Sick Again

I was out of school not last week but the week before for 3 days (for colonoscopy and egd) and 2 weeks before that I missed 3 days. Now I have a cold thats being going around my family. I got it on last sunday and I was hoping it would be mostly over by this sunday. Its not. Its much worse. I've been glutened 2 times this weekend as well. I am not feeling well. I am not sure whether I should force myself to go to school tomorrow and continue forcing it all week. I feel like my teachers think I am a slacker even though I have told them about the celiacs. Among other things going to school will spread the cold (my parents could care less about that). I've had a really hard month and am completely overwelmed from the school work I have already missed. I think I need to transfer out of chemistry because I can't teach it to myself :( . I'm very stressed and my stomach is hurting, I am stuffy and my head is very congested. I'm not sleeping well. I feel like giving up on my grades at this point. I think I am going to lose attendence credit if I miss much more without a doctors note. What would you do at this point?

I'd make some chicken soup (homemade), take a hot soak in the tub, and try to relax.

I'd think about if I could do school if I didn't have to take chemestry. Maybe drop chem if that's an otion and look at it later, when you're feeling better.

I'd probably go to school, only because when I'm not feeling well and don't go to work I tend to focus too much on what's wrong with me and frump out too much. That can, I imagine, lead to a downward cycle.

Make a deal with yourself to get up, get dressed, go to your first class. Then push yourself to go to your next class.

See if you can get through the day. Even if you have to go home early, it will be better than not showing up at all.

Good luck!

You probably should start with a doctors note?!

Do you know how you got glutened? Are you eating well, plenty of fresh food otherwise? Drinking plenty of water?

Are any of your family/household members gluten free also?

My stomach is getting so much worse. Got glutened at panda express. I was stupid. It was on saturday but I could have gotten glutend today too from applebees. I am never eating out again. My stomach hasn't hurt this bad in weeks. Ugh. I can't get a doctors note until I get the egd results back.

As the mom of 2 boys, 15 & 18, I'm going to be blunt with you. I hope you show this to your parents, too.

If you were my kid, you would now be grounded, indefinitely. You have shown that you cannot be responsible to eat a gluten-free diet. Or you are not able to eat gluten-free due to a lack of knowledge. It is important as it is impacting your school work as well as your health. I know you want to be with your friends and not stand out but going to eat places where you cannot get a gluten-free meal and then eating is irresponsible and childish.

Don't try to tell me " but, Mom! Appleby's has a gluten-free menu!". You didn't read it as it plainly states that the ingredients might be gluten-free but they will cook it with gluten foods. It specifically mentions the fries as being cooked with all the gluten stuff.

Stay home. Catch up on your school work. You can invite friends over for gluten-free snacks and a video next weekend.

You poor thing! It's so hard having regular colds and stuff when you're already dealing with celiac.

You need that doctor's note first of all. If you need rest then you need it. Only you know when and how far to push yourself.

Don't give up on your grades. Ask your teachers for help. Tell them what's going on and ask if you can have more time on some assignments if you need it. Hang in there! The cold will pass and you'll feel better soon.

Does Panda have gluten free options? I wouln't trust that place. The food flies everywhere and the gluten is all over the pans.

What do you eat at home?

I didn't purposley eat gluten. My family is really into eating out on the weekends. My father took me to panda express as a gift, it was a surpise. I ordered rice and beef brocoli. I am new to this and after eating it I found out it wasn't gluten free. As for Applebees my mom was being nice. I am just going to eat at home from now on. Its not their fault or mine. Accidents happen when you have only been gluten free for a few weeks. At home I drink plenty of water since it is all I can drink. I eat everything gluten free at home. Lots of Apples and Bananas.

Sounds like I need to ground your parents, too. Not much of a gift or treat if they are feeding you poison. Are they not understanding? You should make sure the doctor talks to them.

Booghead,

I also made a load of mistakes in the first couple of months. Don't blame yourself or your parents - in the end what is most important is that you have their support.

It is really important that you and your parents get reading/educating yourselves and fast!

I have to be super super strict with my food, at work, out anywhere else and at home. To be honest with you it sucks. And its hard. But in the end if you want to do well at school, learn how you can socialise with your mates gluten free etc and do it pain/illness free you've just got to do it. Just like Nike says.

I eat at one restaurant only and only rarely. I use to work there so I know the staff and they know my issue. I eat steak (cooked on a hot stone at the table) and salad.

They have a dedicated frier for fries but the fries are a bit hit and miss wrt gluten. I really really love my home made potato fries now. I am slowly learning lots of good tricks and things to replace what I can't have.

Do you cook at all? Help mum in the kitchen?

Testing can't alone be trusted.  Else why would it take so many years of testing and retesting and misdiagnosis to finally be told, yes you have Celiac Disease. As to what to eat, I like pre 1950 style food.  Before the advent of TV dinners.  Fresh food is better for you, and cooking from scratch is cheaper.  Watch Rachel Ray's 30 Minute Meals for how to cook.  Keep in mind that she is not gluten free, but her techniques are awesome.  Just use something else instead of wheat, barley, rye. Dr Fuhrman is a ex cardiologist.  His book Eat to Live and Dr Davis' book Wheatbelly were instrumental in my survival.

If you have DH you will likely also want to avoid iodine, which is common in seafoods and dairy products, as it can exacerbate symptoms in some people. This article may also be helpful as it offers various ways to relieve the itch--thanks for the tip about Dupixent, and I've added it to the article:

I just want to clarify that what I posted is a category of research summaries we've done over the years, and nearly each one shows that there is definitely a connection to celiac disease and migraine headaches. The latest study said: "the study did indicate some potential causal associations between celiac disease and migraine with or without aura, as well as between migraine without aura and ulcerative colitis...this study did not find evidence of a shared genetic basis..." Anyway, there is definitely a connection, and you can go through more of the articles here if you're interested: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/celiac-disease-amp-related-diseases-and-disorders/migraine-headaches-and-celiac-disease/

Two months ago, I started taking Dupixent for dermatitis herpetiformis and it has completely cleared it up. I can't believe it! I have had a terrible painful, intensely itchy rash for over a year despite going fully gluten-free. See if your doctor will prescribe Dupixent. It can be expensive but I am getting it free. When the dermatitis herpetiformis was bad I could not do anything. I just lay in bed covered in ice packs to ease the pain/itching and using way too Clobetasol. Dapsone is also very good for dermatitis herpetiformis (and it is generic). It helped me and the results were immediate but it gave me severe anemia so the Dupixent is better for me. Not sure if it works for everyone. I cannot help with the cause of your stress but from experience I am sure the severe stress is making the celiac and dermatitis herpetiformis worse. Very difficult for you with having children to care for and you being so sick. Would this man be willing to see a family therapist with you? He may be angry at you or imagine that your illness is a psychosomatic excuse not to take care of him. A therapist might help even if he won't go with you. Also do you have any family that you could move in with (with the kids) for a short time to get away? A break may be good for you both.

@tiffanygosci, Thiamine deficiency is a thing in pregnancy for "normal" people, so it's exponentially more important for those with celiac disease and malabsorption issues. I studied nutrition before earning a degree in Microbiology because I was curious what the vitamins were doing inside the body.  See my blog.  Click on my name to go to my page, scroll to drop down menu "activities" and select blog.   So glad you're motivated to see the dietician!  We're always happy to help with questions.  Keep us posted on your progress!
