Got Any Funnys From Friends/family Trying To Understand?

I've eaten there quite a bit (one location repeatedly) and they are the most knowledgable restaurant re:gluten-free I've been to. The only gluten is wheat tortillas....and so far I've had good luck.

Tell them you are gluten-free. They change gloves and get clean utensils to scoop the food. I always get a burrito bowl....

They will heat corn tortillas for you in the press, but put them in foil.

I've never seen them touch spoon (serving utensil) to the food (wheat tortilla) but am sure it happens. It's NOTHING like Subway.....there they touch bread, dip back in, repeat. Makes my skin crawl. Chipotle is "one scoop", drop.

Hmm, I'll have to give them a whirl. I used to get the worst indigestion there before going gluten-free. Wonder if it was actually the flour tortillas rather than the spices. lol Thank you.

oh, you're never alone when you come on here, hunny!! ;) ((((cyber-hug))) to you. Poor babe, I hope your hives resolve quickly. damn that airborne wheat!!! :P it makes me ditzy myself....

((((cyber hug)))) right back atcha! Thank you. I bought a breatheasy mask, it came in the mail the day before yesterday and I forgot to take it to the grocery store. I would have loved to have tested it to see if it works. Airborne makes you ditzy??? My husband calls this the 50% factor...meaning I only have half a brain when exposed to wheat

bigbird16 Apprentice

IrishHeart, good to "see" you, too! Trish_Trish, I hope your hives go away and that you feel better soon! These funny stories have been making my week.

lynnelise Apprentice

Thanks. Sounds as if two of you have had good luck with Chipotle. There is one about 45 minutes from me. Maybe I'll give them a try. I'll tell them exactly what you guys said. Until now, I have only eaten out at the gluten-free bakery/cafe near me--owned by a celiac--and that's all they serve--gluten-free all the way! It's heaven!! :)

That does sound heavenly! :) Happy Birthday!

Well, it DID when I was still UnDxed...maybe I am less sensitive now. Not sure. All I know is, the bakery and the baked goods aisle in the market made me feel ditzy....er, I should say ditzier  ....I was pretty ditzy the 3 years prior to DX. I had/have MANY neuro symptoms. Not fun. So, I asked my doc if it was possible to feel this way from airborn flour. He said "Sure...gluten gets into any mucosal area: nose, eyes, mouth".....that made sense to me.

I heard a very funny thing on here (wish I knew who said it so I could thank her) and I use it all the time.

"Gluten is my kryptonite and Supergirl can't fly when kryptonite is around."

Hope you feel better soon!! :)

Thanks so much! This safe haven of mine is called Sherry Lynn's and it is in upstate NY in Latham. It's the only totally gluten-free bakery and cafe. (I posted earlier with that story) Yesterday, I had a carrot cake cupcake with buttercream frosting and it was the BOMB!

Ha ha ha ...I love this saying!!!!! That is a good one!!!

If I can block the kryptonite poison from my nose and mouth, I do better. These breatheasy masks are "suppose" to work better than the little blue surgically masks from the hosp. I bought one in light pink and it looks like I'm wearing a pretty pink diaper on my face  But I don't care, it beat the heck out of hives! Just call me "diaper face supergirl" :P

By the way, I have a cute story. Yesterday, while I was reacting, I had a man with diabetes tell me he could inject me with my epi-pen because he knows needles. He has to stick himself all day. Bless his sweet heart. Him and the manager unloaded my cart while I stood outside. He said he went unconcious with a sugar level of 5 just 2 days prior. He was in public and people around him called 911 fast and saved him. He was happy to help me, because others helped him. What an angel...

How does changing the gloves protect you from the bits of wheat tortilla that are already in the cheese, lettuce, etc? I have heard this before but the flour or bits of bread or whatever are already in the toppings. New gloves, spoons, etc won't change that.

Edited: Sorry Lynnelise, that wasn't meant to sound snotty to you. Just a frustration I have with food places.

