers potassium bromide and and azodicarbonamide.  Both linked to cancers.  Studies have linked potassium bromide to kidney, thyroid, and gastrointestinal cancers.  A ban on it in goes into effect in California in 2027. I suspect this, more than a specific strain of wheat to be controlling factor.  Sourdough natural fermentation conditions the dough without chemicals. Iodine was used in the US as a dough modifier until the 1970s. Since then iodine intake in the US dropped 50%.  Iodine is essential for thyroid hormones.  Thyroid hormone use for hypothyroidism has doubled in the United States from 1997 to 2016.   Clinical Thyroidology® for the Public In the UK, incidently, prescriptions for the thyroid hormone levothyroxine have increased by more than 12 million in a decade.  The Royal Pharmaceutical Society's official journal Standard thyroid tests will not show insufficient iodine intake.  Iodine 24 Hour Urine Test measures iodine excretion over a full day to evaluate iodine status and thyroid health. 75 year old male.  I tried adding seaweed into my diet and did get improvement in healing, muscle tone, skin; but in was not enough and I could not sustain it in my diet at the level intake I needed.  So I supplement 600 mcg Liquid Iodine (RDA 150 to 1000 mcg) per day.  It has turbocharged my recovery from 63 years of undiagnosed celiac disease.  Improvement in healing a non-healing sebaceous cyst. brain fog, vision, hair, skin, nails. same! how amazing you have a friend who has celiac disease. i find myself wishing i had someone to talk about it with other than my partner (who has been so supportive regardless)

They don’t give a sample size (serving size is different from sample size) so it is hard to tell just what the result means.  However, the way the result is presented  does look like it is below the limit of what their test can measure, so that is good.
