If you want fried here is a pretty classic recipe: Open Original Shared Link You can use an all flour mixture too in this recipe. Some people in the south use all cornmeal - just depends on your preference. Rice flour is sometimes a litle gritty so it kind of has a bit of a cornmeal texture. I usually add an egg to the buttermilk because the gluten...

ARCHIVED Safe Brands Of Rice Besides Lundberg?
MaryJones2 replied to julandjo's topic in Super Sensitive People
I was super sensitive and still am pretty sensitive and have never had any problems with the rice at costco - I eat the basmatti in the burlap bag and also the jasmine rice. My costco sells Lundberg rice in 10 lb bags for $10 so you might ask the manager if they can order it. -
ARCHIVED Is There Gluten-free, MSG Free Beef &/or Chicken Bullion?
MaryJones2 replied to squirmingitch's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have not seen a bouillon that doesn't contain some form of MSG (yeast extract). I would think the Kosher and Middle Eastern versions would be your best bet. -
ARCHIVED Quick & Easy Breakfast Ideas For Kids
MaryJones2 replied to nchalona's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Amy's makes great gluten-free breakfast burritos and I don't think they have eggs - there is a tofu scramble one but I think the other two are rice, beans and cheese. They are under $3 here so will likely be less in other parts of the country. If that is in your price point you might ask Albertson's or one of your local stores that carries Amy's products... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Rotisserie Chicken
MaryJones2 replied to MaryJones2's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Lisa, are they frozen and you cook at home? I'm open to that too. Just couldn't quite tell if that's what you mean or if your store uses Perdue brand. I was hoping someone had information on Safeway. Safeway and Costco are really the only two chains we have in our area. I think there is a Lucky but it's not really in the way of any place I am coming... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Rotisserie Chicken
MaryJones2 posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I see a lot of topics about gluten-free rotisserie chicken (the kind that is cooked in the deli and sold in paper bags) but I can't find a list anywhere. I know Costco is gluten-free and that Whole Foods does not contain gluten ingredients but carries a warning. Anyone know about Safeway and other store brands? It would be nice to have options. -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free In Santa Cruz
MaryJones2 replied to grodeylocks's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
With the exception of the Ideal, Zelda's and Hula's yes they all have gluten-free menus (most are online). For Asian try Jia Tella (Cambodian). There are tons of sushi places around but I can't think of any with gluten-free soy sauce. I usually don't ask because I bring my own and eat sashimi. I haven't tried it but I've heard this place is good although... -
ARCHIVED Bulk Bread Mix That Works Well In A Zojirushi
MaryJones2 replied to MaryJones2's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I didn't realize she had a cookbook for the Zojirushi - I'll check it out. I am rather busy these days and don't have access to a lot of gluten-free flours (I'm pretty remote and it's a trip to get them) so I am looking for something quasi pre-made - I didn't think about something with betterbatter. I have used it for several years and really like it. -
ARCHIVED Problems With Tinkyada Pasta?
MaryJones2 replied to Joe0123's topic in Super Sensitive People
I too have never had a problem with Tinkyada. Trader Joe's brand is rumored to be Tinkyada but I've never done well with it...Ancient Harvest is the other brand we use with no issue. -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free In Santa Cruz
MaryJones2 replied to grodeylocks's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I live in the area and here are the tops on my list. I've been to many places that are accomodating and can't really say I've had many issues around here. Sushi is everywhere around here too... Ideal Bar in Santa Cruz and Zelda's in Capitola (don't think they have a gluten free menu but certainly have lots of options and generally know what is and isn... -

ARCHIVED Bulk Bread Mix That Works Well In A Zojirushi
MaryJones2 posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
So Udi's bread in my new area costs almost $7 a loaf (compared to $3.50 before) and I'm thinking about pulling out my Zojirushi because we eat 3-4 loafs a week and it is really adding up. Does anyone have suggestions for bulk mixes (or economical recipes) that work well in a Zojirushi bread machine? I've notice my Zojirushi behaves differently than my old... -
ARCHIVED Vegetarian, Gluten-Free And Dairy-Free - Can It Be Done?
MaryJones2 replied to carriej82's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I was a strict vegetarian for 14 years. I was gluten, dairy and soy free for 3 during that time. After 3 years or so I was able to tolerate a little dairy and am now ok with it. I generally avoid soy because it still bothers me but I can tolerate in small amounts. I choose to add meat back in because like you said I felt like I was starving... It... -

ARCHIVED Delta Air Lines To Offer Gluten Free Special Meals
MaryJones2 replied to WHinNOVA's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
So yes Peter is correct - this topic is very old. Delta does offer gluten-free meals although some are tastier and more reliable than others - it depends on the originating airport more than anything with Delta. If you have a problem with a gluten-free meal - non existent or other errors like you are severed wheat crackers on a meal clearly marked ... -
ARCHIVED Newbie To Gluten-Free Diet & Wanting Breadmachine Advice
MaryJones2 replied to hunsakermountain's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I can't remember the name but there is a bread machine discussed here frequently that gets great reviews and I think is about half the price (Breadman or Cuisinart?). I think it even has a gluten-free cycle. I have a Zojirushi and can't say I'm terribly impressed given the significant price difference. It's great but if you are on a budget I think you... -

ARCHIVED I'm Done With Amy's
MaryJones2 replied to Piccolo's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
If you still have the box call them and let them know. They will test the batch and let you know the results... -
That's a really risky place to eat. Next time don't feel bad about sending something back when it shows up with bread on the plate - that's too much contamination and likely a good part of what made you sick. Also, call the restaurant and let the manager know what happened. If they have a gluten-free menu they should know when they didn't do something...

ARCHIVED Food For Flight/airports?
MaryJones2 replied to granolagal's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
GoPicnic is a good option - a few airports sell them at the news stores. Most airports have fruit/vegetable and cheese boxes at the food stands. I have seen various sizes/containers of peanut butter taken 3 times in the past year so it may not be 100% safe option anymore - I would think single serve tubs that you can put in your ziplock will pass though... -
ARCHIVED Burger King Fries Now gluten-free
MaryJones2 replied to freeatlast's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Their gluten sensitive menu still contains the disclaimer that they can be fried in shared fryers so I would be very careful until BK puts out a press release and/or updates their menu (currently dated last March)... Open Original Shared Link The blog post on Triumph actually says "gluten-free status unclear" not that they are gluten free and Burger...