I should have added - I don't have the lettuce or the cheese. Only stuff that they are serving with the spoons.

I react to pretty tiny amounts of cc and I've only gotten glutened once that I attribute to Chipotle, and that was pretty minor so I think it must've been a minuscule amount of cc.

I find tortillas very unlikely to crumb, they are quite elastic. I eat at a similar chain here in Australian and have never been glutened. In the 18 months I've been gluten free, I've eaten at Chipotle approx 30 times (and that's within a 4 week period, a weekend and another 2 day period, so pretty much constantly when I can and it can easily be the only 'proper' meal I eat when I'm in the US) and at the similar chain (Guzman & Gomez) more spaced out but about 100 times in 18 months. So obviously, everyone's needs vary but I consider them really reliable (and super delicious!)

To bring it (somewhat) back on topic - my friends always tell me when they went to 'that mexican place'. It's like they feel guilty anytime they go without me.

Trish Trish, what a nice guy. I'm glad he was there for you. I hope you're doing well today.

How about this one. I'm in a hotel restaurant and ask if there is any gluten-free food. The waiter goes to the kitchen and comes back to tell us "you can't have anything with bread or pasta." I was with family and three of us are gluten-free. We all just stared at him in shock and ordered plain salads.

oh man! There's nothing like getting 'told' by people who have no idea. This reminded me of the cafe I tried the other day. They had burgers and I wanted to know if they could do the filling bit safely (I was worried what was in the patty and what else they'd cooked on the grill. Australia is pretty good for gluten knowledge so I figured I didn't have to do gluten 101 with them. And the grill was right behind him). The guy just looked at me and squinted and was all 'well for starters, you couldn't have the bun... ' no kidding! He went on to describe the ingredients in the patty but I'd lost all faith by then. My friend was outside waiting for me to find out if I could eat there and I just went back outside and said, 'um, no' and we kept walking. Bless her, that was the second place we'd tried too.

My dp had a "duh" moment this morning. At breakfast, he presented the sandwich menu from the new grocery store that just opened near us. I didn't even glance at it.

Me: "Are you trying to torture me, or what?" Him: "Well you could order your sandwich without bread!"

Good thing I'm in my 50's, This would have been grounds for a break up in my 20's or 30's. :P

Had a similar situation when my friend said to me last Spring, "Well, couldn't you just have the sandwich, but without the bread?" and I said "yeah, but what would I call it? and would I mayo my hand??" She said "OMG, I'm such a dope!" We had a good laugh over it. And P.S. now, she's gluten-free too after she realized(with a little help) that her health issues could be related to gluten--and she feels great. Another convert!! :)

Anyone who suggests to me that we should eat Mexican, I bop over the head  They think I'm racist  But I do the same for all ethnic cuisines, so I guess I am a consistent racist  But by the time they take out all the things I can't eat there's absolutely nothing left to eat that has any flavour whatsoever that they can manage to do in their cuisine(s)

Wise & gracious! Wise & gracious! Wise and gracious! ( just repeating it to try to remember that!)

I do sometimes eat sandwiches without bread. I'll take some cheese slices or cut into long pieces. Then wrap a piece or two of cold cuts around them. Maybe add a couple of leaves of spinach or a long slice of red pepper in the middle, too. Can dip in mustard or mayo if wanted. Took that to a high school robotics competition and I had to eat it away from the kids. They wanted it.

I do this too!! Bread-less sandwiches. Cheese, meat, spinach leaves, a long, thin cuke slice, red pepper .... I just do not know what to call them  ....some call them lettuce wraps, I know. The Earl of Sandwich wanted the bread "press" so he could have all his food "together" and carry it ....So, would we name our creations after ourselves???...as in "I had a delicious Karen for lunch".... sounds "catchy".... :D

Without bread, you need more than one to fill up. Mine aren't lettuce wraps because the piece of ham is the " wrapper". Maybe we call them Celiac Sandwiches? Celiac Wrappers? Low carb Delites?

