ARCHIVED Product Update
plantime replied to eeyor-fan's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The problem I see is that barley malt is used as a natural flavoring. It is not one of the top 8, so it can be hidden in the list. I have eaten Banquet's sliced beef meal without noticeable symptoms. That does not mean that I recommend it to other people. I have found it to be too salty and not filling enough for my tastes. What I do for convenience... -
I have never had success baking with rice flour. I have decided that it is because of the properties of rice. I know it is less expensive than other glutenfree flours, but sometimes we have to spend more to get the qualities we want. This is why we save receipts, so the excess cost can be deducted from taxes.

ARCHIVED My First Gluten Free Torture
plantime replied to sandsurfgirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I tell my family and friends not to worry about what I will eat, just tell me where we are going and when. Then I take care of/make arrangements for myself. I feel better knowing that I have control, and they have one less thing to worry about. Sometimes it means carrying my food with me, sometimes not. You will go through the mourning period, and it... -
ARCHIVED How Careful Do I Have To Be?
plantime replied to Kategrad7's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Tiffany posted the same thing I go by. I am afraid of hidden gluten, so stainless steel is the way I go for pans and utensils. It only takes a tiny bit of gluten to make me sick, though, so I can feel when I get contaminated. Try buying your pans one at time, or go to Wal-Mart for an inexpensive set. You don't need a lot of dishes, just one of each. -
ARCHIVED For Those That Had A Biopsy.
plantime replied to Jeffiner's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
When I got my diagnosis, the doctor was looking for ulcers. He found red inflamed patches, so he took biopsies from them. The only report I got was the referring doctor reading me the lab's conclusions, that the villi were blunted, indicating celiac disease. By that point, however, I had been telling doctors that I have celiac disease, and I had been following... -
ARCHIVED If You Have Surgery
plantime replied to plantime's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I agree. Even a tiny slip causes me extreme pain and emotional disturbance. My sister is non-insulin dependent diabetic, and she always cheats on her diet. It makes her sick, but she doesn't care. I use her behavior as an example of why the doc I had chose the methods he did. -
ARCHIVED If You Have Surgery
plantime replied to plantime's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
That's what I thought was interesting. I always thought that, once healed and always glutenfree, I would be just like everyone else. According to him and my PCP, the simple fact of having celiac marks me as having a compromised intestinal tract. They both said that they do not trust a celiac intestine to ever absorb anything properly, since the possibility... -
ARCHIVED If You Have Surgery
plantime posted a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I just had spinal fusion done, and had an interesting conversation with the anesthesiologist. He said that celiacs do not absorb medications properly. He told me that it makes a tremendous difference in how he preps a person for surgery, since swallowed medicines, even glutenfree, would not work at a properly measurable level. He switched me from swallowed... -
ARCHIVED Starting Weight Watchers!
plantime replied to wakorb89's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hello. I have been on weightwatchers online for a long time. I just want all of you to know that the weightwatchers message boards, which are free, have many celiac and glutenfree people. I frequent the GDT board, and there is a dietary issues board that usually has a thread for glutenfree posts. I get a lot of point-friendly recipes that are glutenfree... -
ARCHIVED Is Gatorade Safe For Celiacs?
plantime replied to Ringo454447's topic in Sports and Fitness
I get sick when I drink most flavors of Gatorade. The problem I have is that wood resins are used in Gatorade, and I am allergic to most wood. It is glutenfree, so it might be something else in it that you are having a problem with. -
ARCHIVED So Confused!
plantime replied to Laurelf's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Since you were off gluten for a while, I think the bloodtest results would be skewed. The biopsy might show it, since you still have indications that were visible. I hope you get answers soon! -

I never knew dishwasher cleaners existed. I will have to find some! I always take mine apart and scrub it by hand each month. Thanks Patti!

ARCHIVED Sharp, Stabbing Upper Abdominal Pain With Gluten Exposure?
plantime replied to Caitlin9267's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
My pain is on the left side, just under the ribcage. I don't see why it couldn't be in the center, under the sternum. As I understand it, people feel the pain in different parts of their abdomen. And yes, it is pain triggered by gluten. If you have only been glutenfree for a few months, you might feel the pain for up to another year as your body heals... -
Treen Bean, I agree that a major part of my problem is when I am watching others eating it. I work in a convenience store, and I see everyone buying cupcakes and cookies that I would love to eat. The cancer issue and such are not enough to make me stay glutenfree. I don't get diarrhea, just pain for a day or two. Since I am already in pain with my arthritis...

ARCHIVED Pain In Lower Left Rib Area
plantime replied to Pain in Amanda's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I was diagnosed in 2004. I don't get pain for months from a crumb anymore, but it does last for two days. I have found that doing the arms-over-head-lean-to-the-right stretches help relieve the pain. I don't know why or how it helps me, but it does. For the longest time, I thought it was being caused by an ulcer or dairy. I had quit eating all dairy... -
ARCHIVED Pain In Lower Left Rib Area
plantime replied to Pain in Amanda's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
The pain you are describing is what I get when I have been glutened. Nothing stops it except time. Even after the worst of the pain is gone, the area is still very sensitive to pressure. Make extra sure that you are not getting gluten anywhere. It takes 6 to 8 weeks for my pain to stop when it happens. -

ARCHIVED My Unthinking Husband
plantime replied to dilettantesteph's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Then you would be surprised at what the mind can do to a body. Surely if you inhaled a crumb of bread, you would have noticed. It is large in comparison to the nasal passages, and you would have felt it. I think perhaps you might have gotten glutened from a different source. For the record, I am the only one in my family that is celiac. I deal with... -
ARCHIVED Bleach Denatures The Gluten On Kitchenware?
plantime replied to Gaye of PA's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
It's nice to see you, too, Patti. I am finished with college, I have my Bachelor's in Accounting, so now I have time to check in on the board again. I also have two handsome grandsons, pictured in my avatar. I hope the last couple of years have been good for you. -
ARCHIVED Bleach Denatures The Gluten On Kitchenware?
plantime replied to Gaye of PA's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Ditto, Patti. The only reason I rinse my dishes before loading them into the dishwasher is so I don't have to clean the dishwasher as often. Grease-filled drain traps are nasty! -
ARCHIVED My Unthinking Husband
plantime replied to dilettantesteph's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I don't understand how you got glutened by a dish you did not eat off of. To cause a celiac reaction, the gluten has to be ingested, not looked at or smelled. Could you be having a psycho-somatic reaction? You really should relax and chill out a bit, overreacting will only get you labeled a nut-case. -
Rob, If your wife can have dairy, try getting some whey protein to put in yogurt for her. I use it with milk, yogurt, and frozen fruit to make shakes. Ice cream can be used in place of yogurt. I wish you both the best!
