I have been having a heck of a time lately. I was glutened last Thurs. I had all of the symptoms that I always get. I have been getting a new symptom though. You know how with celiac, you have mucus or oily drops floating. (TMI) I know. Do you ever just have the oily/mucus discharge after a bout of D from being glutened? It's freaking me out a little b/c it's always been in the stool but now sometimes I feel like I have to go and thats all that comes out the oily stuff.

Thanks so much!

Yes, I use to have that before going gluten free. It was really bad after having a pasta dinner...go figure!

Yes...I've had lot's of times I was only able to pass mucous and oil water...before I found out what was wrong.

I have a question though. Did this happen just from trace gluten? That happened to me as I was eating gluten every day. I'm just curious if you don't mind sharing. How did you get glutened this time?

It will stop when the gluten is out of your system.

Well..I unknowingly ate a product that was cross contaminated every sat. For about 2 months. I had recently stupidly went waaaay overboard on dairy products and blames it on that. My dairy and glutened symptoms are very similar. I removed the dairy and still had d etc. Ate the product again and bam..figured it out. It went in the trash. I am super sensitive and react badly.

Thanks for your help. I am going to try not eating anything processed. I keep getting glutened over and over from stuff marked marked gluten free. This disease sure is tricky sometimes.

Sorry but what do you mean oily drops floating? Sorry this is all new to me. Discharge? Does it just come out?

With celiac, one of the hallmark symptoms is oily stools or oily diarrhea. I looks like oil drops floating in the toilet. It comes out after going to the bathroom or sometimes it will feel like you have to go and just pass gas with the mucus/oily stuff.

I've been gluten free for almost 2 years and I am still learning. It's hard to deal with sometimes especially with cross contamination and delayed reactions.

Sounds like my pattern. I do ok for a while and then start missing all the foods I have to do without. I feel the best when I avoid all processed gluten free foods. I am having to rededicate myself today. I had been avoiding corn but couldn't pass up some kettle corn marked gluten free. I kinda went crazy after what I thought would just be a few bites. Boy, did I pay for it. The cravings can be incredible and hard to resist. I had also been experimenting with candy bars and some yogurt. Not really sure which set me off. Maybe someday I'll learn to say goodby to those things forever.

As unsettling as it is, yes it happens. It happened to me all the time before I went gluten free and now it happens when I accidentally get glutened. I think it usually comes towar then end when I'm just about done with the stomach problems. I feelfor you! You are fine though, dont let it freak you out. Just let it resolve you to e more vigilant about cross contamination.

I have this however its not as bad as it was when I was consuming Gluten dairy super bad also All my slimy mucus out the but is almost stopped completely. I am still noticing a oily layer at the top of the water I also have some floating stool some not mostly when I consume food with a high fat content like hamburger cream cheese use to do this to me also but I haven't eaten that in a long time. I posted about this in another thread I had started but deleted it, it fits better here.

I get mucus after getting glutened. It can confirm that the aches and pains I feel without much GI problems are actually from getting CC.

Asharia Rookie

Oh wow, I never noticed the cause and effect before - this might help me a lot in figuring out what the sources of CC in my diet are! Gee, I get to start a mucus diary, awesome.

I hope you are on the mend soon. About 1 in 5 people who contracted chicken pox as a child go on to develop shingles in later life - it is not uncommon. There are 5 known members of the herpes virus family including chicken pox that commonly infect humans, and they all cause lifelong infections. The exact cause of viral reactivation as in the case of shingles or cold sores is not well understood, but stress, sunburn and radiotherapy treatment are known triggers. Some of the herpes viruses are implicated in triggering autoimmune diseases: Epstein-Barr virus is suspected of triggering multiple sclerosis and lupus, and there is a case where it is suspected of triggering coeliac disease. As to whether coeliac disease can increase the likelihood of viral reactivation, there have been several cohort studies including a large one in Sweden suggesting that coeliac disease is associated with a moderate increase in the likelihood of developing shingles in people over the age of 50. US 2024 - Increased Risk of Herpes Zoster Infection in Patients with Celiac Disease 50 Years Old and Older Sweden 2018 - Increased risk of herpes zoster in patients with coeliac disease - nationwide cohort study

BFree bread is fortified with vitamins and minerals as is ASDA own-brand gluten-free bread. All the M&S bread seems to be fortified also.

You might try Heallix.  It's a silver solution with fulvic acid. I just put the solution on with a cotton ball.  It seemed to stop the nerve pain. Again,  not in your eyes or ears.   Go to heallix.com to read more about it and decide for yourself Also,  I do think nerve and celiac combined have a lot to do with your susceptibility to shingles breaking out.

Celiac disease requires both genetic potential and a triggering stress event to activate the genes. Otherwise it remains dormant and only a potential problem. So having the genetic potential is not deterministic for celiac disease. Many more people have the genes than actually develop the disease. But if you don't have the genes, the symptoms are likely being caused by something else.

Yes, i pulled raw ancetry data and saw i have 2/3 markers for DQ2.2 but have heard from friends in genetics that this raw data can be wildly innacurate