If Nicki Minaj (sp?) gets Celiac, that would make her a " Celiac Rapper".

Celiac wrapper it is then!!

Time for me to go get busy.....made my first gluten-free apple pie yesterday and it was delicious (if I say so myself) Notice I said was? Hubs and Mom and I "sampled"...twice....

Happy T-day, Karen! ;)

My mom tries so hard to understand and help me cope with celiac! My family is really supportive (except for my younger brother, but he's thirteen, so it's expected. He complains about all things gluten free!) My uncle actually made me gluten free pancakes when I was visiting him and his family a couple weeks ago, so sweet. My friends never understand, and people at work/school definitely don't understand! I had a man up at my school tell me that I needed to be more 'responsible', that did not make me happy! I had missed a day because I had been throwing up all night (along with other icky things that come along with being glutened)! I asked him if he wanted to go anywhere when he's gotten food poisoning, because that's the only thing I can compare it to! My professor tried to understand when I told him, he said "Isn't that in everything?" and I said "Even in my toothpaste!" It amazes how many things gluten is in! I'm constantly reading labels, and I usually end up getting glutened anyways! Sometimes I just don't even eat

The best thing just happened!

A Dad from Boy Scouts that my hub & son know well just came over. His 13 year old daughter has Celiac. She made me a pecan pie! She even makes her own crust! I don't even know them! Wanted to make sure I didn't get short changed on Thanksgiving!

Pecan is my favorite but no one in my house likes it!

Maybe she can post some recipes on the Baking section.

A friend recently invited my kids to a cookie making party. I politely declined, reminding her that they can't touch flour. She responded by saying "Oh I totally forgot! Could they just come and watch?" Ummm...yeah. Let's stand around and watch other kids make yummy things my kids can't eat while their friends get covered in gluten. Then they'll all play together (you know, because kids are so great at washing their hands). I have to laugh because I just adore her and I know she meant well.

Thanks for responding. I researched further and Lindt Lindor chocolate balls do contain barely malt powder which contains gluten. I was surprised at all of the conflicting information I found when I checked online.

@BlessedinBoston, it is possible that in Canada the product in question is formulated differently than in the USA or at least processed in in a facility that precludes cross contamination. I assume from your user name that you are in the USA. And it is also possible that the product meets the FDA requirement of not more than 20ppm of gluten but you are a super sensitive celiac for whom that standard is insufficient.
    • BlessedinBoston
No,Lindt is not gluten free no matter what they say on their website. I found out the hard way when I was newly diagnosed in 2000. At that time the Lindt truffles were just becoming popular and were only sold in small specialty shops at the mall. You couldn't buy them in any stores like today and I was obsessed with them 😁. Took me a while to get around to checking them and was heartbroken when I saw they were absolutely not gluten free 😔. Felt the same when I realized Twizzlers weren't either. Took me a while to get my diet on order after being diagnosed. I was diagnosed with small bowel non Hodgkins lymphoma at the same time. So it was a very stressful time to say the least. Hope this helps 😁.

@Jmartes71, I understand your frustration and anger.  I've been in a similar situation where no doctor took me seriously, accused me of making things up, and eventually sent me home to suffer alone.   My doctors did not recognize nutritional deficiencies.  Doctors are trained in medical learning institutions that are funded by pharmaceutical companies.  They are taught which medications cover up which symptoms.  Doctors are required to take twenty  hours of nutritional education in seven years of medical training.  (They can earn nine hours in Nutrition by taking a three day weekend seminar.)  They are taught nutritional deficiencies are passe' and don't happen in our well fed Western society any more.  In Celiac Disease, the autoimmune response and inflammation affects the absorption of ALL the essential vitamins and minerals.  Correcting nutritional deficiencies caused by malabsorption is essential!  I begged my doctor to check my Vitamin D level, which he did only after making sure my insurance would cover it.  When my Vitamin D came back extremely low, my doctor was very surprised, but refused to test for further nutritional deficiencies because he "couldn't make money prescribing vitamins.". I believe it was beyond his knowledge, so he blamed me for making stuff up, and stormed out of the exam room.  I had studied Nutrition before earning a degree in Microbiology.  I switched because I was curious what vitamins from our food were doing in our bodies.  Vitamins are substances that our bodies cannot manufacture, so we must ingest them every day.  Without them, our bodies cannot manufacture life sustaining enzymes and we sicken and die.   At home alone, I could feel myself dying.  It's an unnerving feeling, to say the least, and, so, with nothing left to lose, I relied in my education in nutrition.  My symptoms of Thiamine deficiency were the worst, so I began taking high dose Thiamine.  I had health improvement within an hour.  It was magical.  I continued taking high dose thiamine with a B Complex, magnesium. and other essential nutrients.  The health improvements continued for months.  High doses of thiamine are required to correct a thiamine deficiency because thiamine affects every cell and mitochondria in our bodies.    A twenty percent increase in dietary thiamine causes an eighty percent increase in brain function.  The cerebellum of the brain is most affected.  The cerebellum controls things we don't have to consciously have to think about, like digestion, balance, breathing, blood pressure, heart rate, hormone regulation, and many more.  Thiamine is absorbed from the digestive tract and sent to the most important organs like the brain and the heart.  This leaves the digestive tract depleted of Thiamine and symptoms of Gastrointestinal Beriberi, a thiamine deficiency localized in the digestive system, begin to appear.  Symptoms of Gastrointestinal Beriberi include anxiety, depression, chronic fatigue, headaches, Gerd, acid reflux, gas, slow stomach emptying, gastroparesis, bloating, diarrhea and/or constipation, incontinence, abdominal pain, IBS,  SIBO, POTS, high blood pressure, heart rate changes like tachycardia, difficulty swallowing, Barrett's Esophagus, peripheral neuropathy, and more. Doctors are only taught about thiamine deficiency in alcoholism and look for the classic triad of symptoms (changes in gait, mental function, and nystagmus) but fail to realize that gastrointestinal symptoms can precede these symptoms by months.  All three classic triad of symptoms only appear in fifteen percent of patients, with most patients being diagnosed with thiamine deficiency post mortem.  I had all three but swore I didn't drink, so I was dismissed as "crazy" and sent home to die basically.   Yes, I understand how frustrating no answers from doctors can be.  I took OTC Thiamine Hydrochloride, and later thiamine in the forms TTFD (tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide) and Benfotiamine to correct my thiamine deficiency.  I also took magnesium, needed by thiamine to make those life sustaining enzymes.  Thiamine interacts with each of the other B vitamins, so the other B vitamins must be supplemented as well.  Thiamine is safe and nontoxic even in high doses.   A doctor can administer high dose thiamine by IV along with the other B vitamins.  Again, Thiamine is safe and nontoxic even in high doses.  Thiamine should be given if only to rule Gastrointestinal Beriberi out as a cause of your symptoms.  If no improvement, no harm is done. Share the following link with your doctors.  Section Three is especially informative.  They need to be expand their knowledge about Thiamine and nutrition in Celiac Disease.  Ask for an Erythrocyte Transketolace Activity test for thiamine deficiency.  This test is more reliable than a blood test. Thiamine, gastrointestinal beriberi and acetylcholine signaling.  https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC12014454/ Best wishes!

I have been diagnosed with celiac in 1994, in remission not eating wheat and other foods not to consume  my household eats wheat.I have diagnosed sibo, hernia ibs, high blood pressure, menopause, chronic fatigue just to name a few oh yes and Barrett's esophagus which i forgot, I currently have bumps in back of my throat, one Dr stated we all have bumps in the back of our throat.Im in pain.Standford specialist really dismissed me and now im really in limbo and trying to get properly cared for.I found a new gi and new pcp but its still a mess and medical is making it look like im a disability chaser when Im actively not well I look and feel horrible and its adding anxiety and depression more so.Im angery my condition is affecting me and its being down played
